ANNUAL REPORTANNUAL REPORT2016 - 20172016 - 2017
As many of you know, this has been a transformative year for our organization. In the winter of 2016, our Board
of Directors along with staff and community partners came together to redefine SEEDS’ purpose and refine our
mission. From these inspiring and extended discussions emerged a new vision for the future.
Throughout our 23-year history, a deep respect for life, the earth, and one other has remained at the heart of
SEEDS. Now, as we look forward, we’re focused on further fostering that respect while growing the potential of
youth in Durham.
At our core, we are striving to develop the capacity of young people to respect life, the earth, and each other
through growing, cooking, and sharing food.
Through our programming, students get hands-on experience growing and cooking their own food, while
developing leadership skills and becoming stewards of the environment. Beginning in elementary school,
our SEEDlings After-School Enrichment program will immerse children in the wonders of the garden and the
tastes of the kitchen throughout the week. As these young leaders grow and transition to middle school, they
will apprentice with and directly learn from our chef and garden educators. In high school, these innovative
students will be poised to take on leadership roles in our community, helping to plan and conduct lessons in the
garden and kitchen, and participating in facilitated discussions on social justice, food justice, and grassroots
community development.
We believe in the power and ability of our youth to grow — mentally, educationally, and socially — into
transformational leaders of tomorrow. And every day, we see first-hand that our beautiful, two-acre oasis in the
heart of Durham is an ideal space to nurture this transformation.
I have had the indescribable pleasure of joining the SEEDS
team during this transition phase. Drawing on my background
in Public Health, my experience running the operations of a
grassroots nonprofit, and my time as a teacher for exceptional
children, I have been working diligently with the SEEDS team to
grow our new curriculum for developing innovative community
leaders with a strong connection to life, the earth, and each
other. The excitement is palpable, and the forward momentum
is strong. I’m thrilled and honored to be at the helm.
We welcome you to stop into SEEDS, wander through our
garden, sharpen your gardening skills, and see the power
of our programs. Be on the lookout for community events,
Saturday workshops and volunteer days, and inspiring
changes coming from our ever-powerful youth.
Humbly and with dedication,
Jeff Howell,
Executive Director

“I saw so many
people, especially kids,
disconnected from
nature and the food we
eat. I knew gardens could
be much more than just
places of beauty; they
could transform personal
lives and communities.
I wanted to change
the public perception
of eating and growing
food.”
- Brenda Brodie,
SEEDS Co-founder
“Thank you, thank you
for the awesome week at
summer camp! Eliza had
a blast and says it's her
favorite camp ever! She was
super excited to prepare
her squash from the garden
for us for dinner tonight,
and insisted that her dad
help her plant some of the
seeds so that she can grow
more. I love seeing her so
passionate!”
- Kat Barbosa,
Eliza’s mom
“We had a great time
volunteering! Please
thank [Garden Assistant]
Liza for being such a
great host, joining us
for great conversation
over lunch, and patiently
describing what were
weeds vs. what were
seeds in the garden.
We enjoyed ourselves...
and we learned a lot!”

WHAT PLANTS CAN YOU IDENTIFY?
WHAT MAKES YOU A GREAT LEADER?
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUTYOUR TEACHERS AT SEEDS?
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP?
WHAT PLANTS CAN YOU IDENTIFY? Strawberry, bell peppers, apple tree, corn, squash, kale,
lettuce and tomatoes.
WHAT MAKES YOU A GREAT LEADER?The other kids listen to me because I listen to them. When
you boss people around they stop listening. Playing with
them is how you get to know them. When you need help,
you say, ‘Hey guys, can you please help me with this?’ And if
they say no, don’t get mad.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUTYOUR TEACHERS AT SEEDS?The teachers don’t yell or boss you here. I have talked to the
teachers when I was mad or sad. Teachers here have helped
me learn things like yoga, sewing, gardening and cooking.
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP?A firefighter or a farmer, maybe both. I would like to help
grow food for homeless people and make the community
better. The community would be better if you know lots of
stuff about growing food so you can help people without food.
Adrian Platt is 10 years old and about to enter the 5th grade.
He and his brother Joshua live near SEEDS and have participated
in our after-school and summer camp programs.
Adrian became interested in gardening from a young age,
when he gardened with his beloved grandma. From the
beginning of his time at SEEDS, it was clear to his teachers
that he was a natural in the garden, as well as a kind,
unassuming leader to those around him. With his quiet and
loving demeanor, he encourages his friends at SEEDS to find
the simple joys in working outside: turning soil, working
safely with tools, sowing seeds, and watching plants grow.
We sat down with Adrian and asked him about his garden
knowledge, leadership skills, and his time at SEEDS.
ADRIAN’S FAVORITESGARDEN PLACES:The Grape Arbor, the
Greenhouse, and the
Chicken Castle.
GARDEN FOOD TO EAT:Dino Kale!
GARDEN ACTIVITIES:Using tools and teaching
others how to use tools
properly. Making friends at
SEEDS’ like Adonis, Marializ
and Heidy. Playing and
running in the garden and
visiting the chickens in the
Chicken Castle.
MEMORY OF SEEDS:The first time I picked up a
chicken (also when I met
my after-school friends).

OUR GARDEN COMMUNITYOUR GARDEN COMMUNITYOur two-acre garden is growing strong, thanks to
the many hands that have tended to it this past
year. Through the seasons, the garden is a constant
lesson, both when things bloom and when things
fail. SEEDS students work in the garden and learn all
about how plants grow, and our volunteers play an
instrumental role in maintaining our beautiful space.
In the interim months before hiring our new garden
manager, the work of our three garden assistants
was invaluable. Lisa Bruckner, who had previously
interned at SEEDS, returned for the summer to
help coordinate and prioritize garden projects.
Dr. Glenda Clare guided volunteer groups on
Wednesdays and Thursdays, and Liza Engstrom led
our Friday and Saturday groups. On any given day,
there are as many as 50 volunteers of all ages in the
garden, and our assistants have always had a task
(and perhaps even a song) for them!
As a Counselor Educator and clinical supervisor with
three clinical licenses, Dr. Glenda Clare is particularly
interested in how garden knowledge and skills can
be used in a therapeutic setting, and when not at
SEEDS, Liza consults with an employee wellness
company in Raleigh, and operates her own laughter
yoga company, Health and Happiness Align (HAHA).
We are grateful for the talent, skills and enthusiasm
they bring with them to the garden each day.
And, of course, none of it would be possible without
our volunteers. Dedicated, individual volunteers
come to SEEDS week after week to lend their sweat
and smiles, and big volunteer groups help us get
big projects done in no time. This year, we want
to thank groups from Bronto/Oracle, Burt’s Bees,
YouthWorks, NCCU, Cisco and Salesforce for their
continued contributions to helping SEEDS grow.

KEITH BRODIEKEITH BRODIE
Durham and the SEEDS community lost a visionary this past
year. Psychiatrist, educator and former president of Duke
University, Keith Brodie passed away in December 2016. Dr.
Brodie’s wife of 49 years, Brenda Brodie, co-founded SEEDS in
1994, and together, Keith and Brenda’s passion for community
service, care for the earth, and boundless compassion have
helped Durham, Duke and SEEDS grow. We are grateful for his
life’s work, leadership, contribution to our community, and his
enduring legacy of empathy for all.
