Sexual violence against children, women, men and gender non-conforming individuals is happening everywhere — military bases, college campuses, churches, schools, work and in our families. Understanding these institutions to be microcosms of our larger culture, the initiative promotes moving beyond blame and silos to identify the commonalities that will help to reframe and re-form how sexual violence is understood, treated and prevented. 3 Companies Families College Campuses Churches Military Bases She Prisons Nursi FOCUS AREA: IDENTITY Addressing discrimination based on gender (including intersections with race/ethnicity, class, ability, nationality, age, sexual orientation, religion, gender identity, immigration status, etc.) Initiative: Disrupting Gender Norms This initiative is designed to break down gender stereotypes and change how we have been taught to think about and value gender. Via publications and public education efforts, Re:Gender uses research to show why our ideas about gender are so ingrained, how we reinforce gender norms without realizing it and how we can create a different reality for future generations. Between the Door and the Street: Re:Gender served on the advisory board for this public art performance, conceived and directed by feminist artist Suzanne Lacy. An estimated 2,500 people gained new perspectives on feminism and social-justice issues. Recognition of Gender Equity Leaders: At the 2014 Annual Benefit, attended by nearly 400 guests, Re:Gender honored the following leaders advancing gender equity: Norma Kamali, Designer and Women's Empowerment Advocate Geri Thomas, Chief Diversity Officer and Georgia Market President, Bank of America Peter Warwick, Chief People Officer, Thomson Reuters Patricia Williams, James L. Dohr Professor of Law, Columbia University Re:Gender’s publications and expertise were featured in various publications, including The Washington Post, USA Today, The Economist, The Atlantic, Roll Call, The Daily Beast, Journalist’s Resource (based at Harvard Kennedy School Shorenstein Center) and Nevada Daily Mail. Women and Economic Security: Changing Policy and Practice Conference: Co-hosted with the University of Michigan (Center for the Education of Women), this three-day interdisciplinary, multisector national conference launched two new Re:Gender programs — the Gender and Money initiative and the Mariam K. Chamberlain Dissertation Award. Mariam K. Chamberlain Dissertation Award 2014 Recipient Team: Doctoral Candidate: Diana Y Salas Coronado Advisor: Dr. Randy Albelda University of Massachusetts, Boston Dissertation: “Gender and State-Level Immigrant Policies” White House Research on Girls Conference: A project of the White House Council on Women and Girls, the first ever White House Research on Girls Conference was planned in collaboration with the seven founding members of the Girls Research Coalition. The conference launched the coalition’s Girls Research Portal, a clearinghouse for research on girls. (In development and to be housed by Re:Gender. Forty-four publications currently available.) NETWORK Comprised of cross-sector institutions and individuals, our network facilitates a two-way flow of information between those who conduct research and those who use it, and taps into their collective power to bring about a gender-equal society.
