Biography of Mrs Dominique Ouattara

Journey of an active woman and a woman of heart

Mrs Dominique Claudine Nouvian Ouattara is the current First Lady of Côte d'Ivoire. She is Ivorian of french origin, and the wife Dr. Alassane Ouattara, Pres-ident of the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire. Mrs Dominique Ouattara is mother of two.

Carreer

H.E. Mrs Dominique Ouattara, First Lady of Côte d'Ivoire, had a successful career as an entrepreneur, including in the real estate sector, before her husband is elec-ted President. In 1979, she became CEO of the AICI International Group, which operates in Africa and Europe. After rein-forcing her company’s presence in Côte d’Ivoire, particularly in Yamoussoukro, Bouaké, San-Pedro and Jacqueville, Dominique Ouattara established AICI in France in 1989. After a first branch in Pa-ris, AICI established a branch in cannes in 1991.

In 1993, « Malesherbes Gestion », a real estate management company, which ma-nages more than 200 buildings in Paris, enlarged the expansion of AICI Interna-tional Group. The company also settled

in Gabon in 2001 and in Burkina Faso in 2006.

Meanwhile, Mrs Dominique Ouattara was appointed CEO of EJD Inc. in 1996, a company that manages Jacques Des-sange Institute in Washington. She ac-quired Jacques Dessange franchises in the United States in 1998 and then be-came CEO of the French Beauty Services, which manages the US franchise’s brand.

After the election of Mr. Alassane Ouat-tara as President and in accordance with the campaign pledges made by the latter,

she gave up her commitment as busi-ness executive, distanced herself from all professional duties and sold Dessange USA franchises to Dessange Paris Group, to devote herself exclusively on her role as First Lady of Côte d’Ivoire and to her Foundation.

Social actions

Actively involved for two decades in the humanitarianfield, Mrs. Dominique Ouattara created in 1998 Children of Africa Foundation which works in 11 African countries in-cluding Côte d'Ivoire. Since then, she set up a genuine multinational organization with a dozen volunteers eager to improve the lives of disadvantaged children on the African continent. Twenty years af-ter its inception, the Children of Africa Foundation still provides assistance to children.Mrs Dominique Ouattara's actions are as follows:

The fight against child labour

As a result of her commitment to elimi-nate the worst forms of child labour in Côte d’Ivoire in all spheres of economic life, Mrs. Dominique OUATTARA was named Chairman of the National Over-sight Committee to Combat trafficking, exploitation and child labour (CNS), on November 3, 2011 by the President of the Republic. The committee’s role is to monitor and evaluate Government’spolicies to eliminate child labour and child exploitation. the CNS and its par-tners developed two National Plans of Action (2012-2014 and 2015-2017) to significantly reduce the worst forms of child labour in the country. The third ac-tion plan (2018-2020) is currently being implemented.

Her Foundation’s latest project is the construction o three shelters for children in Soubré, Ferkessédougou and Bouaké

(Côte d’Ivoire), to assist children who have been exposed to trafficking and res-cued from the hands of child traffickers. These shelters will be providing tempo-rary care and protection pending family reunification. The first shelter for child-ren opened its doors in April 2018 in the city of Soubré. The shelter of Bouaké will be inaugurated at the end of 2019.

As a result of Mrs Dominique Ouatta-ra's meeting with ILO Director General, A list of hazardous work prohibited for children and light work authorized for children aged 13 to 17 years old has been drawn up. This significant improvement has led the United States to reclassify the country on the list of countries making considerable efforts to eradicate the scourge.

In addition, Mrs. Dominique Ouattara organized the Conference of First Ladies of West Africa and Sahel in Abidjan in November 2017 in order to encourage the implication of other First Ladies.

Promotion of Health

Ms Dominique Ouattara also pays par-ticular attention to health, with an in-creased commitment to the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and the promotion of paediatric treat-ment, a mission for which UNAIDS has distinguished and appointed her as a Special Ambassador. She has joined different groups which fight against AIDS such as: the Organisation of Afri-can First Ladies Against AIDS (OAFLA) in 2011 and the Association Synergie

Africaine. She also participated in First Ladies' meetings in Deauville (France), Bamako (Mali), Accra (Ghana), and other major events around the world to adress the issue. In this context, she conducted numerous pleas in favour of organisa-tions that works to adress this problem, and to strengthen the technical platform of health facilities, especially maternity hospitals. In addition, the foundation has orgnized several public health cam-paigns for the financially challenged populations to inoculate, deworm and examine the eyes of many children free of charge. Several thousand of them have even received corrective lenses or have surgery free of charges.

Mrs Dominique Ouattara has also initia-ted the construction of a 130-bed hospital for the Mother and the Child, in order to contribute to the reduction of maternal, neonatal, infant and juvenile mortality and morbidity. Built on a four and a half hectare site, the Mother and Child Hospi-tal of Bingerville has, in addition

to its various pointe services, a pediatric oncology wing. The level 5 health facility opened its doors to the public in March 2018, during the 20th anniversary of the Children of Africa Foundation.25 billion CFA francs, including 18 bil-lion CFA francs for construction and 7 billion CFA francs for equipment, have been allocated to the implementation of this project, financed by the Foundation's generous donors.

Women's empowerment

Because she strongly believes in the ma-jor role of women in the economy, Mrs Dominique Ouattara created in 2012, a Fund for Women (FAFCI), to finance their microprojects. The objectives of this fund are to empower women by impro-ving their incomes, strengthen their en-trepreneurial capacities and fight unem-ployment.The FAFCI is available to all women in Côte d'Ivoire at a reduced interest rate of 1% a month including tax . To date, 200,000 women across Côte d'Ivoire have received financing. The fund currently has a capital of CFAF 12 billion. Women's group have also

received agricultural equipment and inputs, and are provided with a training in business management.

Promotion of education and other social actions

In order to contribute to the full develop-ment of the community, and to providechildren with a better future, Mrs. Domi-nique Ouattara, proceeds everyyear to the distribution of school kits to children and offer support toschools and feeding programmes. In addition, Several centers for vulnerable children in Africa and particularly in Côte d'Ivoire receive financial assistance from Children of Africa Foundation. First Lady Dominique OUATTARA also organizes mother’s day andChristmas celebration across the country for mothers and children. This clearly shows her commitment for the wellbeing of all.

President's welcomeDear friends,It gives me great pleasure to present to you in this report the projects we have implemented as part of our social commitment for 2018. Like every year, we have carried out many projects at the Children of Africa Foundation in the fields of education, social and health. I am pleased to present to you what has been done in a few pages.2018 was marked by the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Children Of Africa Foundation. Indeed, this incredible human adventure started in 1998, with the aim to provide support to underprivileged children on the African continent. 20 years later, I am extemely happy to celebrate with you all these years of generosity, sharing and altruism along with eminent personalities from five continents at the 7th gala of the Children of Africa Foundation. Once again, I would like to thank all the generous souls who have supported us to improve the living conditions of children and their mothers. Through your support and your charitable contributions we were able to inaugurate the Mother and Child’s Hospital in Bingerville on March 16, 2018, and then the Soubré reception centre that same year. Two other reception centres are under construction in Ferkéssédougou and Bouaké, in addition to a group of schools in Abobo. Let’s keep the experience going....Many thanks to all of you for your invaluable contribution.

As health is an essential factor in the well-being of populations, the Foundation's mission is to help people benefit from adequate health care.

The Foundation fights poverty by supporting people in their community development initiatives. It places particular emphasis on promoting women's entrepreneurship, as independent women are better able to take care of their children.

The mission of the Children Of Africa Foundation is to provide children with learning tools that will open the doors of knowledge to build their future.

Several centres for vulnerable children have received financial support from the Children of Africa Foundation. The Foundation also has its own shelter for children called "La Case des Enfants" in Abidjan-Plateau.

Overview of the 4 areas of

activity

Page 15: Annual Report2018 - childrenofafrica.org · 255,164 children have free access to reading 142,814 84,027 children were immunized against meningitis and typhoide fever 108,000 school

The education sector LA CASE DES ENFANTS

The 2017-2018 school year was once again a successful year for the Children living at the shelter. With the support of supervisors, children have significantly improved their grades, especially in spelling and mathematics. The success rate has reached 98% when moving up to the next grade. All fifth graders have passed their final exams and are now in the sixth grade.

Likewise, all the students in grade 9 have passed their final exams and have moved to grade 10 or vocational training.

We congratulate them for the good work and urge them to keep on working hard for the new school year 2018-2019.

La Case des Enfants is a haven for orphans and poor children. It was taken over by Mrs Dominique Ouattara . The shelter accommodates about 60 children and provides all the basic

needs(Shelter, Food, Medical care, Education, and Recreation and domestic skills)

Great academic achievement this year

Activities of the Children's shelter for 2018

In 2018, the little residents of the shelter had the opportunity to participate in several fun and educational activities. We can mention the premiere of "Black Panther" and the Ivorian 3D animation film on the life of President Houphouët-Boigny. The children also participated in FEMUA Kids 2018 in Anoumabo, in relaxation outings at the Saint Michel Equestrian Centre, Jacqueville and Ile Boulay as well as in various games rooms in Abidjan.

A NEWCOMER AT THE CHILDREN'S SHELTERHis name is Foua Bi Emmanuel, he is 5 years old, he arrived at La Case in April 2018 following a call for help to Madame Dominique Ouattara . She immediately gave instructions to rescue him. due to abuse, the little boy couldn't stand on his own for long enough failing to keep his head straight, he staggered and could not hold objects in his hands. The abuse had seriously decreased his psychomotor skills. He was first of all treated at the Mother and Child's Hospital of Bingerville. After 6 months,

Emmanuel has taken over forces helped by a balance diet the affection and attention he received from the team. Today, with a brave step, a smile on his lips and a bagpack, our little "Manu" has entered kindergarten.

Residents of "la Case" welcomed on March 18, 2018, the famous American actor Gary Dourdan with happiness and joy. He was accompanied by some guests who came to attend the Children of Africa Foundation's Gala Dinner. It is also with great emotion that the children performed songs and dances to entertain their guests. Indeed, these are exciting moments that will remain vivid in the minds of our dear residents for a long time to come.

Before children's departure for hollidays , the shelter organised a big fair during which several games and activities took place for children to have a good time. A prize-giving ceremony was also held in the afternoon to congratulate the children on their excellent academic results and their good behaviour in different areas: relationship with others, respect, cleanliness, solidarity...

As every year before leaving for holidays, the children of "la case" went to the Temps Dance Beach Centre in Jacqueville on 28th June 2018. It was a good opportunity for the kids to enjoy many outdoor games, sports activities and games in the pool. All this combined with an excellent meal under the large straw mat. They left the place full of wonderful memories.

While visiting Côte d'Ivoire, the international football player Mamadou Sakho visited the Foundation's home on 30 June 2018. During this visit, he offered food and non-food items to the young residents.
