Historic Virginia Land Conservancy 2016 Annual Report2

The Historic Virginia Land Conservancy (HVLC) had much to celebrate at the end of 2016, and the first half of 2017. If there is one word that can be used to describe the year, it is growth. Paramount to the year’s success were growth in the land protected; growth in the donor base; and growth in the HVLC’s future financial stability.

Land ProtectedThe HVLC grew its portfolio of conserved land to 6,560 acres with the preservation of two parcels, one in James City County (JCC), and one in Suffolk; both had been slated for residential development. The 88-acre parcel in Suffolk is situated adjacent to the Great Dismal Swamp and is important for the protection of two Tier Ia endangered species, the Canebrake Rattlesnake and Mabee’s Salamander. The 8-acre parcel in JCC’s Season’s Trace subdivision is situated adjacent to another easement held by the HVLC. Expanding the footprint of conservation through the protection of property that is contiguous to already eased land is always a good thing for the flora and fauna!

Donor BaseA targeted campaign to neighborhoods located near the HVLC’s existing conservation easements yielded positive results. In 2016, the HVLC gained 39 new members. Membership recruitment efforts in 2017 are already showing an increase in supporters joining in with our mission.

Future Financial StabilityWith the goal of establishing an Endowment for the HVLC, a very generous anonymous donor set up a $50,000 match. Jack Haldeman, former HVLC Secretary/Treasurer, serves as chair of the Endowment Committee, and through the group’s efforts, $32,000 of the $50,000 match was raised in 2016. The matching grant sunsets at the end of 2017, and the HVLC is confident that the remainder of the match will be raised during 2017. A $100,000 endowment is a great start to help to ensure for the financial future of the HVLC.

The HVLC also received a significant $82,500 bequest from The McVearry, Jr. Trust. Bequests are always received with mixed emotions. There is sadness for the loss of a life, and gratitude for being remembered in one’s will. The HVLC was honored to have been remembered by the McVearrys.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” The HVLC Board and Staff agree! There is great excitement for the work that is being done to protect and preserve land in the lower James, York and Rappahannock River watersheds. Thanks to the generous support the HVLC received, along with the cadre of enthusiastic volunteers, 2016 was another banner year. With many conservation opportunities on the horizon, look for additional great things to happen during the remainder of 2017!

intelligent people and the affection of children...

to leave the world a better place...to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to

Together We Are Making a Difference

Thanks to the ongoing and generous

support of individuals and businesses in our region, at the

end of 2016 the HVLC permanently protected 6,560 acres in the lower James, York and Rappahannock River watersheds. The dividends on your investment in the HVLC’s work cannot be calculated in dollars,

but in the knowledge that future generations will benefit,

because you cared.
