Describe the Vietnam War as part of the Cold War
Word Wall Vocabulary:
• Cold War: period of tension between United States and Soviet Union, marked by competition in Asia and developing space travel
• Domino theory: the idea that if one country fell to communism, the rest would fall
• Gulf of Tonkin: site of supposed attack on US navy ships by North Vietnamese, used as foundation for US to enter the war
• Ho Chi Minh: leader of Communist North Vietnam
• Napalm: a highly flammable sticky jelly used in bombs and flamethrowers during Vietnam War
• Ngo Dinh Diem: assassinated South Vietnamese dictator
• Tet Offensive: coordinated series of North Vietnamese attacks on more than 100 cities and outposts in South Vietnam
• Vietcong: Communist guerrillas in South Vietnam
• Vietnamization: Nixon’s plan to gradually remove American soldiers and allow the South Vietnamese to take control
War Breaks Out in Vietnam
• Early 1900s: France controlled what is now Vietnam
• After World War II, Vietnam hoped for independence, but France hoped to reclaim its colony
• France was ultimately defeated, and Vietnam divided at 17 north latitude
• North of this line was ruled by Communist Ho Chi Minh
• South of this line was ruled by anti-Communist dictator Ngo Dinh Diem
Turn and Talk
Based on what you know, how are North and South Vietnam similar to North and South Korea?
ANS: Both are Asian countries, both are divided at a particular line of latitude, both are dealing with issues of communism versus non-communism
The United States Gets Involved
• A group of South Vietnamese called Vietcong who hated dictator Diem worked against him
• Eventually, South Vietnamese generals assassinated Diem, but they were not popular either
• It appeared that communist North Vietnam was going to take over South Vietnam
• Domino theory: Because of the threat of communism and President Johnson’s claim that North Vietnamese patrol boats had attacked two U.S. destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin, the United States decided to enter the war
Turn and Talk
Why would the United States fabricate the Gulf of Tonkin incident?
ANS: Johnson was following the American policy of containment. Without the Gulf of Tonkin incident, we didn’t really have any reason to join the conflict.
The United States Gets Involved
•The U.S. had the best equipped, most advanced army in the world
•However, they were fighting in unfamiliar jungles, and the government they were defending was becoming unpopular
The United States Withdraws
• During the late 1960s, the war became more and more unpopular
• Many people were draftedand forced to serve in the military
• There were exceptions to the draft, such as medical reasons, being a student, or conscientious objectors
• Young people began to protest the war, especially after the My Lai massacre
The United States Withdraws
•President Nixon had a plan called Vietnamization which allowed American troops to slowly leave, turning over control of Vietnam
• The last U.S. troops left in 1973, and in 1975, the South Vietnam capitol of Saigon fell to the communist north
Guided Practice: Summary
• In the bottom portion of your c-notes, complete a summary over the characteristics of the Vietnam War
•For help, use the following sentence stems:The Vietnam War was between….supported by…
The result of the Vietnam War was…
Fun Fact
•More than 60% of Americans killed in Vietnam were under the age of 21
•My Lai Massacre: mass murder of unarmed Vietnamese civilians by U.S. troops in South Vietnam
•Many songs created during the 70s were a protest to the Vietnam War. Ex: Fortunate Son
Guided Practice: Who Fought in Vietnam?
• Using the class set of the Who Fought in Vietnam worksheets: • Pretend it is 1969 and you were born between 1944 and
1950. Find your birthday on the chart. Would you have been drafted?
• If you had been selected for the draft in 1969, what would you have done? Would you have willingly served? Pursued deferment? If so, what reason would you give for your deferment?
• If you did not get drafted, would you have volunteered to serve in a noncombat role? Would you have participated in the anti-war movement? Why or why not?
Independent Practice: Regular
• Use the following list of words to create visual vocab for the Vietnam War. Choose six:• Cold War• Domino theory• Gulf of Tonkin• Ho Chi Minh• Napalm• Ngo Dinh Diem• Tet Offensive• Vietcong• Vietnamization
