There will be a retailer's association - Leonard KennedyThere has been a growing concern among manyCanadian record retailers that an association of itsmembers was necessary to keep pace with the manyproblems that have been plaguing the industry.

There was an association of recorddealers, The Retail Music Association of Canada,launched a few years ago. However, because of alack of interest, the association was put on the backburner.

The recent meeting of the NationalAssociation of Recording Merchandisers (NARM),in particular a luncheon attended by retailers fromaround the world, served as the perfect vehicle torenew an interest in this association.

Bob Lewis, who is very outspoken andwho heads up the British Association of RecordDealers (BARD), told the gathering that it took aboutfour years to get the association up and running,and that much had been accomplished. BARD isaffiliated with NARM. However, this apparentlyraised some negative feeling among a few membersof the Canadian delegation who were obviously not

interested in becoming a chapter of NARM.Leonard Kennedy, president of Saturn

Distributing, and a former president of The RetailMusic Association of Canada, was at the NARMluncheon. He was quite optimistic however, aboutthe future of an association of Canadian retailers.

"The general consensus of the wholemeeting was that everybody wanted to get startedagain on the retailer's association, but not as a chapterof NARM. There might come a time when we mightbe affiliated with NARM, but not as a chapter.

Kennedy was quite impressed with thecomments made by Lewis. "The British retailers allhave their common goals in trying to make theirbusinesses a little more profitable and a lot easier torun. And they are dealing with a lot of issues inEngland, which are similar to what we are dealingwith here in Canada, or for that matter, NorthAmerica."

Kennedy believes a lot of problematicissues can, through an organization, be resolvedwhich would make for a stronger retail industry.

Annie Lennox returns with new Medusa albumAnnie Lennox says that "the title of this album isambiguous and probably best left open tointerpretation." That statement goes a long waytowards explaining the content on this latest RCArelease from the former Eurythmics singer, entitledMedusa.

Recorded and mixed at The Aquarium,produced by Stephen Lipson, the album featuresLennox's interpretations of 10 of her favourite songsover the years.

According to Lennox, "The early part ofselecting and discovering songs was, for the mostpart, instinctive - drawn from memory or partialrecall. It was fascinating thereafter to begin to breakdown the various structures, chordal progressions,arrangements, etc., to refamiliarize myself withsongs, like old friends - to experiment, hoping tofind innovation."

The album features songs that many musicfans will be familiar with, along with some ofLennox's selected favourites that most of us willfind difficult to recall. But Lennox's solidinterpretation of the songs will make even the raritiesinstantly memorable.

try to re -constitute a second rate version of a brilliantsong. The challenge lay in the notion ofinterpretation."

Tracks on the record range from classicssuch as Take Me To The River and A White ShadeOf Pale, to less well known tracks such as the leadsingle, No More 'I Love You's'. The album alsofeatures tracks from such well-known writers as NeilYoung (Don't Let It Bring You Down), Paul Simon(Something So Right) and Bob Marley (Waiting InVain).

BMG has unleashed a torrent of promotionand publicity for Lennox's new record, hopeful thatsales of Medusa will spill past those of her previousRCA release, Diva, which hit sales of 300,000 unitsin Canada.

The album, which is released on March14, will get a strong promotional kick in Canadafrom Lennox herself, who will make an appearanceon MuchMusic's Intimate & Interactive program onMarch 13. BMG made it known that a performanceof this type was a bonus from Lennox, who wantedto acknowledge her strong Canadian fan base.Canada was one of the world leaders in sales ofLennox's Diva album.

These include dealing with shrinkage through sourcetagging, a common return form, UPC informationalong with electronic data transfer (EDI).

However, as far as Kennedy is concerned,the Canadian association is a done deal. "We arestarting up, and there are a lot of retailers today whoare ready to go. But we still have to get the recordcompanies behind us. As I said, there was a generalconsensus that everybody was for it and they

Richard Patterson endslong career with CBCRadio OttawaRichard E. Patterson has ended his long associationwith The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Heleaves the CBC to pursue other career opportunities.

Patterson has been working continuouslyas music programmer and consultant to CBC RadioOttawa's afternoon drive program, All In A Day,since 1986. He has also been involved with thebroadcast industry as a music consultant going backto 1982. He worked for many years as an associateproducer in the variety department for Performance,a popular program he worked with music producerPeter Shaw.

Patterson's CBC career also includescontracts as music consultant, assistant producer, andtalent coordinator for various radio and televisionspecials and programs, for local, regional andnetwork broadcast, going back to the mid -seventies.

One of Patterson's most recentcontributions to CBC Radio Ottawa has been thebuilding of a large folk and pop library. As CBC'sDoug Ward points out, "This material forms animportant part of the station's record librarycollection."

Patterson's knowledge of pop and rockmusic comes naturally. He was the drummer of TheEsquires, an Ottawa -based band, who released onthe Capitol label in the early sixties. The band won aJuno Award as vocal instrumental group of the yearin 1964, the first year the awards were introduced.They were then known as the RPM Awards and laterthe RPM Gold Leaf Awards, before becoming theJuno Awards.

Born in Ottawa in 1944, Patterson madehis first public appearance at the age of four as adancer. He used his height, 5 ft. 2, to his advantageas the drummer for The Esquires, becoming one ofthe most recognizable rock and rollers of that era.

basically agreed to have a meeting. I will be settingup the initial meetings. At that point we will plotout some kind of national association where we willhave representation from the west, Ontario, Quebecand eastern Canada."

Ironically, The Retail Music Associationof Canada will be the structure for the newassociation. "We're going to keep the sameassociation going."

One of the problems with the oldassociation was the dissent voiced by some of itsmembers on a too constant basis. Sam Snidermanwas a valued member of that association, but he wasthe source of much of the controversy.

"I don't think Sam (Sniderman) is opposedto the association. I think he can see where anassociation like this can benefit everyone. Sam isSam. He has so much information and so muchknowledge of the industry which would be helpfulto the association. He would be invaluable as asource. We're talking about an icon in the industry

Base and MacIsaac added toCARAS has announced that two A&M acts, BassIs Base and Ashley MacIsaac, have been added tothe already impressive lineup of performers for thisyear's Juno Awards. The Junos take place March26 at 8:00 pm at Hamilton's Copps Coliseum, to bebroadcast on the full CBC-TV network.

Bass Is Base is a three-piece group fromToronto whose music combines elements of '60sand '70s funk, with mid -'90s hip -hop. The band'sdebut album, First Impressions For The BottomJigglers, was initially an independent release. Thealbum garnered the group a Juno nomination in theR&B/Soul category, but also triggered a deal withA&M.

Ashley MacIsaac, who will join Bass IsBase for their performance on the show, is a greatyoung fiddle talent from Cape Breton. MacIsaacrecently picked up several awards at this year'sECMA awards, including instrumental artist of theyear. Since being discovered several years ago,MacIsaac has gone on to perform with such diverseacts as Paul Simon, The Chieftains, composer PhillipGlass and the Toronto Symphony.

MacIsaac is currently recording his majorlabel debut for A&M, tentatively scheduled for aJune release. MacIsaac is currently on the RPM 100

in the ranks of the Canadian members at NARM,which was prompted by Tom Lewis, who praisedBARD's affiliation with NARM.

"Tom Lewis basically said thatcompetition is competition and that we will alwayshave competition. He told the Canadians to take along hard look at ourselves, asking where we thinkwe are going to be in the next five to ten years. Hereminded us that our business is slowly beinggrabbed away from us. And that's an issue we willhave to face. The record clubs are definitely grabbingmarket shares. This is something that's becoming abig issue. Considering the amount of advertisingdollars being spent by both clubs today, I don't thinkthe Canadian retailers and rack jobbers could evermatch the dollars they are spending in one month."

Kennedy maintains a note of optimismwith regard to the association. He stresses th ;emergence of BARD and what that British

Kevin Campbell namedEpic product managerBob Campbell, senior vice-president of marketingfor Sony Music Canada has announced theappointment of Kevin Campbell to the position ofproduct manager, Epic Records, effective March 13,1995. Campbell will report to Faye Perkins, directorof Epic Records.

In his new position, Campbell will beresponsible for product management of EpicRecords International artists in Canada.

Campbell joined Sony Music in 1990 asan account service representative and later waspromoted to a sales representative at Sony Music'sToronto branch office.

association went through in its fledgling years."The way it was described was that they

have a lot of competition. HMV is part of theassociation over there. Tower Records is part of theassociation, and even the Woolworth's companywhich apparently does about 28 per cent of the totalbusiness. And a lot of independents are members ofthe British group. A lot of the things the associationhas done has bettered the independent marketplace.

"I don't know how many independentretailers there are in Canada, but we intend to go outand get as many as possible to join our association."

Kennedy stressed that he isn't heading upthe new association. "I'm going to concentrate onits organization. Once I get all these people together,I'll let someone else take over. I was the presidentof the association, but maybe it's time for someoneelse to take over, somebody new. It can be somebodywho doesn't own the company, but who works for acompany. Maybe if we take the owners out of thepicture and let the people who work for us put ittogether we might have a decent shot at it.

"I think we can take a page out of theworkings of the British association where themajority rules, and that was the important buzz wordthat came down from Mr. Lewis. We can make ourcomments and have our arguments, but when itcomes to a vote, that's what we have to stick with,the majority rules. It might sound like it's a hardline, but it's working in other countries and it shouldwork here. It's has to benefit everyone, and that'sthe bottom line. Hey, we got to start somewhere."

Neill Dixon has offered a suite for theassociation's first meeting during Canadian MusicWeek. The meeting will be open to all retailers andrack jobbers. The time and date will be announcedshortly.

Rankin Family releaseGrey Dusk Of Eve EPAs a special thank you to their exceedingly loyalfan base, EMI artist The Rankin Family has releaseda limited edition five -track EP, entitled Grey DuskOf Eve.

The feature track on the EP is the titletrack, which is essentially a new version of a long-time concert favourite, Leis An Lurgainn (The BoatSong), a song which originally appeared on theRankin's 1993 album, North Country. The newversion features Cookie Rankin in a duet withHothouse Flowers' lead vocalist, Liam O'Maonlai.

The EP also includes a Jimmy Rankinoriginal entitled Malcolm Murray; Will You Go WithMe Mary, featuring Heather Rankin on lead vocals;Twin Fiddle Feature, which spotlights John MorrisRankin on fiddle; and the traditional Sir James Baird,which features Raylene Rankin on lead vocals.

The Rankins, who have now sold morethan one million albums in Canada, have justcompleted a successful tour of England and Scotland.The tour was launched in front of a sold -out crowdin Glasgow, where the group was one of theheadliners for the Celtic Connections Festival.

The group is currently preparing for a tourof Australia and New Zealand, where they are set toheadline the Guiness Festival Of Irish Music (Mar.12 - April 1). They will then head to the US for atwo -month tour in support of the American releaseof North Country. The album is being released inthe states through Guardian Records, a newly formedsubsidiary of EMI Records Group North America.

No background ... ? Isn't it strangethat when you get away from homebase,something like 2,000 miles, you canenjoy the damnedest eye-openingconversations with people you seepractically every week when you'reat home. We got into a discussionabout people coming into the businesswith no background. That's right NO '-

BACKGROUND! It got me thinking. with Elvira CapreeseOver the past few years, there has beentremendous growth within the industry. A lot of thenew people were quick to pick RADIO as the enemy.They were the "street -smart" people. Like the oldflower children days when every record companyhad a resident hippie. "They must know what's goingon, or they wouldn't dress or smell like that," seemedto be the reasoning. Anyway, back to the present.Have you noticed the resentment toward radio haseven extended into the upper reaches of the executivelevel? I was told, just recently by one of these types,that RADIO lagged behind word-of-mouth and in-store play, when it came to breaking hits. Well, don'tbelieve it. RADIO is still the most important vehicleavailable in breaking hits. Sure, the broadcastindustry kind of shot itself in the foot, watering downall those important formats for gold and oldies, butthe music industry would be hard-pressed withoutRADIO. What we need in this country are moreTriple A stations like The River in Windsor/Detroit.Warren Cosford should get some kind of nationalrecognition for bringing life back to those fourCHUM stations in Windsor. He has also opened avery important door southward for Cancon. (EC:The REAL do-ers in the business are rarely

recognized . . . !)

Garth to The Empire Club . . . ! I guessyou know you've made it when you're asked to speakat The Empire Club. Garth Drabinsky, who The NewYorker has tagged "A Canadian Ziegfeld", isscheduled as the guest speaker for March 27 at theRoyal York Hotel's Concert Hall. The Tony award -winning producer has co -written an autobiography,Closer To The Sun, with Marq de Villiers. This is aluncheon not to be missed. Call 416-364-5590 forreservations. (EC: Not to be missed . . . !)

Another new CD plant . . . ? Get set foranother CD software plant to be opened in Canada.The capacity far exceeds the company's needs, whichmeans other labels can shop and compare. Could bethat with the added competition, prices just mightgo down. (EC: They're the lowest in the worldalready, so they tell me . . .

Mixing and mastering . . . ? There wasmore than a little concern about my comments on"Produced wholly in Canada," which appeared inlast week's column. That P for producer is veryimportant, particularly if the copyrights are foreign.Just to bring you up to date, the Canadian musicruling, which became law on June 24, 1970,specifically states that in order to qualify as beingproduced in Canada, the live performance must bewholly recorded in Canada. Now, that was beforehigh-tech entered the picture. Sure, there was alwaysmixing and mastering, but all usually done at thesource, where the single or album was recorded. Nowthere are mixing studios and mastering geniuses who

attract the hit -seekers, all over the world. Checkingwith the CRTC, they have to admit that policing

the source of mastering or mixing wouldbe impossible. So, they are content with

being adamant only about the liverecording, which must be whollyrecorded in Canada. But don't try tosneak in any bed tracks or vocaloverdubs done in Nashville orwherever. (EC: Now, what's the good

news . . . ?)

Big Bill is moving on ... ! Watch for newsof BB selling out his shares in that hugeentertainment conglomerate he help launch a long,long time ago. His metabolism must be slowingdown. He's beginning to bulge a bit. So the good-time eating habit will have to be controlled. (EC:How can he break that habit . . . ?)

A funeral is no excuse . . . ? Shockingnews about the firing of KM. What a dynamo she is,and what a flimsy excuse for getting rid of her.Whoever did the firing will eat her words. (EC: Oh!You know who it was . . . ?)

The booker took a bath . . . ? Not tomention any names, but the booker/promoters whobooked that huge and very costly act just recently,pulled a good audience, but took a huge bath. Theyhave another extravaganza coming up, but these twoguys are pussycats compared to that other lot, sothey just might make a buck, or at least break even.(EC: I've got the picture . . . !)

Never at a loss for words . . . ! It justamazes me how reviewers come up with classic linesin describing a show. Take Tommy for instance.CFRB's Jeremy Brown must have stayed up all nightto come up with his findings on Tommy. "7.4 on theRichter scale . . . simply relentlessly compellinglythrobbingly magnetic!" Can you imagine! This guysin his '60s I'm sure, but he's obviously young atheart. The next day, the reviewers were out in forcewith their quotes in the dailies. Dick Smyth, who isnever at a loss for words, must have been blownaway. He wrote, "I witnessed an almost instinctivestanding ovation ... The audience was instantly anduniversally on its feet." Richard Ouzounian of CBCRadio, went on a word tirade as well with "Tommy. . . you're terrific! A sensation . . . An explosion ofmusic and colour that will positively blow yourmind." The Globe's H.J. (Jack) Kirchhoff was beinga little cautious, maybe because the Toronto Startook a dig at him the previous day. Anyway,Kirchhoff tagged the show as "Brilliant . . . aknockout." The Toronto Sun's John Coulbourn,perhaps one of the most respected of all Torontoreviewers, came up with one of his usual, direct -to -the -point, no fooling critiques, ***** (out of five).Great stuff. And don't quote me, but Tommy willbecome a resident of lower Yonge Street for at leasttwo years. Take a look at that photo spread this week.(EC: Your ego's showing. You're in three shots!)

Tony Bennett cares . . . ! Did you noticewhen Tony Bennett went up to accept his Grammyaward, he was wearing Variety's heart in his lapel?He's a great supporter of Variety, particularlyToronto's Tent 28. He donated one of his paintingsa couple of years ago, and it brought in a lot of bucks

for Variety's Kids. More of the entertainment peopleshould get involved in helping the kids. Evenspending just a couple of bucks for a heart andwearing it on your sleeve or in your lapel can sendan important message. Helping others is good forthe soul. (EC: It's good for the career too . . .

Hear Me! Hear Me ... ! Now is this professionaljealousy or is this professional jealousy? It seemsthat we were allowed to hear a preview tape, YES,TAPE, of a born-again superstar. The other guyseither weren't in or weren't interested until they sawour comments in print. Lucky them. They get ours,but we don't get theirs. Anyway,they gave a very nice guy a very hard time. (EC:Figures . . .

Academy formed to bring industry into Junos

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of CARAS. The Canadian Academy OfRecording Arts And Sciences was founded by Stan Klees, co-founder and producer of the JunoAwards, in order to allow the recording industry to have input into presenting the awards ontelevision.

Mel Shaw was appointed the first president of the academy. He headed up a committeewhich was comprised of 1st vice-president Leonard Rambeau, 2nd vice-president Ross Reynolds,secretary -treasurer Brian Robertson, and directors Greg Hambleton, Martin Onrot and GeorgeStruth.

In order to help bring the Junos into the television age, Klees entered into negotiationswith CB C -Television' s John Barnes and Jim Guthro. With the objective being to hold the show ina theatre setting, Klees negotiated with the Canadian National Exhibition's general manager DavidGarrick to hold the show in the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

The original CARAS committee was given the responsibility of selecting the awardsthat would be televised, establishing the criteria by which performers would be selected to appearon the program, and to introduce a new concept of voting and nominations. John Thomson wasretained as producer and director of the show, working in cooperation with Klees.

As the academy and CBC-TV are preparing once again to present what should be amemorable 1995 Juno broadcast, RPM spoke with some of the past CARAS presidents, to gaintheir thoughts and insights on their tenures.

MEL SHAWFounding President (1975 - 1977)CARAS Advisory Board (1977 - 1994)As the first president of CARAS, I was a participantwith a dynamic combination of music industrypeople who were very passionate about Canadianartists creating recorded music.

I recall in the early days, before theacademy was formed, that there were individualswho were very vocal about strongly supporting theheritage and traditions established by Walt Grealisand Stan Klees.

I am proud to say that I was among thesupporters, along with Leonard Rambeau, JackRichardson, Greg Hambleton, George Struth, JohnMills and Harold Moon. There were also manyothers who held the belief that the tradition mustcontinue, and so it has.

The task of heading up the organizationtakes time and commitment and all those who havefilled the position deserve the industry's thanks. Inparticular, appreciation must go to the pastpresidents, Brian Robertson, Leonard Rambeau,Peter Steinmetz and Dave Charles, and the currentpresident, Lee Silversides.

The link through each presidency has beenDaisy Falle, who put her heart and soul into the

awards from the very beginning. Each of thesepeople has my admiration for facing the difficultiesof 'the times' and for their continuation in honouringthe tradition established by the original foresight ofWalt Grealis and Stan Klees.

The 1995 Juno Awards will no doubt beoutstanding and I am proud to be an academymember.

LEONARD RAMBEAUPresident (June - November 1977)I can still remember the meeting in my apartmentwith Mel Shaw and Brian Robertson and a coupleof other people. I was deeply involved in AnneMurray's career and I was a little apprehensive oftaking on any more responsibilities. I knew theorganization had a plan and an agenda of its own,and that taking on the job as president would be abig responsibility.

Fortunately, now that I look back, I wassmart enough to call a spade a spade, because one

wonders and will wonder, how things for them andfor me would turn out.

I was also fortunate enough to be able tofind the time and the energy for the job. Theorganization was in its embryonic stage, and

stretching to see what direction it would go. It wasaround that time too that they decided to take theJunos to the public with the television show.

Looking back, I think the success ofCARAS and the Junos began with the advent of thetelevision show. It was the beginning of the Canadianstar system. And it's encouraging to see today, thatwhen a Juno nominee or winner is introduced onvarious television shows, and I know fromexperience with the Rita & Friends show, that itdoesn't have to be qualified.

I think the Canadian public is aware ofwhat the Junos are. There is an awareness that theJunos are awards from the industry. And I think inturn, by having the Junos, it made people aware ofthe music industry, let alone the entertainmentindustry.

We were fortunate too that Anne Murraywas an established star, and a great vehicle forpromoting the Junos. We were hotter than a pistol atthat time.

I was relieved when my tenure was up andthat my reputation was accepted and still intact.Relief is the word. Bascially I am very pleased as tohow the book has unfolded on both CARAS and theJunos. The talent we parade today on the Junos isthe result of the dedication and devotion so manypeople had in creating a star system in the beginning.

BRIAN ROBERTSONPresident (1977 - 1983)I was involved in the initial set-up of the academy,back in the early to mid '70s. There were a handfulof us, including Leonard Rambeau and Mel Shaw,who wanted to create an organization that wouldendeavour to build a stronger star system in Canada.

What we did, I suppose, was lay thefoundation for what has subsequently been built onthose early pioneering efforts. When we started theprocess, there really wasn't a true national industryin Canada in the early '70s. It was a lot of fragmented,regional pockets, nothing really held the whole thingtogether.

We saw the opportunity that the Junoscould be a national television vehicle, which wouldendeavour to start pulling those pockets together intoone industry, and I think from that point of view wesucceeded.

CARAS' mandate is to maximize theopportunities the Junos offer, first and foremost.Once they've done that, there are other objectives todeal with, but I think the Junos are the #1 priority.

I still think they're fulfilling the mandate.There's been some hiccups along the way, but I thinkthat's inevitable in an organization like that. But it

will continue to find its own levels of efficiencywhich it is doing. In Lee Silversides' hands, it'llprobably be in as good a shape as it's ever been.

In terms of this year and subsequent years,I think it's very satisfying that Copps Coliseum issold out, because there was some apprehension abouttrying to sell 8,000 tickets. But it appears they'vedone that very successfully.

Politics comes with the territory, and it'spart and parcel of what that job is. Lee came andsaw me before he took the job, and he was well awareafter we talked of what that job is. It's not an easyjob, you have to balance so many disparate areas ofthe business. With areas of self-interest, you'reconstantly walking a tightrope. It's a difficult thingto balance, but Lee seems to be finding the rightbalance.

It's an organization that relies an awfullot on volunteer time, so you need to rely on thegenerosity of many different aspects of the business.It has certainly fulfilled its original mandate, it justneeds to be kept on an even keel to keep it goinginto the future.

I don't see any loss of support for whatCARAS is doing. We still need a national televisionvehicle to expose the music and the artists. The jobis even more difficult now because when we startedout, you didn't really have to fight 50-60 channels.In the late '70s we regularly got 2 to 2.2 millionviewers for that show. Since then, the televisionuniverse has been expanded, so it's quite easy forthe audience to get diluted, which it has done to somedegree. But there's still a need for that window.

DAVE CHARLESPresident (1992-1994)Charles contacted RPM from his new home inAustralia to offer a few thoughts:

It's great to see such a strong music scene in Canada.It's the opposite down here (in Australia). We'reexperiencing a bit of a lull.

We had been working on trying to get theJunos in an arena setting for quite a while. It's great

to see it finally happening. Copps Coliseum is aterrific venue. I mean Phil Collins, Aerosmith andmany other artists have performed there, so it trulyis a world -class facility. There really isn't anythingcomparable in Toronto.

When you're working on the Junos, thereare so many different people that you have to tryand keep happy. It's an impossible task. I'mdelighted to see that this year's show is going sowell. It looks as though it is going to be a wonderfulshow. I really hope they get great numbers.

SASS JORDANAccording to Sass Jordan, "Absolutely anythingyou can think of, I've done, I am, I wanna be." It'sa typically bold statement from this gutsy rock androller whose powerful voice has quickly become amainstay on theCanadian music scene.Jordan was born inBirmingham, England,but came to Canada atan early age. Raised inMontreal, Jordan firstsurfaced as a bassplayer in one of thecity's top club acts ofthe time, The Pinups.When that groupdissolved, she helddown a series of jobs,including televisioninterviewer, beforelanding a spot asbacking vocalist forThe Box, one of Canada's top bands in the late '80s.Jordan's famed pipes can be heard on The Box'sbiggest hit, Closer Together. In late 1988, Jordan

released her debut album, Tell Somebody, whicheventually soared to platinum sales in Canada,boosted by the success of such songs as the titletrack (which hit #20 on the RPM Hit Tracks chart),So Hard, Double Trouble and Stranger In Paradise.

The album also led toJordan's 1989 Juno win asmost promising femaleartist. Jordan's growingsuccess led to a move to LosAngeles for the recording ofher second album, Racine.The move was necessitatedbecause her manager, LisaJanzen, was an L.A.resident, was was her newAmerican label, Impact/MCA. While in L.A.,Jordan recorded a duet withJoe Cocker for TheBodyguard soundtrack, andopened up a tour with theArc Angels. Racine (a

french word for roots) was an appropriate title, asJordan included several songs about her Canadianupbringing. The success of the Racine album led

to a spot on Bryan Adams' Waking Up The Nationtour, along with Steve Miller and Extreme. Jordan'slatest effort, Rats, kept perfectly in step with thered-hot grunge and alternative sounds of today.Produced by Jordan, Steve Salas and Nick Didia(engineer for Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots),it also established Jordan as perhaps the hardestrocking female voice in music today.

MICHELLE WRIGHTThis Chatham, Ontario native's love of country musicbegan when, as a young girl, she tagged along to showsby both her mother and father, who were local countryperformers. Wright first began playing music in the

garage where her mother's band rehearsed, firstlearning the drums, and eventually the guitar. By hermid -teens, Wright was playing in local bands,eventually able to show off her husky lead vocals.After high school, Wright toured the US and Canada,and in 1988 released her debut album, Do Right ByMe, on the Savannah label. Endless live appearancescaught the attention of Nashville -based Arista

Records, and Wright became one of the first artistssigned to the label. Her 1990 self -titled album garneredrave reviews from country critics and produced thetop 30 singles New Kind Of Love (#4), Woman'sIntuition (#14), All You Really Wanna Do (#9), AHeartbeat Away (#21) and Not Enough Love To GoAround (#20). It was Wright's second album forArista/BMG, Now & Then, that really catapulted herinto country stardom, producing five #1 hits; Take ItLike A Man, He Would Be Sixteen, Guitar Talk, OneTime Around and the title track. Take It Like A Manalso hit the top 10 in the US country charts, and becamea #1 video at CMT and TNN. The Academy Of

Country Music named Wright the top new femalevocalist in 1993, and back home in Canada, she pickedup no less 15 awards based on the success of Now &Then, including CCMA enteratiner of the year, BigCountry Awards' artist of the year and a Juno forcountry female vocalist. Now & Then eventuallyreached double platinum status in Canada. In 1994,Wright released her third album for Arista, TheReasons Why, produced by longtime friend SteveBogard, Val Garay, Mike Clute and John Guess.Wright, who is now a Nashville resident, is currentlyin the midst of a lengthy Canadian tour promotingthe album, which shipped gold in Canada.

JANN ARDENCalgary native Jann Arden has a very simple formulafor success: "Every time you take a step up, it seemsthat it's the right thing and should be happening thatway. If it doesn't feel right, then you just don't doit." Arden burst onto the Canadian music scene inFebruary of 1993 withthe release of her debutalbum, Time For Mercy.Following the release,Arden embarked on anarduous stretch oftouring to promote therecord, with showsacross Canada, the USand Europe. The endlesspromotion paid off, asArden acrued bothcritical and commercialsuccess for the record.Time For Mercyeventually achieved goldstatus in Canada, andearned Arden two JunoAwards: most promisingsolo performer and best video for I Would Die ForYou (directed by Jeth Weinrich). The stirring videofor that song was the one that really establishedArden at radio, with Weinrich going on to capturethe Canadian Music Video Award for best directorfor his work on that video. Will You Remember Metopped out at #10 on the RPM 100 Hits chart, IWould Die For You #13, and I'm Not Your Lover#35. In the summer of 1994, Arden released her

sophomore album, Living Under June, once againproduced by veteran Ed Cherney. The albumdisplayed Arden as an even more confident singerand songwriter, with a knack for getting intoemotions that few songwriters can touch. Despiteits somewhat eclectic sounding title, the name

actually refers to the factthat Arden was living in abasement apartmentunderneath a womannamed June, and was ableto hear, through the paperthin walls, the intimateconservations this womanhad. That intimacy isreflected in the songs, suchas the top five hit Could IBe Your Girl, Unloved (abeautiful duet withJackson Browne), GoodMother, and Insensitive (asong Arden picked up fromsongwriter Anne Lorree),which hit #1 on the RPMHit Tracks chart. Yet

despite the often serious nature of her lyrics, Arden'swit and self-effacing humour belie what could be asomber tone. The best indicator of the rapid rise tosuccess Arden has undertaken is in the impressivefive Juno nominations she's racked up this year, forbest single, (Could I Be Your Girl), songwriter, dancerecording (Could I Be Your Girl: Pablo Mix), video(Insensitive; directed by Jeth Weinrich) and ofcourse, female vocalist.

LOREENA McKENNITTGrowing up in Morden, Manitoba, LoreenaMcKennitt's original ambition was to be aveterinarian. Not a surprising career goal for thedaughter of a livestock dealer. Fortunately for musicfans, McKennitt soon trained her talents on music,starting out singing in folk clubs and musicaltheatres in and around her hometown. In the early'80s, McKennitt movedto Stratford, Ontario,where she worked as acomposer, actor andsinger with Canada'sfamed Shakespeareanfestival. EventuallyMcKennitt headed toToronto, where shehoned her harp and vocalskills anywhere shecould make a buck. Itwasn't long before shewas performing atexpositions overseas,writing film music andperforming at small

venues throughout Canada. It was in 1985 thatMcKennitt formed her own Quinlan RoadProductions, through which she recorded andreleased her first independent album, Elemental, acollection of traditional songs along with the poetryof Yeats and Blake set to music. Two years later,with Elemental having sold 30,000 units, McKennittrecorded a collection of holiday offerings, To Drive

The Cold Winter Away. In1989 she released her thirdalbum, Parallel Dreams,which has since gone goldin Canada. By the time herfourth album was ready forrelease, McKennittrealized that her ownQuinlan Road label was nolonger big enough to meetindustry demands. With therelease of The Visit cameMcKennitt's partnershipwith Warner MusicCanada, an agreement thatextends to more than 30countries worldwide. That

album has since gone double platinum in Canada,and sold 200,000 units in the US. McKennitt's latestrelease, The Mask And Mirror, expands on the celticthemes in The Visit, while also incorporatinginfluences from Spain, Morocco, medieval Franceand Normandy. The true testimony of the appeal ofthis artists comes in the fact that, despite little radiosupport, McKennitt continues to sell millions ofrecords worldwide.

JULIE MASSELike most music performers, Quebec native JulieMasse got her start early. It was in 1982, at the tenderage of 12 that Masse won her first singingcompetition, the same year she appeared in her firstmusical. In 1986, Masse met Serge Brouillette, whowould go on to become her manager and producer.Taking on numerous singing and dancing lessonsobviously paid off in the spring of 1990, whenMasse's debut single, C'est Zero, was released inQuebec. Later that same year, Masse's debut self -titled album was released, featuring four songs thathit the Francophone charts. In October of '90, Massesigned with Les Editions/Productions' Georges Maryfor European distribution of her album by BMG.That same month, Masse had a memorableperformance at the annual L'Adisq Gala, where shesang a medley of the year's best songs. Two monthslater, Masse appeared live on MusiquePlus, whereshe was awarded her first gold record for her debutalbum. That album would hit platinum shortlythereafter, with Masse being presented her platinumaward at the Quebec Colisee by hockey legend GuyLafleur. In September of '91, Masse signed withDonald K. Donald/CPI for concert promotions withProcter & Gamble announced as the tour's official

sponsors. That October, Masse won three FelixAwards; best new artist, best first album and femalesinger of the year. Masse released her second album,A Contre-Jour in May of '92, followed by a nationaltour that included a Canada Day performance inOttawa. In March of '93, Masse won the Juno formost promising female vocalist, while working onpre -production for her first English album in bothToronto and New York. In September of '94, OneMore Moment, Masse's first English -languagesingle, was shipped to radio, with writing andproducing credits going to long-time friend CoreyHart. A month later came the release of her firstEnglish -language album, Circle Of One, which hitgold within its first month of release.

BRUCE COCKBURNIn a career filled with 22 albums and countlessaccolades, Bruce Cockburn has always managed tokeep his fans and critics guessing. Cockburn's careerbegan in 1970 with the release of his self -titled debutalbum. Cockburn would go on to release an albumper year in the '70s, with both Night Vision andDancing In The Dragon's Jaws reaching gold statusin Canada. The Torontonative also picked up threeconsecutive Juno Awards(1971-73) as Canadianfolksinger of the year. The1980's began with yetanother Juno as top folkartist, while the 1980release of Humans quicklysoared over the goldplateau in Canada. JOHN McDERMOTTBorn in Glasgow, Scotland, John McDermott wasraised on a steady diet of his parent's love of music.McDermott's family was the largest to emigrate fromScotland to Canada en masse since the war, with all14 family members moving to Willowdale, Ontarioin 1965. John, the ninth of Peter and HopeMcDermott's 12 children was nine at the time hemoved to Canada. There is no doubting McDermott'sBritish Isles' heritage, with his paternal grandfatherbeing a Northern Irelander, and his maternalgrandfather being a

dockyard worker inGlasgow. After the familyarrived in Canada, Johnwas invited to attend St.Michael's Choir School inToronto. Through radio atthe time, McDermott wasexposed to some of theworld's finest tenors,including SydneyMacEwan, KennethMacKellar and JohnMcCormack.McDermott's first solorecording, Danny Boy,was a collection of

folk artist. 1983 saw the Dancing In The Dragon'sJaws album certified platinum, while Cockburnembarked on tours of central America, Australia andNew Zealand. In 1993,Cockburn performed atthe US PresidentialInaugural Ball, and laterreleased his Christmas

In the fall of 1994, McDermott released his

Christmas album, whichonce again utilized hisbeautiful tenor to bringnew light on some classicholiday songs.McDermott, who firstbecame known to manyCanadians throughsinging the nationalanthem at Maple Leafhockey games, has sincebecome a much sought-after artist from membersof the celtic musiccommunity. In the springof 1994, McDermotttoured across Canada

with The Chieftains, and recently recorded a duetwith Con O'Brien on the latest album from The IrishDescendants.

COLIN JAMESIt was in 1988 that Colin James burst onto theCanadian music scene with his debut album. It waspure rock and roll, and played with a zest and raucousattitude that few soft-spoken Canadians were usedto. James was a true triple threat artist: a talentedsongwriter, a raunchy singer, and a ferociousguitarist. Combining the three elements, James wasquickly stamped with the "can't -miss" label by criticsthroughout the country. That first album containedsongs that have since become staples at rock radioin this country: Five Long Years, Voodoo Thing,Chicks N' Cars and Why'd You Lie?, the latter ofwhich was turned into one of the more alluring videosin recent memory. Growing up in Winnipeg, andconsuming a steady diet of blues and classic rockand roll, James took the classic rock and roll soundand combined with an '80s energy, an energy thatcame across in spades in his dynamic live sets.Quickly following up on the success of that firstrelease, James released his sophomore album in1990, Sudden Stop, which featured the harder edgedcuts Keep On Lovin' Me Baby and Just Came Back.Since their release, both albums have gone on tosell more than 200,000 units in Canada alone. Aftertaking a brief hiatus from the music scene, Jamesreturned in 1993 with the album Colin James & TheLittle Big Band, James' ode to the great rock androllers of the fifties. The album became an instanthit among both old and new fans, crossing moredemographics in one album than most artists crossin their career. The album spawned several hits,including Cadillac Baby, Surely (I Love You) andNo More Doggin'. In Feb. of 1995, James announcedthat he was moving from his longtime home at VirginRecords to sign with Warner Music Canada. Virginrecently released James' final album for the label,Then Again, a compilation of his greatest hits, alongwith three new tracks.

NEIL YOUNGYoung began his musical foray back in the early'60s with a Winnipeg folk/rock outfit called TheSquires. After a brief Toronto sojurn, Young headedoff to Los Angeles, where he met up with StephenStills, and soon after Buffalo Springfield was born.After three albums and several incantations, Youngdeparted that group to begin his solo career. Afterreleasing his first album with Crazy Horse, 1969'sEverybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Young joinedCrosby, Stills & Nash in time for Woodstock. In themeantime, his solo career flourished with the release

of 1970's After The Gold Rush. He followed thatwith his finest achievement to date, Harvest,featuring his only #1 song, Heart Of Gold. Youngcontinued to pour out albums throughout the '70s,including such classics as Journey Through The Past,Time Fades Away, Long May You Run, Comes ATime and Rust Never Sleeps. In the '80s, Young'smusical vision took on several different points ofview, from the country sounds of Hawks & Doves,

to the techno sounds of Trans, even the rock and rollretro sound of Everybody's Rockin'. He was joinedonce again by Crazy Horse on the albums Reactorand Life, and took one more stab at Crosby, Stills &Nash with 1988's American Dream. The decadeended with one of his more electric albums yet,Freedom, featuring the anthemic Rockin' In The Free

Born in the #1 spot! Bruce Springsteen hasjumped immediately to the head of the class. Hisgreatest hits package debuts at #1. It knocks GreenDay out after an eight -week stay. It will be interestingto see if 1995 will produce as many instant smashalbums as last year. In 1994, five albums debuted inthe #1 spot: Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, TheTragically Hip, Nirvana and The Beatles.

Baby, he's the one. Elton John's return toPolyGram has been triumphant so far. Believe, thefirst release from his new album, makes the biggestjump on the Hit Tracks chart. It climbs a whopping55 places to #29. Only one song last year had a jumpof 50 spots. Roxette's Sleeping In My Car did it,but failed to hit #1, as it peaked at #2. In John'scareer, he has had 14 #1 hits. If Believe makes it tothe top, it would become just his second one -wordtitle to do so. Name his only one -word #1 hit.

Chasing the fab four. For the second straightweek, Madonna has the #1 song in Canada with TakeA Bow. Madonna ranks as the second mostsuccessful artist in RPM history with 15 #1 songs.The only artist with more #1s is The Beatles, whichhit the jackpot 18 times.

I beg your Arden . . . for that pun. Freshfrom her #1 smash Insensitive, Jann Arden is headedup the chart once again. The new release from herLiving Under June album, Wonderdrug, rises 38places to #47. The album also continues to ride highon the chart as it comes in at #11.

World. In 1991, Young first earned his 'godfatherof grunge' title with the alternative -edged album Arc.But just when he appeared to be set on a new course,Young again switched gears for 1992's HarvestMoon, a direct throwback to the great Harvest albumof 20 years earlier. Following the release of his

Unplugged album, he gained an Academy Awardnomination for the title track from the filmPhiladelphia. 1994 saw the release of Sleeps WithAngels, one of Young's most critically laudedalbums yet, and one that has landed him threenominations at this year's Junos.

ROCH VOISINEHad Roch Voisine not suffered a damaging injuryduring a junior hockey game, his career ambitionsmight have been just a bit different. Instead, Voisinedecided to focus his talents on the music business,and it has payed off in spades. Voisine first came tonational prominence after performing his first publicconcert before 50,000 people during the 1986 CanadaDay celebrations in Ottawa. A year later, Voisinelanded the hosting job for a weekly music -videoshow in Quebec called Videostar. He also starred ina television special called A Super Disney Specialon the TVA Network. In '88, Roch appeared eachweek on the Garden Party TV show, and inSeptember of that year, Voisine was given his ownprogram, Top Jeunesse. 1989 may have been thebreak-out year for Voisine internationally. Early inthe year, Voisine was chosen as a regular castmember in the popular TV series, He Shoots HeScores. Then in September, the album Helene wasreleased, featuring the hit title track that quicklybecame Voisine's signature song. The album wentdouble platinum, with Voisine touring more than 50centres in Quebec. He also grabbed four awards atthat year's L'Adisq Awards. Three weeks after itsrelease in France, Helene shot to #1, the firstCanadian release ever to do so. In 1990, Rochpromoted his second release, Double, by performingthree sold -out nights at the prestigious Zenith Theatrein Paris. By year's end, Double had sold more than300,000 copies. In 1991, Voisine received a diamondaward in France for sales of more than one million

The Hip hoppin'. Another Canadian act in asimilar situation as Jann Arden is The TragicallyHip. The Hip is also coming off a top 10 hit (GreasyJungle) and also has a release rising in just its secondweek. Nautical Disaster jumps 40 spots to #49.

Still going strong. It has been well over ayear since the release of Sarah McLachlan'sFumbling Towards Ecstasy. That album was in thetop five in 1993. It continues to do extremely wellnow in its 68th week on the chart. It is rising at #41.The Freedom Sessions also on the chart at #79.

Look who just came back. Colin Jamesmakes it a double entry this week. His greatest hitsalbum, Then Again, enters at #42. The first releasefrom that album, Stay, also makes an entry. It debutson at #87. The biggest hit of James' career was JustCame Back. That song reached #5 in 1990.

Reaching new heights. It hasn't taken SusanAglukark long to become a mainstay at radio. Sheappears headed for her first top 10 hit as 0 Siem is#13 with a bullet in it's eight week on the chart.Last year's Song Of The Land peaked at #55.

The retail scene. This week's list of the best-selling albums comes from the Music World storeon Calgary's McLeod Trail and reported by Corey

copies of Helene. Voisine continued to tourthroughout Europe, drawing enormous crowdswherever he played, but was still unable to breakout in English -Canada. That all changed with the1993 release of I'll Always Be There, Voisine's firstEnglish -language album, on the Star Records label.The album spawned a slate of charted singles,including the title track, Shout Out Loud, She PickedOn Me, Am I Wrong and Oochigeas, and has sincehit sales of 500,000 in Canada. In March of '94,Voisine hosted the Juno Awards, winning the topmale vocalist award that year. Most recently, Voisinereleased a new French -language album, Coup DeTete, which has since sold 175,000 copies in Canada.

Gargoyle movie releasean interactive endingEarly February, Disney's newest action heroesmotion picture, Gargoyles, was made available tovideo retailers across North America. Lauded asvisually stunning and dramatically stirring,Gargolyes premiered on television in a five -partmini-series, but otherwise has never been availablein its entirety.

Along with the huge promotional machineDisney provides, there is also an interactive gameincluded when purchasing Gargoyles which isexpected to elevate sales and generate consumerinterest. Dubbed as the first -of -its -kind interactiveVCR board game, the game runs for 20 minutes atthe end of the film.

Gargoyles (the game) guides the playersvia a narrator through he streets of New York -- in aquest to free the Gargoyles. Played in real time withthe video, each 20 -minute game is interrupted byvideo instructions that either reward or penalize theplayer who is moving at the time of the delay.

All game accessories are included with thepurchase of the video, which is specially packagedin a deluxe video box, distinct from other videoproducts to further enhance the buyers interest.

One Horse Blue have captured the #1 slot onthe RPM Country 100 with Hopeless Love. Thechart happening is timely in view of the band'scurrent tour with Arista's Michelle Wright andPatriot recording artist John Berry. The band is setto move into the eastern leg of its tour after havingplayed to several sold out houses in the west. Thevideo for Hopeless Love, which was produced inEdmonton by The New Picture Crew, was shippedout the first week of March.

Blue Rodeo makes the biggest gain on the chartthis week with Head Over Heels jumping into the#42 position from #61. This latest trackwas taken from the band's WEA album,5 Days In July. The album has alsogained a foothold on country retailcharts as well, and enters the RPMCountry album chart at #27. A newalbum is now in its post -productionstages.

Lisa Brokop's new single, OneOf Those Nights, is now at radio. Thisis an old Conway Twitty/Troy Sealspenning. The track is included onBrokop's Patriot album, Every LittleGirl's Dream, which was produced byJerry Crutchfield.

George FOX is set for a spring tourof western and central Canada. The touris in support of Fox's new WEA album,Time Of My Life. The debut single,What's Holding Me, bullets into the #8position on the RPM Country 100. Thevideo is also in hot rotation on the NewCountry Channel. The first leg of thetour kicks off in Alberta on March 17and wraps in Ontario on April 9. The 4-H Clubsacross Canada are also benefitting from the newrelease. The 38,000 -member organization is sellingthe album on a one-on-one campaign with apercentage going to 4-H.

COUNTRYThe band's latest Arista release, Don't Cry LittleAngel, enters the chart at #74. The track is includedon the Only One Moon album, which is chalking upgood sales at retail. The new release, written by KeithGlass, is the follow-up to Black -Eyed Susan, whichwas written by the band's keyboardist Joan Besenand EMI recording artist Ron Hynes. Both tracksare included on the Only One Moon album whichwas produced by Steve Fishell. The album is alsochalking up good sales at retail.

Kenny Hess is emerging as apowerhouse. The young BC cowboyrecently released his album, Welcome ToLonesome, to rave reviews. The titletrack, a Hess original, has been releasedas a Radio CD single. Released on theKate & Becca label, the Hess -producedalbum was recorded in Nashville. Mostof the tracks are Hess originals. He co -wrote Nature Of The Beast with RonIrving, who wrote Anne Murray'sBluebird hit a few years ago. He also co -wrote Together Here We Stand with TeriHess. Most tracks are three-part Cancon(MAL). Watch for an upcoming albumreview. Hess has two other previouslyreleased albums, A Call From Home andBack To Reality, still available.

some tire -kicking in New Zealand, he returns to Canada to launch an extensive Canadian tour which

will begin in the maritimes. Valdy is currently on release with When Peace Came To The Valley, a

track taken from his Peg Music album Heart At Work.

Mary Beth Sippin, who was first introduced to Canadian radio in May of 1994 via Roto Noto's

CD compilation Broadcast Euphoria and on the following compilation CD Ga-Do-Wah, makes it complete with the release of her album debut, Back

In My Hometown. The album was produced by

fellow -American Michael Terry, in consort with Sippin and Wayne Gamache. Terry has enjoyed much success in Canada through his Roto Noto

releases. The album was recorded at Michael Terry Studios in Trumbull, Connecticut. The title track, written by Gamache and Laszlo Nemeth, has been

taken as the first single. The album is available through IDAC, nationwide (1-800-563 -Radio).

Sippin has already turned more than a few heads in Nashville after a recent performance at the Grand

Ole' Opry.

D.W. James is the new houseband at The Saloon in Toronto. The Calgary -born country funster moves in and out of the audience with the use of a wireless

Wright, Prescott/Brown scheduled for TNN showing The Nashville Network (TNN) has scheduled

appearances by two of Canada's top country recording acts.

Michelle Wright is the featured guest artist

on The Statler Bros. Show on March 18. The Statlers, Harold and Don Reid, Phil Balsley and Jimmy

Fortune, will introduce Wright's performance of We've Tried Everything Else, which is her next US release, and the song that is expected to break Wright

in the US. Wright, in the middle of a coast -to -coast,

37 -date Canadian tour, is currently on release with Safe In The Arms Of Love. The song, which enters

the RPM Country 100 this week at #87, is not Cancon. The song was written by Pat Bunch, Mary

Ann Kennedy and Pam Rose. Both songs are included on her Arista album, The Reasons Why.

The other date is for Prescott/Brown, which was scheduled for the March 3rd edition of Music City Tonight. Unfortunately there wasn't

enough lead-in time to properly promote the show through the trade press. The show is hosted by

Lorianne Crook and Charlie Chase. The Epic trio, formerly known as Tracey Prescott & Lonesome

Daddy, are currently charting with Broken String Of Pearls, which made an amazing recovery this

week coming out as the big gainer, up to #30 from

Debut Album... "Back In My Home.
