Committee members checked the areas and spoke with the Department of Parks and Recreation and learned that if we want our members to keep their usual picnic spot, then we need to reserve these areas. See map on Page 2 in this newsletter. Date: Time: Place: Sunday, August 9, 2015 7:00 a.m. Set Up 9:30 a.m. Games 11:30 a.m. Lunch 12:30 p.m. Announcements 1:00 p.m. Lucky Number Drawings 3:00 p.m. Clean Up Ala Moana Beach Park, Areas 9 & 11 (same location as last year) Information: Because ice will be delivered to the picnic site for the shave ice machine on the day of the picnic, Earl Tanna is willing to order additional bags of 20 lb. cube ice at $4.50 or 40 lb. cube ice at $8.00 each bag for members. (Saves you from stopping by a store on the way to the picnic.) Contact Earl by July 26 at 358-2372 or via email at [email protected]. The ice will be available at the picnic area by 8:30 a.m., and payment can be made at the membership tent. Anyone willing to share their family tree should bring the information with them. We will announce at the picnic who has their family tree information, and members can visit the different families. Reminders: Bring your family banner. Bring your own bags to take your vegetables home. Plan on arriving early - parking is usually tight. Donations (all types) are greatly appreciated. Don't forget to visit Corinne and Jan at the treasurer's table. Membership dues are still just $20 (cash or check payable to Tanna Jinkai). Absolutely no vehicles should be driven onto the picnic areas. Anyone wanting to help to set up, call Jeannie 395-6003. ******************** 1

NEWSWORTHY ITEMS

> On Sunday, February 22, 2015, an estimated 52 people attended the Annual ShinnenEnkai. It was held at the Shinshu Kyokai Mission Social Hall on South BeretaniaStreet. This is a great location -lots of parking, a spacious hall with stage, and coolbreezes. Everyone enjoyed the food catered by Sugoi Bento and Catering and theBINGO games that followed. There were a lot of prizes. A $10 gift card from Longswas given to members in lieu of the traditional family bag of food and householdstaples. Thank you to Amy Osterman, Gail Hirozawa, Diane Hirozawa and OwenOshima who donated prizes, Reynold Tanimoto who brought his home-grown limes,and to the many people who brought delicious desserts. There was so much that

everyone took some home. Many thanks to everyone who stayed and help clean up.It was quicker because you lent a hand.

~ Congratulations to Henry Ishida {Hirozawa Family), who was one of three WorldWar" veterans who received France's Legion of Honor medal and was bestowed withthe rank of knight in June. Mr. Ishida said he is accepting the medal in memory of hisfriends. Read the entire article on the Tanna Jinkai website.

~ Congratulations to the Uyeda Shoe Store in Moiliili, who celebrated their100th Birthday in February 2015. The owner of the store is Claire Takashima (UyedaFamily), granddaughter of founder Saijiro Uyeda. The store is well known for its greatcustomer service. ~ Congratulations to Wayne Tanna (Tanna Family) who is the Faculty Coach for theChaminade's School of Business and Communications team. The ChaminadeUniversity business students placed first in an international competition on businessethics and won a $1,000 scholarship for the school. ~ Congratulations to Jordan and Cara Odo (Odo Family) who foundedThe Jordan & Cara Odo Scholarship Foundation in August 2014. They created this501 (c){3) nonprofit to encourage Hawaii's youth to continue their education anddevelop them into leaders. The Foundation recognized its first scholarship recipient,Evelyn Chow, at its Scholarship Fundraising Luncheon on May 24, 2015.Check out their website at http://odoscholarship.weebly.com

~ Congratulations to Pat and Wendy Odo's (Odo Family) children. Tara-Iyn receivedher Bachelor of Science in Nursing and also won the prestigious Daisy-in- TrainingAward, selected by the faculty of the nursing school at UH. Sean received hisBachelor of Arts and Sciences in Chemistry and a Minor in Business Administration(Cum Laude) from Creighton University. Sean will attend Creighton Dental School inthe fall.

~ Our sincere condolences to Aiko Odo and her family on the passing of her husband,George, in December 2014.
