In restaurants, don’t leave handbags under tables or mobile phones and wallets lying around. Be alert when wearing jewellery or when carrying expensive equipment such as cameras. Obtain a map and plan your route. A police/traffic officer can assist you if you get lost. It is an offence to use a mobile phone while driving, except with a hands-free kit. Always carry your driver’s licence. Official parking guides wear bibs and rely on tips for carrying out their duties. Don’t allow strangers to assist you with ATM transactions. If your card gets stuck, immediately call the help line number provided at the ATM. Report lost passports and visas, without delay, to the police. Your country’s embassy or consulate can be contacted through the Tourist Victim Support Programme. Be alert when walking the streets alone at night. There might be opportunists waiting to take advantage of the unsuspecting traveller. Begging does occur, but a polite refusal is normally a sufficient deterrent. Local care organisations advise against giving money to street children. If you want to help, rather give food or clothes.
