I am pleased to present CORA’s Fiscal Year 2007-2008 Annual

Report, which summarizes the highlights of CORA’s services

to the San Mateo County community for the time period July 1,

2007 – June 30, 2008.

This report showcases the people and organizations that

make CORA’s work possible. Together we can end the

intergenerational cycle of violence in San Mateo County. On

behalf of the thousands who will make that brave first call

for help, thank you for helping us restore wholeness in our

families and in the community. I truly believe that – with the

continued support of our financial supporters, volunteers, and

partner agencies – we will realize our collective vision of the

day when no child has to grow up in fear and no one has to

feel unsafe in their own home.

Domestic/datingviolenceandabuseaffectsthousandsoffamiliesinSanMateoCountyeachyear

andcrossesallracial,ethnic,andsocioeconomicboundaries.Itsharmfuleffectsreachfarbeyond

victims’homesandtheirfamilies.CORA’smissionistoendtheintergenerationalcycleofviolence

inourcounty.Wemustworktogethertoincreaserecognitionofandtreatment,intervention,

andsupportservicesforthishighlyunderreportedcrime.

Domestic Violence Affects Everyone

ThewholeofSanMateoCountyisimpactedbydomesticviolence:employersloserevenuethrough

increasedhealthcarecosts,absenteeism,andlostjobproductivity;hospitalscarrydebtfromthe

unpaidmedicalbillsofvictimswithoutmedicalinsurance;policeservicesareoverextended;and

alreadystrainedhomelessandmentalcareprogramsencounterevenmorepeopleinneed.

notstandbackandwatchthismanharmmychild.Thiswas

oneofthemajorreasonsthatIturnedtoCORAforhelp.”

CORA’sServicesareinHighDemand Raising awareness about the dynamics of domestic violence and providing services to the community at large and to traditionallyunderservedpopulations,CORAadministersthecounty’slargestresponsetothiswidespreadproblem.

Housing Program

CORA’semergencyshelterprovidesuptotwomonthsaccommodation.And,after6-8weeksattheshelter,residentsmaybeeligiblefortransitionalhousing.During the2007-2008fiscalyear,CORAofferedemergencyshelterandservicesto86victimsofdomesticviolenceandtheirchildrenandprovidedtransitionalhousingto33adultsandchildren.Eightypercentofclientsexitedourshelterprogramtoeithertransitionalorpermanenthousing.

Client Support Services Program

CORA’sClientSupportServicesProgramisafront-linesupportsystemcomposedofa24-hourcrisishotline(1-800-300-1080)answeredinbothEnglishandSpanish;crisisinterventioncounseling;peersupportgroups;aparentingeducationandsupportgroup;andcounselinginlocalneighborhoods.

Inthepastfiscalyear,CORAfielded4,615callsonthecrisishotline,provided1,451individualcrisiscounselingsessions,and179supportgroupsessions.sessions.

Legal Program

Inthelastfiscalyear,CORA’slegalstaffhelpedfile792restrainingordersandotherprotectiveorcustodyorders,supportedclientswith55courtaccompaniments,andanswered894callsonourLegalInformationLine (650-259-1855).

Community Outreach

Duringthe2007-2008fiscalyear,theCommunityEducation team provided training on the dynamics of datinganddomesticviolenceandrelatedissuesto2,172adultcommunitymembersand1,670teensatlocalhighschools,courtandcommunityschools,andsocialserviceorganizationsservingyouth.

Emergency Response Program (ERP)

TheonlyprogramtocollaboratewithalllawenforcementdepartmentsinSanMateoCounty,ERPprovides24-hourphone counseling support during or immediately following a911domesticdisturbancecall.Inthepastfiscalyear,1,957residentsofSanMateoCountywereprovidedassistancethroughthisprogram.

CORA’sFundingisNeverCertainCORA depends on grants and contracts from city and local governments,donationsfromprivatefoundations,andsupportfromdonorsinthecommunity.Grantsmustbereappliedforyearly,andthefundingisneverguaranteed.Fundsobtainedoneyearcanbereducedoreliminated.

CORA’s Mission is to End Domestic Violence and Abuse in San Mateo County CORA is the only agency in San Mateo County that provides comprehensive services to victims and survivors of domestic violence.Lawenforcementagencies,theHumanServicesAgencyandothercountyagenciesdependonCORA’s31yearsofexpertiseforacompleterangeofprevention,education,andinterventionservices.CORAprovidesthemostcomprehensiveresponsetotheproblemofdomesticviolenceinthecounty.

Asamulticulturalagency,CORAiscommittedtoservingclients,regardlessofage,ethnicity/race,financialstatus,language,sexualorientation, immigration status, class, religion,gender,andmentalorphysicalability.CORAprovides free,multi-lingualservicesinEnglish,Spanish,andTagalog.
