“A manufacturing plant’s success can be judged by its profit and loss statement. The desirability of each process or change is measured realistically by its effect upon that statement. The university’s success is measured by its results in the training of youth and in the discovery of truth.”

& MISSIONLETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

OUR MISSIONWe create world-class experiences for everyone to engage in diverse arts and events within a progressive landmark of IU.

Doug Booher

As we embark on our 75th anniversary season as the leading performing arts organization in South Central Indiana, IU Auditorium continues to set industry standards in terms of quality, leadership, innovation, and guest satisfaction. IU Auditorium exists to create opportunities for Indiana University students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the local community to experience and interact with the performing arts and beyond.

Throughout 2014–2015, we continued to raise the bar and exceed expectations. We expanded our educational offerings, provided even more pre-professional opportunities for students, as well as presented an incredible array of world-class performances—including the Bloomington premiere of the Broadway hit Jersey Boys, the captivating Pilobolus Dance Theatre, and a hilarious appearance by Jay Leno. Overall, we hosted over 140,000 patrons at events in the past year alone.

It is because of the support we receive from our patrons, sponsors, donors, and IU that we continue to thrive year after year. As we look into the future, we are excited to continue to use our unique position and set of specialized skills to enhance the IU experience and enrich the lives of all whom IU touches.

Thank you for another fantastic season and we look forward to seeing you in 2015–2016!

At IU Auditorium, we are committed to furthering the student experience. In addition to providing IU Bloomington students deep ticket discounts to our season shows, we also provide meaningful educational programming that connects students with our visiting artists, and continue to maintain a robust core of student employees, interns, and volunteers. The Auditorium is a learning laboratory where students gain pre-professional training as volunteer ushers, customer service representatives, box office clerks, marketing interns, guest services managers, and more. At IU Auditorium, students come together in an environment of inclusion that both prepares them for the future and helps a big university feel like home.

During the 2014–2015 season, our student workforce included:

ENGAGEMENTSTUDENT

Mentoring

Our staff is an educational resource for students university-wide. This year we assisted Arts Administration master’s students in promoting the Singing Hoosiers Spring Concert, worked alongside Zeta Tau Alpha to present Big Man On Campus, advised the Asian Student Association for Taste of Asia, and mentored students from Union Board as they marketed and presented multiple Union Board lectures and events—including the Welcome Week and Little 500 concerts (which combined hosted nearly 10,000 students).

CAST AND CREW INTERACTIONS:

Throughout the 2014–2015 season, IU Auditorium sought to serve as an educational resource for students and embrace the overarching strategic plan of IU. Along with imparting hands-on venue management experience in a context that enriches the student campus experience1, 2, 3 we provided five scholarships that enabled students from all walks of life to further engage in their academic pursuits at IU4. In the coming year, we are pleased to expand these opportunties further with the addition of graduate assistantship positions—made possible though a collaboration with the Arts Administration program of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

Whether students are assisting patrons, providing administrative support, or experiencing our historic venue for the first time, we are proud to represent the university and support our mutual goals through diverse avenues of student participation5.

ENRICHMENTCOMMUNITY

IU Auditorium provides a direct connection between the residents of South Central Indiana and Indiana University. We are proud to be the face of IU to the thousands of community members who enter our doors each season. IU Auditorium is deepening this relationship through our many and varied outreach initiatives and educational programs.

Community Outreach Initiatives 2014–2015

For nearly every performance, we provided supplemental educational programming—additions that enrich the IU Auditorium experience and connect the community more deeply with our artists, our venue, and Indiana University.

Educational Programming

A program which just began in 2013, “Give The Magic” grew and evolved this year to provide more underserved members of our community access to the Auditorium and our programming. One of the most successful was a partnership between ourselves, a generous donor, and Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County, which gave Habitat families the chance to witness The Peking Acrobats performance as complimentary guests of the Auditorium.

Give the Magic

In December, in conjunction with B97 Radio/WHCC and for the performance of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the IU Auditorium lobby was filled with free, holiday-themed family-friendly activities. Kids of all ages participated in a snowball toss, built their own Misfit Toys, visited Rudolph’s Antler Station, got their pictures taken with the Bumble, and more—providing children with opportunities to express themselves artistically and engage in creative play.

Kids Night on Broadway

In 2014–2015, IU Auditorium partnered with various community organizations to collect donations. We conducted a food drive with proceeds going to the Hoosier Hills Food Bank and sponsored a toy collection in partnership with Toys for Tots. In addition, we provided no-cost tickets to 87 different organizations, supporting their community service endeavors.

FORWARDLOOKING

As one of Bloomington’s largest cultural institutions, we value the relationships we maintain with the community found within and outside of the university. As our mission states, we create world class experiences for everyone to engage in diverse arts and events1. To fully participate as an arm of this great university, it is imperative that we continue to engage the wider Bloomington community and its permanent residents. To this end, we provided more than 20 free educational events and programs throughout the 2014–2015 season to connect the public with our artists and other touring professionals. Featuring esteemed professors and alumni such as Dr. Glenn Gass, Dr. Brandon Barker, Robert Affe, J.D., Ryan Ahlwardt, and Dennis James, our pre- and post-show lectures make some of the university’s greatest assets directly available to the community2. In an effort to further connect Bloomington residents with the arts and strengthen our international programming efforts, IU Auditorium entered into a partnership with the Lotus World Music and Arts Festival to present The Taiko Drummers at their 2014 festival performance. Additionally, to promote the wellness of our immediate community we collaborated with a variety of local organizations to provide tickets, facilitate donation initiatives, and improve the overall accessibility of our programs3.

FORWARDLOOKING

With staff members in key volunteer roles of leadership with the International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM) as well as serving as adjunct faculty through the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA), our professional team is well equipped to adequately represent IU’s culture of excellence. By continually adhering to the highest of industry standards in venue management, it is our goal to ensure that staff, students, and patrons alike have a memorable and safe experience in our historic facility1.

In addition to cultivating a diverse and experienced team of professionals internally, IU Auditorium strives to enhance the growing diversity found within the Bloomington campus. During our 2014–2015 season, we were proud to help to facilitate some of IU’s largest cultural events and host artists that bring the world to our stage—like The Cleveland Orchestra, Pilobolus, The Peking Acrobats, and Rosanne Cash. We look forward to continuing our support of the university’s position as a global ambassador2,3.

Other Engagements

Alongside our scheduled season events, we were pleased to host a number of additional events during 2014–2015. These events allow students and community members to present their own events at IU Auditorium, broaden the number of perspectives we are able to add to the public conversation, and further our position as the community’s gathering place. In additional to the ticketed events below, we also hosted two enormously successful free events: Union Board’s lecture by Laverne Cox, and the degree conferral ceremony for Kevin Kline.

IU Auditorium recognizes and values the legacy we have inherited and those we are creating for future generations to carry on. It is only through the steadfast support of Indiana University, the generosity of our sponsors and donors, the

dedication of our staff, and the loyalty of our patrons that we continue to tell and preserve the story of the Auditorium.

We look forward to serving you in the seasons to come.
