  • With the conclusion of the 2012-13 fiscal year, Molloy made a decision to return to its “red roots” by using

cerise as our primary color in all of our marketing efforts. Cerise is reminiscent of the College’s original color,

American Beauty Rose, and pays tribute to Molloy’s rich history, which continues to influence us every day.

s I reflect on the 2012-2013 academic year, I think of the inspired efforts of our distinguished faculty and talented staff, and the many accomplishments we have achieved by working together. Most of all, though, I think of our students.

Our students self-select Molloy because they want to be a part of our culture where students not only learn but grow. At Molloy, we expect our students to not just be involved but to be involved so they can become agents of transformation. Whether working as part of a team or being placed in situations where they are uncomfortable, our students gain an understanding that they have a responsibility to help other individuals grow and develop. We do this by providing the necessary tools they will need to accomplish this goal through our outstanding academic programs and robust campus life.

Now a residential campus, Molloy’s student life consists of many clubs and sports teams as well as opportunities within our global learning and campus ministries programs. Community service reaches beyond our local Midnight Runs into Manhattan and relief efforts for those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Our volunteer efforts also include rebuilding New Orleans, working with the disenfranchised in the Lakota Nation in South Dakota and the annual Appalachia Project in Kermit, West Virginia. In addition our study abroad program also offers students the opportunity to meet people from various backgrounds and locales while discovering that they have much more in common with others than they would have anticipated.

The value of these interactions, greatly contribute to the overall college experience at Molloy and extends beyond graduation. I am proud of our reputation and look forward to witnessing the many exciting things our students have yet to accomplish.

  • SANDyStarting the Semester with

The year began, as most do, with Molloy’s students (including a record number of freshmen) becoming acclimated to their new schedules, connecting with friends and focusing on their course work. But just before Halloween, with the develop-ment of a now infamous storm named Sandy, it quickly became clear that this semester would

    be far from typical.

In the early hours of October 29, 2012, Sandy, a post-tropical cyclone, made landfall near

Atlantic City, New Jersey. The storm brought with it a devastating tidal surge and hurricane

force wind gusts that battered the entire Northeastern coastline of the United States.

Although the Molloy campus was spared serious damage, the surrounding areas were

especially hard hit, leaving many residents struggling to simply meet their basic needs. People

were without power or heat, gas lines were often hours long, roads were covered with downed

trees and debris, thousands of cars were lost and the homes of many community members

were left severely damaged or uninhabitable.

Molloy’s residence hall had been evacuated in advance of Sandy and the campus re-

mained closed for ten days in the wake of the storm. However, in demonstration of true

Molloy spirit, our community managed to respond almost immediately to help those adverse-

    ly affected by the storm.

supplies in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.

    7

  • STEPS UPMolloy

The College leadership team met as soon as the severity of the storm’s impact became evident. They immediately established the Molloy College Disaster Relief Fund, which was designed to help individuals affected by Sandy. Donations to the fund were matched, dollar-for-dollar, by Molloy “non-tuition” funds.

The College helped secure alternate living arrangements for students, faculty members

and employees who had lost their homes. The leadership team worked quickly to approve a

new catastrophic leave policy. The Molloy website was used as a community resource and was

updated remotely with information on relief resources, and our counseling resources were

made available to provide emergency support.

One of the most uplifting experiences in the aftermath of the storm was observing the

Molloy students in action. There were countless opportunities for them to help. Students

were involved in the cleanup, rebuilding, and fundraising efforts. A clothing, food, and supply

drive was started almost immediately. Volunteers from Molloy’s baseball team, softball team

and campus ministries helped to empty homes of damaged belongings and cleaned homes

filled with mud, water and sand, and prepared buildings for reconstruction.

Each facet of our community found unique ways of assisting people affected by Sandy.

Members of the Molloy chapter of the National Speech-Language Hearing Association

distributed much needed hygienic supplies. The Education Club sponsored a school supply

drive to aid local schools whose teaching tools were destroyed. Music Department faculty

performed in a benefit concert. And Molloy students from the Division of Nursing, who had

    8

  • recently studied disaster shelter management, put into practice what they learned when they

volunteered to work in local shelters.

It was a difficult time for so many Molloy family members, but luckily our deep sense of

community and strong spirituality helped make the experience a bit easier for them. We were

proud of our students and the enthusiasm for helping others that they exhibited in the wake

of the storm. They truly rose to meet the challenges in front of them and contributed tire-

lessly to the much needed healing of our region.

Molloy students work to rebuild communities

    devastated by Superstorm Sandy.

    9

  • LIFECampus

With the experience of Superstorm Sandy behind us, we continued to move forward with the transformation of our Rockville Centre campus. We began renovations on Maria Regina Hall, with the original convent now being con-verted into a second student residence hall set to open for the fall of 2014.

As we continue to attract students from outside of the traditional commuter range, having

the availability of housing for students has added another dimension to our already vibrant

campus life. The new facility will add approximately 90 beds to the 173 already available in

Fitzgerald Hall, which opened in 2011. Campus life remains central to the Molloy College

experience, and having students living on campus has enabled us to increase our exciting of-

    ferings.

Our campus is always buzzing with activities. The Molloy Performing Arts Club staged

productions of both Rent and Grease, offering student members the opportunity to chan-

nel their theatrical talents. On June 16th we held our second annual Bloomsday celebration,

which paid tribute to author James Joyce’s work Ulysses. The Madison Theatre even spon-

sored a summer movie-on-the-lawn series showing well-known films like Ghostbusters and

    Jurassic Park.

The students also enjoyed many social events on campus. The traditional welcome back

BBQ with large inflatable slides, grilled food and a DJ was - once again - very successful.

There were intramural dodge ball games, Zumba classes and yoga sessions. Favorite activities

like the student fashion show, the Mr. Molloy competition and the opportunity to ‘stuff-a-

    10

  • bear’ were once again popular draws. New this year was a unique roller skating night, where a

portable rink was installed in our campus parking lot and students were provided with skates.

Molloy Athletics had an exciting year as they proudly unveiled the College’s new soft-

ball field located within the Skelos Athletic Complex just a short distance from campus. The

state-of-the-art softball facility includes a turf outfield, lights for nighttime play, easy access

to bullpens and a double batting cage. And in 2013 Molloy’s Softball team claimed the NCAA

Division II East Region title for the second time in the last four seasons, becoming one of eight

teams in the country to earn a spot in the College World Series.

Lady Lions attend the ribbon cutting for the

    new softball field.

    11

  • Community and

Molloy students continued to embrace the many opportunities we provide for community service. Old traditions continued, like our annual BoxTown event to raise awareness about homelessness, Molloy’s trip to the Big Laurel Learn-ing Center in Appalachia to help disadvantaged children, and the St. Baldrick’s fundraiser to

aid those with childhood cancer. Frequent blood drives were held on campus and we once

again hosted a ‘Safe Halloween’ event for local children. Additionally, new efforts started

on campus and instantly gained support, like the Relay-for-Life, the Hunger Banquet and a

    Toys-for-Tots toy drive.

This year many students participated in our annual September Concert, offering their tal-

ents to the community as we came together to remember the tragic events of September 11,

2001. This year a special addition to our usual concert was the dedication of a piece of steel

that was salvaged from the wreckage of the Twin Towers. The steel is permanently mounted

outside of the Public Square building and is surrounded by benches and greenery, offering a

quiet and contemplative location on campus.

  • wAllSbeyond the Classroom

Service Learning trips continued to offer students unique ways to spend their school breaks. Mol-loy students once again went back to New Orleans to continue the rebuilding efforts that have been so desperately needed since that area was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Yet another contingent of students and community members traveled out to the Lakota Nation in South Dakota to provide much

    needed assistance on the reservation.

Our International Education Department continued to offer amazing opportunities for Molloy’s students

to travel abroad. These carefully planned excursions, which included trips to Germany and Italy, marry

classroom education with real-world learning and discovery. New this year was an opportunity for students

from the Division of Business to participate in PRIME Networking’s Annual Euroweek Conference in Riga,

Latvia. The students had an opportunity to participate on an international team and present their findings

    during the conference.

This year’s Joe and Peggy Maher Forum brought Andrew Ross Sorkin, co-host of CNBC’s Squawk

Box, reporter for The New York Times, and author of Too Big to Fail: The Inside Story of How Wall Street and

Washington Fought to Save the Financial System – and Themselves, to campus. Mr. Sorkin discussed the quickly

approaching fiscal cliff and its potential effects on the U.S. economy and answered questions from the capac-

ity crowd that was largely comprised of students from the Division of Business.

Our annual St. Thomas Aquinas Lecture is part of the College’s mission to celebrate the Catholic intel-

lectual tradition in all its diversity. This year’s featured speaker was S. Elizabeth Johnson, C.S.J., Ph.D.,

Distinguished Professor of Theology, Fordham University. Her well-received presentation, titled "Christ

and the Pelican Chick," discussed the question of suffering in nature.

Molloy College was proud to host the 11th Annual Dominican College “Preach-

ing in Action” Conference. This was the first time the College hosted the

event. Attendees from 12 colleges/universities around the country utilized our

facilities, including the residence hall, as their homebase for an exciting week of activities.

Our students along with other participants targeted diverse groups through their preaching

efforts and enjoyed many faith-based seminars and events.

The Rebecca Center for Music Therapy at Molloy College was the only school in the

United States selected to participate in an international research study. The study is spon-

sored by the Grieg Academy for Music Therapy Research Centre, Uni Health, Uni Research

and will investigate the effectiveness of music therapy for children with autism spectrum dis-

orders. The international collaboration includes eight countries worldwide: Australia, Austria,

Brazil, Denmark, Israel, Korea Norway and the United States. The study also gives Molloy

students the opportunity to learn from the on-going study and work closely with participants.

We have received approval for a new course of study - our New Media ma-jor, which will be offered through the Communications Department. The Department’s television studio has been updated with additional classroom space and new computers in anticipation of the new program.

The College also received approval to offer a bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Care. The

program previously offered only an associate’s degree option. We are thrilled about our new

options and very pleased to offer them to our students.

During Molloy’s 2013 Commencement ceremony the College granted 1,041 degrees and

    advanced certificates: 744 bachelor’s degrees, 248 master’s degrees, 43 associate's degrees and

six advanced certificates. The commencement speaker was Molloy alumna S. Mary Hughes,

O.P., Prioress of the Sisters of St. Dominic, ’68, who stressed the importance of service and

study, and encouraged graduates to search for truth. Of note was the fact that the Division of

Nursing graduated its largest class in College history.

    campus television studio.

    19

  • fUTURElooking Toward the

With enrollment having grown to approximately 4,500 students, an increase of 80 percent over the last decade, and institutional space increasing only 18 percent during the same timeframe, it has become clear that the College must add more teaching and learning space to the campus footprint. Therefore, we recently un-

veiled plans to build a new $24 million academic building on the campus.

Molloy on the Move – a Capital Campaign began in June of 2013. The campaign was

started to generate the funding needed to construct a new academic building to become the

primary home to the Division of Nursing. The campaign has already been the beneficiary

of the largest alumni donation in College history, and we will be holding many fundraising

events in the near future to help fund the new project.

As always, we are grateful for the continued support of our alumni and friends. It is

through their support of time, talent and treasure that we are able to continue to grow our

rich academic offerings and dynamic campus life. Through their generosity and concern, we

are able to educate, prepare and transform our students into steadfast pillars of their commu-

nities who will make a difference every day of their lives.
