EDITORIAL BY THE SECRETARY GENERAL

The American William Nordhaus and Paul Romer were awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize for the economy. The motivation for the Prize was the studies on integration to microeconomic analysis of the effect of climate change and technological innovation. Both researchers developed methods to combine some of the most important and urgent challenges: combining long-term sustainable development of the global economy with increased wellness of the human population. The research of Nordahus shows that the most effective remedy to solve the problems caused by greenhouse gas emissions is the pattern of a global carbon tax uniformly imposed on all countries. Romer showed how the economic forces govern the willingness of companies to innovate and produce new ideas, a model known as “endogenous growth theory”. In particular he triggered the dialogue between different scientific communities and, following the dictates of open science, has created an open source model, which every scholar can download from his website, test and develop. Romer made it clear how to incorporate technical progress and the accumulation of knowledge into economic models. And he did so by formalizing a simple intuition: that for which the most important and demanding phase of innovation is the conception of the idea, while its application is not expensive. Romer’s studies, besides their importance in economy, show that the technological progress is indispensable in economic development. And that makes evident for everyone what we, as animal scientists strongly believe: that the development of our science, as part of technology, is fundamental for economic development. We can also notice that the historical EAAP strategy of dialoguing between different scientific sectors, in our case between different areas of animal science, is the winning option to develop economies. Even better if is facilitated through a kind of open

source model.

with industries on several levels. Therefore, we are looking for motivated persons to broaden the staff dedicated to interacting with industries for:

1. Increasing the cooperation between industries and EAAP and animal scientists, 2. Supporting the inclusion of industries in EU supported projects,3. Organizing Academy Workshops (organized jointly by EAAP and a dedicated industry),4. Sponsoring activities and much more.

The endeavours are paid accordingly with the obtained results. If you are interested please send an email to [email protected], more details will be given. If you are not directly interested but you know someone who could be, please show him/her this offer.

EAAP People PortraitBernard Esmein

Since he is retired in January 2017 Bernard Esmein (born in 1949) has joined EAAP’s ASSET team, which deals with the dissemination of scientific results in animal science and European research projects. In the team at the moment he follows two EU research projects: SMARTCOW (an Infrastructure project which has begun in February 2018 and concerns the integration of cattle experimental

Larsen at al.Livestock Farming Systems Study Commission: “Scandinavian beef production models explored on efficiency on producing human edible protein”, C. Swensson et al.Horse Study Commission: “Genetic and phenotype variation of Croatian Posavina horse”, A. Ivanković et al.

Jean-Francois Hocquette is the new President of the Cattle Study Commission

At last Dubrovnik meeting, the Council proposed to the General Assembly to elect Jean-Francois Hocquette as the new President of the Cattle Study Commission and just recently, the EAAP country members endorsed this election.

He has been a research scientist at INRA (the French National Institute of Agricultural Research) since 1991. His research interest mainly concerns muscle biology as relevant to muscle growth and beef eating quality. In 2014, Dr Hocquette organized the French Meat R&D congress (240 people). Jean-Francois is an active member of the French-Chinese Centre on beef production and, what we appreciate the most, he has always been strongly involved in the activities of the EAAP (European Association for Animal Production), as participant to many events, chair of sessions, member of the Cattle Study Commission and chair of the Cattle Network working group. We all believe that he will guide this Commission to significant actions.

And given the interest of these debates, Bernard Esmein suggests that EAAP should open a page in EAAP’s Newsletter in which one could publish reports and free opinion columns on the present philosophical discussions on animal nature, and on human nutrition, which are very fundamental. Apart from his activities in the ASSET team of EAAP Bernard Esmein continues to take part in the public debate on philosophical and moral questions: together with his friend René Piniès, Director of the Cultural Centre Joë Bousquet in Carcassonne, he has set up an exhibition on the drawings realized by the survivors of the atomic bomb of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which circulates in France since June 2017. After Carcassonne it has been exhibited at the Archives Nationales in Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, and is presently in Grenoble at the Musée de la Résistance et de la Déportation, until 22nd October 2018. And it will be shown in other places in the future.

From Science and Innovation

Addressing Global Ruminant Agricultural Challenges Through Understanding the Rumen Microbiome: Past, Present, and Future.

The rumen is a complex ecosystem composed of anaerobic bacteria, protozoa, fungi, methanogenic archaea and phages. These microbes interact closely to breakdown plant material that cannot

research infrastructures in Europe), and SMARTER (a new project which begins in November 2018 whose objective is to develop innovative strategies to improve resilience and efficiency related traits in sheep and goats). Bernard has a long experience in European relations in the scientific and academic field:

- From 2006 to 2017 he has worked as a European Senior Officer at INRA headquarters in Paris- Previously from 1998 to 2006 he worked as Attaché for scientific and academic relations for the French Foreign Office, successively at the French embassies in The Netherlands, and in Bulgaria. - From 1996 to 1998, he taught at the Centre Européen Universitaire of Nancy.- And previously from 1994 to 1996 he held a position of Seconded National Expert at the Secretariat of the Committee for Culture, Education, Youth and the Media of the European Parliament in Luxemburg.

But this activity corresponded only to the second part of his working life. Because during the twenty previous years Bernard Esmein has been teaching philosophy. Graduated in 1971 and becoming teacher of philosophy in a permanent post through the Agrégation de Philosophie in 1974, he has taught in Lycée, in IUFM (teacher training institution) in Northern France and Normandy and at the University of Nancy. He became Doctor in 1996, defending a thesis on the construction of a Europe of Culture and Education. There is no contradiction in having been trained in philosophy, and to be working in the animal science field. Since antiquity, philosophy likes to accompany and to continue the scientific developments by its interrogations, this was true in Mathematics in Greece, in Physics in 18th century Europe, and nowadays in Biology1. And there are many bridges between the two fields of Science and Philosophy in our time, especially on the questions that concern the animals. For instance, three French philosophers, well-known in the public, Alain Finkielkraut2, Francis Wolff3 and Florence Burgat4, have recently published brilliant essays on the debates raised during the last thirty years on the relations between man and animal, or the question of the border between humanity and animality.

Greenhouse gas emissions from dung patches in developing countries are ‘likely highly overestimated’ - New report

A new research paper published by scientists of the Mazingira Centre (‘mazingira’ means ‘environment’ in Swahili) of the Nairobi-based International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) reports evidence that greenhouse gas emissions from dung patches in developing countries are ‘likely highly overestimated’ in global livestock emissions estimates. ATF Seminar “BALANCE PRODUCTION / CONSUMPTION Animal farming for Humans’ well-being and planetary health”November 7th, 2018, Brussels, Belgium

It is often communicated in the media and among the general public that European citizens should reduce their consumption of animal products/proteins. Very often, the justification is both based on human health and sustainability point of views (use of resources, impact on climate, environmental footprint, AMR, animal welfare…).

The session would like to engage discussion with farmers, food processors, industries, retailers, nutritionists, scientists, policy-makers and also with the society. The ATF seminar is a follow-up of the ATF-EAAP special session (27th Aug. 2018 – Dubrovnik, Croatia). The most important findings of the session will be discussed with a panel. Register now!
