50 years B care and imagination

Chairman

This year has been alandmark year for ourCharity as we celebratedour 50th Anniversary.

In the past year even moreguests booked and enjoyed arespite holiday at our threecentres than ever before, providing yet more evidencethat we must increase our capacity. In 2013 weannounced our intention to double our social impact byincreasing the number of Vitalise centres from three tosix. To this end, we are in the process of setting up aCapital Campaign Board to lead the campaign andraise the considerable funds we need in order to makethis a reality.

While we pursue our commitment to growth, we havenot lost sight of nurturing our current service and wecontinue to invest in our people and facilities for thebenefit of our guests. Every day we go to extraordinarylengths to create happy, memorable experiences forthose we care for.

Our 50th Anniversary gave us the opportunity to holdspecial birthday parties at each centre every week, andto enjoy a wonderful gala reception at City Hall inSeptember, where we were able to celebrate withmany of the Vitalise family.

My thanks to every person – guest, volunteer, staffmember and supporter – who has woven Vitalise’swonderful 50 year legacy; here’s to the next 50!

Mindy SawhneyChairman

Chief Executive

The demand for ourservices drives ourcommitment to createadditional centres in thoseregions of the country thatwe do not serve wellcurrently.

We are now working on plansto establish new Vitalise centres in Somerset, the Midlands and North Yorkshire.

Visit England recognised our unique service with theaward of 4 Star ratings for guest accommodation ateach of our centres. I am also proud to announce thatwe once again passed a round of CQC inspections withflying colours.

Despite operating near full for most of the weeks of theyear and having limited financial resources to invest, wehave continued with our much needed refurbishmentprogramme, and are now upgrading our guest bedrooms.

We were honoured to announce Samantha Cameronas our new Patron in July 2013 and our celebrity VicePresidents also gave us their valuable support in the year.Esther Rantzen visited Netley Waterside House in May,Arthur Smith starred at our 50th anniversary galareception in September and Dame Judi Dench was theface of our Christmas fundraising campaign.

In the year ahead we look forward to doing what we doeven better and to laying concrete foundations toincrease the number of Vitalise centres from three to six.

Everybody needs a breakVitalise understands that people with disabilities andcarers often have to contend with more than their fair

share of moneyworries. This is whywe subsidise the costof every break throughour own fundraisingefforts. As a furtherraft of support, weallocate additionaldiscretionary fundingthrough the JoanBrander Memorial Fund, providing a respitelifeline for people inparticular financialhardship.

Beyond respiteVitalise is the largest provider of respiteholidays with on-call nursing care forpeople with disabilities in the UK.

Vitalise touches the lives of all who comeinto contact with us, changing the lives ofpeople living with disability through thesimple experience of happiness.Underpinning all we do is one unwaveringbelief – everybody needs a break.

Our breaks enable our guests to enjoynew experiences, make new connectionsand share in the gift of friendship. We create an environment where ourguests can reconnect to their manyriches and share them with one another.Only Vitalise does this.

“ I had never spent a single night away fromSally-Ann before her break with Vitalise .She said to me ‘Mum, you’re my district nurse,my physio, my carer, you do so many jobs, ifI can go somewhere where I’m looked after thenyou can just be my Mum’ and that reallytouched me. So many people would view Vitaliseas just going on a break but it ’s so much morethan that. At Vitalise Sally-Ann said that shedidn’t even feel disabled.”

JUNE BURDEN

“ I really love coming here, cos it ’s such a good experience. It ’s always packed full of stuff to get you motivated andout of yourself. I do everything here . I find that cominghere, it breaks the ice, doing karaoke and that, it bringsyou out of yourself. You’ve got to express yourself.Coming here it ’s like a family from home, the same asif I went round to my aunts and uncles. Life’s too short.”

Caring for carersVitalise understands only too well that without the escape valve of regulartime away from caring, the pressure of caring can take a devastating physicaland emotional toll on carers. Our breaks offer carers the chance to take vitaltime out from caring and have a genuinely guilt- and stress-free break, securein the knowledge that their loved ones are being looked after with the samecare they would provide themselves.

Vital volunteersVitalise runs the largest residential volunteerprogramme of any UK charity. Each year anarmy of volunteers of all ages andbackgrounds give up their free time to live andwork at our centres. The friendship and funvolunteers bring to a Vitalise break isinvaluable. We couldn’t do what we dowithout them.

Through the volunteer experiences we provide,we are changing perceptions of disability everyday and inspiring our volunteers to grow asindividuals. 95% said volunteering hadimproved their understanding and attitudetowards people with disabilities and 8 out of10 said it had inspired them to get moreinvolved and play a greater part in society.*

Planning for growthOur own research has revealed that there are over half a million peoplewith disabilities in the UK who would benefit directly from the kind ofbreaks Vitalise provides*. The need for high quality respite breaks likethose provided by Vitalise has never been higher. In response to this highand increasing need, we aim to open three more centres across the UK,which will double our current capacity. By carefully choosing the locationsof these new centres, we plan that none of our new or existing guests willhave to travel for more than two hours to reach a Vitalise centre.
