Inside this issue:
Dear Caring Friends,
“Compassionate, Aware, Responsive, Intuitive, Neighbors, Giving” support through prayers,
volunteerism, donations of goods, services and monetary contributions. This acronym for
CARING describes the support network that continually and faithfully comes from a cross
section of the community for Lake Wales Care Center. It lets us know that our message of
“neighbor helping neighbor” speaks to many caring hearts. From Care Center board, staff
and those whose lives have been touched, “Thank you.”
The support groups of churches, businesses, organizations, families and individuals are a
very important part of the work that goes on through Care Center. Our regular newsletters
are one way we endeavor to keep the community informed. In this 2016 Annual Report
you will find our financial report and interesting facts on how many of our neighbors were
served last year as well as the number of volunteers and hours that came together to make
it happen.
Care Center is able to reach out to many people because you have learned about us,
become involved and, in turn, trusted us with your support. We look forward to our
continued partnership as we strive to stay responsive to community needs.
With CARE,
Care Center Board

Weikert
Care Center held its First Annual
Clay Shoot at the FFA Training
Center in Haines City on
Saturday, March 19. The event
was sponsored by Vic Story and The Story Companies.
Participants arrived, registered and received instructions early
morning. After enjoying coffee and juice, they headed to the
different stations to begin the morning of Competition. As
teams finished, the dining hall became the next target, where
everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch sponsored by Weikert
Ford. The scores were announced and each shooter received a
prize for being part of this new
awareness/fund raising event.
A very hearty “thank you” to the
fifteen registered teams that scored
high and raised upwards of $13,000 to benefit the programs
and the people served by Lake Wales Care Center.
April 2nd Care Center hosted the Sixth Annual Run Like You
Care 5K & 10K run/walk event with over 165 participants.
Individuals, families and groups enjoyed a beautiful spring
morning and helped raise awareness and funds for the Meals
on Wheels program of Care Center.
Since 1988, Care Center has been the coordinator for the
Meals on Wheels program in Lake Wales. Through this
program, elderly and shut-ins are provided a hot,
well-balanced noon meal each weekday.
The 24th Annual Golf Tournament sponsored by Publix Super Markets
Charities took place in November at Lake Wales Country Club. One
hundred fifty golfers lined up either for the 8:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m.
shotgun start.
At the end of the day, golfers regrouped at the Lake Wales Country
Club to enjoy a delicious dinner. Each golfer received a prize that had
been generously provided by hundreds of hole sponsors and
businesses.
A special thank you to our tournament sponsor, event sponsors, hole
sponsors and golfers who helped
raise $38,000 during the Annual
Golf Tournament. These funds go
toward programs offered through
Care Center to better serve those
less fortunate in the Lake Wales
community.
24th ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT
11th ANNUAL EMPTY BOWLS
Matthew 25:35… “I was hungry…
In an effort to raise awareness of hunger in our town, Care Center invited the community to
participate in a national program entitled EMPTY BOWLS.
“Empty Bowls” is a program to fight hunger and is personalized by artists on a community
level. This program was designed to heighten awareness of hunger in the world and in our
own towns. Each community’s events are self-developed and independent.
Many celebrities from the community were invited to paint a bowl. The bowls, painted by
clergy, business owners, teachers, city officials and artists, were sold at auction during the
SOUPer Bowl Event in January 2017 held at the First Presbyterian Church.
The $7,000 raised from this event was used to further the hunger relief programs offered
through Care Center including: Meals On Wheels-hot meals delivered week days to the
elderly and shut-in, Food Pantry-for families struggling to meet the basic needs, Holiday
Food Baskets-for families receiving holiday assistance, and Community Kitchen-Sunday meal
for families and individuals. ...and you gave me something to eat.”

Care Center Volunteers - PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE
Volunteers are vital to the operations of Lake Wales Care Center. Our community is blessed to
have such caring people; people who are willing to Visit, Organize, Listen, Undertake, Nurture,
Teach, Encourage, Enrich, Reassure, Serve. VOLUNTEERS!
Each year, we are astounded at the number of people who are willing to give of their time to
help us in our mission. Volunteers help us with everything from home repairs, delivering food,
organizing and displaying donated items in the thrift stores, assisting in the office,
wrapping gifts, packing food boxes, picking up donations, tutoring, mentoring youth, serving
meals, sponsoring families, evangelism and home visits, just to name a few. We consider our
volunteers local missionaries as they serve their community.

Matthew 25:36 “I was sick…. Aging affects everyone. Many times as people get older it becomes difficult to complete certain
tasks such as cooking a meal. Individuals may be recovering from surgery and are temporarily unable to prepare a meal for
themselves. This is where Meals on Wheels may be beneficial.
Participants in this program receive more than a warm meal; volunteers offer a warm smile and a caring word to the recipient in
the program. The meals are prepared daily by the Lake Wales Medical Center with specialized entrees for the dietary needs of
individuals. There are no income limitations and the sliding scale fee is available for those who may need financial assistance.
Matthew 25:36 ...and you visited me.”
Each year Care Center assists families with
short-term financial assistance and tangible
resources such as food, clothing, and
furniture.
Many times through the interview process,
Case Managers develop a “Care Plan” with
the client. This may include opportunities for
clients to attend life skill classes, receive
personalized budgeting assistance,
participate in support groups, be guided with
employment searches, and be spiritually
nourished in addition to helping with their
basic needs. Care Center seeks to assist
clients in finding a long term solution, not just
meeting the short term need.
On an annual basis Care Center will provide
nearly $200,000 of short-term cash
assistance utilizing and coordinating funding
from Salvation Army, Federal Emergency
Food and Shelter Program, Duke Energy Good
Neighbor Fund and resources from our own
budget through community donations.

Since 1985, Care Center has served as an inn for the good
Samaritans of Lake Wales. We were established because of the
vision of the local churches. Over the years it has been our
strong relationship with the local churches that has helped hold
us accountable to our Core Values. Because of this strong
relationship, Care Center has worked to be a leader in providing
relevant programs to meet the identified needs within our
community.
Through the Transitional Housing Program, families are provided
the opportunity to live in a safe, nurturing environment during a
time of transition in their lives. Acceptance into the program is by
application and personal interview. Those accepted must abide by
rules of conduct and progress toward goals which include
improving skills in financial management, family dynamics, spiritual
development and more.
Every October, volunteers, community members, and staff begin the
preparations to help hundreds of local families have a Happy
Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas. We are continually amazed at the
generosity of the community, giving of their time and resources to
make sure others can have a special holiday season.
This year, over 45,000 pounds of food were graciously donated, which
provided Thanksgiving and Christmas meals and helped restock the
food pantry of Care Center for the new year. In just a few short weeks,
we collected over 5,700 gifts and were able to make Christmas a little
merrier for 764 children.
When a family applies for holiday assistance, they are given the
opportunity to say “thank you” to the community who has blessed
them by performing volunteer service at various churches, schools and
community organizations, as well as attending a Holiday Life Skills class
where they learned basic life skills and how to celebrate the holidays
on a budget. In this way, they were able to say they were the ones that
helped provide Christmas for their family.

I’ve been a good boy this year?’ My heart broke knowing I would
not be able to give him the Christmas he deserved. But then
someone told me about Care Center and I was able to go pick out

Comment by previous participant:
The program helped make life comfortable for us and you get to
learn from others in the program during the gatherings, group
sessions and work. You have a chance to make new relationships
and you gain a new family. It allows opportunities to hear other's
struggles and their achievements which brings you encouragement.
A current participant shared:
I have the opportunity to learn how to deal with my emotions and
change my perspective so I can persevere through my struggles. My
faith in God is in control helping me manage my anger, frustrations,
anxiety, depression and sobriety. Through the program I have been
able to learn to live sober and build self-confidence.

“Destiny” came to Choices in early 2016. She was scared, quiet, and
shocked to be pregnant at 17. She came by recently for a visit to let us
meet her daughter, Ynitsed. The scared,
quiet teen has turned into a proud and
beaming mother. She and her baby's father
are engaged and planning a wedding with
the encouragement of their local church.
Clients who obtained an abortion after receiving
services at Choices: 0
Choices Pregnancy Care (CPC) understands that a woman concerned
about an unplanned pregnancy may face some of the most difficult
decisions she will ever make. CPC specializes in helping women get the
information they need so they can make those decisions with confi-
dence. Choices does not perform or refer for abortion. Whether a
women is considering abortion, adoption, or parenting, we can help
them get the facts and resources you need to make an informed deci-
sion.
During 2016, of the 38 clients who were seen, 29 tested positive for
pregnancy. Twenty-four were abortion vulnerable meaning they had
certain risk factors that would make them statistically more likely to
choose abortion. While the other five were abortion minded;
meaning they were actively seeking an abortion. The following are two
lives that were changed after seeking assistance at Choices.
Individual Testimonies:
"Alice" came to Choices in December 2015 for a pregnancy test. She
was distraught over the positive results. Although she was a single
mother to a four year old son and despite the difficulties of her
situation, she knew abortion was not an option for her. Alice was the
first client who received an ultrasound at our clinic. We saw a healthy
baby at 9 weeks gestation with a strong heartbeat. On August 5, 2016
she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl! At the start of this year, Alice
came by to visit Choices to let us meet her beautiful daughter. She and
the father of her baby were married and are happily expecting another
child! This happy family of four will soon be a family of five. It was such
a blessing to see the changes Alice has made and to witness her in a
happier and better place than she was one year ago.

ENTERPRISE PROGRAMS - Customers 166,171
One of Care Center’s four core values is ensuring good stewardship of community
resources. Care Center’s first priority is making donated items available to meet the
needs of families seeking help with furniture, clothing and other household needs
through a case management plan. Enterprise Programs provide varied marketing
venues to make surplus donated items available to the public not only at the 2 thrift
stores but through online sales.
The funds generated by the sale of surplus items are placed into Care Center’s budget
and used to provide assistance to those families or individuals who are less fortunate.
201 N Scenic Highway Lake Wales
Phone 863-678-0245
The stores offer much more than just a place to shop. People who are looking for a
place to serve and help others, find their skills to be of great benefit at the stores. With
the hundreds of items each day that come in, many helping hands are needed to keep
donations sorted, tagged and made available for shoppers.
The customers and volunteers bring with them caring and sharing attitudes. A prime
example is a special lady who picks up yarn every time she visits the store. Her mission
is to make lap blankets; she then returns them to the store to be sold and the funds
from the sales are put back into the
programs. Pick-up of good, usable larger items
such as furniture and appliances may
be arranged by calling the main
office weekdays at 863-676-6678.

STAY-AT-HOME-WORK CAMP/WORK PROJECTS 316 Campers - 70 Projects Completed
"#LoveYourSelfie – Love who God created you to be” was the theme for the 31st
Annual Work Camps based on Psalms 139.
Every year, hundreds of teens gather to help local homeowners with repairs they are
physically or financially unable to complete on their own. Not only do the
homeowners benefit from this program, but the campers do as well. Campers learn
valuable tangible skills like painting and roofing, but also learn to work as a team on
group projects. Besides working, campers participate in worship, games, and other
activities.

THANKSLIVING CAMP - 200 Participants
Unlike the labor orientated projects of Stay-at-Home Work Camp,
ThanksLiving Camp focuses more on relational service in the community.
Campers spend two days of their Thanksgiving break helping others; they
deliver Thanksgiving foodbaskets to local families, spend time doing crafts
at nursing homes or retirement communities, set up our “Caring Trees” at
local businesses, host Backyard Bible Clubs, visit with Meals on Wheels
recipients, and other random acts of kindness throughout the community.
Campers are able to see first hand the result of serving their neighbor and,
in turn, learn to love a little more like Jesus.

A middle school camper...“This was
my first work camp and I LOVED
it!!! I can’t wait to come back every
year and bring my friends. It’s hot
and hard work, but knowing I’m
doing it for Jesus makes it all
worthwhile.”

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY The Youth Coffee House located at 205 E. Park Avenue offers youth a
safe gathering place to enjoy an evening out including Friday Coffee
House. During any given Friday night you will find the adult leaders
interacting with and offering encouragement to the young guests.
Students enjoy just being teenagers through playing games and
socializing while having adults there to show them they are loved.
Our desire is to be able to share Christ’s love and be an encourage-
ment to them.
With this growing ministry comes a great need for a strong Christian
influence from adults who love and have a heart to work with and
mentor this special group of youth.
If you feel called to mentor young
students, please contact Care Center
at 863-676-6678.

CARE CORPS
For many years Care Center has hosted college social work
students as interns in our various programs. We have also
hosted young adults looking for an extensive 3-6 month learning
experience as they continue to explore how God might use
them for lifelong Christian service. Some students have come
between their high school and college experience.
NonNon--Academic InternshipsAcademic Internships
Participants have the opportunity to develop their career goals
in fields such as social work, ministry, youth outreach, facility
management and many other areas.
∗ Intended for young people recently graduated from high
school, attending college, or recently graduated.
∗ Or non-college bound young adults who desire practical
social ministry experience.
Academic InternshipsAcademic Internships
Academic internships are available for a wide variety of majors,
including but not limited to: social work (MSWs on staff),
marketing, business, community development, non-profit
management and more.
Academic interns will receive supervised training in a clinical
setting involving individual, group and couples counseling,
intake and crisis interventions.
h.e.a.r.t. - HUNGER EDUCATION AND RESOURCE TRAINING
We are continuing to develop “Care Corps” as an experience
giving young adults practical hands on activities as well as
spiritual growth opportunities.
Currently potential candidates are being interviewed for the
summer Care Corps program.

WORSHIP
Roosevelt Academy and Care Center have partnered for 23
years providing OJT (On the Job Training) for 100’s of students.
The program offered at Roosevelt allows students to gain job
experience while being
enrolled in high school.
As students learn job skills to
prepare them for future
employment, they are also
developing friendships and
relationships with the
volunteers and staff who are
training and working with
them. This is a win, win
partnership for the
students, volunteers and
the community.
ROOSEVELT - OJT STUDENTS–25 Students
Above are OJT students: Left to
right: Chris, Kevin, Carlton and
front row Dallas. Care Center partners with several organizations and agencies to
educate and provide service opportunities for their program
participants. One of these groups are students attending the
Missionary Training Institute, h.e.a.r.t. (Hunger Education and
Resource Training) located on the campus of Warner University.
Each semester these students spend a week learning
community based ministry through Care Center.
Students receive hands-on experience as they join staff and
volunteers to assist in meeting the needs of our community by
delivering meals to shut-ins and elderly, helping with holiday
preparation, working at the thrift stores, assisting Circle of
Friends and much more.
Above the h.e.a.r.t. students pictured with the Circle of Friends students work along side each other as they share what they do and make new friends during h.e.a.r.t. Urban
Week in Lake Wales. Page 15
Comments from a Care Corps intern…
“ One of my favorite things was working with the other volunteers and
learning what they do on a daily basis. I’ve seen how they really care
about others.”
