When you look at this report, you will see how very many of you there are, and how very much you have given. And I say, Hallelujah! Recent years have brought an upsurge of support for our two great schools, as they have climbed once again into the forefront of education—where they rightfully and historically belong.

Your support has powered the capital campaign and the sweeping renovation and expansion of our spaces and places. You have spurred the growth of our endowed scholarships that allow bright students of every ilk to attend and flourish. You have allowed us to pay our wonderfully talented and dedicated faculty something closer to

what they truly deserve. You have brought back the pride our students and families have in belonging to the best school, period.

All this has led to a palpably positive enthusiasm in all those who work and learn here. Our school is a microcosm of our plural, striving world, where people are respected, challenged, supported, tough-loved, and lovingly urged to flourish. Just being here is an education in itself. Students take part in a learning community that runs the way we hope the world will run someday. We staunch pursue happiness with liberty and justice for all.

We lost a very special person, philanthropist, community leader, and alumnus of The Albany Academy this past year – J. Spencer Standish.

Mr. Standish was an incredibly loyal friend to The Albany Academies over many years in so many ways. He provided leadership as an alumnus, trustee, parent, and grandparent and created a vision for the Academy starting with the 175th Anniversary and a major gift to a “Campaign for the Eighties.” Mr. Standish also focused his giving for endowment of faculty chairs and established the Standish Chair of Science.

A new swimming pool was part of the agenda for a “Legacy Campaign” in the 90’s and was made possible by another generous gift from Mr. Standish. It opened in 1994 and was dedicated as the J. Spencer Standish ’42 Natatorium in September of 1998, at the conclusion of the “Legacy Campaign.” A new gymnasium – through the generosity of Mr. Standish – would follow as part of the building of a new athletic facility at Albany Academy for Girls.

Mr. Standish continues to support The Albany Academies still today and he and his family made a $1 Million gift to the “Campaign for the Third Century.” This generosity will help provide the resources necessary to support the Academies into the Third Century.

Our gratitude is extended to the Standish family legacy, Christine Standish ’83 and John Standish ’81, and our heartfelt thanks for your generosity and kindness. His life was about working hard, helping others, and being a good friend to many.

As I reflect back on this past year, I am in awe again of all that was accomplished at The Albany Academies and am reminded of the incredibly dedicated members of our community who helped get us there. With your support of the 2015-16 Annual Fund, the Campaign for the Third Century, Spring Gathering, Legacy of Dreams, Splash! A Taste of the Arts, Reunion Weekend, and the countless ceremonies and celebrations throughout the year, we are able to provide meaningful enrichment opportunities for students, faculty and staff.

The monies raised have already helped to renovate and upgrade our facilities, provided financial assistance to those students who otherwise could not attend the Academies, and assisted with the retention of talented educators who inspire a passion for learning.

Thank you to the many parents, grandparents, alumnae, alumni, students, faculty, and staff for your commitment, both philanthropically and through volunteerism. Your advocacy and support make the Academy experience possible for our bright, exuberant students, and for generations of students to come. The world is a better place because of the men and women educated at Albany Academy for Girls and The Albany Academy.

We hope to have your support again in this academic year as we continue to provide the resources necessary to attract the brightest students, faculty, and staff we can. I look forward to seeing you over the next year and encourage you to call or email me with your comments.
