2014

Opening Message

It was 2014 an important year for Museo del Acero horno3. It is a moment of analysis through the consolidation of the financial sustainability and a new stage of our educational programs. It is a time to go back and think about the first 7 years of the life of horno3 in order to plan towards the future without losing sight of our origins.

The conservation of the old structure of Horno Alto No. 3 represents a great challenge, the permanent conservation works are quite complex and expensive, the total area to cover increases to 50,000 square meters. Currently, due to a significant donation given by the World Monuments Fund and American Express, we have been working in the coating application of more than 4,200 square meters, to ensure the protection and conservation of the structure for future generations; this is one of our most important commitments since the moment of starting with this amazing project. With that is accomplished one of the three fundamental themes in which we have decided to focus our educational efforts, the heritage education.

Something in which we focus in this Museum is about Science Education, our second theme. We have been working for some years with children and teachers diploma from Secretaria de Educacion from Nuevo Leon State. Also, school visits and some different programs such as “Science in your city” or “Science under the stars”, among others. In 2015, exhibition and education offers related to basic sciences will grow due to two important additions: the lab called “A window to the Science”, that will be possible thanks to a contribution from CONACYT. The other achievement in 2014 has been the approval of the Expenditure Budget of the Federation due to our great expansion project and that will be designed with the same level and detail than the original spaces from the year in 2006.

The third theme is about Education based in Sustainability, in this area, we have had important accomplishments like the development of demonstrations with this field, for example, the installation of a green wall and some interactives located in the Green Zone from the Steel Gallery. With the inauguration of the Earth House, we strengthen the programs that cover this field, and promote the strategies that as Institution we are implementing since the construction of this Museum. Related to this point, in our daily operations we make an effort to ensure a responsible consumption of electricity, drinking water and natural gas, as well as the recycling of some products like steel, glass, cardboard and aluminum.

Heritage, Science and Sustainability, three themes for the training of future generations that we hope to be a change agent to develop our dear country.

• The Company Fundidora Monterrey Iron & Steel was legally constituted on May 5, 1900 with an initial capital of 10 million pesos.

• It worked mainly in the production of iron and steel items, being the turning point to the industrial development of our country.

• The company was made up of three blast furnaces and the departments of rolled steel, foundry, machinery, screws and rivets, structures and transportation.

• After operating for 86 years, Fundidora closed its doors on May 9, 1986.

• Sometime later, the federal government granted the state government of Nuevo Leon the 130 hectares of land occupied by Fundidora, with the purpose of creating a green space where also develop museums and theme parks, as well as a Business Center.

• In the year 1988, Fideicomiso Parque Fundidora was created.

Encouraged by factors such as the mining legislation, the construction of railway lines, the regional capital, the existence of ore deposits, a policy of industrial promotion and political and social stability from the years 1890 and 1900, emerges in the north of Mexico the beginning of the steel industry in the country and in Latin America.

Before “La Fundidora”, as it was known, there were other companies, but none of them constituted an integrated steel industry. It was Vicente Ferrara, of Italian descent, who with the support of his partners Leon Signoret, Eugenio Kelly, Antonio Basagoiti and many other people from Monterrey, consolidated the idea of creating an integrated steel company that would respond to the great demand for imported beams, bridge structures, rods and other different materials for construction.

Horno Alto No. 3 was designed by Arthur G. Mckee

& Co. from Cleveland, Ohio. The installation began

in October of 1965 and it began operating on

January of 1968. It had the production capacity

from 1,500 to 2,000 tons of pig iron daily and the

most advanced technology. With the beginning

of operations of Horno Alto No. 3, Fundidora

Monterrey reached a production of pig iron of

around 1,000 million tons, with that number of

production it became the most important steel

industry. After the closure of the Company

Fundidora Monterrey Iron & Steel and with 20

years without use nor maintenance, on October

2005 the restoration works of the structure of

Horno Alto No. 3 were started, this in order to

transform it in what it is today: a World Class

was much damaged, that it was even dangerous.

In March, 2006, after the most intense restoration

phase, it was started the construction of new

elements that would complement the Horno

Alto No. 3 spaces. The design of this Museum

was entrusted to well-known national and

international firms and consultants, directed by

Museo del Acero, A. C., through a compact group

of Mexican professionals, in charge of planning

and directing the project, who also worked

as a liaison between the Board of Directors,

the Building and Architecture Committee, the

Technical Committee and the History Committee.

horno3 was inaugurated on August 16, 2007 and in the first months of operation; it received more than 80 thousand visitors, in the framework of the Universal Forum of Cultures in 2007.

Steel Gallery

Visitors live a total interactive experience, following the process of steel production. There is much to explore there: since getting on an elevator that will take you 200 meters under the Earth to a coalmine, or explode an opencast iron mine. In addition, you can enjoy live science demonstrations performed in the Scientific Nucleus.

horno3 is more than a Museum, it is an Interactive Science and Technology Center, which throughout wonderful steel processes, promotes scientific and technologic education for kids and teenagers. It has five great experiences to transport the visitor in times when Fundidora was operating, as well as to know all different steps in the steel production.

The Furnace Show. The Awakening of the “Sleeping Giant” In this magnificent show, visitors experiment the sensation of being in a blast furnace in operation. All this through special effects and testimonies of former workers of the Old Fundidora. Through a brief documentary, it is explained how the furnace worked in the past and what it meant for those employees to work so close to this gigantic Horno Alto No. 3.

Earth House, Planet ObservatoryThis wonderful place where the visitor live a face-to-face encounter with the Planet and the Universe, contemplating a great illuminated sphere through geosynchronous satellites from NASA and marine buoys from NOAA that allow visualize weather phenomenon, ocean currents, and other amazing topics. Located in the dust collector of the Horno Alto No. 3, Earth House is a space created in collaboration with Gruma and the Climate Institute for our visitors.

The Summit Stroll. The best view of the City of the MountainsA wonderful journey where you go up more than 40 meters through a crop elevator and you will enjoy a panoramic view of the city, as well as to know the old machines that composed those structures.

Since its design and constructions throughout its history, horno3 has received many different local, national and international awards and acknowledgements, which place it as a recognized and committed association with the society, as well as a pioneer and innovative Institution about topics of Science and Technology. Some of the

• The American Institute of Architecture, Prize in honor to Excellence in Architectural Design.

• XVI Pan-American Biennial Architecture from Quito- BAQ, 2008. Ecological Mention in the category of Architectural Design and biennial Honorable Mention in the category of Heritage Intervention.

• XVII Building Award CEMEX, 1st Place in Sustainable Building and 1st Place in Congruence in Accessibility. Awarded in November 2008.

• Artistic National Monument. horno3 was declared by the National Institute of Fine Arts and ratified in the “Diario Oficial de la Federacion” on November 9, 2009.

• Design of the year. horno3 logo won the Quorum Prize that is granted by the Design of Mexico Council, A.C.

It is a program sponsored by the Secretary of Social Development of the State of Nuevo Leon, in which we are looking for bringing free all families and people from Community Centers closer to horno3.

That program is held the first Thursday of every month.

horno3, as a promoter of disseminating science to all society, carries out different activities in a unique and fun way.

This is a program that consists of a free family activity in which they are projected some science documentaries in the area of Explanada

The science bulletins are an important tool for the dissemination of the science and technology by the use of e-mail and our website.

horno3 collaborates in different magazines with publications related to scientific topics, this in order to generate diffusion from different ways and to place it as a science disseminator in a great scale. Some of the magazines are AIST (Association for Iron and Steel Technology Mexico) and CAINTRA Nuevo Leon.

In those spots are explained some topics of everyday science and are broadcasted by Televisa Monterrey, all Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 6:30 and 7:00 a. m. during the TV News.

horno3 as promoter of science and technology, it is making constant efforts to bring teenagers closer to those important areas for the development to our country. From 2012, horno3 has participated in different robotic tournaments launched by the international organization FIRST.

It is a pleasure to share that, in 2014, the robotic team Iron Lion formed by 17 teenagers from different educational centers, accomplished an important participation in the regional competition held in Distrito Federal and got a pass to the international competition. In that competition, Iron Lion received two very important prizes: “Rookie All Star”, because it was the best rookie team in the implementation of FIRST to inspire students to learn more about science and technology. The second prize was the “Inspiration Award”, recognized by the success in respect and appreciation of engineering in its place and in the community.

Professional Practice and Social Service Besides the fact that horno3 is a place of recreation for the society, it offers to the students from different universities and high schools, a motivating place to make their social service or professional practice.

The ones who make professional practice support in areas such as Fund Raising, Workshops, Diplomas, Visitor Center and Management.

Sustainability

horno3 is an institution committed with the concern and conservation of the environment and for that, we make different friendly and sustainable processes and activities.Green terrace or Green roofThis is an area of 600 square meters that serve as the roof of the Steel Gallery and gives important aspects of heat insulation in all of the surrounding surfaces of the building.

Ventilation systemhorno3 building is a pioneer in Mexico about implementation of sustainability through an innovative air conditioner system

Sustainabilityby displacement, injecting cold air by the floor, cooling only the places where it is necessary and avoid cooling in higher zones, saving a great quantity of energy in this way.RecyclingIn horno3 we make different actions and activities aimed at the climate change and sustainability, such as glass recycling, coming from events and daily activities from the Restaurant “El Lingote”. During 2014, there were recycled 15 tons of glass. In addition, we participate in other activities, like paper, pet bottles and cooking oil.

Crystalshorno3 has two types of crystals that are in the building, that help with the conservation of energy and from the fact that they do not spend too much air conditioner; one of them is called “duo vent” that are two pieces of 9 mm each one and separated with 12 mm of argon gas, that avoids that solar rays permeate totally in the building. In addition, the crystal that is in the exterior part of horno3

that is called “low-e” that does not allow that solar rays pass through.

LouversThey are the steel pieces that cover mainly all the casting house, and they are separated 40 cm from the wall of the building that is made of panels that contain insulating isocyanurate. The function of those louvers is to prevent that heat penetrates in the building, creating an air cushion between the louvers and the wall, allowing precisely that air circulation helps with temperature.

Solar Panels

Since May, 2014 in horno3 they were placed some solar panels in the roof of the Restaurant “El Lingote”, and their main function is to generate electricity through photovoltaic solar energy. Those panels have benefited mainly in the Restaurant “El Lingote”, because they provide electricity to the interior and exterior lighting. Since that time, we have achieved reducing in an 80% the use of electricity from the Restaurant, placing us as an Institution committed to environment.

PET Bottle Green wall

Located in the exterior of horno3, this green wall is elaborated with PET bottles to promote the reusing of materials and sowing of plants from the region. In that way, horno3 is working with environmental education with kids and teenagers.

Achievements and the most significant activities

Achievements and the most significant activities in 2014 Over those 7 years of operation in horno3, we have been doing different activities to position that place as an icon of the city and as a touristic reference point and considered national and international heritage.

Earth House, Planet ObservatoryIn 2014, horno3 increased its educational offer to the field of environmental science and sustainability, when inaugurating on June 5th, the Earth House, Planet Observatory, a unique space that operates in collaboration with the Climate Institute, NASA and NOAA and was sponsored by the company GRUMA.

In the Earth House, visitors from horno3 contemplate an illuminated sphere, visualizing as much in real time as historic, weather phenomenon, ocean currents, mountain formations and many other aspects from our planet. All that by the approach of the importance and the impact that climate change has in our lives and in the planet, through different explanations given by guides trained in this field.

The information that is projected every day is received from geosynchronous satellites from NASA and marine buoys from NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), thanks to which Earth House offers to the visitors more than 500 programs with different educational content, aimed to different levels in the field of climate change. The Earth House has the capacity of receiving 100 persons in every presentation. There are some presentations at different schedules during the day.

World Monuments Fund

The inclusion of Horno Alto No. 3 in the Watch List 2014 from the World Monuments Fund (WMF) was one of the most important moments in 2013. Thanks to that recognition, it has reached a better position and it is a good practice reference in the conservation of Industrial Heritage.

WMF invites to the sites listed to celebrate in a special day with the community with the intention of promotion and make the site public. This celebration is known as Watch Day! It was carried out in August 2014 and it was a moment to celebrate the seventh Anniversary of the Museum. All day we had a series of activities with the objective that community be part of the care and the knowledge of its heritage. horno3 celebrated with more of 2,736 visitors that free could enjoy different workshops, special tours, some anniversary cake and a surprise show at the end.

That day also was announced that horno3 received a donation of $150,000 USD from the World Monuments Fund and American Express. Those resources are used in two important projects: 80% is used in the works of conservation of the main structure of the Horno Alto No. 3, and the rest in a signposting project with the purpose of travelers that come to Monterrey can arrive to the place in an easy way, helping also to promote the existence of a unique site of industrial archeology from our state.

Additionally, in the past month of October, WMF invited its members and friends from horno3 to a presentation session in its offices in the city of New York, with the objective of promoting the history, the offer and the challenges of conservation that horno3 has.

Heritage Day in Nuevo Leon By Heritage Department from Tecnologico de Monterrey’s initiative, it was celebrated the first Edition of the Heritage Day in Nuevo Leon, invitation in which we join 40 public and private institutions, universities, associations, foundations and some cultural organizations.

This first edition was celebrated on March 9, 2014 and benefited to 18,400 persons with more than 180 activities offered by the participant organizations. Because of the success obtained in that event, the State Congress authorized that the 2nd Sunday of every March will be considered as the Heritage Day in Nuevo Leon.

horno3 participated in an open house to the community and offered a series of special tours in which visitors could understand the challenges the Horno Alto No. 3 faced in the recovering and transformation process to Museo del Acero.

This year it will be carried out the second Edition and the objective of that initiative is that people from Nuevo Leon have a day in which celebrate, recognize and live their heritage.

Blue Monument Challenge In 2014 and for the 3rd year consecutive, horno3 joined to the efforts and initiatives done around the world to commemorate World Diabetes Day (the most important awareness campaign in the world about diabetes). That was thanks to the invitation of some students from the Faculty of Medicine from UANL, which belong to SCOPH, a permanent committee of public health and is part of the IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students). The Blue Monument Challenge consists of inviting buildings and emblematic monuments from all world to be illuminated in blue color, with the objective that society be conscious about that disease.

Revenue income horno3 is a non-profit organization and its sources of funding come from different activities that are done in a joint effort to make that this Institution be as what it is today: an Interactive Science and Technology Center. The main objective is to bring Science and Technology closer to the society groups and to encourage children and teenagers to be interested in scientific and technologic fields.
