PRESIDENTS REPORT DENIS ABELIt’s been a busy season for the Club and I am honoured to be the Club President and have had the pleasure to lead a very active committee consisting of skilled, enthusiastic and dedicated people with many plans and ideas for the betterment of the Club.

I have the greatest pleasure in reporting a successful 2018/19 season for the Club. This success, both on and off the beach, is a reflection of the pride and commitment our members have for our Club and the honest dedication to community safety by every member, sponsor and supporter involved.

It is with a sense of satisfaction I write this annual report sharing some of the activities and success’ of the club While I draw attention to these activities, I am sure that I shall miss some so please accept my apology for any missing detail however, this doesn’t mean anything more than a poor recollection by me!

To all of our sponsors and Government, both large and small – thank you for your support and we look forward to a continued relationship. Without your funding our Club would not be in the position it is in today. Thank you. I would like to make a special mention to our major sponsor, Auto & General who besides having a gold sponsorship and suppling staff for our Christmas gift wrapping, have seen fit to continue their sponsorship. So I would like to thank Gerry and his staff for this.

Our relationship with the Kawana Waters RSL Sub Branch continues to strengthen this year. The continued support of the RSL has been overwhelming, thank you, and we look forward to growing this mutual partnership. The RSL has a prominent presence and we are proud to have the Kawana Waters Sub Branch on board and part of our business. I would like to thank Paul Clarke (Clarkey) and his team for another very successful year on the beach with zero fatalities. Paul has stepped into the role of Club Captain and has been an exceptional leader and is an asset to the Club and our Lifesaving Community. His attention to detail and likability has enabled him to seamlessly run the patrols and manage our lifesaving resources effectively. We all appreciate what you do and feel grateful for your dedication to the club and community safety. Thank you.

Again this year special mention to Daneeka and her training team, well done with the increase in the number of members doing awards along with an increase in the number of new members doing their bronze. The time and efforts you all put in over the weekends and evenings does not go unnoticed, we all appreciate what you do for the Club and the positive influence it has on our future. Also congratulations to Daneeka and Greera on gaining your Assessors appointments. Thank you.

At this stage I would like to mention and give a huge thank you to John Thorpe and Ross Christie who have decided to retire from training and assessing for the club. These gentlemen have given years of service to our club in the training area and are well respected in the life saving family.

We held our Youth SRC Camp again this year which has proven extremely successful and there are plans for holding a program again next year. Our dedicated Youth Leaders developed a week long program which is designed to engage, train and enthuse our 13-16 year olds. This type of program is designed to foster the transformation for our Nippers to become Patrolling members on the Beach.

We all have a common goal to achieve zero fatalities on Queensland beaches and Kawana has achieved this in the past year by keeping our 8km stretch of the Sunshine Coast safe. This Club has the job of safe guarding some of the toughest beach areas on the coast and hats off to you all for maintaining zero preventable deaths on the Currimundi to Point Cartwright beaches in 2018/19.

Without you all, the Kawana Surf Club would not be as prosperous as it is today and I’m proud to report a successful season. We appreciate all the hard work you all do.

TREASURER’S REPORT GRAEME MARSHALLSEA

As Honorary Treasurer, I provide the following commentary in relation to the overall performance of the Kawana Waters Surf Lifesaving Supporter’s Club Inc. (KWSLSSC) for the fiscal year ended 30/4/2019 as per the attached audited financial reports.

I would like to start with my acknowledgment and sincere gratitude to our volunteers and local community for all their fundraising efforts and generosity throughout the year. This Club has been completely self funded this year which is mainly attributable to the dedication of our Club members and committee who has fundraised $141 753 over the past 12 months.

The tremendous support from the local business community and local, state and Federal government has also been paramount to this result. We’ve been successful with $99 570 in grants with the most significant funding coming from – $31 770 Community Gambling Benefit Fund$23 090 DCS Sustainability Funding$16 045 Sunshine Coast Regional Council$8 903 Qld Fire and Emergency Services$6 300 Get Going Grant (State Government)$6 061 Strong Communities (Federal Government)$5 000 Beach Safety Equipment Fund

Overall Club reports a profit of $11 342 after $119 041 in depreciation. Please note, the appointed auditors, Accura Accounting, has made a special note (2) in the Financial Report referring to material uncertainty continuation as a going concern. As noted,

The association is heavily reliant on lease income from the Kawana Waters Surf Lifesaving Supporters Club Inc. to fund its operations. Kawana Waters Surf Lifesaving Supporters Club Inc trading has been poor and this means it will be difficult to determine the level of income that will be received in the future.

This is a concern and both committees are working together to mitigate this problem and actions plans have been put in place to not only reduce our reliance on the Supporters Club for income, but also to boost and support the Supporters Club during this challenging period. See Supporters Club Treasurer report for more detail regarding this matter.

Analysis by Sector

• Junior Activities report a profit of $22 070 after writing $11 213 back to the Balance Sheet in Capital Expenditure which is 100% increase on last year’s result. Overall fundraising is up 33% with the most notable increase in Sponsorship and donations totalling $22 005 which has been mainly sourced for our Annual Christmas Carols by the Beach and funding Sunday Morning Junior Beach Activities. The major sponsors include –

• Mirvac Shopping $10 000 • Logic Energy • Team Godwin • South East Tilt Trays • Kawana Dental • Smartland Early Learning • All Antica • Higgins Coatings • Goodstart Early Learning

Although the Carols was downscaled due to severe weather conditions predicted, we managed to hold this community event and honour our sponsorship arrangements. We’ve also been successful with Grants which contributes $13 000 to this result.

• Lifesaving operations has been the largest benefactor of the grants funds this year with $63 318 spent on replacing our lifesaving equipment. Patrol clothing and first aid expenses are up 35% and 21% respectively which is inherent of growth in patrolling members.

• Training and Education has been a significant contributor to our club’s growth this year. The Trainers and Assessors work tirelessly to provide first class training courses to the community however this area reports a marginal loss of $2 219 which is due to a shortfall in the course fees charged and the actual course costs incurred by the Club.

• Membership and Development report a loss of $1 072 which is mainly due to minimal fundraising and public awareness. This section is our link from JA’s converting to Patrolling members and needs to remain a viable section of the Club. Expenses are down 11% however income decreased 45% which resulted in this reported loss. Our competitors in this age group have been financially supported by the Masters section which have funded all swimming and carnival fees.

• Historically IRB’s are one of the largest contributors to the Club’s net returns however with their season adjacent to the rest of the


Club; often the result is blurred when reporting April 30. IRB’s raised $15 568 (increase of 46% compared to last year) and retained a profit of $1 798. New sponsorship agreement was secured with from Huff Electrical for $5k per annum. All other income was derived from the 200 Club and provision of Water Safety for local and state sporting events.

• Masters have raised $7 488 which is down 32% due to the reduction in community donations and raffles held throughout the year however managed to report a profit of $1 494. This result takes almost 60% of total income being utilised by subsidising our youth competitors for swimming and carnival fees.

• Overall administration costs were down $41,668 (10%) due to a focus on cost control.

• Administration income is also down $84 629, 21% with the most significant reductions in -

- Supporters Donations -104% - Administration Grants -42% - Profit on Sale of Assets -85%

Administration income increases include – - Clothing Sales +13% - Donations +36% - Sponsorship +16% - Subscriptions +19%

Special mention to Auto and General (Budget Direct) who have supported this Club for 11 years. This company is our largest sponsor and also provided over 150 man hours for our Gift Wrapping Fundraiser at the Kawana Shopping World this year. Their staff covered the majority of the wrapping shifts and directly contributed to this event being the most significant fundraiser for the year raising over $10 741 for the Club. I would also like to thank Nikki Firmin for her assistance and management of this event.

I would also like to thank our other Club sponsors McDonalds, The Hedge, Event Cinemas, Rebel Sports, Boost, Avenue Dental, The Fruit Shed, Banjos, and North Coast Boating. Please support these businesses.Supporters’ payments towards Lease and Loan obligations ($135,829) have provided the opportunity for Surf to continue to reduce debt obligations. Our balance sheet position has increased marginally by $11 342 compared to last year and a special mention to the reduction in the Westpac Building Loan by $66 408 leaving a balance of $395 706 as at 30 April.

In closing, I would like to thank the committee members from both Clubs along with all the staff and volunteers that have contributed to these financial results.

CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT PAUL CLARKE

I’d like to start by thanking all of our members for their time, dedication and skills to ensure that everyone who visited our beach went home safely to family and friends. A special note to Patrols 6 & 9 who were each involved in a critical incident and due to their diligence & efforts, there are 6 very thankful people back in the community after resuscitation / critical care.

Whilst our Buhk Wilkes scores may not reflect it, this was another very successful patrol

season for the club, with active membership growing to 258 people completing patrol hours on the beach, plus a fantastic number of members upgrading and taking on new awards. When you add in the fantastic growth in the number of kids participating in our nipper programs, we finished the season with over 500 people actively involved in the surf side of our little club.

Special thanks to the Surf Committee, Nipper Committee (and parents), plus Greera and Rachelle and all of the Patrolling members and Nippers who also put time into our fundraising efforts to help make running the surf operation possible.

I’d like to take the time to highlight the work of our Patrol Captains, who all put in extra time, chasing and organising members to ensure all of our awards are covered and coordinating people and equipment to make sure the beach is set up, packed up and washed down ready to start again. Special mention to Matthew Edwards for stepping up to become the PC for Patrol 13 this year - taking on the role when the club needed it, and also to Christian Schoener for taking responsibility when required on Patrol 4- both did an amazing job.

It was also another amazing year by our training team, who once again put through the most new awards of any club in our branch this season.

Thanks also to the following members for their extra time and commitment in keeping our operation humming along with a minimum of fuss: Ken Robertson (Gear Steward / trailer mechanic / lifejacket rack engineer), Rod Weller (weekly pool sessions), Rooster, Dion, Chris, Adam and Kane (IRB service, repairs and miracle work)

To give a better idea of the job we have done and the results we achieved, here are a few basic stats for you from the season (as registered in the LIMSOC system)

CHIEF TRAINING OFFICER REPORT DANEEKA KENT

It has been another fantastic season for Kawana Surf Club in Training and Education. Record numbers of new Surf Rescue Certificate and Bronze Medallion Awards have been gained throughout the 2018/2019 season. With a 30% increase from last season, our Active Members number is now sitting at 258 active

members with a retention rate of 84%. A massive amount of new awards have been gained this season, including awards in Advanced Resuscitation Techniques, First Aid, SSV, 4WD, IRB Driver and Crew, Bronze Medallion and Surf Rescue Certificates, it is safe to say we are well on the way of building up our club and members to the next level.

In relation to new lifesavers, during this season Training and Education ran 3 full length Bronze Courses and a youth SRC/Bronze Camp. All the courses that were run went through with fantastic results and we are proud to say that the skills and friendships gained is something that our members will never forget.

The youth camp which was run by Nina Eldridge and Michelle Hurley was a massive success with all the kids enjoying a week of learning, up-skilling and fun activities. We are looking forward to the youth camp in the upcoming 2019/2020 season which will be running through the second week of the September school holidays.

Our first Bronze Course for the 2019/2020 season will be kicking off on August 6th and will be run over 8 weeks. The dates for the rest of the Courses will be advertised as the season gets closer.

We will be seeing a few changes happening over the coming season, including changes to how the Skills Maintenance is run and how some courses will be delivered. These changes are going to hopefully make it easier on our members to be able to gain awards and to leave feeling confident with their skills. More information about this will be sent out closer to the start of the season.We have also been lucky to receive new training gear this season, including a new family of electronic manikins. We are grateful for the support of the surf club and other grants which allows us to get this new gear.

As Chief Training Officer I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in Training and Education. Without all the Water-safety, Trainers,

Assessors and participants who have been involved this season, we wouldn’t have been able to get to where we are today.

I would like to make a special mention to two extremely respected members of our surf club, Ross Christie and John Thorpe, who have given massive amounts of time and effort to Assessing and Training at Kawana and have decided it is time to hang up their assessor shirts. Both Ross and John have been amazing influences on me personally and I’m sure to many other members at Kawana Surf Club. Their knowledge and dedication to training and Kawana has always been outstanding and it is sad to know they won’t be assessing alongside the training team anymore. Anyone who has been lucky enough to work alongside Ross and John would be able to say they have learnt so much from them. We will be forever grateful for everything they have done. We look forward to seeing you guys on the beach in a much more relaxed patrolling environment.

One last thank you to everyone involved in Training and Education during the 2018/2019 season and we look forward to making 2019/2020 bigger and better again.

What a great year for nippers! This year nippers in Queensland celebrated its 50th anniversary. Our club also celebrated with nipper membership growing by 20%, making our club one of the fastest growing clubs on the Sunshine Coast. We had 268 kids this year, maxing out our green caps and filling our age groups.

Luckily we were able to obtain new age managers this year so that every age group had at least 2. We also gained more water safety and had many nipper parents get their bronze medallion. We saw quite a few new families putting their hands up to help, which is always great.

While our retention levels rest in the 70% region, moving from U13 – U14 it drops to 28%. This is an area we will push to increase retention in. The youth that do stay, however have an 80% transition rate into the active membership level of the surf club, which is excellent.

Nippers is a family sport and it’s great to see so many families in various levels of the club. Our beautiful beach was busy and full of happy kids each Sunday morning throughout the season.

SRC and Bronze Camp

This year our camp ran the last week of school holidays, just before nippers started. With a turnout of over a dozen kids, this was a huge success. Thanks to Kawana Dental for being the major sponsor for this camp.

Sunday Mornings

Nippers ran from early October to early March. We had great weather for Sunday mornings and only had to relocate a few times and cancel one nippers. The utmost safety and precautions are taken with nippers to ensure our kids are having fun, safely. Kawana beach, which a great beach to learn at, can be dangerous, and when that’s the case, we relocate to places like Mooloolaba spit.

Our continued growth over the past few years has meant our Sunday morning nipper sessions are busy. All age groups start at 8 am with a muster on the grass at 7:45 am. Any important information is relayed on to nippers and families here. Our green caps end at 9:30 am, and the other age groups end at 10:00 am.

Groups, depending on age, move through a rotating schedule of events such as wades, swims, boards, board rescue, and age awards. This year we also had the addition of an obstacle course to add variety. It was greatly received.

Our BBQ after is always busy and a great social time for families.

We had two twilight nipper sessions this year and while one got rained out, the other was a huge success. Many families stayed around after to socialise and have dinner at the club.

Carnivals

Some of our nippers engaged in a few pre-season carnivals, which are great for training and getting ready for the season. The carnival season was meant to kick off with Rainbow Beach in early October, however bad weather and dangerous surf, caused it to be cancelled and not rescheduled, which was unfortunate as this carnival is a competitor favourite.

Once carnival season kicked off, it was on! Our Blue Star nippers always make the club and our community extremely proud and this season was no exception. Kawana kids are known for their mateship and carnival etiquette as well as their strong competitiveness which we attribute to their attitude and effort along with their managers and coaches.

Board training sessions this year saw an increase of attendance and the skills these kids are learning are absolutely priceless and lifesaving.

Huge thank you to the coaches who show up and give their extra time to our kids, sometimes 2,3,4 times a week, encouraging them and helping them to grow. A special thank you to all the parents, water safety, age managers, officials, carnival managers and volunteers who help make carnival season possible. It is always an exciting time of the year and it’s rewarding to see the kids set new goals and work towards them.

On December 2 we held our own club carnival, which lets every nipper experience the competition and fun of a carnival. Even our green caps competed and it was a fun day had by all.

Branch and State Competitions

Unfortunately, Branch for the U8-U10’s, in Noosa, had to be cancelled due to bad weather and dangerous surf conditions. It was not rescheduled.

Branch events for the older kids managed to go ahead over a few days. All kids performed at their best and top results were given to:

Fundraising

This year our fundraising team ran several events including: a nipper board raffle, a colourful fun run, the Christmas Carols, a movie night, and we helped out with the surf club tin rattle in October and April.

It was our first year doing the colourful fun run and it was a great day had by all.

Our Christmas Carols were looking to be absolutely rained out, but with some quick rearranging, we were able to hold them indoors and they went off as usual! Thanks to our major carols sponsor this year; Kawana Shoppingworld, we could not have pulled this off without you. End of year

Nipper break up was helped on Sunday March 17. The weather was magnificent and we had heaps of fun playing on the giant inflatable from Crazy Town parties. Awards and trophies were handed out. Nipper of the year went to Dakota Luke. Nipper Captains were awarded to Dakota Luke and Riley Eldridge.

AGM

Our AGM was held on Sunday March 31 at the club. Our president of the last 2 years, who has been involved in the club in more ways than one, Sirkka Luke stepped down. Megan Lovell took her place as Chair of the Junior Activates. Some committee members left and others started up. YOUTH ‘AUSSIES’ CHAMPIONSHIPS 2019


YOUTH & SURF SPORTS REPORT - GARY HUME

What a great way to finish off the season for our star youth competitors, with a team of 10 U14-15 competitors attending the Youth Aussie Titles in late March/early April. The team consisted of Jo Scolaro, Max Munro, Koby Grant and Tom Sturgeon competing in the male events. Reese Collie, Alana Munro, Emily Davis

and Ella Ramalingam competing in the female events and Noah Davies and Braxon Holmstrom competing in the board riding competition. All of these kids were competing at their 1st Australian Surf Life Saving Championships.The individual competition proved very tough with some events having up to 180 entrants per event. After making their way through many preliminary rounds, we had 3 finalists in individual events, with Alana placing 6th in the swim final and Tom, Reese and Alana all making the Malibu board final.

The following day involved team’s competition, and we came away with a couple of outstanding results. In what would be the 1st Aussie Titles medal for the club in a long time (barring IRB competition), the U15 Female Cameron Relay team placed 3rd with Alana swimming, Reese paddling board and Emily and Ella running. This ended up being the final race of the day with a strong crowd assembled around a single final’s arena and this was a great way to finish off the carnival and season. Earlier, Alana and Reese placed 4th in the U15 Female Board Rescue final, another impressive result, which is one of the few times this pairing have been beaten in this event at any competition since they got together as tiny U11 nippers. After many years of internal competition amongst this group at a very high level, the girls currently have the upper hand, with the boys unfortunately unable to come away with results similar to their impressive Queensland Titles performances the month prior.

A couple of days following these events, our two U14 surfers hit the water for their competition. Not to be outdone by the above results, the club came away with another medal, with Braxon placing 3rd in the U14 boy’s surfing competition.

Two medals, another two top six places and a further three individual finalists at an Australian Titles level from this small group is a very impressive achievement. Thank you for the support the club has shown to these young members throughout the year. It is certainly well appreciated by them and their parents. They’ve well and truly repaid the faith the club has shown in them, with their strong dedication and commitment to their training throughout the season.

On behalf of the Squad and the Club we would like to thank Heath Collie, the Club Coach, for the many years he has put in with these athletes to get them to the standard they are today. Without Heath, this would never have happened. The Club is lucky to have him. Thanks Heath.

We had one of the best years in the Masters section of the club. We took a great crew to Hervey Bay and won the carnival outright out of 14 clubs. This is the first time our club has won this carnival in over 20 years.

Nearly the same crew went and competed at Brunswick Heads. There were clubs from Northern NSW, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. We ran third outright and only 2 points from winning the carnival. This has been the best year surf sports has had in the last 12 years and with the support of the club and members this can only get better.

I would like to thank all the competitors and parents for everything they have done and look forward to next year with bigger hopes!!

IRB REPORT - MEGAN BLINAs we near the middle of winter, most people are enjoying Sunday morning sleep-ins and a hot breakfast but these people are not members of the Kawana Waters IRB Team….for us this is peak season.

The 2018 Season saw the team finish 7th at the Qld State Titles held at Kurrawa on the Gold Coast. Congratulations to our Masters Team, Scott Brydson and Damian Collins who took out 2nd place in their Mass Rescue. As well as Kane Domio and Chris Lowe who won their Masters Surf Rescue. These four also took out 2nd place in their Mens Team Event and Kane and Scott placed 2nd in their Tube Final. Congratulations to our Female Girls Team, Aleeshia Chick, Karlee Bryant and Laura Mitchell who placed 5th in their Female Team Finals.

Unfortunately the team was out of luck for the Australian Titles held down south in Thirroul, with half the competition events cancelled due to dangerous surf conditions. This was an unfortunate end to the season but congratulations to our Masters and Female Teams who both placed 5th in their finals, placing Kawana 15th overall in the Masters Competition and 9th overall in the Opens Competition.

After a disappointing end to the 2018 season the team came back raring to go in 2019 and the results are showing. Our most recent competition at Rainbow Beach has seen the team produce their best overall points score to date, finishing 4th overall. A promising result as we head into the pointy end of the season with States and Aussies just around the corner.

The team has been training hard every weekend in preparation for the Ocean Roar Series and I would like to say ‘Thank You’ to all the parents, partners, friends and kids who have supported us and perhaps become accustomed to a house full of sand and dripping wetsuits. On behalf of the team I would also like to say a massive ‘Thank You’ to all our Sponsors and Supporters who have assisted us in raising the much-needed funds to help pay for the season.

Unfortunately due to the nature of a Volunteer organisation a lot of efforts can go without recognition and while we don’t do it for recognition (although we do enjoy being on the podium) there are a few people who have given so much back to the team and in turn our Surf Club.

Firstly to Ryan Gaylard (or “Rooster” as you know him), Ryan is one of the most knowledgeable people when it comes to IRB racing, he cannot step foot at a carnival without every official knowing his name and his results are some the best the team has seen, frequently placing in the top 3 in all of his events. But aside from competition Ryan is at every training session, mentoring the team and passing on his invaluable knowledge because…. “how you race is how you train.” He also spends many late nights working in the club shed on props and motors to ensure we remain competitive in the water and we really cannot thank you enough.

To Chris Lowe, who never misses a training session but more than that “Chriso” is always there to help, he puts everything into his racing and his results show. Not only as one

of our best Crewies but also as one of the most dedicated and passionate volunteers our team has seen. Chris will often be the first to training and the last to leave, he too spends many hours working on our gear but never underestimates the importance of stopping and chatting over a beer. Thanks for all your hard work Chriso.

Thank you to Michelle Collins. Not only did “Shelly” jump into the hot seat to crew in the Cyclonic Thirroul Swell (placing 5th in her Australian Team Final) following some team injuries, but Shelly gives 120% to everything she does. Her constant enthusiasm, no matter the weather, swell conditions or motors troubles makes her an invaluable member of the team. Whilst she greets

every competitor on the beach with a friendly smile, as soon as she steps foot into the water her raring competitive spirit means she treats every race as if it was the final. Thank you Shelly.Lastly, we would not have a racing team if it weren’t for the trainers, assessors and administrators that ensure that each year we have a new group of Drivers and Crews and are able to keep one of our most valuable rescue crafts on the beach. Therefore a special mention goes out to our long serving IRB team member Kane Domio for giving up so much of his own time to run these training courses. The team is always ready to welcome new members, so if anyone is looking to join an adrenaline filled sport that allows you to travel to some of the best beaches in Australia, please contact us.

It has been a year of ups and downs for the Kawana Waters Surf Life Saving Supporters Club. While it has been an exciting year at the club with the committee trying a number of new things to bring people in the door and a significant push to make the club more attractive to active members, we have had a handful of major

setbacks which has hurt us from a financial perspective.

Before I go any further we sincerely congratulate our Club Manager, Jen Henricks, on the birth of her first child. It has certainly been exciting times for Jen and her family, but also her extended family at the club. With this however, came the understanding that we rely heavily on Jen to keep the club afloat. Although many of the staff members stepped up to fill Jen’s shoes, the period of Jen’s maternity leave was still tough for the club and we fell into a bit of a slump from a management and customer service point of view, and since Jen’s return it has taken a couple of months to get back on track.

We all know the amount of effort David Johnson (Snow for those who don’t know his real name!!) puts into the club as the Treasurer year on year, but I want to sincerely thank Snow for his efforts this year, particularly when Jen was away. Snow spent huge amounts of time at the club and basically took on a management role where he was performance managing the staff and ensuring the club maintained course. I know this was draining on Snow and thank him again.

While there has been a major slump in the hospitably industry, the Club was travelling OK this year, albeit we were below budget and didn’t have the high season kick over Summer that we are used to. April too was a rollercoaster with the joys of good profits throughout the month and on Anzac Day dashed by the large wages bill caused by the way the 5 public holidays fell. The big hit that we took this year was through gaming. An extraordinary number of jackpots have hit the bottom line hard. With jackpot payouts in the order of $70,000 from February to April 2019 it has led to an overall lose for the financial year. Please refer to the Treasurer’s Report for more detail.

It is worth mentioning that again the most exceptional trading day this year was Anzac Day. Despite last year marking the end of the 100-year commemorative

celebrations, this year’s Dawn Service was one of the biggest I’ve seen. Like every year, we held a gun fire breakfast which was well attended and then offered two up in the afternoon. This was the most financially profitable Anzac Day for the Supporters Club with sales exceeding all past records and I thank the staff, the volunteers and the RSL patrons for an excellent day. The partnership between our Club and the Kawana Waters RSL Sub Branch continues to go from strength to strength and the Supporters Club facing tough times just brings the groups closer together.

Another exciting thing to see is the exposure the Club is getting in the business community. Last year we were successful in winning the Best Club Reception award at the Sunshine Coast Bridal Awards, beating out some major clubs and surf clubs on the Coast. We have also recently found out that we are finalists in the 2019 Annual Bridal Industry Awards (ABIA) for best wedding reception venue. This is great exposure and weddings are a great source of function income which will continue to boost the club.

Our exposure has also been boosted by our Council and State political representatives in John Connolly and Jarrod Bleijie where they have both gone to significant lengths to find funding for the club, but also promote the club, our achievements and what we are trying to achieve within the Kawana and Sunshine Coast Chamber of Commerce. This combined with significant interest in sponsorship for the lifesaving side of the club shows the profile we are building in the community.I’d finally like to thank the supporters committee for all their efforts this year and look forward to continuing with largely the same team into next year. As always, thanks to Jen and Rachelle for your efforts around the club.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT - KANE DOMIO


TREASURER’S REPORT DAVID JOHNSONAs Honorary Treasurer, I provide the following commentary in relation to the overall performance

of The Kawana Waters Surf Lifesaving Supporter’s Club Inc. (KWSLSSC) for the fiscal year ended 30/4/2019 as per the attached audited financial reports.

The reported loss for the year is $72,434 after depreciation of $63,537 resulting in serious pressure on the business from December 2018 onwards. This was extended to cash flow and cash resources necessary to meet ongoing operational costs, supplier terms and Statutory Payment obligations as reflected in the Audited Assets and Liabilities Statement. KWSLSSC was also not in a position to donate cash funds to KWSLSC or to reinvest in capital improvements or major initiative’s necessary to attract increased patronage and sales income.

As a consequence, I draw your attention to Note 2. of the Audited Accounts:

“Material Uncertainty Regarding Continuation as a Going Concern. The financial report has been prepared on the basis that the association will continue as a going concern and therefore no adjustments have been made to the recoverability and classification of assets or to the amounts and classification of liabilities that might be necessary if the association did not continue as a going concern. However, certain conditions exist that raise doubt about the association’s ability to continue as a going concern and therefore whether it will realise its assets and settle its liabilities in the normal course of business and at the amounts stated in the financial report. The principal conditions are: -

• The association has incurred a loss of $72,434 for the year ended 30 April 2019

• The association is heavily reliant on the continuation of positive forward trading results

• The association has a poor current ratio position

• The association is having difficulty meeting its financial obligations.

Due to the heavy reliance on Commercial Lease payments from KWSLSSC to Kawana Waters Surf Lifesaving Club Inc. (KWSLSC) of $92,400 p.a., a “Going Concern” commentary is also encompassed in the reports for KWSLSC.

It is imperative and highlighted that, in the months preceding the issuance of the final Audited report, the trading position was at the forefront of discussions and communication between the

Committees and Management of both KWSLSSC and KWSLSC and invited guest Bob Clements, Life Member and past President of both KWSLSC and KWSLSC. This has involved convening of Financial Strategy meetings with representatives of both Committees, Bob Clements and more recently, in communication with both SLSQ Supporters Club Manager, Craig Cooper, to advise of the position and seek guidance where appropriate. Further-more, contact with Clubs Queensland Relationship Operations Specialist, Wayne Moffatt, has been made to provide insights and review of the operations of the Club and feedback. e.g. benchmarking. This review is ongoing and will continue.

PERFORMANCE/FINANCIAL STATEMENT COMMENTARY

Profit and Loss

After add backs for depreciation $63,537, a net loss of $ 8,897 is evident, a deterioration of $60,328 on last year.

Balance Sheet reflects a deficit in Total Members ‘Funds of ($122,937) due to losses incurred. Please refer to attached financial reports for full details and explanatory notes.

Main points to note as a direct result of cash flow impact -cash at bank reduced by $40,219, Statutory Payment liability (BAS and Super) increased $ 28,838 - an impact of $69,057.

PROFIT AND LOSS COMMENTARY

Income

Similar to the majority of Clubs in Queensland, on feedback from a number of sources, income generation in our peak summer trading period simply did not occur. All trading segments reflected a downturn in sales generation due to a number of factors and most notably in Electronic Gaming Machines (EGM). Total sales for the year were $3,050,277 including extra-ordinary income of $27,250 via CUB Vendor Agreement $17,250 and CUB Promotional Funds of $10K. Total sales from trading segments and other income was down $ 108,333 on last year.

Budget versus Actual

Analysis of month on month trading against Budget Forecasts reflects that against a forecast surplus of $67,812 for the year, a net loss of $8,901 was evident, a shortfall of $76,713. Of this total, $89,776 is attributed to January ($27,057) and February ($ 62,719) that was further aggravated by shortfalls against budget totalling $45,564 in March and April. Total shortfall against budget, January to April 2019 $135,340 and only reduced by stronger performance against forecast in the other 8 months of the year.


Bar and Kitchen

Sales turnover between these 2 segments decreased $67,052 with resignation of 1 Head Chef immediately prior to Anzac Day 2018 and a further Head Chef and 1 Duty Manager in February 2019.

The impact on service and casual wages cost leading up to and following the resignations, impact on Gross Profits and final employment payouts all had a detrimental impact on results and is slowly being rectified on recent figures.

Gaming

Revenue from gaming income down $43,567.

It is advised that whist Gaming Turnover increased $379,622 over last year, revenue decreased by

$43,657 as a result of Jackpot payouts totalling $162,861 for the year with $84,000 of this total paid out between February and April 2019. The Return to Player % for the year was 90.93% against 2018 of 88.98%. (Industry Benchmark 92%). This was by far the most significant impact to cash flow and the final result.

Expenditure

All expenditure continued to come under stringent scrutiny and control and a minimalistic approach to non- essential capital expenditure, whilst balancing savings against service levels. In particular is the employment cost of 35 staff with total payroll and superannuation payments of $1, 1,78, 487 or 38.98% of sales an increase of 4.1% on the previous year (noting CPI Increase of 3.5% in July 2018)

The following tables reflect that this strategy was achieved with a drop in overall expenditure of

$43,917 with other expenses outside individual segments reflecting savings of $75,187 of which a reduction in wages in other expenditure of $ 39,177 is, in part, due to a transfer of Bus Driver wages to Bar and reduction in Jen’s wage due to paid parental leave over 18 weeks. The past year has been very challenging and It is with no hesitation that, in the face of declining sales and resultant impact on cash flow, some difficult and at times, robust and challenging discussions have been held and decisions made to minimise expenditure and to look at ways in which increased sales can be generated. My sincere thanks to Jen, Rachelle, my fellow Committee Members and the

Committee of the KWSLSC for embracing these discussions and decisions and for your commitment to the Club as a whole.

In closing, I leave you with a very sobering fact: -

In a recent study commissioned by Clubs Qld, late 2018, KPMG highlighted that in recent years “The Winds of Change” have been blowing in the Community Club Sector with increased cost pressures and stagnant or declining income from traditional sources, gaming, food and beverage and changing consumer preferences. On average 16 Clubs have closed each year since 2009 with a total of 164 community clubs closing in the last 10 years. This is particularly relevant for smaller Clubs with < 50 gaming machines.

It is up to us all, Committee, Management, Active and Social Members to work together to ensure we are sustainable in the future and not become yet another Statistic. This is the challenge that we all, as a proud Surf Community must and will rise to.

Report on the Audit of the Financial Report

Opinion

We have audited the financial report of Kawana Waters Surf Life Saving Supporters Club Inc (the association), which comprises the assets and liabilities statement as at 30 April 2019, the income and expenditure statements for the year then ended, and notes to the financial statements, including a summary of significant accounting policies, and the certification by members of the committee on the annual statements giving a true and fair view of the financial position and performance of the association.

In our opinion, subject to the disclaimer of opinion below, the accompanying financial report presents fairly, in all material respects the financial position of the association as at 30 April 2019 and its financial performance for the year then ended in accordance with the accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial statements and the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act of Queensland 1981.

Basis for Disclaimer of Opinion

Material Uncertainty Regarding Continuation as a Going Concern

Without qualifying our opinion, we draw attention to Note 2 in the financial report which states that there is material uncertainty regarding continuation as a Going Concern.

Basis for Opinion

We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor's Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report section of our report. We are independent of the association in accordance with the ethical requirements of the Accounting Professional and Ethical Standards Board's APES 11 O: Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (The Code) that are relevant to our audit of the financial report in Australia. We have also fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with the Code.

We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion.

Emphasis of Matter - Basis of Accounting

We draw attention to Note 1 to the financial report, which describes the basis of accounting. The financial report has been prepared to assist the association to meet the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act of Queensland 1981. As a result, the financial report may not be suitable for another purpose. Our opinion is not modified in respect of this matter.

Responsibilities of the Committee for the Financial Report

The committee is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in accordance with the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act of Queensland 1981 and for such internal control as the committee determines is necessary to enable the preparation and fair presentation of a financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

In preparing the financial report, the committee is responsible for assessing the association's ability to continue as a going concern, disclosing, as applicable, matters relating to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting unless the committee either intends to liquidate the association or to cease operations, or has no realistic alternative but to do so.

Auditor's Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report

Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial report as a whole is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor's report that includes our opinion.
