Dear members and guests,

It is a great pleasure and honour for me inviting you to the upcoming fourth biennial congress of the European Society of Endocrine Surgeons in Vienna. Although relatively young compared to other national and international surgical societies the ESES very fast emerged to be the leading voice of endocrine surgery in Europe. From its beginning the Society had tight relationships with the Division of Endocrine Surgery (DES) of the Section of Surgery of the UEMS. The Society together with the DES therefore appreciate very much offering not only modern structures and facilities for active participation in these organizations but also congresses and workshops, and the DES examination for specialization in endocrine surgery combined with the congress.

This year’s congress again will be a highlight in European endocrine surgery. Bruno Niederle and his staff joined by the executive committee selected the most interesting papers for presentation out of more then 200 submitted abstracts. Originality and appropriate geographical distribution have been major criteria for abstract selection. The scientific program covers all areas of modern endocrine surgery. Four of the scientific sessions should be specifically mentioned (in order to the time table): the educational session on neuroendocrine tumors of the small intestine, the “Charles Proye Lecture” given by Paolo Miccoli (Pisa), the “Key Lecture” given by Edward M. Brown (Boston), and the session on Endocrine Surgery in Europe with presentations given by Marcin Barczynski (Krakow) and Michael Brauckhoff (Bergen).

The local organizers headed by Bruno Niederle did a fantastic job for this congress including perfect organization, selecting a wonderful venue, and preparing a friendly atmosphere – as typical for the „friendly endocrine surgeons“. I am convinced you will expect a fascinating meeting and will have an overall memorable time in Vienna.

On behalf of the “Austrian Society of Surgery” I warmly welcome the “European Society of Endocrine Surgeons” to the 4th Biannual Congress in Vienna.It is an honour for Austria that ESES has chosen Vienna as the congress venue, and this

choice certainly also reflects the great appreciation of the Society for the major contribution that Austrian endocrine surgeons have made in the last decades to develop endocrine surgery to a highly specialised discipline within the framework of general surgery. This congress offers an exciting scientific programme embedded in the exciting environment of the beautiful city of Vienna. I wish all delegates a very productive meeting for the progress of endocrine surgery, and also a few hours of relaxation in this great city with its rich cultural heritage.

Welcome to Vienna for the 4th Biennial Congress of the European Society of Endocrine Surgeons, a meeting where dedicated researchers will cooperate with established clinicians in updating our knowledge in the multifaceted field of endocrine surgery.Vienna is a well known place in connection with endocrinology. The Second Medical School of Vienna from the second half of the 19th century up to the first third of the 20th century and its results were initiated by outstanding and charismatic personalities such as: Billroth, Eiselsberg and Mandl.During the last 60 years Austria has developed with tremendous effort an almost perfect health care system according to the international standards. Even in science and research our small country is constantly present. One of the visible symbols was the foundation of the Austrian Society for Surgery 52 years ago. Once again charismatic persons were the trailblazers for the new period.Current representatives are the local organizers, Bruno Niederle and his team, who did a great job together with the integrated and participating Austrian endocrine surgeons.Vienna’s charming atmosphere, its historical and cultural importance offer ideal prerequisits for international meetings and promise a pleasant stay for all participants and guests.We look forward to seeing you in Vienna

Welcome!

After the “Founding Conference” in 2003, the very successful “Second Workshop: Update in Endocrine Surgery - Endoscopic Surgery in Neuroendocrine Pancreatic Tumours” ESES is guest in Vienna for the third time.It is a great privilege for the “Local Organising Committee” to welcome the members of ESES and all participants to the “4th Biennial Congress”! We selected the “The Imperial Riding School Vienna - A Renaissance Hotel” as the congress venue. This exquisite historic hotel was built in 1850 and was used by Emperor Franz Josef I as an imperial military riding school, where the cavalry was perfectly trained for their assignments.

All participants of the “4th Biennial Congress” may expect an exciting scientific programme and interesting discussions.A total of 231 abstracts were submitted from all parts of the world. After a first selection 217 blinded abstracts were reviewed by members of the “Executive Committee” and of the “Research and Education Committee”. The 40 best scored abstracts (throughout all topics of “Endocrine Surgery”) were accepted for “oral” or “short oral presentation”. Furthermore 37 “High Scored Posters” and 137 “Posters” will be presented and partly discussed. The “Local Organising Committee” awards prizes for the “Best Oral Communication” (jury members: the “Austrian National Delegates”) and for the “Best Experimental and Clinical Posters” (jury members: members of the “National Delegate Council”). The prizes will be awarded in the Closing Session on Saturday. The General Hospital, which was opened in 1784, gradually became, together with its various clinics, at the beginning of the last century the most important centre for medical research in Vienna. One famous member of the “Vienna Medical School” was Emil Zuckerkandl, who died in Vienna 100 years ago (May 28, 1910). The “Historical Lecture” during the “Opening Ceremony” will summarise the background of this famous Hungarian-Austrian anatomist and of his time. Endocrine surgeons are well aware of the importance of the “Organ of Zuckerkandl” and of the “Zuckerkandl‘s tuberculum”.The “Evening Event” leads to the “First Court”, the former heart of the famous “Old General Hospital”. We cordially invite all participants to join us at the “Stiegl Ambulanz”, the former outpatients´ department of the famous “Department of Surgery I”, which was lead by Anton Freiherr von Eiselsberg, in order to enjoy a comfortable evening meeting to meet old friends and make new ones.Enjoy the congress! Pianist: Thomas Bachleitner-Hofmann was born in 1975 in Vienna, Austria. He began his first piano lessons at the age of six. Between 1985 and 1998 Bachleitner-Hofmann studied piano at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with Elisabeth Dvorak-Weisshaar, Viktor Teuflmayr and Carlos Rivera. He has won several prizes at national and international piano competitions, including the 3rd prize at “The Stravinsky Awards” (USA) in 1993.Along with his musical career Bachleitner-Hofmann attended medical school at the University of Vienna and received his training in general surgery at the Department of Surgery of the Medical University of Vienna. In 2006, he was granted a two-year research fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York (USA), returning to Vienna in 2008.His personal and professional love for music remains with him during his continuing medical career as a surgical oncologist. Of particular significance to Bachleitner-Hofmann are the ongoing charity concerts he performs for cancer patients in Vienna.

The Imperial Riding School Vienna, A Renaissance HotelBuilt in 1850 and used by Emperor Franz Josef I, and as a First Class Hotel the Renaissance Penta Vienna Hotel offers high quality comfort and a warm atmosphere for all guests.This exquisite historic Hotel was an imperial military riding school, where cavalries were trained perfectly.In the beginning of the 19th century, when this purpose was not necessary any more, the building was converted into the “EOS Lichtspieltheater”, Vienna’s largest cinema at that time. In 1988 the ground breaking ceremony was celebrated. The newly built hotel opened on 1 April 1990 as Penta Hotel Wien. “Penta” has been a hotel chain of initially five (penta = five in Greek) airlines. Later it was operated only by Lufthansa. Today’s Hospitality Desk used to be a Lufthansa check in counter where guests could check in their luggage right at the hotel.In June 1993 Lufthansa sold its hotel chain “Penta” to Renaissance & Ramada International and this hotel was renamed into Renaissance Penta Vienna Hotel. In May 1997 Marriott International became the new operator. In April 2001, with the opening of the newly built Imperial Club, the hotel was renamed again and got its actual name, reminding of the imperial history.During the planning and construction of the hotel utmost care was taken to preserve the heritage and style of the original architecture. The entrance way and the restaurant Borromäus were originally the horse stables. The imperial riding hall was converted into our Renaissance Deluxe rooms for our guests. Our themed conference and banquet rooms are all named after classical riding terminologies such as „Pirouette“, „Piaffe“, „Levade“, „Courbette“ etc. which riders used in battle to distract the enemy.Additionally, the Horse restrainer monument, which at one time graced the roof of the Riding Hall, has been relocated into a place of reflection in the hotels garden.Two large Equestrian paintings on the wall of the main staircase of Count Starhemberg and the Duke of Lorraine by C. Historic Streetcar Ride We will take you on your own private sightseeing tour through Vienna over the Ringstrasse,

past the State Opera, the famous Secession, the Karlsplatz and many more magnificent buildings right to the Old General Hospital Vienna, A ride with a historic tram, built in the nineteen-twenties, offers a unique way to see Vienna’s historical buildings.

Your guided tour lasts for about one hour and starts at the congress venue - The Imperial Riding School Vienna - A Renaissance Hotel.

From there it continues to the Ring Boulevard where the tram passes many famous buildings, like Urania (a observatory in art nouveau which was established by emperor Franz Joseph and which still works), the Austrian Museum of Modern Art, the Stadtpark with the Johann-Strauss-Monument and the Kursalon. Then we leave the Ring Boulevard for a side step to Karlsplatz showing you St. Charles Church (Karlskirche), Künstlerhaus, Musikverein (from where each New Year’s Eve the famous concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is broadcasted around the world) and the Museum of Viennese History. The Campus of the University of ViennaThe Campus of the University of Vienna is a very special place: because of its history as the former General Hospital, because of its architecture and its overall concept. Its neighbourhood benefits from the successful vitalisation of a historically important building and from the integration of facilities of the University of Vienna with local shops and businesses.The transformation of the former General Hospital to the Campus of the University of Vienna at the end of the 20th century is not the first rededication in the history of this building complex in the „Alservorstadt“. Emperor Joseph II. (1765-1790) remodelled the large poor house which had existed since the 17th century into a General Hospital along the lines of the Hôtel Dieu in Paris. The inscription at the main entrance from the Alserstraße documents the Josephin transformation: „Saluti et solatio aegrorum – Josephus II. Augustus Anno MDCCLXXXIV“ (to save and to comfort the sick - Emperor Joseph II. 1784). The large hospital (today‘s courts 1-7) was planned by the court‘s master builder Joseph Gerl (1734-1798) under the direction of the court‘s doctor and first director of the General Hospital, Joseph von Quarin (1733–1814). It was opened on August 16th, 1784. The new hospital also included a birthing house, a foundling hospital and the “madhouse” built in 1783 according to the design of Isidor Canevale (commonly known as „mad tower“ or „Emperor Joseph‘s ring cake“); today it houses the Federal Pathologic-Anatomical Museum).The buildings of the courtyards 8 and 9 are part of the expansions under Emperor Francis I. (1804-1835), as the inscription over the gate to the Garnisongasse indicates: „Saluti et solatio aegrorum Franciscus I. MDCCCXXXIV“ (to save and to comfort the sick Francis I. 1834). In research, the General Hospital played an important role. Personalities of international standing of the Vienna Medical School, from Ignaz Semmelweis (1818-1865), Theodor Billroth (1829-1894) to Karl Landsteiner (1868-1943) worked here.

Congress Information

AbstractsAll abstracts which were selected for Oral Presentations during the ESES 2010 congress were published in the Langenbeck‘s Archives of Surgery (LAS), Volume 395, Number 4, April 2010 , pages 471 - 485. All abstracts which were selected for Poster Presentations, as well as the abstracts for the Educational Clinical Lecture, the Charles Proye Lecture and the Key Lecture were published in the congress abstract book.

BadgesParticipants will receive their name badges from the conference registration desk. Since only registered participants will be permitted to attend scientific sessions, the exhibition and poster areas, you are kindly asked to wear your badge when entering the congress venue. Please note that admission to scientific sessions is strictly restricted to participants wearing their badges. Exhibitors without a full congress registration and accompanying persons are not entitled to attend the scientific sessions. Lost badges can be replaced at the registration desk. However, a handling fee will be charged.

Cash BarSnacks and drinks may be purchased at the hotel bar on the ground floor during congress hours.

Certificate of AttendanceConfirmations of attendance will be issued at the registration desk.

CME Credits The ESES has applied for credits at the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Education Institution of the UEMS. As per date of printing the result is still pending. The number of credits will figure on the respective confirmation, which will be sent to you after the meeting. The rules of the EACCME state that participants are kindly asked to fill in the feedback form included in the conference bag. It can be returned to the registration desk.

Coffee BreaksRefreshments will be served free of charge to participants wearing name badges in the exhibition area.

Lunch BoxYou will receive a lunch box before the start of the Lunch Symposium in the exhibition area which you can take with you to the lecture room.

Bank services - Money mattersBanks are open from 8.30 – 12:30 and from 13:30 – 15:00, Monday to Friday. Some banks are also open on Thursday afternoons until 17:30 hrs. Cash machines (ATMs), which accept all major international bank cards, are available throughout the city. The currency of Austria is the Euro (€). Major credit cards are widely accepted, but please always check beforehand.

GSM cell phone roaming GSM cell/mobile phone roaming is available for all major international providers. It is advisable to ask your provider beforehand which roaming company in Austria offers the cheapest tariffs.

InsuranceIn registering for the ESES 2010 participants agree that neither the organising committee nor the congress office assume any liability whatsoever. Participants are requested to make their own arrangements for health and travel insurance.

Medical careThe Austrian National Health Service may be used by all persons from European Union countries who have the E111 Form (EHIC - Electronic Health Insurance Card). This form/card should be obtained at the health service or post office of the visitor‘s home country before travelling to Austria. It is advisable for participants from countries outside the European Union to take out medical insurance before reaching Austria, since they will be charged for access to the national health system.

General Information

PharmaciesMedicines that do not require a medical prescription may be purchased over the counter. If you need advice, do not hesitate to ask the pharmacist. If you usually take medication, it is advisable to bring a sufficient amount with you for your trip. There are duty pharmacies open 24 hours a day. Outside each pharmacy there is a list of the nearest duty pharmacies, or you may ask at your hotel reception for more information.

ShopsShops in Vienna are generally open between 09.00 and 18.00 hrs Mon-Fri, and between 09.00 and 12.00 on Saturdays. Some shops are open until 19.00 Mon-Fri and until 17.00 on Saturdays. Shops are usually closed on Sundays, except for a few establishments with special permits.

Public Transport(Please remember that the registration fee for accompanying persons includes a 72 hour ticket for the public transport system in Vienna).

Vienna has an excellent public transport system which is very effective and inexpensive. Tickets are available from machines at underground stations (maestro debit cards accepted), at news agent’s, or at Vienna Transport Authority’s ticket offices. Tickets bought in advance are cheaper and must be punched in a blue ticket cancelling machine on the tram or bus, or at the barrier before boarding the underground train.

Single trip tickets can be used for any single trip within Vienna. You may change lines (and switch between bus, tram, underground, or urban train), but you may not interrupt your journey. Ticket price: EUR 1.80 when bought in advance; EUR 2.20 when bought in the means of transport.The 24-hour pass is valid throughout Vienna for exactly 24 hours from the time it is punched. Price: EUR 5.70The 48-hour pass is valid throughout Vienna for exactly 48 hours from the time it is punched. Price: EUR 10.00The 72-hour pass is valid throughout Vienna for exactly 72 hours from the time it is punched. Price: EUR 13.60 The 8-day ticket is valid for any eight days, not necessarily eight consecutive days. It is a rover ticket, which means you can travel all around Vienna. You can also use the ticket for several people travelling together. Simply punch one strip for each person in the group. Price: EUR 28.80 Week-pass is valid from Monday to Monday, 09.00 hrs. Price: EUR 14.00

Taxis A taxi is the most comfortable way of getting around the city but also the most expensive. They are identifiable by their roof-sign which is lit when available. Prices must be displayed inside the cab and meters (which are compulsory in all cabs) will indicate the fare. There are Taxi ranks throughout the city, but calling is often your best option. Please address the hotel reception desk.

General Information

Travelling from and to the Airport Vienna International Airport is located 13 kilometres south east of Vienna.

Rapid Train Railway The rapid train railway line S7 takes you directly from the airport to the hotel / congress venue (get of at station “Rennweg”). The price for a one way ticket is EUR 3,60.

CAT - City Airport TrainThe CAT runs every 30 minutes and takes 16 minutes. It is covered from 6:05 hrs to 00:05 hrs (Airport to City) and from 5:38 hrs to 23:38 hrs (City to Airport). Tickets may be purchased online (EUR 8.00 single or EUR 15.00 return), from ticket machines at the airport/station (EUR 9.00 single or EUR 16.00 return) or on board (EUR 12.00 single). From ‘Wien Mitte’ you can take the tram line O direction Migerkastraße and get off at Ungargasse / Neulinggasse (two stops).

Taxi fares to the conference venue are about EUR 35.00 and take around 25 minutes. There is a taxi rank outside the airport terminal. Night-time fees are slightly higher.

V.A.T.A value-added tax (V.A.T.) of generally 20% is applied to most products and services (a 10% V.A.T. applies on e.g. books, food and a few other items). The V.A.T. is included in the displayed price.

Insurance, Liability The organiser can not be held liable for losses, personal injury, property damage or additional expenditure due to changes for whatever reason. Participants are requested to obtain information about health and travel insurance.
