iKhaya le Themba – The Home of Hope
We long for a world where every child has hope and a
future and the effects of poverty, trauma and HIV&AIDS are
no longer seen.
Annual Report 2016
In the heart of Imizamo Yethu, an informal settlement on
the outskirts of Hout Bay, lies Ikhaya Le Themba, home of
hope. Imizamo Yethu is only 18 hectares in size, but is home to
over 33 600 individuals. Imizamo Yethu is poverty stricken and
ridden with HIV&AIDS, unemployment, trauma and hardships.
Ikhaya Le Themba was
established in 2004 to help eliminate some of these hardships.
Today, 12 years later, Ikhaya is still doing that and much more.
Ikhaya Le Themba provides a holistic approach to assist the
students and families in Imizamo Yethu.
We run a full-time after school care for orphaned and
vulnerable children in grades 1 through 6. We provide assistance
with homework, provide a hot lunch (which is often the children’s biggest meal for that day) and
overall create a safe environment where children can expand their knowledge base and skills
through structured programs.

Be the change you wish to see in the world, partner with us and make a direct impact in a child’s life. Empower orphaned and vulnerable children with education support, nutrition, well being;
help them break the cycle of poverty and build hope for the future.
iKhaya le Themba is a registered non-profit organisation
founded in 2004 in Hout Bay. We provide holistic care,
educational and family support to orphaned and vulnerable
children in Imizamo Yethu as they face the effects of poverty,
HIV&AIDS, trauma and learning difficulties. We are an
intensive after school care facility providing structured
programs in a safe and stimulating environment for students in
grades 1-6.
Embraced and supported by the community, 70% of iKhaya
staff live in Imizamo Yethu providing holistic support and care
for more than 130 children and their guardians daily.
Partnering with other community groups and local NGOs in
Hout Bay, Ikhaya offers counselling, therapy and workshops for
adults along with an intensive after school care program for
grades 1-6. Recently a youth development program for
grades 7-12 was launched. An early childhood development
training model has been established to train mothers in the
community to care for children ages 0-6.
Training classes begin in January 2017.

Our mission is to look after the children’s
educational needs and their overall well-
being. We do this by providing lessons in life
skills, therapy groups as well as opportunities
for fun and play such as creative arts and
quarterly fieldtrips outside the township.
At iKhaya we believe in order to help the
child we need to help the whole family and
this ultimately helps the whole community.
Our community workers thus support family
units through home visits, advocacy and
support groups.
Skills development: Parents receive
parenting and skills training such as Word
Works, English and computer literacy. There
are also classes for baking, sewing and
gardening with worker readiness training and CV writing courses as well.
70% of our staff lives in Imizamo Yethu, 70% is African and 40% is currently
furthering their education as aspiring teachers, social workers and community
developers.

Directors Report 2016
Ikhaya welcomed 98 children to the Home of Hope in January, 2016. The first
MANCO board meeting of the year was held March 31, 2016 and the
parents’ meeting also was held in March. Sylvia Simelane led the parents
meeting which was well attended, particularly from the new
parents of the grade one students.
One Sky Project, hang glider and paraglider pilots visited from
the U.S. alongside television producers from the Amazing Race.
The production company- Here’s Why is producing a
documentary about iKhaya. The pilots were keen to take the
kids flying but instead the children were able to suit up for the
hang glider and paraglider but no take-offs occurred due to windy
conditions. Brian and Marc taught the kids lessons on how flight works. The
documentary from Here’s Why consists of interviews with students, parents
and teachers and we look forward to receiving it. Ikhaya kids also became
pen pals or YouTube pals with some kids from
Detroit, Michigan and they have exchanged
videos.
Ikhaya welcomed a new intern from Switzerland,
Maike Trenner , who committed six months of her
gap year and has been an incredible help to all!
The children gave her a great send off today and we welcomed her as a
new ambassador for iKhaya in Europe. We know the relationship with Maike
and her family will continue to grow and we look forward to seeing her
progress in her studies and beyond. One of Maike’s
favorite projects has been working with the youth on their
magazine – IKASI LIFESTYLE! Grade 6 started the year off
right with a hike and sleepover on top of Table Mountain!
Thanks to a grant from the National Lottery Commission, IKhaya launched a
bread baking initiative with parents and a few graduates from iKhaya;
namely Sihle, Lihle and Azola. The bread was quite popular with the
community and the young men passionately served iKhaya, assisting with
homework helps and in the kitchen and bakery as needed.
In Term 2 Mhinti Pato launched the Youth Leadership
Academy for Ikhaya students in grades 7, 8 &9. Thirty kids
meet three days a week in the container. They are
practicing keyboard skills, receive tutoring for subjects
where kids are struggling; the youth group takes place on
Saturday mornings. Christian Hiking Network invites the kids along regularly for
hikes and all are keen to go! We look forward to Mhinti taking this to the next
level in Term 3 with Maths and Sport. The classes are full and I’m sure there will
Annual Report 2016 – iKhaya le Themba
be a waiting list soon! Proud doesn’t sufficiently say enough about this new
project and the shining light it is becoming to Ikhaya graduates.
Term 3 was a very busy time for Ikhaya. Grades 1 and 2
worked very hard towards our annual ballroom dancing
and modeling competition, Mr and Miss Spring 2016 held in
September. It was a magnificent event and the Ikhaya kids
never cease to amaze with their expertise and
professionalism. Thanks to Ntosh, our gifted dance teacher
who works tirelessly throughout the year.
Our M&E reports indicated that children who were
struggling emotionally have shown remarkable
development and healing through the love and care they
have received at Ikhaya. Children who weren't speaking or engaging have
done a 180 and are flourishing with new confidence in their own abilities. The
teachers celebrate this good news as it truly is wonderful to see the healing
work the Lord is doing in so many of our kids' lives. IKhaya's children are
encouraged to take leadership roles in their respective classrooms from as
young as 8 years old. Peer-to-peer teaching and teamwork are encouraged
in each class to advance higher level thinking and creativity.
Simunye Project Australia, visited Ikhaya for two days filled with great times
and connections. Twenty eleventh graders from HuntingTower school in
Victoria fundraised, worked, and saved to come to Cape Town to assist
iKhaya by planting two food gardens for our kids and parents to care for and
learn from. Soil for Life was engaged for this project, parents, community
members, and kids helped the student teams plant the gardens. iKhaya kids
are all learning more about food security and how to take care of the
environment this year. Simunye bonded instantly with the kids, through
homework help, games, hugs and loads of quality time. The entire group was
taken on a social impact tour by Phila and we shared our Heritage Day
celebrations with the Simunye. We braaied, sang and danced. It was such a
joy-filled event. Some of the kids dressed up as African mamas and loved
every moment. Simunye also donated special food parcels for each iKhaya
family.

FUN WEEK is celebrated the last week of the term as students are
taking exams and need to be able to de-stress as much as possible
during this time. Dave Katz, a local volunteer taught some of the
kids Go! (a game that promotes higher level and strategic thinking.
UCT Architecture students made funky game boards from recycled
materials with the grade 4 class.
The children also played checkers with chess pieces, card games
and netball. Old favourites such as acting, singing, drumming,
dancing, drawing and stories also came into play. We wrapped up
the week with an icec ream and cake party celebrating Ikhaya's
12th birthday, hosted by Never@Home Hostels. Ashton Morley made
a most amazing birthday cake! Wow! Thanks Ashton! We had a
short break and before we knew it Term 4 had begun!
Thanks to City Sightseeing, sponsors of the Parent Centre, Hout Bay
Rotary Club started a sewing group with
some of our moms. Their first time up the
ladies made some awesome backpacks
and shopping bags being sold at
Chardonnay Deli and hopefully La Cuccina
soon as well!
Knitting Class began with new knitters from
grades 3 and 4, pictured here Miss Susan
who helped Angie finish her owl! Special
thanks to the Christian Hiking Network, Alan
Scott and Pauline Molyneux who introduced
Miss Susan to Ikhaya. Master Knitting to
commence in 2017 Mother/Daughter/Granny classes!
Our teachers are remarkable in their care and love for the children!
When First grader, Kamva fell and broke his arm. His teacher, Sanele
Krishe, accompanied the student and his mom to the hospital. The
relationship between Ikhaya and parents is so strong and vital to the
core of our program.

A team from Mike Nightingale Fellowship Trust visited Ikhaya for several
days…to get to know us better, learning more about the needs of IY and
Ikhaya and teaching Sistahood a sewing class. They also met with the older
youth teaching a design classes where the students drew their dream homes
and rooms, also indicated where they lived on a map of Imizamo Yethu.
Ikhaya’s director attended a meeting between Mike Nightingale Fellowship
Trust and Hout Bay Partnership where it was suggested Ikhaya develop
replication plans for Hout Bay!
Our new Youth Development Program was very busy…. an iKhaya dream has
been to have some local interns from Imizamo Yethu involved at iKhaya.
Thanks to National Youth Development Agency, 10 students who had formally
matriculated were able to attend a training workshop readying them for
working with young children and youth in schools. iKhaya has 10 local interns
assisting in the classrooms which has made a huge impact on students,
teachers and the entire community! We are thrilled that we have them for a
total of nine months! We hope to be able to continue this program, vital to
helping youth find employment, courage and confidence. It is also a great
way to recruit and train new staff for iKhaya replication! We have already
been invited to come to Hangberg in the Harbour!
With thanks to Edward Snell who donated funds for the youth through Sports.
Swimming lessons have made a huge splash with 5 graduating and making
room for 5 more. A Running Club began with 5 parents and 3 students and
they’ve already won the My School Newcomers award, R5000!! Netball has 8
girls going for it and Soccer has 10 boys in need of soccer kits. They are off to
great new beginnings and Mhinti seems happier than ever before…she has
even started a running group with some of the moms!

NOURISH Bakery Update
Lihle and Sharon are thriving in the bread baking
business and branching out into Hout Bay Harbour at
Workspace where we hope to integrate IY, Hangberg
and Hout Bay all at once! As a graduate of Hout Bay High,,Lihle hopes to
train youth to continue baking at iKhaya AND he hopes to study at Raymond
Ackerman Academy next year. At the harbour there is also an espresso
machine and coffee roastery opportunity! Special thanks to the National
Lottery Commission, whose grant helped birth this project following Worker
Readiness Training Workshops. Some of the parents started a bakery and
then found the confidence to apply for jobs. Lihle came along when
everyone had become employed and with two of his high school friends took
over the bakery until they attended Chrysalis Academy. Two of those young
men secured employment while Lihle wanted the opportunity to run a
business of his own. Further funding has been applied for with the need for a
bread slicer and with hopes of launching a tourism shop offering Ikhaya
branded caps, shirts and water bottles along with social impact tours. City
Sightseeing has been a great help in shaping this project from the walking
tours on the red bus. We have applied for further assistance through Pick N
Pay and the Ackerman Family Foundation and through a competition at
Open Africa. Lihle is also being trained as a coffee barrista at Dario’s in Hout
Bay. You just may see an Ikhaya coffee blend soon!
We were featured in Living and Loving in August and thanks to their choosing
us, Spar blessed us with a R5,000 gift card! Our grade 1 and 2 teacher –
Sanele Krishe participated in a radio competition that won Ikhaya R10,000 in
food vouchers at Shoprite Checkers! Just goes to show you, where there’s a
will there’s a way! Everyone can get involved in fundraising for Ikhaya! Ein
Herz fur Kinder has been raising funds to help us build a new double classroom
and kitchen. It’s been a topic of discussion with many visiting German tourists
as well.

Be The Change You Wish to See
Thanks to the youth around the globe who so
very generously volunteer their time and love
to our kids! All Out Africa, You 2 Africa and
Volunteering Cape Town share some amazing
young people with us! It’s a great opportunity
for Ikhaya kids to enrich their cultural
knowledge. Our youth are bursting with
potential and creativity and too many are
confronted with overwhelming odds, forced
to forfeit their studies to secure short-term
employment to meet their day-to-day needs.
Too easily, the short-term becomes part of a
spiral that traps them in poverty in spite of their best efforts.
For (12) years Ikhaya le Themba has been enhancing the options and
capabilities of some of the most vulnerable children in Hout Bay. The beautiful
premises are staffed by 11 people and a host of volunteers. The 98 children
between the ages of 6 and 14 who currently attend iKhaya le Themba every
week-day afternoon receive homework assistance, a hot lunch as well as a
snack and fruit. Crucially, a safe environment has been provided where
children can read, dance, learn crafts and experience the type of life skills
and therapy groups that every child needs, but too few receive. It’s is an
incredibly fun place. The children who attend are selected based on the
extent of their need, but invariably grow in confidence and stature and this is
reflected in their ability to stay in school.
Special thanks to our child care workers who tirelessly give their best to our
kids while still attending university, seeing to their own households and being
amazing role models. In 2016 Neli achieved her degree as a Social Worker.
Thuli and Sanele were faced with housing challenges, Thuli’s shack was
threatened to be dismantled twice. Sanele’s home was demolished by a car
without brakes. The resilience with which our teachers and staff continue to
do their jobs is truly a remarkable testimony.

Annual Report 2016 – iKhaya le Themba
Ask Ikhaya’s kids what they love about Ikhaya
and you’ll have many answers but all will agree
the support, love and guidance received by their
teachers and the rest of the staff is priceless.
Here’s a bit of what our parents had to say at the
AGM in June: Family space – Comments from
Parents at AGM Meeting June 2016
1. Grateful for education and discipline,
because of grandson working in garden
2. Few organizations that focus on children…
encourage kids before they get corrupt.
Other organizations rather focus on
problems, and not nurturing the kids
3. Assistance with homework – because
parents have not much chance to help
4. Grateful for Afrikaans homework and
knitting lessons.
5. Connection between kids and staff –
happy that there is a plan for those who
graduate from iKhaya
6. Grateful for protection provided to child
7. Ikhaya helps reduce stress of parents –
focus on kids, but effects spread to parents.
Even including home visits by community
workers
8. Preparation for career: dropped out of
school but know wants to go back to
school
9. Happy for food available for kids
10. All 3 kids been at iKhaya – the smallest one
is 7. He surprises me because he is
gardening and dancing – missing ballet
11. Thanks to parents – always constant with
their support and ensuring peace at
iKhaya. Parents supporting the building up
of iKhaya. Chairman’s passion: closing
gap between black and white… also
closing the earnings gap through upliftment
and financial support.
Any unhappiness/ any changes proposed?
Point about teenagers – critical: they
should not go backwards after working with
them for 6 years… need support network -
Ikhaya has started a Youth Development
Program for kids who graduate from iKhaya
to help them stay in school and prepare
them for university
