Teachers must continuously enhance their professional development to prepare

students for jobs that do not yet exist, for technologies that have not yet been

invented, and to solve problems we do not yet know are problems. Spotsylvania

Endowment for Education Development (SEED) grants are available to any

employee of Spotsylvania County Public Schools for financial assistance for an

activity that enhances professional growth.

SEED grants are awarded in the amount of up to $500. The purpose of the

Spotsylvania Education Foundation’s (SEF) SEED Grant program is to provide

Spotsylvania County Public School staff funding for professional development,

certifications, and college classes. SEED grants are distributed twice a year, once

in the Fall and once in the Spring. The total number of grants is dependent upon

fundraising and donations throughout the year as well as designated funds as

determined by the SEF board.

Jeans Days support the Spotsylvania Endowment for Educational Development,

SEED Grants. Thank you to all the teachers and staff who purchased Jeans Days

tickets in support of these grants. A total of $6,609 was raised and disbursed.

Educators are continuously finding unique ways to prepare students to excel

in a dynamic global society. Each year, teachers and school

employees present proposals for uniquely achieving Spotsylvania County

Public Schools’ curricular goals, strengthening students’ personal

development, and/or encouraging links with the community in their schools

or classrooms. Innovatively Developed Educational Activity (IDEA) grants

fund these proposals that creatively and innovatively engage our children

and enrich the learning experience of Spotsylvania students.

IDEA grants are available to Spotsylvania County Public School employees

in the amount of up to $2,000 for unique, creative, and innovative proposals

that positively impact the student learning experience. IDEA grants are

distributed in the Fall. The total number of grants is dependent upon

fundraising and donations throughout the year as well as designated funds

as determined by the SEF Board.

This year, the Foundation received 57 IDEA proposals ranging from

pre-school to post high school preparation. Topics ranged from science,

technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to fine arts, career

and technical, and special needs. Many thanks to Rappahannock

Electric Cooperative, Fredericksburg Orthodontics, and Mary Ball

Woman’s Club for adopting IDEAS and sponsoring grants. 14 of the

proposals were awarded IDEA grants in the value $11,908.

Congratulations to the teachers for their IDEAs.

ADOPT AN IDEA

Lead the way! You can help a teacher inspire Spotsylvania

students. Adopt an IDEA, Innovatively Developed Educational

Activity, and see what happens. Choose a category to see IDEA

projects and how they can enrich the learning experience of

Spotsylvania students. You can adopt one of many IDEA

projects designed by Spotsylvania teachers to creatively and

innovatively engage our children.

Solar Cars: Racing into STEM!

(Harrison Road Elementary Jenna Conlee, Drew Flenard, Sawn Ruckle, Kara Watt,

Dianne Clowes-ITRT)

We want to transform our 4th and 5th grade students into automotive design engineers.

The challenge: to design a scale model car that uses a solar cell to power an electric

motor car. Weight, gear ratios, sun angle, aerodynamics, traction, friction, front or

rear wheel drive and wheelbase are all design factors that are considered. Finally,

students will race their cars to determine the most successful design.

Everybody Loves Clay!

(Chancellor Middle School: Shannon McKay)

Over 400+ students each academic year will benefit from the purchase of a Kiln for

Chancellor Middle School. Without a kiln, clay is just decomposing dirt. With a kiln,

clay can become a valuable piece of artwork that can survive for thousands of years!

A kiln is a special oven that reaches temperatures up to to 2300F and heats clay

projects into finished works of art. With a kiln, students will have access to the clay

medium and learn how to use a potter’s wheel, experiment with hand-building, create

functional and decorative ceramics, learn how to mix glazes and also enjoy actually

using their own functional artwork.

Empty Bowls Art Project: Feeding the Mind, Body, and Soul!

(John J Wright Educational & Cultural Center: Alternative Education: Angela Coughenhouer, Melody Lewis)

The purpose of the Empty Bowls Art Project is to provide at-risk students with the opportunity to partner with a vital community

agency, Empower House, which offers services for people impacted by domestic violence. The project will provide a two-pronged

learning experience for the students. The first prong will involve student participation in a series of healthy relationship workshops to

learn about teen dating violence, domestic abuse and intervention services and resources. The second prong will consist of learning

how to use a pottery wheel to create usable ceramic bowls for the annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser hosted by Empower House. The

combined experience will help students develop empathy for others, use art an outlet for social and emotional expression, display

their unique talents and build self-esteem.

Pet Literacy: Doggie Day Spa and PAWS

for Reading

(Massaponax High School Agriculture CTE:

Heidi Davis)

The Pet Literacy Program is a career-based

service learning project that builds community

bridges between local animal rescue

organizations, students in the small animal care

classes and elementary aged youth. This two

phase program offers students the opportunity to

gain hands-on career skills while providing

community service for rescue organizations and

mentoring elementary students in literacy based

PAWS for reading days. In phase #1 students will

run a dog day spa in order to build career skills in

the pet industry. Secondly, in March students will

partner with the pets and use Trade books as part

of Read Across America Day to help elementary

students master language skills and incorporate

math and science into literacy programs.

Engineering Dessert

(Spotsylvania Career and Technical

Center: Tim McLeod, Lee Dematteo,

Austin Sarmento, Emily Dematteo)

One of the recent major revolutions in the

engineering world has been the

advancement in tools to facilitate rapid

prototyping, the ability to quickly fabricate

complex structures for testing, evaluation of

concept, or production applications. One of

the tools that have proven to go well

beyond the development and prototyping

task is the 3D printer which is used in a

variety of production applications. The

focus of this project is to explore the

applications of 3D printing to Culinary Arts.

In particular, the project will focus on the use of 3D printing as a tool for fashioning various edible decorative elements for enhancing

desserts not just esthetically, but also augmenting the pleasure of the palate.

One Thousand Paper Cranes

(Riverbend High School: Gini Greenlaw)

Students will read a book and discuss the story of Sadako; a Japanese girl who died of leukemia associated with the atomic bomb the

United States dropped our Hiroshima. We will discuss the story of how her dedicated classmates worked together to build a

monument to Sadako in Hiroshima’s Peach Park. Together we will fold 1000 origami cranes and send them to be displayed at the

monument, along with a message for peace. Participating students will get the opportunity to learn about the atomic bomb, World

War II, origami and great literature.

Wilderness Health Fair

(Wilderness Elementary: Sylvia Henderson, Jena Johnson, Bridgette Gipson, Diane Pultz, Kelly Sparr, Robin Blackard, Nancy

Wingart)

Our school health education fair is sponsored by the 5th grade class and is a collaborative effort between students, teachers, P.T.A,

school nurse, SCS Resource Center and community health agencies. Students contact, through letter writing, local area health

agencies to help with personnel representation, equipment and demonstrations. The school community is then invited to our health

education fair that is designed to be fun and informative about current health issues facing young children today (topics include

Bullying/Internet safety, Children’s fitness/childhood obesity, Nutrition/health food, Drug/alcohol tobacco awareness and Car/seatbelt/

texting safety).

Spotsylvania County Special Games

(Massaponax High School: Jennifer Brawn)

The Spotsylvania County Special Games is an event for students with disabilities held at Massaponax High School. Students from

every school in the county gather at Massaponax for a day of friendly competition and celebration of abilities. Students who

participate face a variety of challenges from physical handicaps to intellectual disabilities, autism and more. These student athletes

participate in track and field events, sports and games as well as have the option of activities such as a moon bounce, dunk tank, craft

project and drum circle. Massaponax students volunteer to be typical peer buddies and helpers for the day. These students gain a

sense of respect and understanding for people with disabilities, as well as create a friendship with our student athletes. It’s a fun

filled and enriching day for all involved.

2014-15 Elementary School Technology Fair

(Courtland High School: Sidney Robinson, Laveta Nutter)

The objective of this program is to introduce and expose elementary school students to the World of Technology. At the Technology

Fair, Courtland High School technology students will bring to the elementary students an event where we present technical infor-

mation, training and projects. Each high school student will select and create a lesson, design an activity to perform and teach the

lesson at the fair. Approximately 250 to 500 students are divided into small groups and sent to a station where they are given a fifteen

minute lesson and an activity assignment. All technology stations are governed my one or more of the Elementary School Standard

of Learning.

Culture a la Carte Festival

(Chancellor Middle School, Robert E Lee Elementary: Lesa Randall, Katrina Negley, Rhonda Noe)

The Culture a la Carte Festival is a cross-curricular event that celebrates music, art and world languages in our community. It

involves students in K- 12th grades from all Spotsylvania County Schools and showcases achievement in music, art and language.

The festival engages students by learning from students through hands on activities. The 7th annual event was held March 1, 2014

with approximately 3600 people attending and participating. Our 8th annual event will be held at Courtland High School on Saturday,

march 7th, 2015. Our goal each year seeks to build on last year’s success with a higher percentage of teacher and student

participation and a greater variety of interactive cultural activities.

Plastiline Figure Sculpture

(Massaponax High School: Patricia Atkinson, Carter Corbin)

Advanced level art students benefit highly from utilizing a variety of materials and techniques. Sculpture is a celebrated and ancient

form of creation throughout the centuries and a pivotal part of the world of Art. Working three dimensionally is an incredible outlet for

learning that gives a new and different perspective on the creative process and how to overcome spatial challenges. I would like my

Art students to use Plastiline clay with a wire armature to create figure sculptures. This project would not only be highly engaging to

students, but afford them the opportunity to explore their own modern style and individuality while following the guidelines of a classic

technique that has been revered for thousands of years.

French is not just French Toast and French Fries

(Riverbend, Massaponax, Courtland & Spotsylvania High School: Beth Marshall, Michelle Silveestri, Ctthy Schneck, Rebecca

Waurio)

This project is a county-wide effort for high school French students to reach out to the middle and elementary schools to serve as

ambassadors for the French language in our global world today. French high school students will visit neighboring schools to create

a language outreach and summer camp where they will do hands-on activities with middle and elementary students to help open

their eyes to the French-speaking world. These students will serve as peer mentors through the use of mini-lessons including

videos, pen pals, and stories focusing on communication in French and exposure to the Francophone world.

Come on Ring Those Bells Expanded!

(Riverbend High School: Linda Jennings, Mr.

Aaron Noe, Michelle Westfall)

This project is designed for students with

special needs to achieve and experience

success and at the same time, be included in

the school environment and the community at

large. This is being accomplished by the

students learning a repertoire of songs

played with color-coded handbells. This year

we would like to continue to increase their

musical repertoire, play at more school

events and perform more times in the

community at large. The bell ensemble has

been asked to collaborate this year with the

Stafford Regional Handbell Society.

Poetry: A Slam Dunk for Learning

Part II

(Battlefield & Thornburg Middle School: Thomas Conway, Jordan Stroh)

A Poetry Slam reinforces the English curriculum and exposes students to a healthy and artistic way to express emotion. Students

write poems incorporating figurative language, theme, characterization, and elements of narrative structure. At the end of the year,

we hold a Poetry Slam for all 7th grade students to share their poems and we celebrate growth as writers. We also publish a Poetry

Compilation for students to home, to place in our school library and to use to inspire the next class of students.

Dr. Jerry Hill Leadership Grant

The Dr. Jerry Hill Leadership Grant in the amount of $1,000 is designated for a classroom teacher who

desires to expand classroom leadership skills and work with his or her school faculty in a collaborative

effort to promote professional growth and improve educational services. The inaugural recipient of the Dr.

Jerry Hill Leadership Grant is Kristen Weidle, Teaching and Learning Coach supporting Battlefield

Middle School and Thornburg Middle School. Kristen is working on her Doctorate in Educational

Leadership. She works as a student-centered partner for teachers, responsible for modeling and guiding

instructional best practices and embedded professional learning. She looks for ways to make connections

with teachers to advocate for new teaching styles and bringing ingenuity into schools. Kristen’s goal is to

help teachers improve student learning by identifying classroom instruction strategies, reflecting on the

impact of strategies, and modifying and adapting until finding the best strategy to maximize the potential of

each learner. Kristen consistently seeks ways to connect with teachers and administrators in order to

support student learning. She is intuitive in recognizing needs and adept at recognizing solutions to those

needs. A core value of Spotsylvania County Public Schools is to develop visionary leaders who embrace

change and possibilities. Kristen is one of these leaders. She affects positive change in the classrooms

and schools where she works.

The Spotsylvania Education Foundation congratulates Kristen Weidle as the recipient of the Dr. Jerry Hill

Leadership Grant. Find more Information on the Dr. Jerry Hill Leadership Grant at http://
