Fram! Fram!

Attending a Norwegian college in the Midwest expands your vocabu-lary a little. In my first year my friends spoke with great excitementabout lutefisk and lefse being served in the dining hall (choose lefse

– it smells better). At Christmas time we would sing “Jeg Er Saa GladHver Julekveld” otherwise known as “I am so glad on Christmas Eve.” Mycollege’s hymn starts with “Fram! Fram! St. Olaf!” (pronounced Frah-m)which means Forward! Forward! That phrase often pops into my mindnow as I look at different organizations which I am affiliated. The endlessmission of pushing forward in a positive and constructive way is one everyorganization faces.

Four years ago when I was elected Sub-Dean, I sat down one Julyevening and brainstormed the needs and possibilities of our Chapter. Imarvel at much of that list we were able to accomplish during that timeframe. The number of volunteers it takes to make this organization moveforward is huge! And yet, with many hands involved, we are able to dogreat things to both support our membership and promote organ andchoral music to the Philadelphia Metropolitan area. To all of you who giveyour time, talent and treasure to the work of the Chapter, thank you. Itwould not happen without your support.

June 13th marks our Fifth Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ Day at theKimmel Center. The growth of this outreach program is incredible and ourreach into the community is deepening. Please continue to promote thisevent to your choirs and friends. A simple plug from you can be the differ-ence of them venturing out to experience fantastic music featuring theorgan in our city’s concert hall. And it is Free and Non-Ticketed. Spreadthe word!

As our leadership changes this summer, I encourage Chapter members tocontinue to find ways to get connected in the activities of the Chapter. Forme, the friendships I have developed over the years of my Chapterinvolvement have been invaluable. It takes time and juggling of life’sobligations but seeing a familiar face at a conference or lunch with a col-league, reminds me of the ways my years in the Chapter have been ablessing. See you at future events as we ever push forward the craft thatwe love to which we give so much.

Fram! Fram!

Pax,Tim

Have you considered volunteering for our chapter? (And we are ALL volunteers!)

Loretta Hartnett, former and long term volunteer coordinator, had thesewise words to offer:

“The vitality and strength of any organization is the activeparticipation of its members!”

A few possibilities:• Letting us know if you would be willing to run for Executive Committee or otheroffice• Assisting with mailings – Katherine Reier heads the Crescendo Mail Bees andwould most certainly welcome you. We also have other mailings periodically.• Hosting or playing a Tuesday Noon Recital - you can even do this jointly withanother member (for instance by including vocal or solo instrumental music toaccompany)• Helping with chapter events – serving as greeter/usher/host; co-sponsoring anevent between your church/synagogue/other professional organization and thechapter• Making phone calls – an occasional need• Writing an article or submitting photos to Crescendo• Encouraging membership!!

In October we will once again come to Carmel Presbyterian Church in Glenside, where host Abby Palmisanohas brought large audiences to hear the concerts in past seasons. The organ there is a 3 manual Austin, 1928,rebuilt over the years with recent additions by Walker.

November will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ardmore. The host there is yours truly, and the organ is a3-37 Schantz from 1959, all under expression, playing into a resonant room. In the balcony is a 2-12 PatMurphy installed in 2005. The organ has been fully restored in recent years. Sowerby, Karg-Elert and Howellssound good on this organ.

December and January plans are underway, but haven’t been announced yet.

In February we will come back to Abington Presbyterian Church, where the large 1969 Moller organ hasbeen recently restored and enlarged. AGO hosts there are John Sall and Ethel Geist.

March will see us back on the Main Line, at the magnificent Reiger at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. Thisorgan is a wonderful instrument for French music from De Grigny to Dupre and beyond.

April will see us back at the Moller/Murphy organ at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Roxborough. Host WesleyParrott even fed us lunch last year. This instrument is remarkably versatile for its size.

May is almost finalized, but not ready to announce.

2015-16 Tuesday Noon Recital Season in the Planning Stages

At the time of this writing, not every venue has been finalized, but we can tell you the following:

If you have not played a Tuesday Noon recital recently, please consider it. You can reach me at my address inCrescendo, or [email protected]. While I cannot tell you what motivates other players to play, I cantell you why I do:

1) It gives me a chance to share my love of the organ with an audience2) It makes me a little more diligent about practicing3) It gives me an opportunity to play music that does not fit into a worship service4) It allows me to learn new music and gives me a chance to play it

Even if you don’t consider yourself a great recitalist, perhaps one of the criteria above will help you find your ownreason for playing this season. If so, let’s talk!

Tim has had a big role in helping tomake this special, and his work at the beginning ofthe program with the Children's Program isabsolutely delightful.

If you didn't know Tim already, he has been in ourarea since 2000. He is from Landenberg, PA, andhas a BA in Church Music from St. Olaf College inMinnesota. Heaccompanies the Chancel Choir and the WayneOratorio Society rehearsals, and shares worshipservice playing with Jeff Fowler. He also directs theVillanova Singers, the university's men's choralensemble. Tim will be moving into the role ofMinister of Music upon the retirement of ouresteemed colleague and former AGO Dean, JeffFowler.
