Chicago Lights makes a difference on Chicago’s urban landscape by fostering education and literacy, advancing health and wellness, and
alleviating hunger and homelessness.
27,562 healthy meals nurtured the bodies and spirits of adults and children.
422 hours of exercise sessions and dance classes promoted active and healthy
lifestyles for children and adults.
23,115 hours of tutoring and mentoring helped break the cycle of poverty for
children living in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods.
The result is changed lives – for 7,000 people served,
as well as for 1,100 individual donors,
1,092 volunteers, 70 corporations and foundations, and
50 staff members whose combined efforts help make Chicago’s urban landscape
a more humane, just, and equitable place to live.
A Letter from the Board President
Nowhere has the recent economic downturn been felt more acutely than among those already living on the precipice. Last year, Chicago Lights saw a significant increase in the number of people seeking help with the challenges of unemployment, hunger, lack of housing, aging, and access to health care and education. The Chicago Lights Elam Davies Social Service Center saw unprecedented numbers of recently unemployed professionals who suddenly found themselves in a position where they never imagined they would be—asking for help.
With the help of 1,100 donors and 1,092 volunteers, Chicago Lights was able to touch the lives of each of these people, more than at any other time in its history, while being mindful of expenses. At the same time, the Chicago Lights Board continued implementation of a strategic plan with a view to position Chicago Lights to provide innovative solutions to our community’s most pressing needs, while creating long-term, sustainable change.
We are immensely grateful for more than $1,235,000 in gifts from individuals, foundations, and corporations toward our total revenue of $2,029,000 in 2008, which have made hope a reality for so many. In reviewing this year’s annual report, consider how your own life might be touched and enriched by volunteering or by making a gift, however large or small, to Chicago Lights.
Thank you.

Plan Your Gift for the Future You can ensure the sustainability of Chicago Lights programs long into the future and further your financial goals by planning a gift during your lifetime that will benefit Chicago Lights through your estate. Plan gifts for the future through wills, charitable gift annuities, life insurance, retirement plans, and various types of charitable trusts.
Volunteer Your TimeIn 2008, over 1,000 volunteers gave their gifts of time and talent, significantly extending Chicago Lights’ outreach. Our work would not be possible without the generous help of our volunteers.
For more information on ways to give, visit www.chicagolights.org or contact the Development Office at 312.640.2576. Checks, made payable to Chicago Lights, can be sent to 126 E. Chestnut St, Chicago IL 60611.

Provide hope and opportunity Every Day of the Year.Give a gift that changes lives.
Designate Chicago Lights for a Matching Gift“It’s not complicated at all. It’s an opportunity for those in business to supplement their giving,” says Don Hunt, one of Chicago Lights’ first board members. Usually contributors just fill out a form. “Everyone should find out whether they have a matching gifts program with their organization, and then it’s just a matter of designating Chicago Lights as the recipient,” Don says. “It’s a win-win: you win by giving to Chicago Lights, and you win by taking advantage of the matching program to double your gift.”
You can also designate Chicago Lights through your company’s United Way Campaign. Contact your human resources offices for more information about United Way and matching gifts.
Give Memorial Gifts and Tribute GiftsConsider a gift dedicated to someone or to marking a special occasion. This generosity honors everyone involved and creates a lasting, positive legacy. Chicago Lights acknowledges memorial and tribute gifts by sending an appropriate note to the family or honoree. The amount of your gift will not be mentioned and a separate receipt will be sent to you.

Individual Donors

Chicago Lights is grateful to acknowledge the generous gifts given by our 1,100 donor households during the 2008 calendar year:
Chicago Lights Center for Whole Health (CWH) engages more than 1,700 people annually by providing health and wellness services that address the needs of body-mind-spirit. The Center promotes health and wellness through teaching, counseling, and education for people of all ages.
The CWH focuses Chicago Lights outreach on healthy aging, mental health, women’s health, cardiovascular health, and the joy and responsibilities of care giving. CWH partners with community agencies and foundations to impact the growing need for whole health services and practices. Over the past year, CWH offered two community health fairs and weekly health and wellness drop-in appointments, which provided health screenings and immunizations for guests of Chicago Lights Elam Davies Social Service Center. The Center’s Healthy Heart
Project also continued to reach out to lower-income African-American women to help them improve heart health by reducing stress and developing new diet and exercise habits. Kimberly Embery is a peer leader for the Healthy Heart Project. She previously lived in Sanctuary Place, a residence for formerly homeless women. She learned healthy habits through CWH’s outreach and today
lives independently, works full time, and recently got married. “I want to thank Chicago Lights very much for everything that they have done and are going to do for women and men coming out of addiction to allow them the chance to live and learn about how to eat healthily.”

Chicago Lights Free Write Jail Arts and Literacy at Nancy B. Jefferson Alternative School (NBJ) provides the only one-to-one literacy tutoring available for more than 480 youth incarcerated in the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center, giving voice to students through media arts and literacy.
Too often students at NBJ are defined by the worst thing they may have ever done. With one-to-one instruction in writing, reading, and visual arts, Chicago Lights helps these students find meaningful pathways toward a transformed sense of identity through publishing their work in a quarterly newsletter, an annual anthology, and on the website www.freewritejailarts.org. In 2008, for the first time students participated in Louder than a Bomb, Chicago’s annual citywide youth poetry slam. A virtual team was sent by recording the team’s poems, which were then played at the slam and heard by more than 1,500 persons.
One girl in the poetry group said, “We want to be seen as more than the crime we are here for. We have stories to tell. Many of us could be future artists, doctors, and lawyers. We want a chance to become those things.”

Chicago Lights Center for Life and Learning (CLL) provides more than 250 men and women 60 years and more with daily opportunities to explore new interests, pursue well-being, strengthen friendships, and shape their lives and communities.
CLL offers purpose, hope, and meaning in the fullness of life’s journey through a variety of social, educational, cultural, and
physical activities. The Retirement Research Foundation extended funding to CLL in 2008, providing for the continuation of its variety of activities, increasing its visibility, expanding programs to attract a younger audience and more men, and improving data collection so the Center can better serve its members.
The percentage of male members doubled from 2007 to 2008. Bob Sherman said about the members of his Men’s Only discussion group, “What impresses me the most about the people in my group is their life experiences. We all meld together and we learn from each other.”

Chicago Lights Elam Davies Social Service Center (EDSSC) meets basic human needs and offers a path to self-sufficiency for nearly 4,000 adults. One-to-one services include distribution of food and clothing, housing assistance and information, and referrals to other organizations. Additional services include computer instruction, job readiness training, community voicemail, health screenings, support groups, advocacy, and weekly hot meals.
As the economy declined in 2008, the EDSSC saw increased need and extended Chicago Lights outreach to alleviate hunger. The program collaborated with two local food pantries to form the Near North Nutrition Unification Project in order to increase nutritional awareness and teach proper food preparation. The EDSSC also increased food bag distribution by 66 percent from the first to fourth quarter.
As the EDSSC continues to provide for others, those receiving care are inspired to give back. Daniel Gianotti, through the support of the
EDSSC, has gotten back on a path of self sufficiency and today is a Chicago Lights volunteer and donor. “I began volunteering because I thought I would like to give back for all the times that people have given to me. I feel like life is a two-way street; I just felt like I had to show them my appreciation.”

Chicago Lights Tutoring helps break the cycle of poverty through education for more than 400 students from low-income families by encouraing students to stay in school, graduate from high school, and pursue higher education and meaningful careers.
Chicago Lights provides students, in grades one through twelve, weekly one-to-one tutoring sessions with volunteer tutors/mentors, healthy meals, arts programming, and computer lab access. High school students are also provided scholarships and job training opportunities. In 2008 we enhanced our arts programming with dance classes, martial arts, and visual arts and showcased
students’ talents with a year-end presentation. We continued to engage students in academic growth with two new initiatives, a spelling bee for first through sixth graders and M-cubed—Making Math Matter.
Marcus Ziegler had struggled in school but spent the last five years taking advantage of Chicago Lights projects, such as Job Training, and developed a lasting relationship with his tutor. “A tutor is not just someone who helps you with your homework; they can also become your friend. I really love my tutor,” Marcus says. Today, he has improved his grades. “The most important thing that I’ve learned from Chicago Lights Tutoring would be that you can achieve anything if you set your mind to it.”

Chicago Lights Summer Day provides learning and social activities for more than 125 elementary-school children annually. Academic classes, arts education, computer learning, music, field trips, and healthy meals are included in the six-week program.
Once school is out, it can be a struggle for parents to find engaging activities in a safe environment for their children. Summer Day’s curriculum in 2008 was centered on the theme “Explore Dream Discover: A Vision for the Future.” Children explored the issues of going green, elder wisdom, healthy lifestyle choices, and poverty and homelessness. At the end of the program, the children presented a dynamic, multicultural music and dance performance for the community.
Deleasia Bailey, an eighth grader, spent her summer with Chicago Lights. “ Summer Day was awesome! It really helped me with my studies for the new school year!”

Chicago Lights Literacy and Arts at the Near North Magnet Cluster Schools (NNMC) supports learning through literacy and arts programs for nearly 1,000 students in three Near North Magnet-clustered public elementary schools.
To further its top priority—literacy—NNMC engages students through the Accelerated Reader™ classroom project, encouraging independent reading and rewarding students for their efforts. In 2008, more than 600 students met their reading goals. Three hundred of these students also participated in expanded fine arts classes to reinforce literacy through learning scripts, public speaking, and movement. The school year culminated with the Festival of the Heart, an annual production with NNMC principals, teachers, and students. The Festival
helped build community among the schools and celebrated the students’ success with more than 1,000 neighborhood residents who attended the performance.
As he began his sophomore year at Loyola Academy in 2008, Tony Harris attributed his current school success to his participation with Chicago Lights’ literacy and arts programming for six years. “I’m seeing things that I can accomplish, things I didn’t think were possible before. I can be confident, and I can influence others in what I do.”
