Dear Friends,

As we refl ect on 2009, many circumstances cause us to see the diffi culties faced by our families, friends, and neighbors. The loss of a job, the foreclosure of a home, or an illness with subsequent healthcare costs can send lives spiraling out of control. People struggled with basic needs in greater numbers.

We can also focus on the positive: 2009 brought so many more people to support the Food Bank’s goals and mission. People who had resources to share selected the Food Bank to help their hungry neighbors.

Children from area schools created a host of ways to support the Food Bank. A league bowling team, a bridge group, a car club, and many other social groups sent checks to help with the work. Area offi ce employees elected to give funds in lieu of their usual “Secret Santa” gifts to one another. A true act of Christmas spirit!

Volunteers helped with mailings, offi ce work, and food distribution. The value of their assistance and friendship to the Food Bank is much appreciated.

In 2010, we will celebrate the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley’s 20th Anniversary as a branch of Regional Food Bank of NENY. It is with the assistance of thousands of people, from the change donated by a child to a $100,000 gift from a foundation or local legislator that has made two decades of success possible. The community’s support for the Food Bank should be heralded. As times have gotten got tough, the people of the Hudson Valley have reached out to those most in need.

We extend our gratitude for that support.

Sincerely,

Jan WhitmanDirectorFood Bank of the Hudson Valley

Dear Friends,

We faced many serious challenges at the Regional Food Bank as 2009 began. The economy was in turmoil, unemployment was rising, food pantries and soup kitchens were serving record numbers of people, and our food supplies were very low. At a time when many human service agencies were cutting back on their services, the Food Bank was being asked to do more.

We were very concerned. But we also had faith we would somehow fi nd a way to respond to growing need all around us. I am proud to say that, with generous support from the community, we succeeded. We increased food donations and provided 22.4 million pounds of food to our member agencies, a 15% increase over 2008 and nearly three million pounds more than we ever provided before. It is so gratifying to know our eff orts helped put 17 million meals on the table for hungry people in our area, many of whom were experiencing such a need for the fi rst time.

We also participated in a hunger study last year in partnership with Feeding America, the national network of food banks. The study, called Hunger in America, confi rmed we are serving nearly 250,000 people a year, a 25% increase since 2005. Thus we know our services are needed more than ever right now.

Fortunately we live in a very generous community. We could never do our work without the help of so many people who donate food, money, time, and expertise to our cause. Their love and generosity inspire us and help us improve the lives of countless people in our community.

Sincerely,

Mark QuandtExecutive Director

regional food bank snapshotThe Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York is a private, not-for-profi t organization that has been helping to feed the poor and hungry in our communities since 1982. The Food Bank works in partnership with all segments of the food industry–manufacturers, retailers, wholesalers, growers, and brokers–who donate food that may be mislabeled, overproduced, short weighted, or close to expiration. The food is stored at the Food Bank’s 62,000 square-foot warehouse in Latham and distributed to food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, and other charitable agencies in 23 counties.

The Regional Food Bank opened a 55,000 square-foot branch facility called Food Bank of the Hudson Valley in 1990 to meet the growing need in the lower Hudson Valley area. It is located in Cornwall-on-Hudson in Orange County. The combined service area of the Regional Food Bank and Food Bank of the Hudson Valley encompasses 41% of the landmass of New York State.

22.4 Million Pounds of Food

Distributed in 2009 to Agencies in

23 Counties in New York State

poundage and programs

Over 250 food industry businesses donated food and non-food grocery items, and hundreds of individuals generously contributed through food drives and other eff orts to make it possible for the Food Bank to serve its member agencies. Donations are received from food companies throughout our 23-county service area and from national companies through our relationship with Feeding America, the national network of food banks. The Regional Food Bank accepts products that are surplus, off -size or color, discontinued, close-to-code/best-used by date, shipped in error…unmarketable for whatever reason, but still good to use. For donations that come in bulk or are cosmetically damaged, volunteers and staff work to make these donations usable for our member agencies by sorting and repacking.

The Food Bank completed its fourth year of operating the Patroon Land Farm in 2009. To date, over 250, 000 pounds of produce have been grown and distributed through the Food Bank to people in need. Our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program expanded to 186 members, providing the Farm more fi nancial stability and an opportunity to expand our acreage to grow more vegetables to feed the hungry.

The Food Bank served over 244,000 people in 2009, an increase of 25% since 2006. Agencies experienced increases in clients seeking emergency food assistance anywhere from 10-50%, depending on the agency. Despite the economic stress that was felt by nearly everyone, our generous community helped out in a big way. Food and monetary donations continued to fl ow in, and many people who could not help out fi nancially donated their time and services to assist us in the offi ce or sort food in the warehouse. We could not have met the increased need without the help of our community.

thank you

The Gift of TIME

“It means a great deal to me to rescue

food so that needy folks can be fed.”

Ted Thompson, Volunteer

Volunteers are vital to the Food Bank’s operation and contribute in countless ways. Sorting food, picking produce at our farm, or raising money at a fund raising event—there are endless varieties of enjoyable, rewarding tasks that volunteers perform every day.

The Gift of TALENT

“The Food Bank should not spend its money

on pavement; it should put its money into food.”

Emil Galasso, In-Kind Donor of Paving Services

This sentiment refl ects the feelings of many donors of in-kind supplies and services. Their gifts allow the Food Bank to get more food to more hungry people.

The Gift of TREASURE

“Anything my family can do to respond to the needs of the

hungry is consistent with our social and spiritual world view.

Helping the Regional Food Bank in particular provides an extra

sense of satisfaction because it is an effi cient organization that

can signifi cantly leverage the resources its supporters provide.”

Don Csaposs, Financial Donor

“I fi nd it a humbling experience to play a small part in such a large community

eff ort to eliminate hunger.”

David Sullivan, Champlain Valley Apple Storage

The food industry is the backbone of food banking. Its support is critical to the Food Bank’s work.

Financial donations sustain the Food Bank and enrich the larger community by providing nourishment, dignity, and a sense of sharing to all involved. Funds come from grants, special events, and contributions, and each donation makes a meaningful diff erence.

how you can help

The staff of the Regional Food Bank and Food Bank of the Hudson Valley would like to extend a special thank you to all who helped us in 2009 through fundraising, food donations, volunteer eff orts, and in a multitude of other ways. We are grateful for the time, energy, and resources our generous community provided in 2009 to ensure we were able to help as many people as possible during a time when it was so desperately needed.
