INTRODUCTION

The department is a unique establishment in and around western Maharashtra in educating

students as Materials Engineers. Day by day, the demand of this skilled human resource in the

industry is rising sharply due to the globalization of Indian economy. The department strives

hard in fulfilling these requirements. The active support of eminent members of alumni in India

and abroad - ranging from research scientists in developing computer chips to the managing

directors - has helped the department in training the students in state of the art technology.

There is an intake of 60 students for B.Tech course. Additional 6 students are admitted

through Diploma stream. From these students, ten may opt for Sandwich course. The total intake

capacity for M. Tech programme is 36 with specializations in Process Metallurgy and Physical

Metallurgy.

The Metallurgy and Material Science Department currently offers B.Tech. and M.Tech.

programmes. The B.Tech. programme offers a comprehensive fundamental education in

metallurgical engineering. The Department offers M.Tech. Programme in two specialization, i.e.

Physical Metallurgy and Process Metallurgy. The programme consists of course work in the

areas of specialization followed by a one year duration dedicated to thesis work.

MAJOR EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES

The department has excellent characterization facilities as well as various laboratories with

state of the art technical equipment. The main laboratories are: Chemical Analysis, Heat

Treatment, Physical Metallurgy, Powder Metallurgy, Mechanical Testing, Mechanical Working,

Computer, Tribology, Foundry, Cryogenic Treatment, Workshop, Corrosion and Polymer Nano-

composites Laboratory. The major equipment/instrument in the department are: Plastic

injection molding machine, X-Ray stress analyzer, XRD, Salt spray corrosion testing chamber

unit, Cryogenic treatment chamber, Sheet rolling mill, Automatic Polishing Machine, Automatic



Mounting Machine, 1600 oC Tube Furnace, Fluidized bed furnace, Stationary and Portable

Image Analyzer, Induction Furnace with low vacuum attachment, Keithely high resistivity meter

(Keithely 6517B), Compression molding machine up to 350 °C, Impedance Analyzer (Wayne

Kerr, UK), Pin-on-Disc tribometer, Vacuum oven, Jar mill with cooling system, DC drive of

rolling machine,

EQUIPMENT PURCHASED

7½ Digits Digital Multimeter, Image Analysis System, microscopes, 4 Points Probe

resistivity meter (Signatone PRO 4 – 4000) with source meter, Planetary Ball Mill, and Drip

carburizing furnace.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

Research is going on hot area such metal matrix composite, polymer matrix micro- and

nano-composites, electronic ceramic, protective coating materials and metal joining.

Prof. N.B. Dhokey has filed an Indian Patent vide 1884/MUM/2012 dtd. 29/9/2012

entitled Iron Particles Coated with Magnesium Compounds, Process for Preparing

These Iron Particles and Uses Thereof.

For Students

More than 15 students of final year B.Tech. (Metallurgical Engineering) passed GATE

2013 and scored All India Rank (AIR) in top 300. Out of these, 4 students are in top

150. This is the great achievement for the department and institute.

Mr. K. Gokhale M.tech. student of Prof. S.S. Hosmani was awarded “Best Poster Award”

in 3rd Asian Symposium on Materials & Processing (ASMP)-2012, organized by Indian

Institute of Technology, Madras and Division of Materials & Processing, Japan Society

of Mechanical Engineers at IIT-Madras, Chennai, India, 30-31 August, 2012.

Mr. Nikhil P. Silam M.Tech. student of Prof. S.P. Butee was awarded First prize for his

research work presented in a National level Paper Presentation Competition organized

(INNOVISION-13) by Rajarshi Shahu College of Engineering (RSCOE), Pune during

23-24 Fe., 2013.

Mr. Prathamesh S. Patil, B.Tech. (Meta), a student of Prof. S.P. Butee won second prize

at PIONEER 2013, a national level technical paper presentation competition organized by

ISTE Students' Chapter of Kolhapur institute of Technology's College of Engineering,

Kolhapur, Shivaji university, Kolhapur held on 24-25 Feb'2013. The title of his paper

was “Polymer Derived Ceramics”

IIM and ASM students‟ chapters conducted following events:

a. Brahma Prakash material science quiz for junior college students

b. Materials Camp - orientation programme for freshmen

c. National Metallurgist Day celebration

Prof. S.T.Vagge honored as Session chair at 2nd

Annual International Conference on

Materials Science, Metal & Manufacturing (M3 2012), at Hotel Fort Canning, Singapore,

19-20 November 2012.

Prof. S.S. Hosmani honored as co-chair of one Technical Session on Casting at Second

International Conference on Advances in Materials Processing and Characterization

(AMPC 2013), Chennai, India (February 7, 2013)."

Prof.S.T.Vagge attended (i) a course assessment plan and active/cooperative learning

approaches by Prof Jeff Froyd of Texas A & M University, USA during 6th and 7th

December 2012 at COEP, (ii) two day workshop on “I become initiative” in September

2012 at COEP.

MOUs (if any)

A MOU between ETON, USA and COEP Pune has been signed in Feb. 2013, regarding

development of corrosion engineering laboratory in the department of Metallurgy and

Materials Science, CoEP.
