    ologue

    t Of The Norm

was a small town, the kind where all the houses look alike except for t

ray of colors. Everyone knows their neighbors, and old ladies

ther at the local beauty shop to discuss the latest gossip while trying

sh the young ones into marriage and children. A typical friendly

ce, the one anyone would find in a laid back romance movie but on thisht it wasn't so typical, and it wasn't a movie.

moke and sirens wreaked the night air, and a lady covered in soot and g

s carried out of her house in the arms of a fireman. All

e neighbors gathered around the many cars and trucks to watch the ho

aze, the lights and fire reflecting in their teary eyes.

e story of the lady was the most interesting though. She went to thesement to do her nightly exercise when a fire started on the top

or in the kitchen. All she could remember was the clouding smoke and

at that caught her attention, but before she could reach the door, the

p floor had caved in. The fireman probed for more information as she s

the edge of the emergency vehicle wrapped tightly in a rough wool

nket, but they were convinced she must have inhaled too much smoke.

e could survive that, there had to be a reasonable explanation.tterings passed around that sounded like it must have been a "miracle

t the lady considered it luck, and vowed to get another

oke alarm once she was out of the hospital. For her, it was a second

    ance.

the rush not one of the police officers, paramedics, firemen, or crying

mily members noticed past the black smoke, a dark figurehouetted against the midnight sky.

me people called them miracles, angels or fate. Others ignored the fa

at any of those things could be real. If they ever knew the

uth, they wouldnt believe it, denying like they do everything out of the

alm of "norm." But if any of them looked past their fear to something

ferent, beyond the disaster, they could see them.

night the air was cool, and sprinkling with rain. The soft pattering aga

e roof and windows. A comforting sound for sleeping. Vivian

ans loved the fall weather, especially at night. The leaves were growing

ad, and falling, cracklin beneath the feet of walking adults, kids, and

    uples. Not cold, nor hot.

un, I wish you wouldnt leave in this weather, Vivians mother, Julie Evpeared by the door separating the kitchen from the living

om. It was a small wooden house with no upstairs or basement, and one

lway with three tiny rooms, one of them being Vivians when she

s younger. Wow, that made her sound old. She was only nineteen.

e pulled on her light-weight jacket that whistled annoyingly whenever

ved her arms. Mom, its not pouring down rain! Theresrely wind out there!

tside the windows the night could clearly be seen. The leaves from th

k tree in the front yard didnt budge and the dirt road was

ht brown, not yet entirely darkened by the rain. Tiny drops of water f

e shower fell from her light brown hair that reached slightly below he

oulders. It would chill her tonight.

    s. Evans picked tiny pieces of lint off of her daughters jacket. Whynt you spend the night?

vian had to smile. It was just like her mother, not wanting to let her le

er since Vivian became. Different than she used to be, her

    m always worried.

have to get back to the Underground. Ill be fine! Promise. she hugge

r, kissing her on the cheek, and turned around to leave.ght when she grasped the doorknob her mother spoke again.

left you something from them on the passenger side.

kay. Vivian slammed the door behind her.

e didnt bother looking in the passenger side, instead she got in the ca

d pushed the key in the ignition. She let the wind numb her

ce as she drove in her metallic blue jeep along the empty roadway, the

st flying up beside the doors. Every now and then she would glance

at the full moon hiding behind some trees. It almost looked as though

ws had slashed across the moon leaving black streaks behind.

oking at the rearview mirror she saw no one behind her, and she press

r foot down onto the pedal speeding up. Her hair flew

hind her, cooling her neck. Her eyes closed for a moment but opened

ckly when she thought of all the trees along the way. She laughed.

aybe it wasnt laughing in the face of danger, but laughing to pretendthing bothered her. That her life could just be this. The roar of the

gine, and her speeding. But it wasnt.

thout looking she felt around the passenger seat, and felt something s

d bulging under her fingertips. There it was. She caught it

tween her fingers, and looked at the scrawled writing on the front of

velope.tter now than never, she thought, and slowed to a stop at the side of t

ad. With a turn of a key she shut off the engine. Nothing but

ence. It was perfect. Vivian ripped open the letter with her nail, and re

    herself:

    vian,

e can only hope that you are doing well. We know you will come back

meday to us, normal, like you used to be. Those weree days! You were so sweet, and had nothing to do with the nonsense yo

al with now. Remember how you used to love to play

pscotch out on the sidewalk with your friends? And those ribbons tied

ur hair were so adorable. We cant wait for the day you will

    me back. We love you.

ve, The Familyso in the envelope was a small wallet picture of a young girl in a long

ndress and a ponytail tied with yellow ribbons. The girl had a

de smile as she lied on her stomach, legs crossed, piecing together a

zzle, glancing up at the camera. Behind her was another girl sticking

t her tongue with a half smile.

ght in her hand the picture began to burn from her fingertips. Sudden

ht sparks burst into flames. She pursed her lips angrily, the

ht reflecting in her eyes menacingly. Then just as quickly as it had

arted, the flames died and the picture was gone.

e anger flowed to her fist and Vivian hit the dashboard. How dare the

e idiots! Thinking I would go back! Never will I go back to

em. They may still call me family, but they are not family to me, she

ought as she pounded the dashboard. What kind of family throws one

their own outside of the house? But again. She wasnt like them anymey havent come to accept that. They still talked about the

pscotch games, and ribbons. She seemed so innocent then, and not the

eak they saw her as now. Yeah. Those were the days..

e ripped the letter to shreds throwing them out of the open window. T

ft blowing wind blew the pieces away scattering them in all

ections. I have no family, she thought silently. Though her eyes told hferent. They gave her away as they always did, stinging with tears

e leaned against the steering wheel sobbing. Squeezing her eyes tightl

e hoped it would stop, but soon the tears ran down her cheeks and

e wiped them away with the sleeve of her jacket,.

the corner of her eye she saw something. It looked like a long shadow

ck dog sneaking toward a shack to her right. The shack

s barely standing, and the boards of the walls were losing their nails. Tof was slightly caved in as well. The whole place was ancient. Who

uld go in there? She squinted her eyes to see better, but it was still a

adow, and yet a very familiar one. Vivian leaned across the seat

ding onto the steering wheel for support. No! It couldnt be! Not now!

en at that moment a bloodcurdling scream of a man erupted from the

ack along with sounds of growling and howling. What the heck?en with the sound of a loud crash the shack shook as though someone

en thrown against the wall. The whole building threatened to

pple at any moment as a second crash reached her ears, and the shack

    ngerously shook again.

vian lifted herself up and over the jeep door forgetting about the lett

d her tears. She ran towards the shack, her hand palm out in

ont of her. She could barely hear her footsteps over the racket that w

ng made. She wondered, was it a murder? She side kicked the door

en causing it to almost fall off its hinges.

e scanned the only room in the shack. It would have been pitch black i

t for the moon trying to break its way through the grimyndows. It must have been many years since anyone stepped inside and o

e rare occasion that they did, like Vivian was now, they had not

thered to fix it. But why would they when the shack was beyond repair

e boards creaked under her feet as she took a couple steps forward. S

st hoped the floor would be able to hold long enough for her

find out the mystery of the sounds resembling a fight.one seemed to be there except for her. All she could hear was the so

her faltering breath and heart pounding in her chest. She

ew she heard something. Maybe it was an animal fighting over territor

e backed up a couple of steps to the door, but something whipped

st her legs and she gasped tripping backwards to the floor landing har

r back. She kept her head up to keep it from colliding painfully

th the floor, but did nothing for her back which she could already feeluised.

ross the shack, two golden eyes stared at her fiercely. She held her

eath so she could hear every sound and the fact that she was

ared. Who are you? She announced hearing her voice echoing back.

e animal took a couple of steps forward and showed its face in the ligh

om outside. Black mangled fur that hid the sleek muscles withtride that showed a winners pride. She knew it.

et out of here, Astrid! Vivian yelled to the wolf, dust falling from the

ling at the level of her voice, and she stood, wiping the thick dust

f her. Astrid growled and she could swear that she was almost grinning

    gusted Vivian.

said get out of here. Go back to the Underground. Get! Vivian's foot

hed to take a step towards her, but she stood her ground as

ough her feet were permanently glued to the stop.

trid continued to smirk, and slowly advanced on her. Vivian stood strai

r shoulders back, staring her in the eyes. She knew that

trid would take that as a challenge, and Vivian was ready. She raised h

nd against the wolfs face feeling the sweet magic flowing through

r veins, but she stopped it at her palm intending not to use it unless A

de the first move. And she did.th a fierce leap Astrids muscles, gleaming in the window light, tried t

e Vivians arm. Vivian moved her foot to the right, aimed her

nd directly at Astrid, and released her magic upon her.

trid flew back onto her side sliding halfway across the room. It took h

time to recover and she was on her feet once more showing

r sharp teeth, crimson blood smeared across them. Vivian suddenly felk knowing that Astrid had bitten someone, unsure if that person

    s dead or alive.

ome on, Astrid. You are so keen to fight with me, lets see what you go

vian pushed her shoulders back again, looking defiant, this

me lowering her hand. It was a dangerous option for anyone in her place

e wanted Astrid to think she had some gain, to believe she could

ssibly top Vivian.re enough, Astrid came at a run, kicking up dust around her shaggy leg

vian merely side stepped letting Astrid crash into the wall

    th a soft thud.

trid composed herself slightly shaking her head, and staring at Vivian

ow growl. Vivian knew it wasnt just anger at Vivian in

ole, it was the fact that she wouldnt fight back to her full strength.m not going to harm you. Its not what Maeve would have wanted.

trid growled louder giving the message that she had not favored Maev

e same way Vivian had. But Astrid brushed past Vivians

s running out the door. Though confused, Vivian let out a sigh of relief

owing that it was over for now. But there had been a lot of racket for

st Astrid. And she had blood on her teeth.... She had to be fighting

    meone.

vian walked further into the room, and looked around. The walls

rrounding her were rotted and there was the must of morning air. It

ve off a light stench and she covered her crinkled nose with the end o

r sleeve continuing to look around. Each of the corners were in

mplete darkness and there was no way to tell if any of them were hidin

cret without moving the toe of her boot around to feel for

mething.ere had to be someone else. Sure enough there was! Hidden behind th

or was a man lying on his back, arms spread. She hurried

kneel at his side. Blonde spiked hair and strong broad shoulders, he lo

e an angel. She ran her fingers over his soft cheek and down

    jaw

s jeans and button down shirt were torn, and blood covered the scratcunds.. It was then that she saw the scarred tissue of his

ck. Her eyes widened as she gaped at the blood trailing its way down h

ck and onto the floor spilling into a small puddle. He had been

    ten.

vian looked over to the door, half expecting the wolf to be standing th

cking her. Damn you, Astrid! She yelled to the empty

orway, her voice echoing off the walls and more dust falling off theling. She ran her hand over his hair sympathetically. Damn you!

teen miles away was the cheapest motel in the world. The faucets too

n seconds to kick in, lights didn't work, blankets were scratchy

d there was no heat. But it provided a place to sleep for the night withurdy roof overhead, at least it looked sturdy. It was much better than

    e rotting shack.

vian lifted the man through the open window of the room so questions

uldnt be raised by lazy workers in the lobby. After she carefully

d him on the bed, which creaked in protest, she pulled up a desk chair

him. She was tired and her knees ached from the pressure of

rrying this stranger so she rubbed them with the heel of her hands.

his pockets she found a leather wallet. Inside was a couple of crinkled

lars, a credit card and a drivers license. The strangers name

s Seth Martin. She glanced at him. Yeah.... He looked like a Seth. A sm

ile crept across her lips. She slid the card back in the wallet and

t it aside on the nightstand.

th's face and arms grew dark for a split second, and were suddenly ba

e next. He shook from the change that overtook his body asough he had been dumped in a tub full of ice despite the pile of blanke

vian heaped on him trying to keep his body warm.

vian had heard about this happening to humans, but shed never witness

She wished she could tear her eyes away, but she

uldn't. Bile rose in her throat, and she covered her eyes with her hand

ke deep breaths Vivian. It will be okay. She felt like she was going tosick.

nning behind part of a wall that separated the bedroom from the

throom she leaned over the sink. It took a while for the water to kick

but once it did she splashed it over her face. It dripped off of her ch

ckling down her neck and chest. Slowly breathing in through her nose,

e calmed. She splashed her face again taking in the stuffy air of the m

o her lungs. She no longer felt sick. For a moment the coldness ofe room had numbed everything. For one moment she forgot about the m

hind the wall. That is until he mumbled.

vian showed herself from behind the wall and leaned against it watchin

m from the other side of the room. He twisted and turned

ngling the flowered blankets with his legs like he was having a bad drea

couldn't wake up from. She crossed her arms waiting. It must benful. It was painful for her too, but not in the same way. With one las

udder Seth woke. His eyes fluttered open roaming around the room.

vian pressed her back against the wall. Maybe he wouldn't see her. She

d never thought about what she was going to say to him or how she

s going to explain all of this. She was going to sound like a complete

atic! But his eyes fell on her, and she knew he was trying to remember

    ere he knew her from.

e slowly made her way across the room taking her seat beside him. Sh

ok a deep breath and asked, "How do you feel?"

ill glancing around the room he answered, "fine.... Sore."

eah, you're body is changing....." Why did she say that?

stared at her in utter confusion. "What?"

vian sighed again. "It's a long story....."

have time.... I guess...." He looked about the room again, but instead ofking where he was or who she was he pushed against the

d sitting upright giving her his full attention.

e felt awkward and tense, even more so than before because he had b

    eep. "Seth-"

ow do you know my name?"

e glanced over at his wallet and he nodded in understanding. "Do you kat a lycanthrope is?" He shook his head. "Its a

rewolf. To get right to the point, that is what you are now." Once the

rds were out of her mouth she realized how much better they sounded

    r mind.

    th laughed. "Werewolf.... Right."

es." She sat up straighter trying to show confidence. "I don't have to

gue with you, because soon you'll know I'm right. A girl namedtrid - she's a werewolf too - she bit you back in that old shack. That s

n your neck," she pointed, "you'll always have that."

touched his fingertips to the fresh pink scar on his neck. From an ang

ked like the Nike sign, a check mark almost. But she

erted her thoughts from that, and returned to him. Vivian leaned bac

e chair crossing her legs more comfortably. If only she could beaxed." But that will be the last scar you will have. Don't worry," she

ded. He looked in her eyes as though that would get the answers to all

estions. Knowing better, he spoke. "I don't believe any of this. As I sa

u don't have to believe me. You'll see for yourself." Vivian shrugged

    r shoulders.

th then swung his feet over onto the floor and stood. He towered ove

r for a moment before he walked toward the door. This guy was

d held out her hand in front of her. She loved the warm tingling

eling that made its way through her body. Vivian smirked when Seth tr

turn the door knob. Then jiggle it. Finally he hit the door weakly in

ustration and headed for the window. But before he could take his sec

ep, she averted her palm to the window and it shut with a loud snap

e a fire cracker.s eyes widened, and jaw dropped slightly, but said nothing. He stood th

r a long time in complete silence. Vivian parted her lips

veral times to say something, but nothing came to mind so she sat back

r chair again. Seth finally looked at her. His eyes met hers briefly

fore they dropped to the floor afraid. The fear he felt gave Vivian po

e wanted to rejoice but she shouldn't. What he was feeling now, alle confusion and fear, she had felt before. She had been there, and wa

ng to treat him with kindness and understanding; just like what

    aeve had done for her.

What are you?" His voice was deeply rough. It was obvious he was trying

ep his mouth from quivering. Many thoughts ran through

r mind on how she should answer him. Should she tell him she was not

man? That she had powers beyond mortals? That she was a freak?... None of these seemed right. She would just say it, without hiding t

uth. He was already in shock. "I'm a witch!" He gave a short,

ghtened laugh. "A witch?" Vivian stood walking slowly towards him. Sh

ked him in his eyes. "Why do you choose not to believe me when

u have just witnessed my powers? Yes, I am a witch. And you" She ste

sely to him. She could feel his hot breath brush against herce. "You are a lycanthrope. A werewolf!"

s parted expectantly like in a trance, and Seth bent down. Her heart

pped a beat and she took a step back. The disappointed look

his face sent a hurtful pang through her.

t will be revealed to you." Her voice cracked and she coughed quietly. "

most daylight. We need to sleep." She turned away.

shook his head. "I'm not tired.

shook his head. "I'm not tired.

ling back the blankets, Vivian slid under the covers. "You're more tire

an you think," she reached for the lamp attempting to turn it off,

en his hand clasped over hers.

want to know more." His eyes were pleading.

miling she laid her head back on the pillow. "When night comes again I

omise I will. But now we sleep."thout any further argument he clicked the light off bathing them in

    rkness.

om the next bed she heard it softly, but clearly. "Thank you for saving

    e."

e next day went by quickly. Neither of them left the room, and kept ton't disturb" sign on the door. They kept the television on

roughout the day. Seth insisted on changing the channel but Vivian kep

e remote with her keeping it on the news. If anything strange

ppened she wanted to know. Neither one spoke about what happened t

ht before or about supernatural subjects. They spoke like old

ends on vacation. The most rousing part of the day was when Seth

tempted to steal the remote control. Vivian hopped on the bed keepingt of reach. Seth would run after her, and she would run around the roo

ce using her powers to hover the remote teasingly over his head. It

s only when he tackled her around the waist making them both fall, Se

ding on top of her, then the remote plummeted to the floor. Vivian

uld feel her heart skip several beats. He blushed and lifted himself of

al. Maybe that was why Vivian liked the night; or maybe it was just tha

vian's kind was connected with it so much.

e looked over, and saw Seth still sleeping. He lied in bed with the shee

d comforter tangled around his legs. His chest moved up

d down slowly and rhythmically. She could tell by the movement of his

rld. Now she felt the need to protect him as well. Who knows what the

rld would do to him if they ever found out.

vian sat on the broken air vent under the window, her back against the

nd. An old memory Seth brought back last night.e face of the person was hidden in darkness. Vivian never saw who it w

happened so fast. The bullet pierced her flesh and muscle.

e heard the bang and felt the pain in her stomach, but didnt believe it

til she looked down. In the middle of her blue dress was a dark circle

warm, red blood. She sunk to the ground as her eyes closed and her m

came engulfed in the pain. She knew she was dying and wanted

badly to move, to tell someone that it was all ending for her and to sayodbye. But her body was cold like ice, everything was freezing when

ddenly a warm feeling passed through her. She felt more alive and awa

an ever. When she opened her eyes, two silver gleaming eyes

ked down at her. Any other person would have been scared, but she

sn't. Instead she smiled. When she looked down again the blood was

ll there but the pain was gone.vian placed her hand over her stomach recalling the vision again in her

nd. She was looking out the window but wasn't really seeing

ything. Her mind flashed back to that night; back to that place. It was

at she enjoyed it, it was that she couldn't turn back; at least not at th

    ment.

on enough though, she was jolted back to the motel room. Seth had ge

d a hand on her shoulder bringing her back to the present.

e faked a smile and went back to look out the window while he took a s

    ross from her.

ou know.... You never told me your name."

e turned back to him, the corners of her mouth twitching into a smile.

    t's Vivian."

grinned, and stared out of the window with her. She was sure a lot wa

ng through his mind, but what he said next she wasntepared for.

want no part of this. I want to go back to a normal life. If I was really

anged into a werewolf, I can change back right?"

r heart sunk as she looked at the pained expression on his face, "Yes,

don't know how." She looked back out the window.

th sighed. "Who does know?"dont know.... There are not many willing to know - much less even want

    change back."

ut.... There has to be someone... Somehow..."

oking away from the night she saw the desperate look upon his face. It

s the same look she gave to Maeve many times regarding

r fate. However, at the time she believed what Maeve said. Seth was s

ubting her. She shook the thoughts away focusing back on Seth.here's a book. It's the book of our kind. It will tell you how to reverse

    urself back to human form."

s smile widened. "Great! Where is it?"

With the rest." Vivian looked down, and picked a piece of lint off her je

    est?"

e nodded. "Did you think you were the only one? There are many othereatures out there, hidden, much of the time. I left the book in

    sisters possession."

When do we leave?" He asked with urgency? Vivian wanted to tell him to

rget about the book and move on. Accept this creature within

m the magical world connected. But she couldn't. After all, he deserve

    oice.

onight! There's no need to wait." She slid off the air vent, stretching.

the corner of her eye she saw Seth looking at her

uisitively. "What's the matter" she asked? She raised an eyebrow

    uisitively.

ou ready? Vivian looked up at him.

s eyes wandered across the field expectantly, but she pushed aside atch of grass to reveal a moss covered stone with a large

rning the handle, the door creaked as she opened it, walking down the

e rushed two doors down and closed the room to her door quietly. Her

e way I am. If Seth wants me then he will have to accept it too. But h

mewhere through the night, she drifted off.

***some point in the middle of the night Vivian awoke sitting straight up

e lied back down until deep screaming pierced her ears. She swung her

ew very well that he wasn't but she had no idea of the pain a werewolf

vian wrenched her arm back, and sat down next to the whimpering wolf

e slid her hand down his back moving up to scratch his ears.

on he fell back asleep there on the floor. He would change back when

n rose and to keep him warm, Vivian covered him tightly in the

e with it and love all the magic with this new world.... Like they alld.... Or maybe he was too different from any of them and he would only

nt to return to his human world. How could she blame him? His mortal

e tore her eyes away from the sleeping wolf to the window. A full moo

challenged the change, it would be worse; torture in fact. On the nigh

turning to her room, Vivian crawled into bed. A cool breeze made its w

vian shook her head frantically, mouthing the word no, but she had

    eady opened the door.

i Seth, so nice to see you. A smile seemed to be pasted on her face.

eah You too Um Is it okay if I speak to Vivian alone? Please?

bsolutely. She swung on her heel, the smile still plastered to her face

ee ya Viv. And she left, shutting the door behind her.vian sat up suddenly uncomfortable. Whats up?

th took a seat next to her sitting rather rigid as though he was

comfortable too. I got you this, he placed in her hands a light gray an

ck rock that shined mysteriously on its own. It had a leather string

nning through it to hang over her neck.

e smiled biting her lip, and running her thumb over the smooth textureWhats the matter? Did I do something wrong? He looked at the neckla

    rryingly.

o, you didnt, dont worry. Its just that. Do you know what you just d

    vian questioned.

his fairy, Flint told me, handing a girl an unusual rock means courtship

e was right. A thought occurred to her. How do you know Flint?

ean, she laughed. She knew her sister had something to do with this.

ey, Seth, you know about the ball right? Vivian asked.

nodded, a smile curling about his lips. Will you go with me?

ot bad at all. But your hair! Vivian ran her hands over the bouncing cuving it straight and shiny.

e felt her hair, and nodded approvingly. Good work Viv.

nytime sis. Anytime."knock announced the arrival of the boys. With a wide excited smile Je

ad. His blue eyes were bright and alive, and he wore a silky silver

    wn with matching pants underneath.

ou look great. Jean touched his shoulder feeling the silk.

ts odd without my outfit or wings. He shifted uncomfortably.

e looked over to Vivian, well see you two out there. She winked as sh

ter a short silence, Seth spoke. Im no good at this.

vian slid her arm through the crook of his elbow. Neither am I."

ey walked out to the circular room. Strings of golden lights hung aroun

e walls lighting up the dark. Soft music of violins and pianos,

e recognized as Maeves, played seemingly out of thin air. Even Vivian, d seen this done once every year, had grinned broadly taking

e beautiful sight in. For her, this never got old.

ery creature was dressed in their finest clothing. The centaurs with d

ored vests the green matching the forest outside. The fairies

ked as though they were dipped in glitter, they shined and sparkled

ghtly as they flew around dancing in mid-air.vian looked sideways at Seth, enjoying the drop of his jaw. She took hi

vian laughed as she twirled him around.

mmm. Im not too good at this, Seth confessed as he tried to regain

    kward balance.

e took his other hand. Its customary to dance. It came so suddenly

e felt comfortable. Maybe it was the atmosphere, or that shes finally becoming comfortable around Seth. Not once had she thought

    out him wanting to leave.

eah, but I was always awful at dancing, he then tripped over his own f

vian held his hands more tightly keeping him from falling. Youre not s

    d. Its harder to dance with four legs. She glanced over at the

ntaurs that were swaying back and forth in time to the music. It was qight to see, and they both laughed quietly.

ood thing a centaur didnt bite me then, he pulled her towards him his

    nds resting on her waist.

warm feeling crept over her cheeks, and she lowered her head hoping t

sic changed throughout the night, and so did the peoples rhythms. Se

d Vivian did not leave the dance floor, they continued to

ay, their arms around each other. They never spoke a word, maybe bec

ey didnt have anything more to say, or they were too

comfortable to say what they really were thinking.

an appeared next to them, Flint with his arm around her waist. She gaed smile. Im beat.

    oing to bed?

eah, but really, this is the best ball we have had in a long time.

vian nodded in agreement. The Brownies did a great job.

th looked around the room. Brownies?

ey all chuckled, and she patted his shoulder. Not the food. They arepers, they clean here.

    rownies?"

    es," Vivian nodded.

m going to bed. Dont stay up too late. Jean nudged Vivian painfully in

    s, and winked.

ter they left, Vivian and Seth continued to dance slow, barely moving t

et. Breathing in deeply, she could smell his cologne. It was ark smell like that of the night, of something mysterious, and beautiful

ought came quickly across her mind that she never wanted to let go

this boy, but keep him under her wing. Or maybe, when he grew used t

s world they could just be together. Just them.

vian had always been happy, but not this kind of happy where she could

e a full smile and mean it. She hadn't had her picture takence the loss of the family, but if she had, none of the pictures of her

uld show her smiling. Except maybe one tonight.

What?" Seth crinkled his brows looking down at his shirt checking to se

vian realized that she must have actually been smiling stupidly. She

uckled quietly, "nothing. Just having fun."

asping her hands behind his neck she rested her head on his chest. His

artbeat was rather fast, and it was then that she

membered that werewolves hearts were faster than humans. This thou

used a jolt in her heart as thought it had skipped a beat.

    vian?"

ting her head she looked up in his eyes. Maybe she had gone too far,

tten too close, but that wasn't what he seemed to try to getross. He placed one finger under her chin raising her face towards his

ned down, his lips not an inch from hers when she pulled back

    t of his arms.

th stared at her, confused, and hurt, and she felt ashamed. She wante

ke just now from the somersaults her stomach have been

ng.ome on, theres something I want to show you, she said. She had made

r mind on what to do. It was only right, so she led him

ck through the hallway into her room. His expression had suddenly

    anged into a wide-eyed shock.

h, Vivian, look, I like you a lot but -

e turned abruptly from the window she was opening. Did he say what s

ough he had said? Or was it only in her mind? You what?like you, but dont you think this is rushing things?

her mind she re-played what she had done, and it clicked. Of course!

th. She began laughing, blushing at the same time. Just

    low me."

    low me."

very confused Seth followed after her through the window out into threst. It was cold, and dark, hiding the light from the moon, but as

eir eyes adjusted they saw where they were going, and they were furt

ck as it was dense, the trees close together, they sometimes had to

ve sideways to get by them. Vivian lifted her dress to her knees holdi

em at a knot to her side keeping them from ripping on anything.

ter a few minutes of walking in silence, Seth sighed, waving a hand to

e cobwebs that had stuck to his face.

    Where are we going?

vian stepped over a fallen log covered in moss. Were almost there.

on enough they came to a small clearing where the trees circled back

ound a silver pond. Unlike most ponds there were no ripples,

d nothing reflected in it, not even the sky, or tops of trees. Instead it

ned as though it was light itself.

Where are we? Seth asked.he Silver Reflections, she led him over to sit at the edge.

his is weird, he bent to touch it, but Vivians reflexes were quick and

acked him sharply on his wrist.

ont touch, and stay quiet, she whispered, and dipped her fingers in. I

s as smooth as water, and warm like a drawn bath, and like

ny times before, she had the urge to jump in feet first, to feel thermness wash over her.

aving her hand back and forth causing short ripples that disappeared

ckly before reaching the edges, a picture began to surface. It

s a hunched over boy sitting on an old army cot with paint peeling off t

eel headboard, and the blankets, sheets, and pillow looked worn.

was young, must have been about eight-years-old with a mop of blond

    r. By the image he was crying, small tears streamed down hiseeks and chin. A lady who resembled a large penguin in a black and whit

be entered from a door behind the boy. She mouthed something

ey could not hear, and the boy cried even more. Stomping across the r

e took him roughly by the arm forcing him out of the room of army

side Vivian, Seth sighed shakily, shivering. Whether it was from the cothe image, Vivian did not know, but she slipped an arm

    ound his shoulders comfortingly.

    hey took him, he said.

e image disappeared by a wave of Vivians hand. Took him where?

    he orphanage he said.

ence engulfed them, not even the wind had dared to disturb it. Vivian

ng over the thought in her mind. He had a little brother,

e knew that, but the fact that he was that young she didnt know, and

s on his own. It was obvious that Seth had been the caregiver. Why

e would he be in the orphanage?

e finally spoke. He looks a lot like you.

    nodded.

akes it even more important in reaching the book."

What do you mean?"ou have a little brother to take care of. And..... Well....."

th turned to stand in front of her, bending slightly to catch her eyes.

    What is it?"

was hoping that maybe if you started liking it here that maybe you

uldn't want to leave. Reason I've never gone to fetch the book. I

ow it's important, but my family is not even that cruel to do anything twas an excuse to get you to stay a little longer. It's stupid I know..."

    remained quiet, looking at her.

m sorry. It was so stupid," she lowered her eyes.

o.... It was nice. Vivian, this is the closest thing I have ever had to a

mily for a long time. I can never thank you enough for this gift

    u've given me."

hank Astrid...." Vivian smirked, but went quickly serious thinking of whe saw in the pond. "But it doesn't matter. We have to find that

ok now, and afterwards you can go for your brother."

was odd, but Seth's face went slack like she had taken away somethin

ecious from him. "I can't. I don't even know what orphanage it

    he could be anywhere."

e palm of Vivian's hand filled with a steel sharp object by magic, and sd out her keys. "Go on. Look for him, no matter how long it

kes, and when you come back here I'll have the book. Your brother can

ke much more staying where he is. Go on. I can find the book without

pping his arms around her waist he held her close. She pulled her arms

e took a deep breath smelling the scent of him.

hank you," he whispered in her ear, his warm breath grazed her earusing chills over her.

o on," she smiled pushing him away.

e watched him make his way through the trees that soon hid him from

e was up to her ankles in letters and envelopes. Her hair looked stringy

ichael! Michael!" Vivian panted up to him balancing the envelopes.

chael turned around, and made a funny noise between a grunt and sigh

re you kidding me? My bag is already full, Vivian."

Well...." His face went from exasperated to pity. "I've never seen you mt a letter in my life, and this many letters is amazing. May I

vian didn't know why, but she expected an answer to all the letters she

nt out, but a week went by without a single response. Each day

e met Michael at the door, and each time he said "no letters." She

spected he was getting aggravated of her constant appearance.

e knew what was next.... She had to go and visit her family. She had hoat Jean would go, she was almost certain she would, she

s the one that read all the stupid letters they sent trying to persuade

e said nothing, with a wave of her hand dismissing her away.

e morning Vivian dragged herself to the dining room. When she made h

pearance through the doorway everyone stared in

e soles. She paid no attention to where she sat, and piled her plate

th the food around her, but she couldnt eat. Instead she pushed her fgs around her plate poking at the yolk with the tip of her fork

tching it in a yellow volcano. She closed her eyes and took a long sip fr

d turned red with wine, but before she could raise it to her lips it was

es. Vivian didnt know what he was getting at.

shook his head, rubbing his wild black beard. No, no. Cant be done. H

ont defy her, Flint warned in full size standing next to Jean.

vian gave a smile to him mouthing her thanks, then turned to her sister

    ed your keys."

an's eye twitched. Her car was her baby. Nonetheless, she handed ove

    r keys.

hanks sis," she said quickly, and left the underground to her sisters re

orts car. She took a deep breath starting the engine, mming her foot down with force leaving tire marks and a cloud of dust

hind her. Her hair whipped around her face. Nervously, she made a

    ythm out on the steering wheel. She had no idea where she was going;

ere they might be. They could be anywhere. With a shaking hand she

apped her fingers around the necklace.

here are you Seth? Where are you? A warm feeling drowned her sensee she had been cold, and sunk into a warm bath.

ening her eyes she barely saw a man standing out on the dirt road in f

her headlights. Letting the pendant drop onto her chest,

e gripped the wheel tightly, and the car jolted along the stretch of th

ng the brakes until she was able to press down on it throwing herself

e wheel. Chest aching, with a stabbing sore pain as if beingaten. She took deep breaths coughing as she choked on her spit.

r hand still shaking, she reached for the necklace again. She wanted t

scream that surely the stars above heard erupted into the night as Viv

rned around to see the mud-streaked face of a man through

r open window.hhh. Vivian, its me, Seth.

e removed her hands from the steering wheel, shoving the door open,

rowing her arms around his neck. She could have drowned

the relief that flooded her that moment. Youre okay right? She look

    s Jake okay?

es fine. Not a scratch on him.

vian nodded, well, that explains the claw marks. Seeing the confusion

face, she went to explain. They had it on the news.reat, Seth moaned, and leaned further on the door.

strid, Vivian whispered to herself. Why would she be at that orphana

d how would she know that Seth was going to be there? Or

ybe she didnt know Seth was going to show, maybe it all had to do wit

e Underground was the safest place I knew, but I know you all dont a

vian nodded understandingly. In this case, rules can be changed.

ths dry, chapped lips curled up in a smile, and he embraced her in a hu

e never wanted to let go of him, but a shadow behind him caught her ed she gently and reluctantly pushed Seth away. She kept
