Annual Report

July 1, 2010 - June 30, 2011

A Message From Our Executive Director

Dear Friends and Supporters:

Fiscal year 2011 was quite a year! New Generation has experi-

enced many changes, including hiring a new Executive Director (I

was hired in October 2010 for this role) as well as a new Thrift

Store Division Manager, Jennifer Murphy Aubin, hired in June of

2011. We relocated our Rochester Thrift Store to 88 Hancock

Street, welcomed new board members and said good bye to others.

And although change is inevitable and often challenging, the con-

stant that remains is the work that we do, and the reason we’re here.

In the past year we served a total of 21 women and 14 babies, the highest number since opening.

Since 1987, New Generation has served over 386 women and 256 babies.

Our typical resident is a pregnant woman between 20 and 30 years old with limited education, no job

or income, a history of mental health or substance abuse, and/or a history of domestic abuse. Often

when these women come to our door, they have received little or no prenatal care, and are unaware of

available resources that they can turn to for help, such as WIC, housing authorities, and state and local

financial and medical programs. Most women who come to us have an unstable relationship with their

families, and do not have many (or any) natural supports in their lives.

When these women come to our shelter, they come to more than a bed to sleep in and healthy food to

eat. They receive nurturing, support, and education from our highly qualified and trained staff, and

they develop enduring friendships and support from each other. They participate in volunteerism,

“family-style” meals nightly, and engage in recreational activities. Each woman gets the one-on-one

attention that they deserve.

I am proud to be associated with this organization, and I am grateful to have your support to help us

fulfill our mission year in and year out. It has been a challenging year, but I am 100% positive that our

agency will be able to weather these turbulent times, to ensure we continue to provide a safe haven for

homeless pregnant women and newly parenting women and their babies.

Thank you all so very much for your support,

New Generation provides shelter and food for

up to seven women and their babies at a time.

Women need only be homeless and pregnant

or parenting a newborn to be eligible for our

services.

Every woman at New Generation agrees to

participate in parenting education. Mothers

are given pre and post tests to measure

changes in parenting attitudes.

Each woman receives individual case manage-

ment, including referrals to outside agencies,

help finding employment or signing up for

schooling, and help accessing benefits.

Staff provide formal and informal education

directly or by offering in-house workshops

from community experts on cooking, nutri-

tion, household maintenance, and money

management.

Each woman and child is provided with trans-

portation to access health-care appointments,

work, school, and other resources in the com-

munity.

Transitional Apartment New Generation also has a two-bedroom tran-

sitional apartment for independent transi-

tional living for women and their children for

up to 18 months.

Aftercare Services Aftercare services are provided by interns,

volunteers, and staff to former residents in the

form of transportation, case management,

and general support.
