Community Radio – information at grassroots
Seeing is believing. This is what about 30 students accompanied by four faculty members of St.
Joseph’s Degree and PG college could experience during their visit to Pastapur, a village near Zaheerabad
about 140 Kms. away from Hyderabad.
A first of its kind in India, Sangham Radio is a community radio program created, produced, edited
and hosted by women in rural Telangana. The Deccan Development Society (DDS) is behind this initiative.
On October 15, 2018, Sangham Radio celebrated its 10th anniversary, definitely a proud moment for having
25
withstood all odds of running a program like this. The stars behind this ‘communication at grass roots level’
venture are General Narsamma and AlgoleNarsamma, coincidentally both Narsamma as their suffixes.
In fact the radio effort began way back in 1998 and it took 10 years for them, to put this to fruition.
It was rejected by the Government on technical grounds but UNESCO offered assistance to set up an
informal mode for the radio.
The two Narsammas got all out support from two stalwarts Mr. Patil of AIR and Mr. P. V. Satheesh
, Director of DDS.
Speaking on the occasion, the Director DDS recollected the journey of Sang ham Community Radio
while narrating the decade old struggle in getting licensed by the Government. He said “it costs almost Rs.
5 cores to set up an FM Radio while they managed to do it with Rs. 25 laths”. Sang ham Radio discusses all
development strategies, nutritional superiority of its crops, ecological farming practices and supports local
peasants. The information conveyed through Sang ham Radio is peppered in the local slang to drive home
the point among local people.
Professor Vend Pavarala added “these rural women are the best teachers of development
communication as they have hands-on experience on real struggles faced. This flavour goes missing in the
book. These brave women have looked after their radio as their daughter.” It is sad that Government still
owes Rs. 3.5 lakhs to Sangham Radio towards advertising.A community radio activist Mr. SajaVenniyoor
shared his journey with Sangham Radio. He felt that Community Radio is able to uplift more number of
people than AIR.
Radio producer General Narsamma, in all humility, narrated how she finally claims with pride “This
is our radio. My radio is my strength”. She expressed her desire to improve on technical aspects of radio.
Mr. N. A. Shah Ansari, President of Community Radio advised the organisation to generate revenue
through private advertisements rather than banking upon Government for the ads and the funds thereupon.
He4 likened Sangham Radio to Dronacharya from mythology and other radio stations as Ekalavyas.
Director of St. Joseph’s Degree and PG College, Dr. P. L. Vishweshwer Rao emphasised the
significance of autonomy in community radio. He also stressed that development cannot take place without
involvement.
UNESCO Officer, Mr. Amin equated community radio to a Fourth Estate in India because it works
for the people. Community radio connects strings of every individual in the community with regional
language. He urged that sustainability of the radio station is important for progression. On behalf of
UNESCO, Mr. Amin volunteered to pay for electricity for one year as a tribute to the rural women of
Pustapur for their passion.
The two Narsammas were felicitated with mementos and special gifts and an appetising course of healthy
organic lunch followed.

Typesetting process
The smell of the ink welcomed the students on the way to composing room. The composing room contained the
computers that receives the news stories in electronic format as the typeset codes which appears same in the
newspaper. The colour grading and the differences between the usage of RGB and CYAN colours were briefly
explained by the supervisor.
Plate making process
The second walk is through plate making process. The film of the page, usually two pages at a time, is placed on a
lighted box. Next, an aluminium plate containing a light-sensitive coating is placed on top of the image of the pages.
The light box is then switched on, and ultraviolet light developed the image of the pages onto the aluminium plate.
The aluminium plate is then bent at the edges and is fitted onto plate cylinder.
Printing process
The aluminium plates then sent into a printing machine which is of two storeys high. The plate cylinders then press
the image of the page onto a blanket cylinder. The cylinders finally puts the image onto the paper.the students were
amused by the jet squirting and the automatic technology how the blank spaces were cleared with the water where
the ink is not needed.
Folding process
The walk through folding zone showed how the technology made man work easier. The large sheets of printed
broadsheets were sent into a folder machinery. It automatically cut newspapers and folded in order. There was a
continuous inspection to check perfect alignment, colour grading and cutting. According to the staff, almost 1 lakh
75 thousand copies were printed for the Hyderabad region per day and a little less during weekends.
Sayonara
It is always interesting to see the newspaper much before the world sees it. After 90 minutes productive show there
was a relaxing ambience with samosa and tea. The visit ended with few funny chitchats and mandatory clicks. The
students raised their hands to thank faculty who made this visit a productive yet memorable one.

Field Trip: Sangam Community Radio & DDS at Zaheerabad
Faculty Members: Ms. T. Suzan Spurthi
Date: 26th January 2019
Target Audience: BA-2
Memorable visit to learn about Communication and Development
On January 26, Saturday, students of Mass Communication have visited Deccan Development Society (DDS),
Pasthapur, Zaheerabad. Located outside the city, the non-government organization works and aims at uplifting small
farmers. P.Sateesh, co-founder, now Director of DDS gave out a helpful insight on how the organization functions
and what it believes in. The confident women of DDS are currently supporting themselves and 5000 other women of
the farming community. “We have our own market. We try to avoid middlemen and get the best prices for our
farmers”, Sateesh commented. A member of the said society published “darwaaza lo daawakana”, a book about
homemade medicines and remedies. They prefer organic medication, drinks and meals and encourage others to do the
same. They mostly develop millets and crops that solely depend on rainwater. Developing such crops is not only
healthy and cost-effective, but also makes the farmers self-sufficient and self-reliant.
The women of the society have taught themselves how to use a camera and hot to film. They have made numerous
narrative and educative short films that depict their farming techniques and their everyday lives. They have
conveniently named different types of shots in the language that they understand. Top angle, eye level and low angle
shots were named Patel, Sangham and Jeethagadu shots respectively. Some of these talented and independent women
have visited 22 countries to exchange farming ideas and techniques and implement modern techniques along with
traditional ways.
P.Sateesh also talked about the Sangham radio station that is owned privately with no interference of the government.
It broadcasts for two hours every day from 7pm-9pm and is known for its authenticity. They write their own songs
and scripts. They generally discuss the problems and solutions of their everyday lives and home remedies for small
problems.
30
The Deccan Development Society is successful in making its members self-reliant, independent and successful in their
endeavors. This society has proved to be a role model for others to emulate.
