Excellence’

At Cwmafan Primary School lessons are delivered through the medium of English. Our aim is to achieve high academic standards within a happy, caring and stimulating environment. We have a dedicated and skilled teaching staff and non teaching staff who encourage the children to enjoy their work, to have a sense of responsibility and to show consideration for others. We hope to develop individual strengths to their fullest potential and there are many opportunities offered in music, sport and creative activities alongside the academic programme of the National Curriculum and the Foundation Phase. Great value is placed in the role parents play in their children’s education. Our belief is that it is only by entering into a partnership that parents and teachers ensure that each child may make the best of his or her opportunities. It is our aim to foster and build good and lasting “Home/School” links. Through careful organisation, the school attempts to give to the children what is best in education. In all our activities we try to work as a family whose members have a sense of purpose, belonging and a feeling of being responsible to the school and to the community. Mrs Claire Jones

It is the duty of the Governing Body to make decisions about how the school is run. Governors have legal duties,

powers and responsibilities as a body but cannot act individually.

The Governing Body believes the aims of the school, as set out in the School Prospectus, should continue to be

pursued. Underpinning these aims is Cwmafan Junior School’s philosophy, that all our pupils are entitled to the very

best education possible, which the school endeavours to provide, in close partnership with parents.

Each term the following sub-committees meet and report back to the main Governing Body meeting:

*Buildings, Premises and Health & Safety

*Curriculum

Other issues relating to the budget, pupil activities, school performance, the curriculum and Special Educational

Needs are discussed. This meeting is viewed as an opportunity to celebrate our success as well as plan for the future.

The Work of the Governing Body Throughout the Year

The Governing Body has met frequently throughout the year to conduct an increasingly wide range of business associated with the life and activities of our school. Increased responsibilities now place far greater accountability on our Governing Body. Reports from the Headteacher are received regularly informing the Governing body of all aspects of school life – academic results, pupil progress, class organisation, curriculum organisation, staffing, financial matters, maintenance and all other matters considered to be the business of the Governing Body. Appointments for teaching and non-teaching staff are made by the Governing Body as and when necessary. Minutes of previous meetings, correspondence and various reports and educational documents received from the Education Authority, Welsh Assembly and other relevant agencies are detailed and are discussed as agenda items when required. Governors have visited the school to celebrate the many activities and events held during the year. Achievements gained by pupils, who are nominated by their teachers for endeavour and excellence throughout the year and also those who take part in out of school activities (sporting, musical etc), are celebrated throughout the year in morning, achievement and special assemblies. Governors have supported events such as the Christmas celebrations, community based projects, sporting, educational and musical activities to name but a few. Fund raising continues throughout the year and the Governing Body is more than ever grateful to members of staff and parents for their on-going efforts. Through careful organisation, the school, together with the Governing Body, parents and all other agencies attempt to give the children what is best in education. In all our activities we try to work as a family whose members have a sense of purpose, belonging and a feeling of being responsible to the school and to the community.

Financial Statement The statement of actual expenditure for the year ended 31st March 2017 is Appendix B at the back of this report.

In order to meet the needs of the school both present and future, to utilise best educational practices and to meet the needs and expectations of our parents and pupils, the school undertakes to maintain a continuous programme of professional development for all staff. Training and development needs will be determined at least annually by individual consultation. A training action plan will be agreed and implemented during the school year. Training and development agreed will be that required to enable teachers and non-teaching staff to effectively achieve the school’s aims.

In addition to these training days members of staff have attended a variety of courses during the academic year. These were in addition to school based in service training during “after school hours.”

Courses attended: Courses were attended by staff, both teaching and non-teaching, to support curriculum development and school improvement/development issues

Priorities for 2016 – 2017 as detailed in the school Development Plan are:-

To improve the standards of Literacy especially for free school meals pupils

To further develop the role of the governing body in monitoring and evaluating

pupil performance

To raise standards in Numeracy and further develop reasoning skills from Year

2 – Year 6

Attendance

The school complies with the LEA’s regulations for the recording of attendance as follows: Registers (Attendance) 1 There is a class register for each class within the school. 2 The names of children, admission numbers together with contact

information e.g. addresses and telephone numbers are included.

3 The registers are dated on a weekly basis. 4 The registers are marked at the beginning of

each morning and afternoon session. 5 The registers are closed 30 minutes from the beginning of registration.

Absenteeism When a child is absent, an explanatory note given to the class teacher on the child’s return is essential. If a child is absent for 3 days or more and parents have not contacted the school, we are required to investigate the absence. Official Registers are checked regularly by the Local Education Authority.

As you are aware, regular attendance and punctuality play a vital part in a child’s education. It is essential that pupils attend

regularly if they are to take full advantage of the educational opportunities available to them. The Educational Welfare Officer

works closely with the Headteacher to promote good attendance and to support families with difficulties.

Attendance for the school year 2016 / 2017 was 93.10 % which was below our school target. A target of 94% has been set for 2016 / 2017. An Action Plan to improve attendance has been put in place and will be closely monitored to ensure we reach our target. School liaises closely with the Local Authority to monitor attendance and punctuality. We have close contact with the Education

Welfare Officer whereby home visits, telephone calls and follow up visit

s are carried out to reduce absences in named pupils / families.

Choir and Brass The very well attended school choir has been practising regularly after school/ at lunch times each week throughout the year. The children have performed regularly including at a residential home for the elderly, during assemblies and in shows. Our thanks go to all the members of the choir, their parents for supporting them, and to Mrs Williams and Mrs Ware for their dedication and hard work throughout the year. Mrs Williams holds a weekly Urdd Club which this year got through to the Urdd Eisteddfod in Flint.

Achievement Assemblies We are continuing to hold achievement assemblies every Friday where staff can recognise children’s achievements within class during the preceding week and children can also bring to the attention of staff and peers achievements outside school. Children from each class are awarded ‘Pupil of the Week’ certificates and the ‘Housepoint’ cup is awarded fortnightly. We also operate an attendance award for the class with the highest attendance that week. An end of term assembly for all school leavers is held, to which parents and Governors are invited.

Visitors to the School

During the course of the year we have received many visits, a sample of which is listed below: Assemblies – Local Clergy/other assembly leads Pupil welfare Child health and dental services Educational consultants Theatre groups Dyffryn Comprehensive School - Transition Police – road safety awareness Fire Service – Fire safety talks PC Wozencroft – PSE sessions Cytun Techniquest

Primary Liaison Years 5 & 6 Pupils visited Dyffryn Comprehensive School throughout the year as part of their induction programme. They participated in sporting activities along with other primary feeder schools. Staff from Dyffryn Comprehensive School visited school throughout the year. Parents of Year 5 & 6 children were also invited to attend an open evening at the comprehensive school during the summer term. Staff from Dyffryn Comprehensive have visited Y6 during the second half of the Summer Term to give ‘taster’ lessons. Various days including Technology, Maths & Murder Mystery days have been very successful throughout the year. Year 6 really enjoyed an Activity & Barbeque Beach Day

School Lettings

The school has not been hired out this year.

Circulars and Reports We have received various circulars and reports in conjunction with school organisation and administration from the Welsh Governors and these are available on request or through the WAG website.

Parental Support We greatly appreciate the dedicated fundraising activities that parents have supported. The importance of this support, and the contribution of the community at large, cannot be understated and it is extremely gratifying for the staff to receive this level of support. We also appreciate the invaluable help of parents in classroom activities, class trips, at concerts and on numerous other occasions when help is always on hand, especially our dedicated group of reading helpers. In the last year some of the things that we have undertaken have been funded/part funded through contributions made through school fundraising events/activities. This includes subsidies for school trips and items for the Christmas Parties/selection boxes/Easter eggs. It also includes paying for some large purchases such as the I-pads and additional computer purchases. Thank you all.

The school makes wide use of the local environment and has linked with many outside agencies during the year such as: The Police Liaison Programme for Personnel Social and Health Education Margam Park Day Visits Road Safety Department Visits to School Fire Service Visits to School

Links With The Community

Our school enjoys the increasing support of an active Friends of Cwmafan Association which regularly holds events. The

association is open to everyone in the village who wishes to help to raise funds and support school activities. During 2016/

2017, Friends Association organised a number of events and raised funds for the benefit of our pupils.

Volunteers from the community continue to come into school to help in a range of activities and to assist in school / class visits.

We welcome and provide placements for students at school, to enable them to gain valuable experiences to equip them for the

world of work.

Links with the Police remain strong. Local police officers and PCSOs visit school on a regular basis. PC Ian Wozencroft delivers

Police Core Education lessons throughout the school. The focus for each lesson is age appropriate to the class and pertinent to

the interests and perceived dangers of pupils of specific ages e.g. alcohol, stranger danger, bullying.

We also have close links with the local church and chapel often welcome church members to deliver assemblies at school.

In addition visits are made from community dentists, the fire service, the health visitor etc.

Sport

All pupils take part in weekly physical education and games lessons as part of the National Curriculum during which pupils have

access to gymnastics, dance, games, athletics and outdoor adventure lessons.

In addition, pupils in Upper Key Stage 2 have access to swimming lessons at Aberavon Swimming Pool.

Older pupils continue to participate in competitions and festivals organised by the Wizards League (formerly known as The

Costain League). Sports include rugby and netball.

There a number of after school clubs which are sport based:- Netball, hockey, rugby, football & athletics. these are very

successful and popular.

Special Educational Needs Policy The Governing Body has statutory duties towards pupils with special educational needs, and also it must have regard to the Code of Practice when carrying out its duties towards all pupils with special educational needs – Code of Practice Section 157. The Governing Body must: 1 Do its best to secure that the necessary provision is made for any pupil who has special educational needs. 2 Secure that, where the ‘responsible person’ – the Headteacher or the appropriate governor – has been informed by the

LEA that a pupil has special educational needs, those needs are made known to all who are likely to teach him or her. 3 Secure that teachers in the school are aware of the importance of identifying, and providing for, those pupils who have

special educational needs. 4 Consult the LEA and the governing bodies of other schools, when it seems to them necessary or desirable in the interests

of co-ordinated special educational provision in the area as a whole. 5 Report annually to parents on the school’s policy for pupils with special educational needs. 6 Ensure that the pupil joins in the activities of the school together with pupils who do not have special educational needs,

so far as that is reasonably practical and compatible with the pupil receiving the necessary special educational provision, the efficient education of other children in the school, and the efficient use of resources.

The School has a comprehensive Policy for Equal Opportunities which has been adopted by the school’s

Governing Body. The Governing Body, Head Teacher and all staff, seek to promote equal opportunities and good relations between persons of different racial groups, able bodied and disabled persons and between males and females. Equal opportunity is promoted for everyone and throughout all aspects of school life at Cwmafan Primary School. Governors also follow legal requirements in making appointments and receive advice from the Local Authority’s Human Resource Department. At Cwmafan Primary School, we are committed to ensuring equality of education and opportunity for all pupils, staff and all

those receiving services from the school. We aim to develop a culture of inclusion and diversity in which people feel free to

close their disability and to participate fully in school life.

Organisation

The organisation of classes throughout the school is governed by pupil numbers and staffing restrictions. At the present time,

there are 14 full time classes & 2 part time nursery sessions

Curriculum Arrangements for Pupils With Additional Learning Needs

The school enters into regular consultation with representatives of the LEA in order to support pupils with additional learning

needs.

We want all pupils to feel equally valued at Cwmafan Primary School and so pupils with additional educational needs are

integrated into mainstream classes. When necessary, pupils may be withdrawn from class to work in a small group or on an

individual basis with a teacher or teaching assistant.

The school also makes use of LEA support staff to provide additional, specialised, teaching resources and advice.

Staff are in regular receipt of up to date training which is appropriate to the needs of pupils in our school.

The LEA has a policy for inclusion of all pupils including disabled pupils, which the school has adopted. The Additional Learning

Needs Policy has been reviewed during the last year and The Code of Practice is adhered to stringently. The school’s policy for

Additional Learning Needs can be viewed at school.

The school’s SEN Governor is Mrs Claire Jones .

At the present time we have a total of 44 pupils on the SEN register across the whole school, with a variety of additional needs.

A range of appropriate intervention strategies and support is given to these pupils on a daily basis.

Cwmafan Primary School is an English Medium School.

Welsh Second Language

Welsh is introduced as a second language in short, mainly oral lessons from the time the child enters school. Enjoyment in

learning the language is incorporated in a variety of situations: incidental, conversational, display and in singing. Welsh is used

in most areas of the curriculum and is an integral part of classroom life.

As pupils progress, they develop reading and writing skills in welsh in addition to oral skills.

Since Summer 2012, teacher assessments for Welsh as a second language have been made for all pupils at the end of Key Stage

2 and reported to parents. Assessment throughout Key Stage 2 is occurring and subject portfolios within school are being

developed.

We receive support and relevant teaching materials from Alison Streefland a peripatetic Welsh teacher who provides support

to all staff throughout the school.

We aim to promote bilingualism across the curriculum and aim to enable pupils to communicate effectively in English and

Welsh at a level appropriate to their age and ability. Bilingual development is on-going within the school and is often apparent

in most areas of the curriculum.

The Cwricwlwm Cymreig is also important in our pupils’ development and understanding of their Welsh heritage and is

reflected throughout the year in arrange of activities.

Security Arrangements The condition and state of repair of the buildings have been monitored by the Governing Body. All external doors are fitted with turn-buckle locks. Day time security locks are in use from 9.05 a.m. All children or visitors who arrive after this time must use the main entrance, and access is controlled by an electronic intercom system. All security locks can be opened from inside the building. Regulation fire doors have been fitted to all classrooms, hall & cloakroom entrances. All visitors to the school are asked to sign the Visitors’ Book and wear lanyards so they can be easily identified. There are 5 qualified first aiders in school.
