Synopsis What if we simply let it be? We have crossed the country by car innumerable times, we have performed in ramshackle places, we have had long, tedious conversations with undesirable businessmen and we have sung our hearts out in every concert; we have given up our friends, our hobbies, our free time, we have sacrificed our holidays, hours of sleep, we have stopped travelling for pleasure; we have literally given everything to achieve our dream. But today we are 37 and little by little we are beginning to realise that the life we dreamed about has little to do with this one. So why don't we let it be? Simply. Why don't we say goodbye with one last big concert and let it be. Santi, spurned son from a long lineage of county bands, and Rosa, televison's wonder child of the early nineties, have been living together for 10 years. Their love story began together with an intrepid musical project which they had to bring, one day or another, onto the Catalan stage. The years passed and that day never came. Today, while they hope that the doors open and the place fills with people in order to recuperate some of the money they have lost on their last tour, they have no choice but to ask themselves where their musical project is going, where their love story is going, and which of the
two things is destroying the other. With references such as Ay!Carmen by José Sanchis Sinistierra, The Trip to Nowhere by Fernando Fernan Gómez or Minetti by Thomas Bernhard, we would like You Say Tomato to be an intense and deeply human comedy, where the comic dialogue and the light music create an honest reflexion on the real meaning of art in the world in which we live, about satisfaction and happiness in couples' relationships, and, in general about all those things we discover the day we stop being young, when we no longer have our whole lives ahead of us, and we realise that, if we don't do anything to avoid it, our lives will be like this until the end of our days. Is that what we want?
SALA TRONO
Sala Trono theatre and dance started as a theatrical producer in 2008 with “El lleig (The ugly one)” by Marius von Mayenburg; a harsh criticism of the use and abuse of plastic surgery. This show, luckily, was a success with the critics and public alike, and after being at SALA TRONO for two weeks and at TEATRE TANTARANTANA in Barcelona for four more it toured Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, visiting 30 Catalan towns, aswell as receiving two important honours: special mention by the jury of Premi Beca Metropol 2008 and nomination for the Butaca 2008 awards as best small format show. With this precedent, SALA TRONO continued with quality theatrical production, focussing on contemporary drama, be it from Catalonia or elsewhere in Europe. The second production was the latest work of the Valencian author Paco Zarzoso, entitled “L'impossible”. SALA TRONO suggested to the author the possiblity of writing a text to be produced and performed by the SALA TRONO company. The author was very enthusiastic about this proposal, and he set to work writing the text, which saw the light of day in September 2009, in the small room in Tarragona.
The predictions for the season were totally surpassed, and the number of performances had to be doubled to meet public demand. The show talked about the complex and sometimes sordid world of education in a secondary school, in a comic way. For reasons out of the school's control, the classrooms are closed for almost the whole academic year. Three of those involved, the head teacher, the head of studies and a young teacher each give their view of this situation. It is a criticism of and complaint about the current education system. “L'impossible” was performed at SALA TRONO, the Manacor Fair, the municipal theatre in Valls and the showcase Butaka d'Olesa de Montserrat. In 2010, SALA TRONO took on the production of two shows; the first is an original musical. “Killer”, with text by Guillem Clua and music by Xavier Mestres would be its third production; a musical thriller with one actor and three musicians. A risky and important bet like this one, to produce and create an original musical in Catalan with three of the most promising contemporary creators on the Catalan scene, Guillem Clua, Xavier Mestres and Joan Ma Segura in charge. “Killer” explains the story of Pau Moira, a gravedigger with a terrible secret... we meet Pau Moira when his is on the accused bench. Everybody points to him as the most lethal serial killer ever, and some ask for the death penalty. But is Pau Moira really such a terrible character?
Exactly what relationship does he have with his victims? How is it possible that a woman loves him so much and defends his innocence? And most importantly, how can just one actor explain this tragicomic story.... as a musical? This show premiered at SALA TRONO on 16th September 2010, and it was also performed at the Kursaal theatre in Manresa, five weeks at Sala Muntaner in Barcelona and from April 2011 it began a tour of Catalonia. In 2010 “La marató de Nova York” by Edoardo Erba premiered.
A comedy which has run alone for 15 years and a challenge which the two main characters meet, running throughout the piece. Act and run. There is no winner, because, as in life, the first ends up being the last as if everything were a mistaken fantasy. A dream. Directed by Juan Carlos Martei, and starring Albert Triola and Joan Negrié, it was first seen at la Villarroel on 7th September 2010, where it stayed for 4 weeks to public and critcal acclaim, then touring Catalonia. What's more, SALA TRONO co-produced the dance show “Una del montón” in 2008, with the company of the same name, which is on an unstoppable tour throughout Spain. The show is directed by Roberto Romei and performed by Anna Corredor and Anna Pérez, and it is a delicate piece in that it uses doubt and questioning, as at the start the public discover that a piece of the sky is, in fact, the whole sky. In 2011 “Bildelbery Club Cabaret” was produced; a political cabaret show written and directed by Oriol Grau, which became the greatest success ever in the history of our productions. Three months at the little theatre in Tarragona, Valencia and a season in Barcelona. The most ambitious production to date was in 2012. “Parlour Song” by Jez Butterworth; a co-production with CAER which did a season at the Goya theatre in Barcelona. A big jump for a “sala” like that of Trono.
In December 2012 Red Pontiac by Pere Riera premiered, a text which came out of the TA Drama competition, with a season at Poliorama and more than 40 performances around Catalonia. In the same month, “Menu del Dia” by Marilia Samper was presented, with a season at the Tantarantana theatre. To celebrate 10 years of the “sala” the 10th production was presented. In this case, an international co-production with the Banfield Theatre ensemble from Buenos Aires, “El don de las sirenas” by Pere Riera, which was performed at Sala Beckett. In 2014 “El cabaret Catòliques i de dretes” by Oriol Grau and Enric Xato Grau premiered. www.salatrono.com
