Sedgefield Presbyterian Church Responding gratefully through service in our community, worshipping our Creator and working to alleviate hunger in our neighborhood. February “I am the true vine and my Father is the gardener.” ~John 15:1 Dear Sedgefield Presbyterian Family: Over sixty years ago, people in the Sedgefield community embarked on a hopeful effort the founding of Sedgefield Presbyterian Church. The power and beauty of God’s love has been made manifest through this community, spirits nourished by word and sacrament, suffering relieved, lives given direction and meaning, and enduring friendships formed. By God’s grace, this church has ministered to so many in our community, and I firmly believe that our best days are ahead of us. Now we begin an ambitious effort and ask God to bless our 2018 Capital Campaign. This Capital Campaign will fund the repairs needed to our roof, improvements to our kitchen, and increase our reserves. The improvements to the kitchen will allow us to have our Cooking Matters classes at SPC instead of Hinshaw UMC, create opportunities for Cooking Matter reunions, and expand the opportunity for the Preschool to do cooking demonstrations with our little ones. The kitchen is the heart of a home and is the heart of our ministries. The Session voted at its Nov. 19 th meeting for us to have a capital campaign for $45,000 to cover the cost of both. We are fortunate to have a matching gift of this amount to help us reach this goal. For every dollar given in this 2018 Capital Campaign- up to $45,000, will be matched. To reach this goal, we are asking every church family to make a sacrificial gift. Every bit helps and we need your 2018 commitment. This helps to equip SPC for its ministry and mission in our community. The great news is that a few families have already helped us to get started and we have received promises of $21,000- so we are halfway there. Before you decide on the amount of your gift, please prayerfully consider the generosity that God has shown you and the importance of the mission we have been given. During February a letter and commitment card will be mailed to you and can be returned in the collection plate on Sunday mornings. This is an additional pledge to be given during 2018. This is a lot and the Session wants to hear your questions, encouragement and concerns. We will offer a couple of listening sessions on Sundays (2/18 and 2/25) following Worship. Also, my door is always open if you are unable to attend one of the above times. It is an exciting time and I have to believe that those who led our church so many years ago would be proud. May God make this dream a reality! Sincerely yours in Christ, Kim

5:1

Dear Sedgefield Presbyterian Family:

Over sixty years ago, people in the Sedgefield community embarked on a hopeful effort – the

founding of Sedgefield Presbyterian Church. The power and beauty of God’s love has been

made manifest through this community, spirits nourished by word and sacrament, suffering

relieved, lives given direction and meaning, and enduring friendships formed. By God’s grace,

this church has ministered to so many in our community, and I firmly believe that our best days

are ahead of us.

Now we begin an ambitious effort and ask God to bless our 2018 Capital Campaign. This

Capital Campaign will fund the repairs needed to our roof, improvements to our kitchen, and

increase our reserves. The improvements to the kitchen will allow us to have our Cooking

Matters classes at SPC instead of Hinshaw UMC, create opportunities for Cooking Matter

reunions, and expand the opportunity for the Preschool to do cooking demonstrations with our

little ones. The kitchen is the heart of a home and is the heart of our ministries.

The Session voted at its Nov. 19th meeting for us to have a capital campaign for $45,000 to

cover the cost of both. We are fortunate to have a matching gift of this amount to help us reach

this goal. For every dollar given in this 2018 Capital Campaign- up to $45,000, will be matched.

To reach this goal, we are asking every church family to make a sacrificial gift. Every bit helps

and we need your 2018 commitment. This helps to equip SPC for its ministry and mission in our

community. The great news is that a few families have already helped us to get started and we

have received promises of $21,000- so we are halfway there.

Before you decide on the amount of your gift, please prayerfully consider the generosity that

God has shown you and the importance of the mission we have been given. During February a

letter and commitment card will be mailed to you and can be returned in the collection plate on

Sunday mornings. This is an additional pledge to be given during 2018.

This is a lot and the Session wants to hear your questions, encouragement and concerns.

We will offer a couple of listening sessions on Sundays (2/18 and 2/25) following Worship. Also,

my door is always open if you are unable to attend one of the above times. It is an exciting time

and I have to believe that those who led our church so many years ago would be proud.

May God make this dream a reality!

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Kim

SUNDAY SCHOOL On Sunday, Feb. 25th, Kim will share her recent

experience in Nicaragua during the Sunday School hour. On the other Sundays

in February and March, we will be examining climate change. We began looking

at this issue Sunday, Jan. 28th with Steve Drew, Environmental Liaison on the

Justice and Peacemaking Committee at Guilford Park Presbyterian Church, pre-

senting an overview of “Stewardship of Creation”. On Sunday, Feb. 4th and

Sunday, Feb. 18th he will return to lead a discussion on the documentary:

Years of Living Dangerously- Ice and Brimstone. This documentary takes a look at a NC mega-

church minister’s personal struggle with the idea of climate change and his daughter who challeng-

es his beliefs concerning care for God’s creation. We will learn about and consider environmental

impact, the science, religious beliefs and the PCUSA’s position on this much debated topic. Please

join us for this discussion.

Be on the lookout for information about Confirmation for our young

people. Emails will be sent to parents in the coming week.

Youth will serve at Potter’s House on

February 25, 2018.

Youth Group meets at JPC most

Sundays at 4:30pm. A weekly text

will be sent.

meet emergency assistance needs of individuals

and families in our community. Please remember

your Sunday School offering!

receive cards. Our finance committee has much work ahead of them as they finalize the 2018 budget. It is not too

late to turn in your pledges for 2018. Thank you all for your generous giving.

beginning at 6:00 prior to the Ash Wednesday ser-

vice, Feb. 14th. Please come and join the fellowship.

1)Pajé is working to get the Wi-Fi

extended throughout the Church.

This will allow us to get free

Smart Thermostats from Duke

Energy. These will be able to be

set remotely where you do not

have to come in way early on cold or hot days to set

them manually hours before you need them.

(2)The Heat Pump was not working in the Parlor and

Chip and John called in a Heating and Cooling

Repairman and they got the Emergency Heat working,

but had to order a part to get the heating to work.

(3)Ran the 30 second Emergency Light test which is

required monthly. Once a year a 90 minute test is re-

quired. This was run in October.

SPC Winter Weather Plan

The white stuff has already fallen and created a winter wonderland, so it

only seems appropriate that we talk about our snow plan. If (or when) it

snows and we have to adjust church and programs, please check WFMY

News2, our website and Facebook page for information. Always do

what is best for you and feels safe.

Our prayers go out to Stan and all the family

of Charlene Ashworth, who passed away in

January. Her service will be held at the

church on Sunday, February 11 at 1:00 pm. A

recep(on and fellowship will follow.

The Valentine Challenge

There are a lot of challenges out there, ice-bucket, eating peppers, etc... I want to challenge each of us to send a Valentines Card to someone in the church (and send more than one if you want). We are a church that holds one another in prayer so I thought it would be fun during this season to send a card. I especially want us to remember those who are not physically with us each week. The Benevolence Team wants to

encourage

anyone who

is willing to

continue ad-

vocating for

people who

are struggling with hunger and

poverty. This can be done by calling and/

or emailing and/or writing letters to your

congressional representatives and ex-

pressing your concerns, asking that these

decision makers consider maintaining

and, even enhancing, programs for peo-

ple in need. Our faith communities and

other community agencies cannot possi-

bly take up the slack that would be there

if these programs are cut or eliminated. If

SOUPER BOWL

Don’t forget to contribute to the

Souper Bowl of Caring

Sunday, February 4!

In 1990, a youth group at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Co-

lumbia, SC began this special project after a simple prayer:

“Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful

of those without a bowl of soup to eat.”

Since then, more than $135 million has been raised for local charities

throughout the United States by numerous church youth groups.

Our church has participated since the mid 90’s. Our contributions will

go to Greensboro Urban Ministry so they can purchase greatly needed for

the Food Pantry.

PLEASE GIVE GENEROUSLY ON SUPER BOWL SUNDAY!
