Dear Reader,
In your hands is the result of almost two years of dreaming, creating and refi ning. I joined Phaidon to reimagine and expand the children’s publishing programme into a list that pairs the mastery of Phaidon with the magic of childhood. The result is these seven titles, each one a fi ne balance of unusual style and age-specifi c relevancy.
It has been thrilling to observe the evolution of the children’s market, now boasting a more refi ned eye and a taste for the eccentric. Yet so many of today’s ‘high-design’ children’s books have left behind the audience for whom they are supposedly intended. As a graduate of child development studies and a brand-new mum, my devotion to this audience is paramount. Whether it be a set of fold-out board books about animal food chains for the preschool set, or a 120-page hardcover of nautical codes for six- to eight-year-olds, our subjects and formats make perfect sense to young readers, and yet, are like nothing they have seen before.
Each of our books features groundbreaking content in the most elegant of packages, and yet, all aspectsare dictated by the age of the child for whom we are creating. This fresh approach to publishing, paired with the highest aesthetic and production values, makes each book uniquely Phaidon.
These titles, and those to come, will become favourites not only with booksellers and librarians and parents and teachers, but with children themselves. After all, those are the books that matter most, that achieve longevity, that become synonymous with memories of childhood. And so, with great care, I pass on to you this fi rst season’s collection of books. Go and share them with the young people in your life, and then share your impressions with me!
I look forward to hearing from you,
Cecily KaiserPublishing Director, Phaidon Children’s [email protected]

Henri Matisse’s (1869-1954) innovative use of colour has inspired generations of artists. His cut-outs – collages made from shapes cut from painted paper in a process he described as ‘painting with scissors’ – have become some of the most admired works of the last century.
Ages 1–3Board Book-Henri Matisse’s abstract cut-outs are used to teach colours in this polished read-aloud board book. Blue & Other Colours takes children through Matisse’s colour palette, one artwork per page, beginning with blue and returning to it as a familiar refrain throughout. The variance of shapes, depth and scale will keep readers engaged, while the text enriches the reading experience with relatable and humorous commentary. Readers will not only learn their colours, but also grow familiar with fi ne art in this fi rst title in a series of concept books featuring the most innovative and infl uential artists. Includes a read-aloud ‘about the artist’ at the end.
Key Selling Points-The fi rst title in a groundbreaking series of early-learning concept board books featuring fi ne art. -Colours books are the bestselling of all early-learning concept books.-‘Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs,’ a recent exhibition at London’s Tate Modern, was the most popular exhibition in the museum’s history; it then met similar success at New York’s MoMA.-A must-own book for all art-enthusiast parents. -This book was created in collaboration with Henri Matisse’s grandson, Georges, who lives in Paris.

Key Selling Points-Young readers will be tickled by the humorous and clever use of collage, with food to fi nd on every spread!-These two high-interest subjects – dogs and food – will appeal to the picture book audience.-This eye-catching illustration style is a celebrated departure for Waldron, featuring bold colours and unusual collage elements.
Ages 4–6Picture Book-Like most dogs, Harold loves food; unlike most dogs, he imagines food in the most unlikely places – on buildings, cars, postboxes, even fi re hydrants! When Harold gets lost in the big city, he is overtaken by hunger and begins to see things: a waffl e manhole cover, a roast turkey in the postbox, even toast popping out of the top of a building! Thankfully, Harold’s hungry eyes lead him to familiar landmarks and he fi nds his way home … to breakfast!

Jean Jullien is a popular French graphic designer whose practice ranges from illustration, photography and video, to costumes, installations, books, posters and clothing. His clients include The New Yorker, The New York Times, Guardian, Tate, Channel 4, Nike, BMW, Colette, Byron Burger and Carluccio’s. He lives with his wife in London.
A playfully deceptive format that encourages young readers to see things differently
Key Selling Points-Jean Jullien is one of today’s most popular satirical artists, with over 330,000 followers on Instagram.-This approach dares children to forego their assumptions about what usually lies between two covers, in the grand tradition of Lane Smith’s It’s A Book and Mo Willems’ We Are In A Book.-Clever page design inspires children to suspend disbelief and play with this book.-The thick, sturdy board pages will stand up to little hands holding, turning, tapping, slamming shut and standing up the book on their own.-Features a surprising double gatefold that opens to create a house!
Ages 2–4Board Book-This is not a book – it’s a laptop, a pair of hands to clap, a toolbox! Each spread of this book is actually something else entirely, challenging young readers to see things quite differently! Turning the page and fi nding a full-sized image of piano keys will invite children to swing the book on its side for imaginative play; turning the page again to fi nd a monster with its mouth wide open will prompt children to use the book to chomp everything around them! The result stretches beyond the pages of this book, prompting readers to think creatively about other objects in their daily lives.
