Surgical strikes: What is it? Why is it important?

India’s surgical strike:

The Indian Army conducted an overnight surgical strikes along the Line of Control in Pakistan on Thursday. The surgical strikes targeted seven terror launch pads across using heliborne and ground forces.

What Is A Surgical Strike? 

Surgical strike is a military attack on a specific target

The aim is to ensure little or no collateral damage

A surgical strike is defined as a military attack intended to inflict damage on a specific target, with little or no collateral damage to surrounding areas.

Why:

 Thursday’s attacks were the latest in the offensives launched by India since the Uri attack.

On September 18, four men executed what was one of the worst terrorist attacks on the Indian Army and killed 19 army jawans in Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri in the rear office of an Indian Army infantry installation.

The attackers are believed to have come from Pakistan. Since then, India has upped its diplomatic offensive against Pakistan in a bid to isolate the country internationally.

Causalities

The Defence Ministry confirmed that there were no causalities on the Indian side.

The Pakistan side has accepted that two soldiers were killed in the early morning firing. There are some reports that upto 40 terrorists were killed in the strikes across multiple launchpads.

From classified intelligence documents accessed by The Indian Express, it appears the assault caught the Lashkar and other jihadist groups by surprise.

CONCULSION

These attacks can be carried out via air raids, airdropping special ops teams or a ground operation.
