Police Rew[tr(l mia Suptra'l!lIuation Funds. The total !l1l101111t paid for pensions and gratuities during the year was £2D,868 6s. 3d. The

inco me being insll~i~ient to meet the claims, a SHut of £l0,000 was voted to cover the balance, which will be adequate -to meet all present requiremel1t~.

Dui'ing the year fourteen police pensioners died, who were 111 receipt of pensions aggregating £2,288 lOs. 11('1' annum.

'l'he following members of the Police Force Iml'e been superannuated on pensions aggregating £ 1,720 16s. 3d., and others over 60 years of age will be similarly provided for in the neur future:-

'rhe advance Jigures taken as usual from the station watch-house records in the Metropolitan District show un increase of 1,68G apprehensions as compared with the previous year :-

An increase of 1£11 is recorded for brenchcs of the" Betting Houses Suppressio n Act," and or H2 fo, vagrancy, 2GB for sim ple larceny, and 133 for stenling in company. There was al so an increase of: 10 in the number of prosecutions lor breaches of the Trame By-laws.'

The Superintendent of the Metropolitan Diijlrict vielVs t.J-:ese fi gures as satisfactory, th ere being an increase in the number of arrests for the moro sc rious offence3, and a decrea se in thnt class of crime. Forty-two pel' centulll of property stolen is r eportcc\ as recovereu, There bus been U decreaso in the number oE li cense(l public-homes for the past twenty yenr~, but SlInday selling still prevails to a great extent, and is likely to do so in Bpite of all efforts until t,hOl'e is an amendment in the htlV.

Throughout the Stato there has lIot been n marked increase oj' decrease of erime raported. There '\' as;\I\ increaso of a in the llulllbel' of murtlers, and II decrease of 1 in case~ of attempted murde r, and 2 of infanticide. 'fhere was also 0. decrcase oE G in the nUI11 ber of rapes and nttempts, and an iucrease of 2 in criminal assanlts on young girls, and of 4 ill indecent ns~aults 011 women; also un increnso of 0 in cases of arson, and 15 in the number of burglaries, &c., re ported. _ There were 0 more prisoners discharged on ticket·of-Iem-e than during 1901, and 7G more undcr the" First OiIenders' Act."

'L'he number of persons reported missing wns 797 (incl uding 83 inquiries from Great Britain and the variou!l provinces of the Empire, and 121 inquiries from foreign countries), I1S against 688 in 1901, whilst the number traced was 450 as compared with 356.

'J'be Metropolitan 'Licensing Inspector nlso drl1ws attention to the red uction in the number of licensed houses, n otwithstanding the 'increl1se in the population. l!'onr hotels were closet! during the year in consequence of beiug old and dihl,pidnted. 405 sl1111ples of liquor and wine were taken during the year from publicans and wine and spirit merchants. No adulterants injurious to health were found in the spirits, but in 75 samples the liquor was excessively diluted with water, for which prosecutions were instituted. Some of the samples of eolonial wines were found to be of an inferior q oality and adulterated.

It has also been extremely trying •• he police in the dronght-striekell districtE'. where the cost of necessaries has been greatly enhanced, u~ing hardship to the men , who hn\"e founel it di(Jiwlt to maintain them~elves and their fnmilies.
