Coldwell Banker Bain real estate broker Bliss Ong has formed a unique partnership with the Redmond Historical Society in an effort to help raise money for the Society. Coldwell Banker Bain will give 10% back to support the Redmond Historical Society when you or someone you refer is looking to buy or sell property. Coldwell Banker Bain established its Community Partnership program as a way for the company and its brokers to give back to the organizations that are committed to the welfare of our communities, For more information, contact Bliss Ong at 425.445.8006, or call the Society Office at 425.885.2919.

Facilities Update: In October, we updated our membership on the progress of the facilities question (October 2017 President’s Column). The Society has a commitment for temporary office and archive workroom space in the Vision 5 building. We are looking at a move in March 2018. We anticipate a lease document soon.

inviTATion To The FundRAiseRBy Joe Townsend

Earlier this year, I wrote about the 86 volunteers who bring the Redmond Historical Society programs, facilities, and events to the community. They represent a wealth of talent and invaluable, dedicated time devoted to discovering, recovering, collecting, and sharing Redmond’s history. This, event, our first annual fundraising dinner and auction, is a fun way to bring the community together and provide another vital resource to the Society—that is, operating funds. Nonprofit organizations do not thrive on volunteer service alone. We encourage you to come join in the fun and join in the funding.

We asked the community to save the date, January 13, for this event. Again, hard-working volunteers are putting this fundraiser together. Come and show them how much you appreciate their work. The event

is being held at the RedmondSenior Center, a nice venue, and represents the Society’s investment in the community to host an entertaining evening, with a purpose. Proceeds from the auction will go toward supporting our organization’s annual budget and the costs associated with our pending move in March to the Vision 5 building in Redmond (Oct 2017 newsletter). We’ve already accomplished Part I of the move, strictly with volunteers. But the bulk of the artifacts, archives, and furnishings are a much bigger challenge.

Our fundraiser will include live and silent auctions, a catered dinner with happy hour, costume contest, photo booth, a trivia game, and prizes. The live auction will include a “trip of a lifetime,” a stay at the Zulu Nyala private game reserve in Africa, and a water sports gear and party offering on Radar Lake, outside Redmond.

Bring a friend, bring additional friends by buying a table for 8. Register on our website or use the form in this newsletter. I’ll be looking for all of you at the Redmond Historical Society Fundraising Auction and Dinner.

Let me be the next to invite you to Our Fundraising Auction and Dinner!

The Redmond Historical Society is reaching out to you, our partners in the community, to support our 2018 fundraising campaign. On Saturday, January 13, we host our 1st Annual Dinner/Auction Fundraiser at the Redmond Senior Center. Proceeds from the auction go toward supporting our annual budget and costs associated with the move in March to the Vision 5 building in Redmond. Vision 5 will be our temporary home while the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center is being remodeled.

The Society was founded in 1999 by a small group of citizens passionate about local history. The first meeting was held on May 29 at the city library with 23 supporters in attendance. It was a time of tremendous growth in and around Redmond, yet no one was documenting our heritage, some of which was disappearing.

Our first action was to lobby for, and secure, city landmark status for 16 structures. Shortly after, we were a partner in creating the Historic Downtown Kiosk

become A sPonsoR AT socieTy’s FiRsT AnnuAl FundRAiseR

at Leary Way NE and Redmond Way; moved into our current office at the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center; and recently updated our Walking Tour brochure. Since then we have undertaken many initiatives, resulting in an extensive collection of historical documents, photographs, artifacts, and oral histories. Our digital archive of photographs and scanned data comprises over 30,000 records.

We have grown into one of the largest, most active civic organizations in the city. Over the years, the Society has hosted a variety of engaging speakers at its monthly Saturday membership programs. We continue this tradition with the Saturday Speaker Series.

Our goal is to raise $50,000 to balance our 2018 budget. We invite you to participate as a Sponsor. Note the recognition levels offered on page 5. To sign up as a Sponsor or for more information, email John Oftebro at [email protected], or call 206-819-3075.

The oTheRs who helPed mAke Redmond By Tom Hitzroth

This article is a tribute to the everyday men and women who lived in Redmond, worked here, and left the scene without any notable record of their contributions to Redmond. History and historians tend to remember the more iconic names of major businesses, community leaders, or land claimants, the “founding fathers” so to speak. Of course, these people did significant things to put Redmond on the map, but like the ladies in the November article, they did not do it alone. Here is a sampling of a few folks who, like so many others, helped keep Redmond going through thick and thin. These are taken from early Redmond census records in the 1900–1920 time frame:

Edith Bagley, a maid at the Hotel Redmond John Taylor, a shingle weaver at Weber’s MillHelen Smith, a stenographer in townCharles Koontz, a janitor at the Redmond schoolMarada Stitham, operated an iron in a local laundryAlexander Forsyth, a bookkeeper at a sawmillGeorge McMillan, a laborer on county roads in the areaRudolph Westby, a letter carrierChristian Durkoop, a blacksmith

The list goes on. These were ordinary people, doing ordinary things, who

kept Redmond’s daily life running successfully. The maid working behind the scenes kept the hotel running. The bookkeeper at the mill, critical to the success of the mill, contributed to the economic success of the town; the laborer on the county roads, who maintained the community’s transportation systems; the blacksmith, who kept the horses shod, repaired the harnesses, made or repaired tools, and repaired wagons. Because of their hard work, their legacy is that Redmond grew to be a leader on the Eastside landscape.
