2 25th Annual Scientific Meeting of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry
Greetings to all attending the 2019 ISCD Annual Scientific Meeting in beautiful Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!
This is ISCD’s first Asia-Pacific meeting and the diversity and vitality of the whole region is represented in the topics and speakers awaiting you at our meeting.
The Scientific Program kicks off with our Keynote Lecturer: Professor Li Gang who will review the role of immuno-modulation in osteoporosis management. The rest of the scientific program includes ISCD’s flagship Basic and Advanced educational courses, and nearly three days of learning on diverse topics in bone health, from HIV to Pediatrics and
from technical aspects of densitometry to artificial intelligence, all presented by US, European and Asia-Pacific experts in the field, in large plenary lectures and small, intimate Meet-The-Expert sessions.
We are also pleased to offer six Open Sessions in ISCD’s Position Development Conference, where public attendees can learn about potential new ISCD Position Statements and participate real-time in the process of formulating ISCD Positions.
Our meeting will also include the formal launch of the Asia-Pacific Fragility Fracture Network, whose mission to prevent fractures worldwide complements ISCD’s mission of advancing the assessment of musculoskeletal health to help patients around the world. ISCD is a global organization and our commitment to the Asia-Pacific region is strengthened by bringing you an outstanding Annual Scientific Meeting with our partners the Malaysian Osteoporosis Society. We are grateful for their teamwork and collegiality.

Welcome Message From Scientific Chairman
Selamat Datang,
On behalf of the Scientific Committee, it is my great honor to warmly welcome you to the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) Annual Scientific Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The burden of osteoporosis and related fragility fractures is expected to be a major problem in the world, particularly in Asia-Pacific countries. In view of the ageing population and the changes in the demographic and socio-economic status of countries in the Asia-Pacific region, more than half of the osteoporosis related hip fractures are
predicted to occur in this region by the year 2050.
The well-developed state-of-the-art scientific program aims to provide you the latest information on osteoporosis management, both globally and regionally, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. Highlights on advances in various aspects of clinical densitometry and current best practise, allowing both clinicians and technologists to perform better in acquiring, interpreting and applying clinically the densitometry measurements in managing their patients, will also be presented during this meeting.
As this is the first ISCD Annual Scientific Meeting being held in an Asia-Pacific country, there were a mix of cultures in the planning of the scientific programs, bringing both scientific sessions and speakers from global and Asia Pacific countries. Through the scientific program, this will be the best platform and opportunity for all of us from different parts of the world to exchange opinions and to find opportunities to collaborate and to share our expertise and experience.
I would like to express my most sincere thanks to the faculty members, speakers as well as those who submit and present their abstracts and research work to make this meeting a great success. I would like to thank the members of the Scientific Committee for all their effort in putting up an excellent scientific program.
Enjoy your time in Kuala Lumpur, meeting all our old friends as well as meeting new ones!
Terima kasih.

Welcome Message From President, Malaysian Osteoporosis Society (MOS)
Welcome to Kuala Lumpur!
On behalf of the Malaysian Osteoporosis Society (MOS), I have the honor and pleasure of welcoming you to the 25th Annual Scientific Meeting of the ISCD 2019. We are indeed honored that ISCD has given us the opportunity to co-host this important meeting.
As this is the 1st meeting held in the Asia-Pacific region, the Scientific Committee, under the leadership of Dato’ Dr JK Lee, has put together a program that includes the latest advances and “hot topics”, along with topics that are more pertinent to this region.
MOS has representatives assisting in the various aspects of this ISCD meeting – in the Scientific Committee and the Position Development Conference.
At this ISCD, a Position Development Conference (PDC) has been integrated into the meeting. Many key experts in their field will be convening at our conference. As such, as mentioned by Professor Dr Robert Blank, the President of the ISCD, we are uniquely poised to gain state of the art knowledge.
The location Kuala Lumpur was selected to make the ISCD meeting more accessible to Doctors, Physicians and Technologists from the Asia-Pacific region and in particular from Malaysia.
It is my fervent hope that all delegates will take advantage of this opportunity to engage with the key opinion leaders at this meeting.
In addition to hearing the latest updates, do take this opportunity to network with the “Movers and Shakers” in the field of musculoskeletal health and bone densitometry, meet old friends, colleagues and make new acquaintances.
Signing off with thanks to everyone who has helped make this ISCD Annual Scientific Meeting a success, but most of all to all delegates, for making time to attend.
Chan Siew PhengPresident Malaysian Osteoporosis Society 2018-2020

Assalaamualaikum and Selamat Datang.
It gives me great pleasure to welcome all delegates and participants of the ISCD 2019 Annual Scientific Meeting.
I would also like to thank the organizing committee for having this ISCD Annual Scientific Meeting in Malaysia, a collaboration between Malaysian Osteoporosis Society (MOS) and Malaysian Society of Radiographers (MSR). This collaboration is a positive symbiotic development for both societies.
We take pride in the fact and belief that our clinicians and technologists are well-schooled, well-trained, adaptable while facing challenges and rise to the challenge to excel in the field of densitometry imaging. Thus, we are happy to be of service to our members and colleagues from South East Asia Radiographers Conference (SEARC) member societies to participate in this event by inviting and sponsoring their participation. I would like our members to fully utilize this opportunity to learn from the faculty members who will be sharing their knowledge and experiences.
Once again, I would like to thank all delegates for your presence and hope that you will bring home with you enhanced knowledge, make new friends and acquaintances and enjoy Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia.

Welcome Message From Deputy Minister Of Health, Malaysia
On behalf of the Ministry of Health Malaysia, it is an honour to be invited to pen a few words to commemorate the 25th Annual Scientific Meeting of The International Society For Clinical Densitometry 2019 (ISCD) today.
The burden of osteoporosis and related fragility fractures is a major problem particularly in the Asian population. It is estimated that by 2050, the Asian population aged 65 years and above, will number above 936 million. By then, between 4.5 - 6.3 million hip fractures are predicted to occur worldwide of which half will occur in Asia (Ching-Lung Cheung et al, 2018).
Malaysia’s data on the incidence of osteoporosis indicates that in 1997, the prevalence of hip fracture in Malaysia among individuals above 50 years of age was 90 per 100,000 (MyHealth, Ministry of Health Malaysia). In 2007, it was reported that the incidence of osteoporosis in 2007 climbed to 218/100,000 for women and remained at 88/100,000 for men (Lee JK & Khir ASM, 2007). While the common sites of fractures are the spine, wrist and hip; it is hip fractures that is associated with high morbidity and a mortality rate of up to 20% in the first year post-fracture. Of those that survive the first year, the majority will never fully recover. For us in the ministry, our grave concern is the direct hospitalization cost for hip fractures in 1997 which was estimated conservatively at RM 22 million (Lee JK & Khir ASM, 2007). The projected number of hip fractures in the 9 Asia countries will be 1.12 million in 2018, and it will reach 2.56 million by 2050, equivalent to 2.28-fold increase when compared to 2018. Malaysia is projected to have the highest (3.55 fold) increase in the total number of hip fractures by 2050. I would like to welcome the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) to our shores and all international delegates to this meeting especially those from our neighbouring countries. This is the first time ISCD is having their Annual Scientific Meeting in Asia Pacific region, and it is our great honor that ISCD has selected Kuala Lumpur as the venue for the first Annual Meeting in Asia Pacific region. I am sure that this meeting provides us a platform and great opportunity to learn best practices in managing osteoporosis and osteoporosis related fragility fractures.
I am sure that months of planning and meetings between ISCD and our local co-host societies, Malaysian Osteoporosis Society (MOS) and Malaysian Society for Radiographers (MSR), went into crafting informative Densitometry Courses and Certification Examination and an exciting scientific programme offered within these few days. I encourage all delegates to make the most from this meeting and harness the opportunities to network with world renowned experts in the field of musculoskeletal health.
I would like to recognise the effort of the local Scientific Committee led by Dato’ Dr Lee Joon Kiong and co-hosts Malaysian Osteoporosis Society (MOS) and the Malaysian Society of Radiographers (MSR). I also congratulate in advance the launch of the Fragility Fracture Network of Malaysia (FFNM).
Finally, I wish everyone, participants and speakers, a fruitful conference and I hope that we all gain from the planned scientific program over these few days and also from the friendships that will be made and fortified during this meeting.
Warmest Regards,
DR LEE BOON CHYEDeputy Minister of Health Malaysia
