SPONSORS WELCOME TO BEER & B ITES

Tonight we come together to make a difference for cancer patients in the South Puget Sound through South Sound Cancer Awareness Research Expansion (CARE). Thank you for making Beer & Bites a priority. Because of our generous sponsors, led by Founding Underwriting Sponsor The Rush Companies, every dollar spent here tonight will make a direct impact on curing cancer.

Since CARE’s inception in 2008, more than 120 cancer patients have received hope for a longer life. Leading edge cancer treatment has been made available to them in the South Puget Sound, thanks to the trials coordinated through CARE. And, they are not alone. Cancer patients are guided through the trials by CARE’s researchers who walk alongside them during some of life’s most frightening moments.

We appreciate your presence here. Whether taking a chance at the Wine Toss, purchasing a ticket for the door raffle, bidding on a fantastic dessert, or making a straight tax-deductible donation through the fund-a-need, know that each purchase is helping in our combined effort to raise over $400,000 for cancer research tonight. Enjoy the fabulous food and locally-crafted beer while competing against your neighbor for one of the many fantastic auction items offered during the Live auction. We are glad you are here.

Sincerely,

Gordon Rush Dr. Frank SenecalFounder FounderThe Rush Companies Cancer Awareness Research Expansion (CARE)

Cancer has touched the lives of almost every person in America today. It is the second most common cause of death in the U.S.

In Pierce County alone, the annual incident rates include:

• Over 600 new cases of breast cancer • Over 300 cases of colorectal cancer • Over 500 cases of lung cancer • Over 500 cases of prostate cancer

South Sound CARE Foundation enables about 40 Pierce County residents per year to enroll in clinical trials.

We are a foundation that relies on partnerships with regional medical institutions; the work of doctors, researchers, nurses, and volunteers; and, most of all, the involvement of our community. We founded the South Sound CARE Foundation in order to bring leading treatments and clinical trials to Tacoma and the surrounding region and to continue pushing down the path to a cure.South Sound CARE Foundation is the only organization that supports underfunded cancer research throughout the South Sound region. With your support, someone in need may receive access to clinical trials and innovative therapies right here in our community. You can help a cancer patient stay close to their loved ones while they face the greatest battle of their lives…please help win that fight.

SOUTH SOUND CARE FOUNDATIONFUND-A-NEED

South Sound CARE (Cancer Awareness Research Expansion) was established in 2008 by a group of community leaders who came together with a vision: to bring groundbreaking clinical trials and cancer research to the South Sound Region, and to provide residents with cancer treatment options otherwise unavailable.South Sound CARE’s board includes cancer survivors and medical professionals from MultiCare, Franciscan and Northwest Medical Specialties. Led by Dr. Frank Senecal, CARE’s group of medical professionals, board members, and volunteers work together to make sure that patients in the South Sound Region have access to leading medical research, and to improve the cure rate for cancer. Above all else, we know that eliminating the hardship of travel allows patients to remain with their loved ones during treatment while they battle for their lives. And that, in and of itself, is a victory.

How Our Trials WorkIt’s no secret—the regulatory process to get medications and treatments approved by the FDA is a slow and expensive one. At the South Sound CARE Foundation, we tend to patients of the Tacoma region with cutting-edge techniques and treatments that are in the process of being approved but have the potential to be more effective than previously approved standard therapy. These treatments have already been through a long and arduous process; they start in a lab, are often tested on animals, and finally, they make it to a point where trials on humans are deemed safe and necessary for further study. Due to this red tape, researchers may find out that a treatment is effective years before it’s approved.

Currently, CARE has partnered with CHI Franciscan Health, MultiCare, Mary Bridge Children’sHospital, Northwest Medical Specialties, and the University of Washington’s Center for CancerInnovation (CCI) to help treat patients in the Puget Sound Region. This type of cancer care can beexpensive, and without the help of CARE, our collaborators, and individuals like you, we could not bring the best in cancer treatments to our patients here in the Puget Sound Region. We want to thank our partners in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry that often facilitate access to new, effective treatments for our patients.

Clinical trials put groundbreaking science to work on the human body. These trials don’t guarantee success stories, they aren’t necessarily miracle cures—however, they do offer a glimmer of hope when other treatments fail or as supplements to traditional therapy. These trials have the potential to help not only the patient undergoing treatment, but all future cancer patients, as we continue to grow our understanding of cancer from these types of trials.

When I first met Dr. Sibel Blau she explained about all the different kinds of breast cancers and their treatments, ending with the worst one. Triple negative breast cancer. It sends cancer cells into the blood and travels about your body to find new places to grow. There is no cure. I have stage four triple negative breast cancer.

Chemotherapy works well for a while, but sooner or later it will quit working or the side effects get so bad that it has to be discontinued. When this happened Dr. Blau tried to get me into an experimental drug study in Seattle. It was full so I couldn’t get in. Thanks to South Sound CARE, the funding for the genetic study of my blood, and the administration of those experimental drugs are being given to me at Dr. Blau’s office, in Puyallup, where we live. That is so important to us. Happily the drugs are doing so well that I’ve been pronounced “stable.” That doesn’t mean remission and I still have cancer, but it means that the tumors that I have are the same size or smaller and there are no new ones.

Because I’m in Dr. Tony Blau’s study, concerning cancer cells in the blood, I get to work with Stephanie Parker. She is a research coordinator and is employed by South Sound CARE . She has lots of patients that she follows, but makes me feel that I’m the only one. She goes to all my appointments with me, gets blood samples to Dr. Tony when he needs them, she makes sure my meds are up to date, and that I get all the tests that are required. When I don’t want to go get yet another test she nags me until I do. She takes the time to visit with me before I see the Doctor. When we do see the doctor, she gently reminds me of the things that I needed to ask about but have already forgotten. She submits all the data so we can learn more about this cancer and the treatment so others will benefit from it.

Most women who get triple negative breast cancer are much younger, women with young families. I am 73 years old. Our children are grown, our grandchildren are grown. I wanted to live long enough to meet our two expected great grandchildren. I met them both this summer. I got to hold them and kiss them and make them smile. When you have cancer, it’s the little things that bring you the most joy.

Head l i n eYour support tonight will dramatically change the lives of cancer patients in Pierce County. Thank you for coming, for donating, for having fun, and for being part of the Beer & Bites family.

We hope you enjoyed yourself and look forward to seeing you at next year’s Beer & Bites. To stay tuned to happenings, visit www.RushtoBeerandBites.com.
