Dear Friend,
Welcome to Elim Park! Our Annual Report this year
illustrates the numerous ways Elim Park is part of the
Greater Cheshire community as well as the vital role
the community plays at Elim Park.
Since moving to Cheshire from Shelton, CT in 1958,
Elim Park, a not for profit continuing care retirement
community, has been a vibrant and integral member
of the community. We provide a wonderful living
option for the area’s seniors that allows them to
remain vital and active citizens while enjoying a
fulfilling lifestyle, featuring security, safety and peace-
of-mind, all within a Christ centered environment.
We are also an important part of Cheshire’s economy.
With 350 employees, many of whom live in Cheshire,
we are the town’s third largest employer. Along with
remaining socially active in the area, our 300 inde-
pendent seniors continue to shop and run errands in
town, helping to support local businesses and adding
vitality to the regional economy.
As an active member of the Greater Cheshire Chamber
of Commerce for the past 28 years, we play a key role
in enhancing the community’s business climate. In
addition to hosting Chamber events, we also serve as a
meeting place for numerous civic and
social organizations.
We are proud to call Cheshire
“home” and look forward to con-
tinuing to serve the community,
its seniors and their families for
years to come.
Welcome to Elim Park

It was many years ago, but Sheldon Dill’s eyes still lightup when he recalls his first visit to Elim Park. “I stoppedby for their Christmas Festival, and I was very impressedwith the community,” explained Sheldon, a Cheshire resident for more than 50 years and a respected, friendlybusinessperson who chooses his words thoughtfully.“But what really caught my eye were the relationshipsbetween the staff and the residents. There was an undeniable bond of mutual respect and friendshipthere. That image has stayed with me throughout the years.”
As the executive director of the Cheshire Chamber ofCommerce, Sheldon is in a position to see daily the truebreadth of Elim Park’s impact on Cheshire and the sur-rounding communities. “Many people think of ElimPark as a local retirement community that they can turnto for their parents’ or some other relatives’ needs. Butas a long-time business person, I can tell you Elim Park
is far more than that,” said Sheldon. “They are a vitalpart of the local business community and a valued andactive member of the Chamber of Commerce. They helpcreate a stronger local economy by supporting areabusinesses and have funded additional training andequipment for the Cheshire Police and FireDepartments on a yearly basis. Elim Park does a lot forour community behind the scenes and in ways mostpeople never stop to consider.”
Pat Bowman, owner of R.W. Hines Ace Hardware, knows firsthand the importance of Elim Park to localbusinesses. “As a small business owner, I appreciate thebusiness of longtime customers,” emphasized Pat.“Elim Park has been with us for over 28 years. They arean essential part of my company’s business and of thecommunity.”
An Essential Part of the Community

For years, Herb Strand was known around Cheshire assimply “the egg man.” As the proprietor of Strand Farmon Mount Sanford Road, Herb’s blue eyes and warmsmile greeted the residents of the Cheshire area as hedelivered fresh, local eggs to the doorsteps of 700 cus-tomers and stores. Today, Herb remains close to family, friends and the town he calls “home” while living in theMallard Mill residential neighborhood at Elim Park.
“After my wife passed away, the farm got to be too bigand too much work,” recalled Herb. “I have lived inCheshire since 1948 and didn’t want to move far frommy friends. Living at Elim Park allows me to stay intown. It’s comfortable, there are things to do, the people are friendly and the food is excellent. Several ofmy friends already live here, and my niece Nancy livesclose by in Wallingford.”
One of Herb’s friends is Doris Raynor, who is in theprocess of moving into Elim Park Place. Doris and Herb
both attend services at Trinity Evangelical Free Churchof Woodbridge, as do several other Elim Park residents. With the comfort of familiar friends and continued tieswith his church, Herb was at ease with the decision tomove to Elim Park Place.
Another long-time friend at Elim Park is HousekeepingSupervisor Eloise “Ellie” Draper. Possessing a warmsmile and a generous heart that envelopes all aroundher, Ellie recently celebrated 38 years of employment atElim Park and can remember Herb and his wife deliver-ing 60 dozen eggs every week to the Elim Park kitchen.
“I’ve known Mr. Strand for 30 years. He and Mrs.Strand always came by and delivered our eggs. Theywere both such hard workers,” remembered Ellie. “It’snice to have him living here now. We chat about thedays when he delivered eggs and about his farm. A lotof his customers from Cheshire live here now. It’s asmall world.”

Helping others in the community is second nature to
Julie Planeta, MPT (Masters in Physical Therapy), and
her husband Matthew. After graduating from nearby
Quinnipiac University in 2001, Julie began working as a
physical therapist at Elim Park’s spacious and well-
known short-term and outpatient rehabilitation center.
Here, Julie, who is always smiling and speaking words of
encouragement, spends her days helping people, includ-
ing many from surrounding communities, recover from
back and neck injuries, strokes or regain their strength
and mobility after joint replacement surgery. Last year,
Elim Park’s rehab program treated 450 patients, 219 of
whom were outpatients, including 92 from Cheshire.
“We use specific conditioning exercises and treatments
like ultrasound and electric stimulation to help our peo-
ple recover and regain their quality of life,” Julie enthusi-
astically explained one morning of late in the sunlit reha-
bilitation center. “Although we treat all ages, we have a
tremendous amount of experience treating seniors and
helping them remain independent and active. The new
Wellness Center will expand our therapy program, allow-
ing us to conduct rehabilitation exercises in a warm
water pool. Aqua-therapy is an exciting tool and will be a
huge benefit for our patients.”
Inspired to help others, Julie and Matthew recently
moved to Cheshire from Branford. Matthew, who teach-
es seventh grade at Dodd Middle School, felt he could
be a stronger role model and influence on his students if
he lived in Cheshire and they saw him around town, out-
side of school.
“A lot of the recent incidents in schools reported in the
papers really bothered my husband. He wants to make a
positive difference,” said Julie. “So we moved here and
got involved in the community. Matthew coaches girls’
softball, I play in the town’s softball league and am in
the community chorus, and we joined Grace Baptist
Church. Cheshire is our home now.”

Elim Park’s new Wellness Center, scheduled to open in
Spring 2008, will further enhance our innovative health
and fitness program that has placed the continuing care
retirement community among the national leaders in pro-
moting people’s wellness in body, mind and spirit.
Highlights of the center include a warm water pool,
group exercise studio and a strength training and cardio-
vascular exercise room. The pool will enable the profes-
sional and caring rehabilitation staff to provide valuable
aquatic therapies to the hundreds of patients who utilize
Elim Park’s short-term and outpatient rehabilitation pro-
grams on an annual basis. Plans are to also add water
aerobics, water walking and swimming to the retirement
community’s health and fitness offerings for residents
and wait-list members.
The new Wellness Center will also allow Elim Park to
expand its exercise and fitness programs, which are devel-
oped and conducted under the supervision of a nationally
certified exercise physiologist. Among the exciting new
classes for residents to be unveiled in the new center is a
FallProof! class, which will improve participants’ balance
and mobility, thereby decreasing the risk of a fall and
possible injury. Additional services will be available such
as massage therapy and person training.
Creating an environment where people can remain
independent and active is the primary goal of the
wellness program.
Dear Friend,
As I reflect upon the past year and the Celebrate Life!
Capital Campaign, I am humbled by the experience. The
campaign helped fund The Wellness Center and Bethel
Place for our residents and the greater Cheshire commu-
nity. I am touched by the generosity of our donors; from
the dollar a week a part time staff member gives; to the
sacrificial giving from our residents, businesses and
friends; to the major lead gift from Hilmer and Ethel
Nelson in Minnesota. All our donors personally demon-
strate a passion to continue Elim Park's century-long
mission of service to others. For that, our team says
“THANK YOU.”

To our many friends and neighbors, I offer a personal
greeting. I am blessed to know you and to have received
your support and encouragement. May God continue to
bless you in 2008 as we serve one another in His love
and grace.

Director of Planned Giving
Honor God in all we do.Realizing that God has raised up this ministry and hassustained it since 1906, we seek to honor Himthrough our service and whatever we do, we “do itheartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men” (Col. 3:23).
Encourage spiritual growth.Desiring that each resident grow spiritually throughouttheir life at Elim Park, opportunity is presented “togrow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord andSaviour, Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18) so that “thoughthe outer man perish, yet the inner man is renewedday by day” (2 Cor. 4:16), that “none should see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ,” (Luke 2:26).
Respect the dignity of life. Each person is God’s creation. In God’s “hand is thesoul of every living thing, and the breath of allmankind” (Job 12:10). The love God has for each ofhis children is enough reason for us to have a greatrespect for the dignity of life.
Commit to excellence. It is important that our service be the best of whichwe are capable. Our work will be excellent if we trulyare “doing service as to the Lord, and not to men,”(Eph. 6:7).
Respect the individual. In I Thessalonians 5:12 we are told to “respect thosewho work hard among you.” And in Galatians 6:10 we
are admonished to “do good to all men especiallyunto them who are of the household of faith.”
Hire and retain highly competent staff that have acaring attitude and high moral character. The key to service excellence is the staff. We seekthose like Daniel whom God favored, being “skillfulin all wisdom and gifted in knowledge and under-standing” (Dan. 1:4). Staff should also have the caring heart and high moral character of the GoodSamaritan (Luke 10:30-35). While it is difficult to findall of these qualities in any one individual, they serveas a reliable guide for selecting staff. Employees areempowered to act in the best interests of the residents and the organization and become goodstewards of the resources entrusted to them.
Maintain open communication. In order to provide a harmonious environment forresidents and staff, it is essential that communica-tion flow freely. “Behold, how good and pleasant itis for brethren to dwell together in unity,” (Ps. 133:1).
Be fiscally responsible. We must be good stewards of the resources entrustedto us. Every asset is a gift from God to be used for theresidents who live at Elim Park, “for we aim at what ishonorable in the Lord’s sight, but also in the sight ofman,” (II Cor. 8:21). “Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful,” (I Cor. 4:2).
