Annual Report 2011

A United Way Member Agency

Creating Brighter Futures

Protecting children is becoming more of a visible issue each day. As we listen to the news and read the

newspaper, not a day goes by that we don’t hear a sad story regarding the life of a child.

At Family Services, we’ve seen many of these stories first hand. The good news is, there is help available for

the families and children involved. Here, they can find hope and guidance to help them overcome even the

most challenging circumstances. For example:

Cara was 23 years old and unemployed when she gave birth to a baby girl. She had come from an

unstable home and admitted that she had no idea how to take care of a baby. When our staff first met her,

Cara rarely left her house. She could not identify one person she felt she could call in an emergency or

just for support when she needed it. Since her involvement with Family Services, Cara began job

coaching and now works part-time. She continues to meet weekly with her Family Support Worker to

learn how to interact, nurture and care for her baby.

When a mother discovered her nine-year-old daughter had been sexually abused, she was referred to

Willow Tree Child Advocacy Center for assistance and support. Willow Tree staff provided a thorough

medical exam and worked with the police and law enforcement to hold the offender accountable.

Counseling and advocacy services were provided to help them deal with the trauma and make sure the

family was safe and protected.

Family Services is committed to protecting these and many other children, and strengthening their families

through ongoing advocacy and support services. Preventing child abuse and neglect of children is not a

mystery. We know it takes a stable home, parents that are knowledgeable about how to care for children, and strong family support

systems. All of these can be achieved through early intervention with high risk families. The long-term benefits to the children and

society are easily demonstrated. But it takes a community committed to make this happen.

We are fortunate that we live in communities that have recognized the benefits of helping these families. We appreciate the

opportunity to serve our children, their families, and community by offering services that contribute to healthy families. Thank you

for your support of Family Services and helping us make our communities and families stronger.

Willow Tree Grand

OpeningA series of events were held the

week of January 9, 2011 to

celebrate the grand opening of

Willow Tree Cornerstone Child

Advocacy Center in downtown

Green Bay. Special events honored

top donors and contributors. A

ribbon cutting ceremony was held

prior to several open houses for

donors, special guests, and the community at large. A number of public

officials and community agencies attended to voice their support and

enthusiasm about the opening of the new center, which helps to ease trauma

for children who have experienced abuse. In its first year of operation,

Willow Tree served and cared for 248 children.

Packers Alumni Featured at the 2011 Green & Gold GalaThe 23rd Annual Green & Gold Gala, held at the Lambeau Field Atrium on

September 29, 2011, raised record-setting proceeds of $111,000 for the child

and youth programs of Family Services. More than 450 guests joined us at

the event for a festive evening that included more than 20 Packer greats -

Willie Davis, Johnnie Gray, Lynn Dickey, and Frank Winters, to name a few.

Guests also enjoyed fine dining, a silent and live auction, and raffle contests.

A brief program featured the work and mission of Family Services, while

also honoring the Green Bay Packers and the Community Partnership

for Children for their contributions to kids and families in our communities.

We extend a big thank you all of our sponsors, donors, organizers and

attendees for making the 2011 Green & Gold Gala our best one yet.

Record-Setting Year at the Blue Ribbon EventA sellout crowd of more than 500 guests joined us at the 15th annual

Blue Ribbon Event on April 8, 2011 at the Oshkosh Convention Center.

The event is held each April in honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month,

to benefit Parent Connection’s early childhood education services.

The highlight of the evening was the

4th annual “Dancing for Little Stars”

competition, where 11 pairs and five

groups of ‘local celebrities’ competed

in a friendly dance competition to raise

money for child abuse prevention.

With the generous support of our

dancers, sponsors, donors and guests,

the event raised record proceeds of

$56,500. Thank you to all who

supported and/or attended this fun

community event, making a difference

in the lives of many local families.

Thingamajigger House

PresentationA group of 2011 Leadership

Green Bay class participants spent

several months planning, building,

and decorating a Dr. Seuss-style

playhouse for the kids of Healthy

Families. Through their hard work

and some donations from area

businesses, the playhouse, dubbed

the “Thingamajigger House”, was

completed and presented to Family

Services on June 16, 2011. The house

was built behind the Healthy Families

facility on Riverside Drive in Green Bay, providing a fun playtime activity

for all kids participating in the program.

Butterfly Festival Draws Crowd of 800Perfect weather helped draw a crowd of 800 guests for the 3rd Annual

Butterfly Festival on June 18, 2011 at City Park in Appleton. Parents and

their children joined us for a morning of games and family fun activities,

with all proceeds benefiting the Parent Connection program. The highlight

of the event was a group butterfly release representing Parent Connection’s

dedication to “Helping Families Fly.”

With the generous support of our guests, sponsors and other

contributors, the 2011 Butterfly Festival raised nearly $17,000 for child

abuse prevention services in the Fox Cities area.

Solar Energy Projects Save Natural ResourcesThrough a partnership with WPS and Focus on Energy, as well as

several small grants, Family Services was able to install a solar-electric

power system at our two largest facilities - Crooks Street in downtown

Green Bay and the Billie Kress Center for Youth Development, located

on Spirit Way in Ashwaubenon.

A 16.56 kW system was

completed at the Billie Kress

Center in August 2011, saving an

estimated $10,000 a year in

operating costs. A return on

investment is expected in the next

few years, while also allowing us to

become more self-sufficient for our

electrical energy needs.

The installation of a 37.7 kW

system was completed at

Crooks Street in October,

estimated to save an additional $16,000 in operating costs. The cost of the

system will be made up in energy savings within five years.

At the end of 2011, after just a few months of operation, the systems had

generated 14.75 MWh of energy, producing a carbon offset of 10.4 tons.

This is the equivalent of planting 260 trees or saving emissions from 1,050

gallons of gas.

While saving thousands of dollars each month in energy costs, we are also

proud to be contributing to offsetting the global carbon footprint, saving our

natural resources and helping to create a cleaner environment for all.

Record Year for the Cellcom Green Bay MarathonOn August 9, a press conference was held at the CP Center in Green Bay to

announce the funds raised at the 12th annual Cellcom Green Bay Marathon,

held on May 14-15, 2011.

The event raised record proceeds of $129,183, which were split between the

event’s three charity partners: Family Services, the CP Center, and Junior

Achievement. Through direct proceeds from the event as well as the

marathon’s “Run for a Reason” program, Family Services received just over

$42,000 to support our services to children and families in need.

Child

Advocacy

Center Earns

Beautification

AwardThe Willow Tree

Child Advocacy

Center was honored

on November 9,

2011 at the 42nd

Annual

Beautification

Awards, held in

downtown Green

Bay. The site

received an award for the category of “Exterior Design - Small Buildings,”

presented by Mayor Jim Schmitt.

Each year, the ceremony honors local businesses for their efforts in

improving the city, making it a better place to live and inspiring others to do

likewise. We are proud to be a recipient of this award and recognized for our

contributions toward a “Cleaner and More Beautiful Green Bay.”
