Message from the Board President

The Co-op has achieved some amazing progress and successes this year! This Annual

Report is meant to serve as an update to member-owners on what our volunteers have

been up to and a thank you for your continued dedication and partnership toward opening

a store in Montavilla! Thank you for your continued support! As you’ll read throughout this

report, it takes a lot of work from many dedicated volunteers and supporters to hit the mile-

stones we have hit so far.

About MFC

We are a volunteer-led effort to build a full-service, community-owned retail grocery store

serving Montavilla and surrounding neighborhoods. To become a member-owner, house-

holds make a lifetime investment of $150. The investment can be paid all at once, or in

installments over a one-year period. While everyone will be welcome to shop at the co-op,

member-owners may receive special perks, like coupons or discount days. Member-

owners are also entitled to collectively make important decisions about the store, including

electing the board of directors. Member-owners also share in the profits of the store

through a patronage dividend system.

Who We Are

Member Owners are the lifeblood of the effort to build a co-op in Montavilla. More than 600

individuals and households have invested in their community through Member Owner-

ships! An elected, volunteer Board governs all aspects of our organization with support

from our dedicated volunteers. We are proud of our strong connections with the Montavil-

la East Tabor Business Association, the Montavilla Farmer's Market, the local Neigh-

borhood Associations and many other businesses and community organizations. We

look forward to building connections with many more community organizations as we grow

and expand our reach into the community. We want our co-op to reflect the values and

diversity of the Montavilla community!

Successful Events

Our current strategic goal is attracting new Member

Owners to reach our goals for signing a lease. We hit

a major milestone this year when we welcomed our

600th Member Owner! This means our next milestone

will begin our lease negotiations, and we'd like to

thank our volunteers who made this outreach possi-

ble. Without volunteers like you, we wouldn't be hav-

ing the conversations needed to facilitate new Mem-

ber Owners taking the plunge to join in support of our

community. Without naming each of the dozens of

events from this year, we'd like to give thanks to both

those who helped at recurring events like our Pan-

cake Breakfast, the Street Fair, the Farmer's Markets,

METBA First Fridays, and those who helped at our

special events like the Gateway Green Park Opening,

the Rose Parade Bridge March, and our MFC Sign

Bomb.

Contracting with Experts

While we are proud of that we are a volunteer-led

organization, we also recognize the need for profes-

sional support and advice. As we get ever closer to

opening a store, our need for professional, dedicated

help from grocery and cooperative industry experts

increases. One of the most exciting things we did this

year was to hire our Project Manager, who has im-

proved our volunteer management, member-owner

outreach, and event planning.

Additionally, we have supplemented volunteer ef-

forts, we contracted with local and national experts for

services including

Updating our market feasibility study

Strategic planning to support volunteers

Building detailed financial projections

Providing IT and database support

The co-op's current cash position is strong and we

have sufficient funds to support continuing our mem-

ber-owner recruitment and organizational develop-

ment efforts. We have been able to maintain a

strong cash position due to several grant awards

from national partners, which have paid for, among

other things, our market study and pro forma finan-

cial consultants.

We are also supported by uncounted, yet financially

significant contributions from our members and busi-

ness community who have provided event/meeting

space, items for raffle or sale, food, event support,

and more. A big thank-you to all our community part-

ners and supports for your help!

As we celebrate the amazing successes of 2016-

17, we also look ahead to 2017-18. Our #1 goal for

next year is to continue growing our Member

Ownership so that we can reach our next milestone

and begin negotiating our lease! MFC will also be

focusing on the next stages of cooperative develop-

ment, which will help us move from planning for

site selection to the implementation thereof. The fo-

cus will be on building capital and completing the site

selection process. To do that, MFC will begin plan-

ning for:

A member loan campaign;

A capital campaign; and

Determining site criteria/completing site analysis.

MFC’s first Member Owners signed up at the

1st Annual Pancake Breakfast in June of 2011. Those

41 early adopters established the founda-

tion that we have been building on ever since.

While we know plenty of work remains ahead, we are

very proud of our progress. While there are many

variables included in the feasibility of opening the

doors, Member Ownership is one of the most im-

portant! With how far we've come, we know we can

reach our goals if you help us get there together in

Cooperation!

The best way to get us to a store quickly is to recruit

more member-owners. Encourage your friends

to join, wear MFC swag, engage through social

media, host a potluck or house party, put up one of

our yard signs and get involved in events to bring us

that much closer to opening a store!

Message from the Board The Board of Directors for 2016-2017 is very pleased with the progress we made this year. We serve not only a govern-

ance role for the co-op, ensuring the member-owner investments are responsibly held and spent and that the co-op is

moving forward in its strategic goals, but also as administrators of a volunteer-led organization. And we know we would

not have seen the successes we did without our fabulous volunteers. Thank you for all that you do. For 2017-2018, we

will be focused on filling open board positions so that we can continue our success and leadership in the years to come!
