INTRODUCTION

“I know not how I may seem to others, but to myself I am but a small child wandering upon the

vast shores of knowledge, every now and then finding a small bright pebble to content myself

with”

- Plato

India is a country of villages and major philosophy of people is self production and

self consumption. Though the industrialization and globalization have changed their

philosophy a bit and it is changing day by day, the major part about the role of the

farmer is still confined to the use of traditional methods of farming and procuring.

Reasons for this are endless from illiteracy to small land holdings. But various

government schemes and work had done by other organizations give us a hope to

have a great future of farmers and of India.

India is credited with one of the largest national seed markets in the world.

According to recent estimates, annual sales in Indian seed industry amount to about

Rs. 4000 crore or US $920 million, which include $900 million of domestic sales

and $20 million of international sales. The sale of seeds of field crops alone account

for $ 500 million and the balance is taken by vegetable seeds and other crops. The

total aggregates sales work out to about 4 percent of world trade of $23 billion and

India ranks 8th as far as the domestic seed market is concerned.

Objectives:

To study the perception of Uttarakhand Farmers towards Hybrid paddy seeds.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Sample size:

To represent the population, we have chosen 100 people as a sample of our study.

Sample unit:

We have taken all kinds of people as our sample. Major samples were y middle and

old aged farmers. Diverse group of individuals were interviewed belonging to

different locations, socio-cultural and socio-economical status.

Sampling technique:

We used random sampling techniques because it represents our population best.

Everyday 8,000-10,000 people stepped into farmer’s fair and that is the major

advantage for a student of management especially who is in the field of agribusiness.

Research instrument:

We prepared a self designed questionnaire in which some of the questions were

close ended, however few subjective questions were asked at the time of interview.

Research duration:

Project duration was from October 8th

to 11th

2010. Time duration was from 9 am-6

pm.

RESULTSAND DISCUSSIONS

1. Land holding Patterns of farmers:

During survey it was found that more farmers were belongs to large & medium

landholding pattern and marginal & small landholding farmers were very few.

2. Percentage of farmers using Hybrid & OP varieties:

During our survey it was found that major medium, small and marginal farmers were

using OP varieties and very few large farmers were using Hybrid varieties. Most of

the farmers quoted that in case of Hybrid varieties bending paddy crop is more in

pre-harvesting stage due to the over weight of pods.

Most the farmers except large farmers said that if they adopt cultivating Hybrid.

Varieties they have to purchase new seeds on every year. But in case of OP varieties

some part of yield can be used as sowing material for next season.

4).Farmer preference criteria while choosing paddy varieties:

During survey it was found that compared to large farmers small farmers are

investing less amount of money on farming so they are very much price sensitive

when it comes to afford hybrid varieties so they are preferring OP varieties which

are very much less in cost.

Moreover large farmers are concentrating on productivity. Hybrid varieties are more

susceptible to diseases than OP varieties. Large farmers are cultivating Hybrid

varieties despite of occurrence of diseases and cost.they are giving more priority to

productivity. The rice of Hybrid varieties not much taste as compared to rice OP

RECOMMENDATIONS

On the basis of study it was found that very few farmers of this region were

using ‘Hybrid paddy varieties’ seeds.

1) Farmers awareness programs regarding usage of hybrid varieties should be

increse.

2) Most of the small farmers are concerning about the cost factor, they suggested

that if govt provide subsidies on seeds than willing to cultivate hybrid varieties.

3) During the survey we found that farmers quoted hybrid varieties are more

susceptable to diseases than OP varieties.Comapny should contrate to produce

Hybrid varties with very good disease resisistance varieties than farmers may

prefer the hybrid varieties.

4) Demonstrations about the usage of hybrid varieties & sampling field experiments

can solve the misconceptions of farmers about hybrid varieties.

5) In some regions dealers do not have hybrid seeds stock. So company should

establish closest stock points of hybrid varieties to the farmers. Than availabilty

to farmers is much easy.
