CALL TO REGISTER! KY ISSUES CONFERENCE 2017 IS SEPTEMBER 28-OCTOBER 1

The 2017 Issues Conference takes place at the Lake Cumberland 4-H Educational Center in Jab-ez, KY. During this conference, high school juniors and seniors will select an issue that they are con-cerned about and briefly research the topic. They are given the opportunity to share their ideas and collaborate with other 4-H’ers from around the state to identify and address local issues. Adult facilitators work with delegates, leading them in the process of preparing a simulated presentation to a community board. Following the conference, our county team will have the opportunity to submit a mini-grant proposal addressing an identified lo-cal issue! KEEP CALM AND COOK ON GROUP A new year of cooking and baking will begin in Oc-tober inside the fabulously equipped kitchen of the Enrichment Center! A new year also means it’s time to recruit new (or returning) cooks! Both expe-rienced and inexperienced cooks/bakers will be sure to have a fun and tasty time preparing recipes and learning helpful techniques to be successful in

the kitchen. The environment is relaxed, yet organized and ac-tion-packed. The group leader will guide everyone via the main demonstration kitchen with step-by-step instructions. “Seasoned”

cooks might even take on more of a leadership role helping the novice cooks. All new recipes will be used this year. Below is the registration information for those interested in joining the group. Limited spots are available! You MUST be an enrolled 2018 4-H member before registering, and you

MUST be able to attend all dates!

When: One Thursday a month, from October-April:

APPLY FOR SPECIAL 4-H FAIR AWARDS OUTSTANDING 4-H’ER AWARD –Two 4-H’ers (Jr. and Sr.) are selected annually, based

on the number of points accumulated throughout the fair week with their exhibits in the 4-H division (Cloverville, fruits and vegetables, horse and livestock).

CLOVERVILLE 4-H AWARDS – Presented to two 4-H’ers, one high-point Jr. and one high-point Sr. from exhibits in Cloverville (Floral Hall).

Applications are available at the Extension Office or online at http://boone.ca.uky.edu/cloverville and are due by September 22, 2017. Awards will be given at the annual Achievement Banquet.

4-H ACHIEVEMENT BANQUET The 4-H Achievement Banquet will be held on Thursday, November 2. Invitations will be mailed!

NEW 4-H CLUB FORMING: GUINEA PIG CLUB!

If you love guinea pigs and would like to learn more about them, this would be the group for you! We are looking for people interested in being part of the new Guinea Pig Club. If this is something you would like to get involved with, please contact Ben or Christie Emerson at [email protected] or at 859-918-6628. We need at least five members to start the club. Meeting days and times will be determined after we gather enough interest in the group. We look forward to meeting new guinea pig-loving friends!

Horse News

LOOKOUT HILLS HORSE LOVERS Are you a horse lover? If so, come join the LookOut Hills Horse Lovers group! Our goal is to expose horse lovers to all the fun and responsibilities that horses have to offer. We have two age available for participation: 4-8 year olds that meet at 6:00 pm, and 9-17 year olds that meet at 7:00 pm. You do not need to own a horse to join. We will meet at LookOut Hills Farm in Burlington one Friday a month to learn about and ride horses. The dates for 2017 are: September 15 and October 20 (wear cos-tumes for the Halloween party!). If you need directions or more information, please call Donna Bray at 859-816-9395.

RIDING/DRIVING LOGS Riding/driving logs are due by September 30. The period covered is September 1, 2016 through August 31, 2017. Forms can be found at http://boone.ca.uky.edu/4-h-horse-program.

2017 STATE 4-H HORSE SHOW Congratulations to all of our Top 10 finishers at this year’s Kentucky State 4-H Horse Show, you made us proud! The finishers are: Chelan Beasley (4), Josie Bronk (3), Elissa Craig (4), Rylee Eilerman (2), Clare Kunkel (3), Faith Pi-raro (2), Adelle Richardson (4), and Grace Whitton (4).

In the Drill Team Competition, Boone County had three teams compete in the small division with Elite Mares taking first, Young Guns finish-ing second, and Elite Fillies finishing tenth. It’s great to see all of their hard work and dedica-tion pay off! All of our participants did a great job and represented Boone County in a profes-sional manner.

2017/2018 HORSE EDUCATIONAL HOURS The first opportunity for horse educational hours will be Monday, September 11, from 7:00-9:00 pm at the Boone County Fairgrounds (see enclosed flyer). You will need to bring your horse. As other opportunities get scheduled, we will update this list.

ATTENTION BREYER HORSE LOVERS! Have you ever wondered what the big deal with Breyer Horses is? Are you already a collector looking to meet others in the area? If so, then this club is for you! We have almost everything we need to move forward with our club...all we

need now are interested members like you! This club will meet once a month, and we’ll discuss different molds, events, BreyerFest, and maybe even have

some guest speakers! If this sounds like some-thing that you may be interested in, call the Ex-tension Office at 586-6101, and ask to speak with Christy.

YOUNG GUNS The Young Guns are wrapping up an eventful sum-mer! At the beginning of August, they got to show their talents to their hometown crowd at the Boone County Fair. Our next event will be on September 11 from 7:00-9:00 pm, hosting a drill team fun day at the Boone County Fairgrounds. Admission is free, and all rid-ing ability levels are welcome! Drill Team is such an exciting activity; the Young Guns look forward to sharing their love of the sport with all who are inter-ested! Snacks and drinks will be provided, and all riders are guaranteed to have a lot of fun while learning some drill team maneuvers and improving their riding skills. This event counts as two horse education hours. We hope you will come out and make it a great night with the Young Guns! We are always excited about getting new riders! BOONE COUNTY 4-H SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD

Two Boone County 4-H livestock exhibitors were given a new award at the Boone County Fair this year. This award is sponsored by an anonymous donor who wanted to recognize members who stand out from the others. The award is based on the following criteria:

1. Member is aging out of the 4-H program.

2. Member is continuing their education.

3. Superior sportsmanship in livestock over the course of total years is displayed in 4-H.

This award will be given annually to a 4-H member deserving of this title and comes with a monetary award as well. The two recipients this year are Rachel Utz and Aubrey Bays! Congratulations!

4-H LIVESTOCK CLUB

The 4-H Livestock Club will kick off the new program year on Thursday, September 14 from 7:00-8:30 pm at the Boone County Ex-tension Office. We will be discussing the 4-H Achievement Program, elect new officers and get re-acquainted. You don’t want to miss it!

ATTENTION 4-H SALE OF CHAMPIONS PARTICIPANTS!

There will be a meeting on Tuesday, Septem-ber 26 at 6:30 pm at the Boone County Exten-sion Office to put together the buyer plaques. Each participant will be responsible for assem-bling their buyer plaques. All materials will be provided. All 4-H Sale of Champion partici-pants need to attend this meeting. Pizza will be served.

4-H LIVESTOCK RECORD BOOKS The 4-H livestock record books will be available for pickup at the Extension Office on Septem-ber 26! If they are not picked up by October 31, they will be thrown away.

4-H LIVESTOCK CLUB INFO. It is once again time to start the 4-H Livestock Club. Six hours of livestock education taught by certified livestock leaders is required to par-ticipate in the market and breeding divisions for county, district, and state competition. Each participant in the market animal project must have 6 educational hours before the validation/weigh-in for each species. This includes beef, dairy, sheep, goat, hog, rabbit, chicken, and duck. The participants in the breeding animal project must receive 6 educational hours be-fore June 1, 2018. Also, the participant and his/her parent must attend the mandatory livestock

meeting in January.

Please plan to attend meetings early in the year. Make-up time will not be given. All 4-H Livestock Club meetings will be held at the Extension Office unless otherwise noted. Please contact Christy if you have any ques-tions.

The first meeting of the new program year for the 4-H Livestock Club will be:

STATE LIVESTOCK JUDGING TEAM Congratulations to Blair Cupps for being se-lected to travel with the state livestock judging team this fall for the opportunity to compete at the national level. She will be attending live-stock judging practice throughout the fall sea-son honing in on her skills. She will have a grueling schedule and will have to sacrifice many personal opportunities for her commit-ment to judging livestock. Congratulations, Blair, and good luck!

Project club news

ELECTRONICS CLUB We'll soon be moving on to the next part of our digi-tal electronics adventure. This will include the topics of digital memory, data transfer techniques, and da-ta processing. Essentially, we'll be exploring how computers work! Join us in the Rouse Room of the Boone County Extension Office on Tuesday, Sep-tember 12 from 6:30-8:00 pm to discover how to

AEROSPACE CLUB On July 22, the Aerospace Club got a behind-the-scenes tour of CVG Airport. We want to thank all the firefighters, police officers, and tour guides that went out of their way to provide such a memorable expe-rience enjoyed by all. September takes us back to our indoor meetings in the lower level of the Enrich-ment Center on Thursday, September 7 from 6:30-8:00 pm. From Sep-tember through No-vember, we will be focusing on drones. Topics will include: FPV and what it in-cludes, racing drones, how to build a drone from a kit, and all the uses of a 3D printer to create accessories for drones like camera mounts. New this year will be indoor flying with our micro drones with or without the use of our obstacle course. For more infor-mation, contact us at [email protected]. New members are always welcome!

WIGGLES AND WAGS DOG CLUB In August, we worked the drink booth and participat-ed in the dog show at the fair. We had four partici-pants in the show and there were two categories,

walking on a leash and tricks. The kids and dogs both did very well! Our next meeting is on September 19 at 7:00 pm, where we will be having a guest speaker who runs a local rescue. Hope to see you there! Pictured: RJ Wilson, Rachel Schlosser,

PAWS AND CLAWS CAT CLUB There was a good crowd that came to watch the 4-H Cat Show at the Boone County Fair. Thank you to members who came to support those showing their cats! Congratulations and thank you to Sarah Huddleston, Kirsten Robbins, and Aubrey Heltman for showing their cats. They all did an outstanding

job! Our next meeting will be Wednesday, September 13 from 4:30-5:30 pm at the Boone County Exten-sion Office. Members should bring new ideas for events and activities for this year. We will discuss new officers for the year as well. All old and new members need to register for 4-H in

September. You can get an enrollment form from the Extension Office or online at boone.ca.uky.edu. Once enrolled, you will receive the 4-H newsletter each month and a club reminder postcard when you join the club. For more information or questions, please contact Joan at [email protected].

Drill Team Fun Day

Where: Boone County Fair Grounds

When: September 11, 2017 From 7:00-9:00 pm

This fun day is FREE! Come out and experience how we learn and have

fun with the drill team! Not only will you learn some mechanics of drill

team, you will also learn ways to improve your horsemanship. You are

guaranteed to have a good time! We will be providing snacks and

drinks. You must bring your own horse. Contact Joyce Voet at 859-
