PUBLISHED BYIN PARTNERSHIP WITH

BRAD PRECHTL, CEO: According to the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) annual report, Cancer Facts & Figures 2019*, the overall rate of cancer deaths in the United States has declined by 27 percent over the past 25 years. The decrease in mortality rates is due to several factors, including a reduction in the number of people who are smoking, improvements in early detection tools and techniques, and the development

of new drugs and therapies that are more effective in treating all types of cancers. These factors have led to lower death rates in all four of the major cancer types: lung, breast, prostate and colorectal. While these are certainly milestones to be celebrated, the new statistics also point out that cancer is still the second leading cause of death in the U.S., after heart disease, among both men and women.

During 2018, we saw over 71,000 new patients throughout the FCS statewide network, and since Florida ranks second among the states in the number of adult cancer cases, we anticipate an increase in the number of patients we will see in 2019. Fortunately, we will be able treat these patients with the most advanced therapies and state-of-the-art technologies, as well as offering a vast array of Phase 1, 2 and 3 clinical trials for all types of cancers. As the largest independent community oncology practice in the United States, FCS is poised to continue setting benchmarks for community oncology and delivering the highest quality, value-based care throughout the remainder of the year.

* cancer.org/statistics

DR. LUCIO GORDON, PRESIDENT & MANAGING PHYSICIAN: The first half of 2019 has been fast-paced and has brought innovation to our practice. One of the highlights to date was the groundbreaking in mid-February for our third Drug Development Unit (DDU), which will be located in Lake Mary, delivering greater convenience for patients in Central Florida and along the East

Coast. Like the DDU in Sarasota, the Lake Mary facility will be dedicated to Phase 1 clinical trials, which are often first in humans, ensuring that FCS patients have access to the most promising new drugs prior to approval by the FDA. Over the past four years, the majority of all new cancer drugs approved for use in the U.S. were studied in clinical trials with FCS participation, prior to approval.

The extensive clinical research program at FCS rivals those at most academic medical centers and is the primary differentiator of our practice. Through our strategic partnership with Sarah Cannon, we are able to offer greater access to national clinical trials than any other oncology practice in Florida. I am extremely proud of all that we, together, have accomplished, and I look forward to bringing the latest innovations and treatments to our patients. We have only achieved these goals through the hard work and dedication of our incredible team of physicians, nurses, other clinicians and staff members. Thank you for all that you do and for always putting our patients first.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month & FCS Foundation Pink Week 2018

A Simple Pink Ribbon

The Pink Ribbon is symbolic of femininity due to its pink color and soft rounded contours. It could signify womanhood and sisterhood … it is representative of two arms embracing, crossed in a soft and gentle gesture of caring. It can be said that the inside space of the ribbonis shaped like an inverted tear drop, because Breast Cancer can turn your life upside downand for all the sadness that this disease can bring.

It could also be said that at the point where the ribbon overlaps, it holds in a space for hope.A place of determination and spirit to quietly rest. It is a sign of strength of the heart and soul.It keeps out bitterness and despair. The tails of the ribbon flare gently outward indicativeof the direction that we must move in, to provide research to conquer this disease.

It tells the story of persistence and patience, of assertiveness and of ability,of connecting and conducting.

It is not just a simple pink ribbon, is it?

I will wear my pink ribbon to honor every woman I know who has faced thechallenge of breast cancer and for every woman that I will never know as well.

COVER STORY

Celebrating New Leadership at Florida Cancer SpecialistsBY ELAINE GANICK

A fter being named President and Managing Physician of Florida Cancer Specialists (FCS) in November 2018, Dr. Lucio Gordan reflected on his new role and his plan for leading FCS forward–

ensuring the organization continues to advance community-based cancer treatment across Florida.

Dr. Gordan was chosen by the FCS Executive Board to succeed founder, Dr. William Harwin. Since his local Gainesville practice joined FCS nine years ago, Dr. Gordan has served as a member of the Executive Board and has chaired several key committees within the organization.

“I am so proud to be part of this organization. Over the last 35 years, FCS has grown into the largest independent medical oncology/hematology practice in the United States, offering patients community-based cancer care and access to more

clinical trials than any private oncology practice in Florida,” said Dr. Gordan.

“I am excited to lead FCS in its next chapter, and look forward to advancing our model of compassionate, world-class cancer care, close to home. It’s been such an incredible experience so far,” he said, as he talked about his first few months as President and Managing Physician in the role.

FCS CEO Brad Prechtl, MBA, said he, too, is excited about Dr. Gordan’s leadership and is eager to work with him in providing quality treatment to those who need it most. “Succeeding Bill is no easy task, but we’re all confident that Lucio will continue the great achievements we’ve had as an organization and, more importantly, will remain true to our mission,” Prechtl said.

Long before joining FCS, Dr. Gordan knew of the practice and its unparalleled reputation for quality and innovation. “I knew FCS was very dynamic and had a lot of promise,” he recalls. “But it was only after our group in Gainesville joined FCS that we realized just how truly premiere the practice is and how it enables us to take such great care of our patients.”

Dr. Gordan has been an instrumental leader at FCS and believes his experience will serve him well. “Over the years, I have served on various committees and had exposure to virtually every corner of FCS,” said Dr. Gordan. “Patient care is a team effort – and my experience has led me to believe that FCS is home to some of the best oncologists, nurses, pharmacists and clinical administrative staff in the country. I have always thought about how we can continue to improve our business, support patients and build on our strengths as a practice. I look forward to putting some of the lessons I have learned into action.”

In 2017, Dr. Gordan became a member of the Board of Directors of the Community Oncology Alliance (COA) and, since 2013, has served on the Executive Board of the Florida Society of Clinical Oncology (FLASCO).

Dr. Gordan graduated from medical school at the State University of Londrina College of Medicine in Brazil. Subsequently, he completed his Internship and Residency at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. In 2003, he completed his Fellowship in Hematology and Medical Oncology at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. Board-certified in Medical Oncology, Hematology and Internal Medicine, Dr. Gordan has received several grants for research and published articles in peer-reviewed journals. In 2013, he was awarded the prestigious FRIST Award from HCA in recognition of his service in the community and at North Florida Regional Medical Center.

The TransitionDr. Gordan noted that his transition into the new role has

been made easier because of Dr. Harwin’s commitment to the future success of the company.

“Having founded FCS with his wife, Marilyn, in 1984, Bill wants the transition to go smoothly. Both Brad and I are incredibly appreciative for his leadership,” noted Dr. Gordan. “Also, we both appreciate that Bill will continue to devote his time to patient care and share his passion for clinical research.”

Reflecting on his time working with Dr. Harwin, Prechtl added, “I’m honored to have worked with Bill over the past decade, and I’m glad he will continue to support our organization as an experienced clinical resource for patients.”

The Evolution of FCS Dr. Gordan has spent the last several months outlining his leadership strategy for FCS and his plans to maintain a close working relationship with CEO Brad Prechtl. Dr. Gordan, along with Prechtl, will focus on several new areas for growth, “such as establishing a telemedicine program and developing partnerships in areas such as education or research accrual,” he said.

Dr. Gordan will also focus on demonstrating the value of community oncology practices like FCS in treating patients. He was the lead author of the study, “The Financial Impact of the Sequester Cut to Medicare Part B Drug Reimbursement in Community Oncology,” which was recently published in the American Journal of Managed Care (AJMC). The study revealed that community oncology practices have lost $78 million as a result of the ongoing Medicare sequester cut to reimbursement for Part B drugs, which the Community Oncology Alliance (COA) states has driven an increase in the number of closings and rate of closure of community oncology practices in the United States.

Dr. Gordan also co-authored a 2017 study which found that the total cost of care for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy in a hospital outpatient setting is nearly 60 percent more expensive than the same treatment delivered in independent, community oncology practices.

From Prechtl’s perspective, Dr. Gordan was the perfect choice to be the new physician leader of FCS. “There are several skills that qualify Lucio to lead FCS,” Prechtl said. “He is trustworthy – which is probably the first and foremost qualification. He is humble, clearly focused on patient care, and incredibly well-respected by his peers, who have said he is ‘probably one of the smartest physicians within FCS.’ And, he has the overwhelming support of the Executive Board, which has worked closely with him since the Gainesville practice joined FCS nearly a decade ago.”

“Even in the smaller things like replying to an email,” Prechtl continued, “Lucio will make it a priority to get back to every single one, and he gets hundreds per day. That’s the kind of attention to detail that makes a great leader.”

Dr. Harwin concurs that Dr. Gordan is the right choice to lead FCS. “This is the opportunity of a lifetime, and I’m thrilled that Lucio is taking it on, said Dr. Harwin. He is well known in our field, and is a fair, level-headed leader. He knows our business as well as anyone could – I can’t think of anyone else more qualified to lead FCS than him.”

Striking a BalanceDespite his new role at FCS, Dr. Gordan will continue

seeing patients. “Patient care is my passion and I don’t think I will ever let that go,” he said.

Dr. Gordan plans to see patients three days per week and spend two days each week completely devoted to management of FCS. He will visit FCS headquarters in Fort Myers once or twice a month and will regularly meet with leaders across all divisions – from Finance and Compliance to Research and Human Resources.

While Dr. Gordan’s new role is exciting, one of the biggest challenges he believes he will face may be maintaining a healthy work-life balance. “I can count on my wife and my 13-year-old daughter to make sure that work doesn’t totally consume me – just as it should not consume any of our doctors or staff,” he said.

The close-knit family of three shares lots of interests and one big passion: their two horses.

“I grew up with horses in Brazil,” Dr. Gordan explained. “My wife enjoys riding and my daughter loves to jump over obstacles. I’m usually exhausted after we take the horses out to a farm near Gainesville, but it’s a great workout. Spending time with my family and out in nature helps me be a more focused, balanced leader at FCS each and every day.”

P atient safety is paramount at Florida Cancer Specialists (FCS), nowhere more so than in connection with the critical role played by pharmacy technicians.

FCS employs eight pharmacy trainers in its regions around the state, each responsible for seeing to it that technicians receive the education required to ensure that they accurately mix chemotherapy drugs, observe internal controls and follow procedures designed to guarantee the sterility of medications.

Annually, FCS trainers participate in an in-house conference. The fifth such meeting was held in Orlando on April 25–26. The FCS Pharmacy Trainers Group, led by Melody Chang, established the pharmacy-training program in 2014.

“Over the years, we have learned what skills it is important for trainers to possess,” said Chang, who is the Director of Pharmacy Operations for FCS. “Our conference emphasizes those skills, including communication and teamwork.”

Participants are reminded of the Pharmacy Operations mission “to ensure that Clinical Services, alongside Practice & Inventory Management, are aligned seamlessly to produce the best, safest and most cost-effective outcomes for our patients.”

Chang can relate closely to clinical services delivery and collaborate with physicians, nurses and other clinical staff to provide consultation services and drug therapy management tailored to the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of prescribed therapies.

Camilo Rodriguez, the Associate Director for Pharmacy Operations; Pharmacy Services Manager Jana Kutzko and Pharmacy Operations Manager Stephanie Sabillon see to operations service delivery and are focused on pharmacy practice standards and guidelines, inventory management and waste management.

Chang, Rodriguez, Kutzko and Sabillon all helped lead the conference.

The pharmacy trainers who attended were April Arredondo, Terri Ertley, Michelle Middleton, Darrin Owen, Naiomy Singh-Narain, Lori Whatton, April Wilson and Tracy Wuerth.

Conference presentation topics included a Research Pharmacy Operational Update; Leadership Standard Work; Biological Products and Healthcare: The Emergence of Biosimilars; Project Management Training and Communication Styles Training.

Members of the pharmacy team, Chang stressed, see themselves as “gatekeepers for patients who receive infusion drugs. Those patients rely on pharmacy technicians to mix the right fluids in the proper dosages and double-check their work before the nurse hangs the IV bag and administers the medication.”

Trainers, at any given time, may find themselves working with technicians of varying experience levels. Some may have been mixing drugs for years while others may be brand new to FCS and an oncology pharmacy operation.

The conference gives participants a chance to reflect upon results from the previous year and compare their region’s performance to that of others. Trainers are encouraged to bring forward any new ideas for ways to further enhance patient safety.

Trainers, said Sabillon, in addition to teaching policies, procedures and practices, are involved in developing curriculum for continuing education classes for technicians, who must periodically renew their licenses.

Dr. Lucio Gordan, FCS President and Managing Physician, and Vicki Caraway, Vice President Clinical Services, stopped by the conference.

Their participation, Chang said, “gives you an indication as to how important our role is to FCS and the support our conference receives from top management.”

“We are working together to promote pharmacy operations as a brand within the FCS community and to increase awareness of what we do,” Sabillon said.

A s we prepare for the 2019 Annual Operations Meeting, we reflect on last year’s summit. For one day in October, Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium, home of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was turned into a hall of heroes, but not the kind who wear shoulder pads and cleats.

Instead, 225 Florida Cancer Specialists (FCS) leaders gathered at the sports venue for the organization’s annual Operations Meeting, the seventh such gathering in its history. The theme for the conference: A League of Heroes.

FCS Chief Operating Officer Todd Schonherz, who organized and led the meeting, said, “Employees of FCS are heroes to the management team, the organization and, especially, to our patients.

“Every day, we treat patients who are dealing with a terrible disease,” Schonherz continued. “Many people in our organization help them get through the worst battle of their lives,

especially our people on the front lines — our front-desk personnel, medical assistants, nurses, administrative team members and others. They do a great job supporting our patients and making every part of their experience with us as pleasant as possible.

“It’s not just the operations team. Anyone who plays a role in taking care of cancer patients is incredibly valuable to our organization.”

The meeting is the one time each year when key operators come together, including Executive and Senior Management teams, Office Managers, Head Nurses, Clinic Financial Managers and Physician Liaisons.

“We share a little bit about our accomplishments over the past year,” Schonherz said. “More importantly, we talk about where FCS is going and use the meeting as a learning opportunity regarding the strategies our organization has used to make us extremely successful.”

Pairs of presenters — someone from the practice side of the organization partnered with someone from the central services area or a corporate department — introduced a solution or an improvement and talked about how it made a difference to a clinic.

“We covered everything from new information technology strategies to accomplishments of our Clinical Directions Team to process improvements related to value-based care initiatives,” Schonherz said. “We addressed centralized services provided by our Care Management Team, everything from working with new patient paperwork to central triage.”

The meeting focused on practice growth and ways in which location personnel can work with liaisons to promote growth in their respective markets.

That future, Schonherz said, is bright.“As a leader of this organization, I am extremely bullish on

FCS,” Schonherz enthused. “We are well-positioned given the investments we have made over the years in people, processes and technologies, and I’m excited about the teams we have in place to deliver and implement solutions locally in all of our practices. I am

highly confident that we will continue to be very successful.”Schonherz recruited Bill Rancic as a celebrity guest speaker

for the conference and, as a bonus, his wife Giuliana attended as a “surprise guest.”

“Bill is an award-winning author, motivational speaker and media personality,” Schonherz said, “and I really wanted his message to be about the traits of a successful entrepreneur: going after it, not taking no for an answer, assuming ownership and being accountable.”

Rancic wrote the New York Times best-selling book, “You’re Hired: How to Succeed in Business and Life.” He later wrote “Beyond the Lemonade Stand” to help educate and motivate young people about the value of money and how to leverage skills, talents and abilities at an early age.

But he is perhaps best known as the winner in the first season of NBC’s reality show, “The Apprentice.” In Tampa, Rancic talked about steps he took early in his career that put him in a position to win an opportunity to work for the Trump organization, an experience he said he greatly appreciated.

As a breast cancer survivor, Giuliana Rancic was personally motivated to attend the conference.

A best-selling author herself, she is a familiar entertainment journalist and television personality, and a talented builder of businesses.

“What stood out for me and for our entire group was how humble Giuliana was and how appreciative she was about her caregivers,” Schonherz said. “She was very transparent about her experience, and she had a lot of admiration for people who take care of cancer patients day in and day out. She was relatable to all of us and incredibly moving.”

There is much about Giuliana and Bill Rancic that Schonherz hopes FCS employees will emulate.

“I want all of the members of our team to have an entrepreneurial spirit,” he said. “If they see an opportunity to make things better, I encourage them to go for it. Don’t just sit back and hope that the work will get done by somebody else.”

Cancer survivor and television personality, Giuliana Rancic and her husband, Apprentice winner Bill Rancic, visited the FCS Tampa Cancer Center following their appearance at the annual Operations Meeting in 2018.

A formative experience with a friend’s cancer diagnosis set Dr. Sachin Kamath on his career path as a radiation oncologist. Kamath, who joined Florida Cancer Specialists (FCS) in 2015,

was still in elementary school when his classmate was diagnosed with leukemia.

“I learned how sick he was and about his treatments,” said Kamath, who practices in The Villages. “I was amazed at how this huge team of doctors and nurses came together to not only provide medical treatment, but to provide him and his family emotional support.”

At the annual Clinical Summit, Florida Cancer Specialists (FCS) brings together physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and researchers to share the latest information and developments in the rapidly changing field of Oncology. Last year’s Clinical Summit drew more than 700 participants.

“Oncology care and research is exciting, yet complex,” said Dr. Lucio Gordan, FCS president and managing physician. “It’s vital for us as oncology care providers to make sure we’re always learning so that we can give our patients the best treatment possible.”

Discussions during the three-day continuing medical education program focus on the newest cancer therapies and research.

Dr. Jose Lutzky, who practices at Mount Sinai Medical Center

in Miami and is one of the foremost experts on melanoma in the region, gave a presentation on immunotherapies and targeted therapies for the disease. “We do a lot of research in the area of metastatic melanoma, noted Dr. James Reeves Jr., director of Research Operations at FCS. “He did a very good job of sharing the progress that’s been made.”

One of the annual highlights is always the year-end review, which was delivered by Dr. Neil Love, founder of Research to Practice, a company renowned for gathering and sharing a range of cutting-edge perspectives from internally recognized cancer experts.

“It was a rapid-fire discussion of what’s current in tumor types, such as lung cancer, breast cancer, colon and GI cancers, and hematologic malignancies,” said Dr. Reeves.

The Clinical Summit focuses intensely on providing participants with an overview of FCS’ efforts to stay on the forefront of cancer research through its on-going collaboration with Sarah Cannon. “It’s a strong partnership that we have had in place for many years,” said Katie Goodman, FCS director of Clinical Research. “It’s helpful to discuss the newest research and therapies, to look at what will be the next steps we take and ensure that our program continues to offer patients access to cutting edge clinical trials,” Goodman said.

FCS executive leaders also took time to provide updates on key initiatives and benchmarks that were achieved during the

year, and representatives from various internal departments, such as Care Management, Rx To Go and the FCS Foundation, showcased their services that support patient care.

Always most touching are presentations from special guests who share how their lives have been touched by cancer. Last year’s keynote speaker was U.S. Olympic speed skater Dan Jansen, who, minutes before competing in the 1988 Olympics, learned that his sister had died of leukemia. Although he left that year with no medals, he became the recipient of the U.S. Olympic Spirit Award. He later set eight world records in speed skating and won gold at the 1994 winter games. Soon after, he established the Dan Jansen Foundation to support families affected by leukemia.

“It was very inspirational because he is so closely aligned with what motivates all of us at FCS,” said Shelly Glenn, chief marketing and sales officer at FCS.

Dr. Manish Patel, who works at the Phase 1 Drug Development Unit in Sarasota, said the annual Summit demonstrates the sophistication and unique nature of FCS. “Very few practices can operate to the same level and offer a similar level of treatment opportunities to patients locally,” he said. “As a statewide practice, FCS rivals many of the academic medical centers, in Florida and beyond.”

D r. Nuruddin Jooma is a Hematologist/Medical Oncologist at Florida Cancer Specialists (FCS) who has been practicing and living in the Clearwater area for the past 10 years. Born in Pakistan, his

family moved to San Antonio, Texas when he was 14. Following undergraduate study at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Dr. Jooma went on to earn his master’s degree in Public Health and his MD at Tulane University in New Orleans. There he met his wife, FCS Radiologist and Nuclear Medicine Physician Dr. Abida Taher, and started a family.

But that wasn’t his only stroke of luck in The Big Easy.Dr. Jooma was planning to specialize in Gastroenterology when

he began his rotation in Hematology and Oncology. From day one, he knew he had found his calling.

These young girls do not have most of the things that we take for granted — parents and a house or television, and this and that. How the girls manage their lives makes me realize how fortunate I am. You just have a better appreciation for life.”- DR. NURUDDIN JOOMA

“After the first day of my rotation, as I was walking to my car … I can still picture it,” he recalls. “I looked at my watch; it was past 6 p.m. and I had been in the office for six hours, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but to me it was ‘Wow, this is a first.’ Those six hours really flew by and I realized this was the first day I didn’t look at my watch to see when I could go home. That was what led me towards hematology and oncology.”

He remains clear on what hooked him and made those hours fly.

“It was the people, the patients that came in to the clinic. They just looked so normal,” he remembers. “They looked like everybody else and, yet, a lot of them had advanced cancers. I also felt like these people knew their priorities in life. Unfortunately, they were forced to know; however, their attitudes were so different from anybody else. There was this satisfaction and insight; I noticed it after just one day taking care of these patients.”

This sense of empathy and concern for others eventually led Dr. Jooma and his wife, Dr. Taher, to become involved with the Grace Girls Home, an orphanage established in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, in 2002, near the end of a 30-year civil war that had ravaged the country. A mutual friend introduced them to the organization and they agreed to host a fundraiser for the Girls Home. They set a target of $10,000.

“The caterer we hired for the fundraiser ended up donating his fee for the night. Then the emcee was so moved that he raised the target to $25,000, but we stalled at $22,000. When the caterer found out we were short, he said, ‘You know, I’ll give the last $3,000 because it’s the only way I’m going to be able to sleep tonight.’ His bill was $2,000, and he ended up leaving $3,000 more on the table.”

That first fundraiser was the beginning of a commitment that continues today and now involves Dr. Jooma’s entire family. Dr. Taher sits on the Grace board of directors and the couple’s son, 16-year-old Gibraan, has been creating videos for the organization and conducting weekly Skype sessions to help the girls in the home learn English. Daughter Zoya, 11,

also teaches conversational English via Skype. On top of their fundraising, Dr. Jooma seeks to provide HPV vaccinations for the girls, a critical health need in Sri Lanka.

One of Dr. Jooma’s most recent initiatives is collecting new and used iPads from his FCS colleagues and donating them to the orphanage. Grace Girls Home recently had a computer lab installed, but there are only four desktops, which limits access and learning opportunities.

Sri Lanka has invested heavily in its Wi-Fi infrastructure, making it accessible in even small towns. Over the years, high school and college students in the states have developed relationships online with the girls at Grace, and student volunteers give their time during the week and weekends to teach English language skills and computer skills as well as reading and writing.

“Our hope is that with individual iPads, that learning process can be facilitated for each child at the orphanage,” he said. “The teaching session is conducted over Skype, and the flexibility of having an iPad allows easier scheduling and a longer session with each child.”

This will be a tax-deductible donation, and Dr. Jooma plans to deliver the iPads during his next trip at a later date.

But as much as they give, Dr. Jooma insists his family is reaping the real rewards.

“I was told before I went there that I would learn more from the girls than they would learn from me. I didn’t really appreciate that comment until I was there. There’s so much unconditional love given by these girls. It just melts your heart to be there.”

“You can’t help but be grateful for what you have in life. Between the cancer patients we treat every day and doing this, supporting the girls and where they live, it’s very fulfilling. These young girls do not have most of the things that we take for granted — parents and a house or television, and this and that. How the girls manage their lives makes me realize how fortunate I am. You just have a better appreciation for life.”

What does Dr. Jooma do with his spare time? He laughs at the question and says he has tried golf, but it took too much time away from family, so he found another hobby. This past July, after many months of training, he successfully climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and raised $2,500 in charitable contributions – half for Grace Girls Home and half for FCS Foundation.

Climb every mountain, Doc.

Joyce Nelson: Leveraging Global Experience at FCS BY ROB RUSHIN

When Joyce Nelson joined Florida Cancer Specialists (FCS) in 2018, she landed in the whirlwind of a rapidly expanding organization. Recently, she took some time

to share her approach to supporting a large and diverse team of passionate healthcare professionals.

That approach starts with four foundational key values Nelson incorporates in business and in her personal life: integrity, accountability, compassion and excellence.

In her role as Chief Human Resources Officer, Nelson is responsible for ensuring that FCS has the human resources (HR) capabilities needed to remain successful, and the

support to enable business strategy. “As our organization evolves within the ever-changing landscape of healthcare and our organic growth, HR must be able to effectively develop strategies that will continually bring value to FCS and are aligned with the company’s strategic plans. She points out that the role of HR has changed significantly through the years. “HR is no longer a back-office function, but a business partner at the table and forefront, helping shape and drive FCS. Our people strategies - everything from recruitment and benefits to employee development and the organization’s culture – must be aligned with our business strategies to achieve the desired outcomes,” she said.

Nelson has made great strides in transforming the HR

department into a strategic function with effective Centers of Excellence (CoEs) in talent acquisition, talent management, total rewards, and HR administration that drive and support people and culture initiatives across FCS. Her growing team consists of seasoned professionals who have expertise in Compensation & Benefits, Talent Acquisition, Organization Effectiveness & Learning, and HR Information Systems. Nelson implemented an HR Business Partner (HRBP) model to enhance her team’s effectiveness and responsiveness. These highly skilled HR professionals provide day-to-day support to an assigned group or region within FCS - enabling them to develop greater partnerships and familiarity to provide tailored solutions and services to meet specific needs. They draw on the expertise of the subject matter experts from the CoEs when needed, and together operate like an internal HR consultancy. Nelson also has recently established an Occupational Health function focused on employee health, wellness and safety.

Among her key goals are to position FCS as an “employer of choice,” able to attract, engage, develop, and retain the best talent with an inspiring culture and attractive employee value proposition (EVP). “Employees want to be part of something great,” Nelson explains. “They seek to be motivated and inspired as well as recognized and rewarded for their accomplishments and contributions. In turn, patients continue to receive the highest quality care and experience.”

EVP is the value employees perceive from working at FCS; EVP spans five key areas that ignite and engage our team members:

§ Opportunities to learn and grow § People, teams and leadership § Shared mission, values and social responsibility § Meaningful work and work-life balance § Total rewards and recognition

“In a highly competitive labor market, our ability to develop a strong EVP is imperative – we have to continually optimize how we attract and engage talent. In addition, our leaders must continually set the vision, communicate clear expectations, coach, inspire and build meaningful personal connections with every team member,” Nelson explains.

She is also actively focused on enhancing FCS’ entrepreneurial culture by partnering with physicians and staff to transform the organization into an employee-patient centric culture, founded on shared values and sense of purpose that unites the company, drives accountability and empowers team members to deliver exceptional care every day.

That kind of transformational culture includes the ability to strengthen recognition efforts for employees who demonstrate FCS’ C.A.R.E. values; celebrate our successes and consistently innovate. The launch of the FCS Leadership Institute, along with interactive learning opportunities, will proactively support employees, physicians and leaders in their continued clinical and professional development.

Nelson was born and raised in Canada and speaks French and conversational Spanish. Having worked in a variety of industries, her career has spanned several corners of the globe, including the Americas, Asia and Europe. Prior to joining FCS, Nelson held leadership roles with AdventHealth, Advex Advancing Excellence, Cogeco Canada, Quartet

Service Corporation and Algorithmics. Known for building high-performance teams, Nelson has helped companies achieve such recognition as “Top 50 Best Managed Private Companies” and “Tampa Bay Times Top Workplace.”

One of her key areas of focus is centered around inclusion in the workplace. For Nelson, that means creating a dynamic and effective work environment where individuals with different backgrounds are culturally and socially accepted, welcomed, and equally treated, and where they can provide meaningful contributions and maximize their potential.

Her experiences gained from working in 12 countries have sharpened her appreciation for how cultural differences and similarities contribute to a high performing workplace.

“There’s no question that the international aspect of my career history has had a strong impact on my perspective as a leader,” Nelson said of her diverse background.

Her interest in human behavior and passion for culture started early. “My parents traveled frequently and took me everywhere they went. Now, I love to travel whenever I can with my husband, Marshall, and our son, Ethan. We’ve spent quite a bit of time in Europe as well as Latin America,” said Nelson.

She truly loves to see the world and enjoys experiencing new cultures and ways of life. “One of the things that I like to do when traveling is to visit local schools and hospitals and discover what we can do to support children and caregivers in those communities,” she explains. “I’m also very interested in the growth and well-being of people in my local community. My husband and I have instilled in our son the importance of helping others by serving in food banks, spending time with the elderly and helping families with children with disabilities. Nelson has been a long-time board member and volunteer at Easter Seals Tampa.

In addition to her global work experience, Nelson has a personal connection that ties her to FCS and the world of cancer care. Her mother was diagnosed with bone cancer when she was an infant. She continued her fight and today is in complete remission.

“I had my own scare in 2018, when my doctor found a golf ball-sized mass in my right leg,” she continued. “Fortunately, the tumor was benign, but the sense of fear was overwhelming. I’ve seen first-hand just how important the human connection is to a patient’s experience. My personal journey renewed my calling to create an environment that enables compassionate care through meaningful personal connections.”

Among the HR Department’s many responsibilities, what does Nelson believe is its most important? It’s to ensure that the FCS mission, vision and C.A.R.E. values are at the heart of our corporate culture,” she responds. “These are the fundamental elements that shape and drive how all of us behave, interact and ultimately deliver world-class care to every patient, every time.”

“When an organization is intentional about improving its ability to attract, engage and retain top talent by creating a better workplace experience for its employees and physicians, the greatest outcome is, ultimately, greater customer satisfaction – and in our case - exceptional patient care and experience,” she concluded.

With great sadness, we note the passing of FCS Physician Dr. Philip Ndum in December 2018, following more than two years of fighting advanced melanoma.

Dr. Ndum began his practice as a medical oncologist/hematologist in the Palm Coast community in 2003 and joined Florida Cancer Specialists in 2013. Despite his diagnosis, Dr. Ndum continued to practice as his health allowed, serving as a constant example of faith, strength and courage.

Originally from Cameroon, Africa, Dr. Ndum demonstrated his love and dedication to his birthplace in a profound way. In 2011, he and his wife, Flora, succeeded in building and opening a health clinic — the first ever in his home village of Ndebaya in Cameroon.

As an FCS physician, Dr. Ndum also supported the Florida Cancer Specialists Foundation, and a Memorial Fund has been established in his name online at Foundation.FLCancer.com/DrNdum.

In addition to his wife, he leaves behind their three children: Bryan, Rodney and Sonia.

Dr. Ndum’s patients are now being cared for by Dr. Mitchell Weisberg, who has practiced in the area for more than 20 years and began practicing with Dr. Ndum in January 2017.

courageous battle with lung cancer in May 2019. Don joined FCS in 2014 as the inaugural member of our Care

Management team. Under his leadership, the team soon grew to more than 100 staff members and became an integral part of the care delivery process for our patients.

Don and his team are credited with pioneering many of our nationally recognized value-added programs, including central triage, new patient intake, transitional care management and survivorship, as well as the expansion of integrative services, such as social work and nutrition.

He had an incredible outlook and remained positive right to the very end. Don’s passion for his job was contagious, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication and compassion.

Dear Dr. Marte,

My father fought a brave battle with cancer for the past 12 years. He was diagnosed in India in 2007 with Stage 4 prostate cancer, and the doctors there gave him a prognosis of 2–3 years.

He was fortunate to move to the U.S. in 2010, and he was blessed to get the best medical treatment under your guidance that same year. I remember the day that you explained to us about his Gleason Score and gave our family the hope and courage to face this deadly disease. You were with him through the hormone therapy, immunotherapy, chemotherapy, radiation and the surgery. You have guided us in every stage of his treatment.

My mother would like to thank you from the bottom of her heart for the compassion and kindness you have shown to us. I am very grateful for the phone calls you made to update me after each of his office visits. We can never forget Heather, who tried to cheer us up and managed to learn a couple words in my father’s language.

On behalf of my family, I would like to thank you and all the staff at Florida Cancer Specialists for their exceptional service.

Dear Dr. Malhotra & Staff

We want to thank all of you so much for the wonderful Thanksgiving Patient Appreciation BBQ dinner. It was a wonderful night seeing everyone. Everyone worked so hard. Thank you to all the doctors who served us our dinner.Dr. Malhotra — thank you again for the past eight years and my

husband for three years.

Doctor Hussein,

My annual follow-up appointment with you was on Oct. 2, and I’m told it was Dawn that conducted my checkup. At the conclusion of my session, Dawn mentioned she detected an irregular heartbeat and that I should follow up with my GP and/or a cardio doctor ASAP. This was the first time any of my several doctors had made any mention of my heartbeat. In fact, a follow-up visit with my GP did not result in him indicating anything irregular. I did, however, have a follow up with my cardio doctor, and after a few visits and wearing a heart monitor for 48 hours, I was scheduled for a heart catheterization. Two days after that, I has a quad bypass.

I just want to thank Dawn for her due diligence on what I assumed was a “very healthy man” and, in my view, her life-saving diagnosis. I have always been very active with golf, tennis and other strenuous activities, and I dread to think what results I’d have today if I didn’t have my annual checkup with Florida Cancer Specialists and Dawn.

Please give Dawn a big hug of thanks from an ever-grateful patient of yours.

PS: My surgery was 2 weeks ago, and I’m home and doing great.

Fall 2019 43

Dear Patient Advocates:

I don’t know how often you receive thank you notes. But it is quite appropriate

that we let you know how much you have meant to us. I think it is also

important that you know the full story so that you can really understand your

impact on our lives.

You should know that we are not complainers. We know there are many who

are worse off than we are. In fact we try to count our blessings each day and

among those should be RX To Go!

Five years ago, my wife was diagnosed with colon cancer and received major

surgery, and you came immediately with assistance with her oral chemotherapy.

All it really took was a phone call, and you were there.

In August 2017, I was diagnosed with hemolytic anemia and CLL. The oral

chemotherapy started at over $10,000 a month. Once again you were there with

a phone call. And you have helped me get at least three grants since then. We

are most amazed at how rapidly you responded. We never had to wait a week

to find out what was going to happen.

Then in October of that year, my wife was diagnosed with triple negative

breast cancer, and had a double mastectomy and chemotherapy. Those were a

difficult three months.

Do you understand that without your assistance, the monetary cost would have

been a major part of our worries? You gave us so much help that we could

concentrate on the disease and not the money.

So if you have days where you are not so aware of the purpose of your work,

please be reminded of this note. There are so many people you help and you

will never know how much; except for, perhaps, a thank you over the phone.

They are just as thankful as we are and there must be so many of them.

-A Thankful Husband and Wife
