Beaverdam UMC & Rouzie’s Chapel UMC: Two Amazing Churches, One Awesome God

2016 JUNE Issue 5

In God We Trust. Four short words with only twelve letters total. But, those are four very powerful words. They first appeared on United States coins in 1864 and were adopted as our national motto in 1956 by an act of Congress. In recent years they have been at the center of much heated debate in the arena of public opinion.

But the truth is that the United States of America didn’t “coin” the phrase. As long as humans have been in relationship with God, we have needed to place our trust in God. We have needed to realize that our Creator made us for dependence upon God, for reliance in God and for yes, trust, in God. So during the months of June and July we will explore together on Sunday mornings some of the other things we might be tempted to trust in instead: ourselves, money, the church, the government. God uses all of those things – us, our money, our church and our government to bless us and provide for us. But, our trust cannot be in the instruments of God, it must be in GOD.

Isaiah said it beautifully in Isaiah 12:2, “See, God has come to save me. I will trust in Him and not be afraid. The Lord God is my strength and my song; He has given me victory.”

Four words. Life changing way to live.

With transforming hope,

BLESSING BOX Rouzie’s has a Blessing Box to collect gently used men’s clothing and new assorted tolietries that can be given to the men at New Life Ranch.

There is also a need this month for twin sheets and comforters/bed spreads. Many of these men show up at the Ranch without anything to call their own so anything you can contribute would be greatly appreciated.

Keep them coming!

W.H.E.A.T. Our help both with financial donations and food pantry items are needed badly; especially with pasta (any type) and spaghetti sauce. We have done an excellent job in maintaining the

supply of these items needed to meet W.H.E.A.T.’s monthly needs for distribution. Thanks to all for your generosity.

Keep it coming!

UNIQUE MINISTRY We've had a productive May. Along with packing for the food pantries, the group collected used clothing for a local elementary school clothes drive. I love that they are getting many unique ways "to give back". We also received several big donations of personal hygiene products from the community. The word is still getting out about our group. Thank you for all your support.

Our little group has been quite busy! There are already lapaghans and afghans stacking up on our table awaiting future blessings and deliveries. I would like to personally thank all of the devoted, hardworking ladies who have helped to contribute to our wonderful mission. You help to bring the warmth of Christ’s love into the lives of many in need. Thank you for your support. If you would like to join us, our next meeting will be on June 1st at 11:15am. After that we will be taking our summer break and will resume back on Sept. 28th. Any questions? Contact Nancy Parke - (540) 809-5478 or email - [email protected].

Want to join the Wood Ministry? If you would like to help with cutting, splitting, and delivering wood to our Wood Ministry families contact Fredy Calderon at 804-357-5504 or [email protected] or Dick Lear at 703-855-9831, [email protected]. Deliveries are usually made on Wednesday and/or Saturday mornings. A couple hours of your time each week could make a huge difference to one of our family’s lives. Thanks in advance for supporting our Wood Ministry with your time & talent, trucks, chainsaws, gas & oil, donations and the camaraderie and fellowship you provide to our group.

The WHWM Annual Chicken BBQ dinner on May 21st was a huge success. Despite heavy rain in the morning when the cooks were lighting the fires and putting on the first round of chickens, we had a great turn out and a lot of cameraderie with good friends and family. We prepared approximately 300 BBQ Chicken dinners for eat-in or take-out. The rain stopped an hour before we started serving. Fun was had by all.

After taking out our expenses dinner sales and donations netted the Wood Ministry over $2,600.00 to put toward our Chimney Sweep program to clean, inspect, and repair (if necessary) chimneys of the families we support. THANK YOU for your GENEROUS donations, hope you enjoyed the dinner. A big THANK YOU to the Wood Ministry families who donated cakes for dessert. DELICIOUS.

Our Chimney Sweep Program is in full swing. May was a cold and rainy month, which slowed our start down a bit. We are still getting requests for wood because of our cool spring. We will be cleaning, inspecting, and repairing (if necessary) chimneys during the month of June for those families that did not get the chimney sweep service last fall, approximately 33 families. The $2,600.00 proceeds from the BBQ chicken dinner and $3,000.00 grant from Rappahannock Electric Co-Op will go a long way to complete the program.

The Friendship Book

He’d always fancied writing a book, but mostly he just talked about it at the kitchen table. Then one day his wife had heard enough.

“Look, I don’t want to offend you,” she said, “but you’ve been saying that for 25 years. If you were going to write a book, you’d have done it. You’re never going to do it now. Old vet of 50 don’t write books.” So, he bought a few reams of paper and started scribbling.

Alf Wight, who became a worldwide bestseller as James Herriot, should be proof for us all that it’s never too late to follow a dream!

Ideas for Honoring Dad — from the www.FamilyLife.com web site 1. Dad works hard during the week, so he would

love to have a massage—personal or professional. But if you give the massage yourself, make sure you know how to give a good one!

2. They don't say "the way to a man's heart is through his stomach" for nothing. Cook Dad an elaborate dinner this year with all his favorite dishes. Make sure you do the grocery shopping in plenty of time in order to do the cooking.

3. Every father has a legacy. Make a shadow box filled with personal items and pictures of your dad, his father, and his two grandfathers if you can find them. Items like pocket watches, letters, and old photos give it some nostalgia.

4. Plan a daddy/daughter date initiated and planned by the daughter. If your daughter isn't old enough to plan a date with dad, make one for her. She can help you bake cookies or cook a frozen pizza and then have a tea party in the backyard or go to a movie. (Of course dad has to drive!)

5. If your dad is older, go see him just to listen to his stories. Plan to sit on the porch with a glass of tea and really communicate. These are the stories that you will be able to pass down to your children one day.

6. If your dad is the outdoorsy type, rent a boat and take him fishing for the day. You could even pack a picnic so you don't have to leave the boat. Make sure you take plenty of sunscreen and a camera, just in case dad catches a big one!

7. Grandfathers love to get things from the grandkids, and homemade gifts are even better. Buy a solid color tie from a department store and have the kids make handprints all over it with paint. Grandfather will love the gift and the kids will have a great time making it.

8. If you're willing to make a sacrifice this year, cash in some frequent flyer miles this year and send your dad and mom on a trip to the town where he grew up. If he lives in the town where he grew up, send him somewhere he's never been before.

9. Buy a children's book about daddies that has lots of pictures and few words. When you see a picture, phrase, or story that reminds you of a memory of your dad, handwrite them on that page. Include things you learned from him and his character.

10.Surprise your dad with a nicely framed professional photo of the kids. It can be a large picture to put over the mantel or a smaller one to put on his desk at the office. Either way, he'll be even more proud to show off those smiling faces.

Daddy’s Sermons — by Yvonne Blake

Come, Darling. Come to Daddy. Walk to me. You can do it. "He hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace" Trust me, Darling. Jump. I won't drop you. The water isn't very deep. Trust me. "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding." You want to help me? Well, pretty soon I'll need somebody to hold the end of the board steady while I cut it. So, don't go far. Listen for my call. "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." Sh-sh. I'm here, Darling. Don't be afraid. The lights will come back on soon. I'll stay with you until then. How about I tell you a story? "He will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee; fear not, neither be dismayed." Once upon a time, there was a man with a hundred sheep, but one sheep "The Lord is my shepherd" "Hello, Mrs. Chadbourne? It's me, Pastor Phillips. I'd like you to meet my daughter. "Pure religion and undefiled before God is this; to visit the fatherless and the widows in their affliction" Would you like to take a walk with me and watch the meteor shower? Oh yes, I saw it! Look, there's another one. Just think... God knows the name of each one of them. "Be still and know that I am God." "The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms" I know what you're thinking, Darling. You wish you could have a new bike, too. I don't know if we can afford it. You ought to be thankful for the one you have. "But godliness with contentment is great gain." I made something for you. Open your eyes! What do you think? I made it to look just like Grammy's house. You really like it? I thought you would. "Now unto Him that is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.." Young lady, don't let me hear you talking to your mother like that again! You go apologize to her. You are just getting a little too big for your britches! "Honor thy father and thy mother that thy days may be long upon the earth" You don't need to do everything that other kids are doing. I don't care what other families do; you are part of this family. "I will be their God and they shall be my people; wherefore come out from among them and be ye different" I'm sorry, but you disobeyed me. This hurts me as much as it hurts you. You are my daughter. I love you. "For whom he Lord loveth, he chasteneth" Ask your mother if there is enough spaghetti for one more? I found this fellow hanging around, and he looked hungry. "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." Wake up! It's a beautiful day! The bus will be here in a half hour. Have a good day, Darling, and look for opportunities to serve the Lord. "This is the day that the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it." No, I don't want you working today. It's Sunday, the Lord's Day. You'll just have to tell your manager to change your schedule. "Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy" I'm proud of you, Darling. You did the right thing, even though it was hard. "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily unto the Lord and not unto men." Where have the years gone? It seems like you were my baby girl just yesterday. Now, you're a young woman and leaving home. "But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ." I love you, Darling. I always will, no matter where you go or what you do. You are my daughter. I love you. "Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love"

Hi Kids, Did you remember to pray for those that served in the armed forces and the families that lost loved ones in the services? It means so much to them and I know God listens to all prayers.

Matthew 11:15, "He who has ears, let him hear".

Last Friday, I truly witnessed or was part of a miracle. I showed up for my time at Retreat Hospital and the first words I heard were, "we have a situation in room 555. Do you know sign language?"

At first, I thought they were kidding and I said, "I have been reading and practicing sign language. Also, Penny and I just saw a movie with sign language in it." Then I was told to go to room 555 and help until an interpreter shows up at 11. I then realized they were serious. I said a silent prayer and went in.

God heard me, for what I had practiced came stumbling out. There were two of the patient's friends in there. I introduced myself and asked if they wanted something to drink.

Laney, the nurse for the patent, came in and between what she had learned in two hours time and the little I knew was enough until 11. I forgot to mention that with my first attempt, both the lady and the man gave me the best hug I could have had.

Yes guys, God answers prayers.

Until next month stay cool. Love,
