The Benguela, Belize, Lobito, and Tomboco fields form the BBLT development. It lies in deepwater block 14 off
Angola, in the lower Congo basin.
The block lies in 1,280ft of water covering 1,560 square miles. The $2.2bn development centres on the first Compliant
Piled Tower (CPT) outside the Gulf of Mexico. The CPT measures approximately 512m (1,680ft) from the seafloor to
the top of its derrick. This ranks it as the fifth tallest freestanding structure in the world, standing 212m (694ft) taller
than the Eiffel Tower.
"The CPT is the fifth tallest freestanding structure in the world, standing
212m (694ft) taller than the Eiffel Tower."
Block 14 is operated by Cabinda Gulf Oil Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of Chevron with 31%. The other partners are Agip
Angola 20%, Sonangol 20%, Total Angola 20% and Portugal's Petrogal Exploration 9%.
The work is being carried out in a two-phase programme. The first phase consists of the Benguela and Belize
developments. It is a compliant piled tower supporting an integrated drilling facility. It includes drilling and
completion for more than 30 developments wells from the 40-slots.
The second phase is to develop the Lobito and Tomboco fields, which will produce via subsea wells tied into the
central production hub. It will see a combined peak production of 200,000b/d by 2008.
Daewoo was awarded an $820m contract from Mustang, for engineering, procurement, construction and installation
of the project's production facilities, CPT, and the oil and gas export pipelines.
The topside modules were built at the yard Daewoo's Okpo in South Korea. The topside section has an operating
weight of 43,500t. Delta Engineering fabricated the 157-man accommodation module at its yard in Channelview,
Texas.
Meanwhile, Sonamet constructed the drilling template, piles, flare boom, and helideck all weighing over 1,600t, at its
yard in Lobito, Angola. Included in the topsides equipment are the facilities to handle 420,000b/d of water re-
injection.
JACKET CONSTRUCTION
Fabrication of the tower portion of the production facility was split into two sections.
The tower base section and template, weighing over 26,000t was built by Kiewit Offshore. Technip's Gulf Marine
Fabricators constructed the tower's 8,000t top section, The CPT's bottom section consisted of 12 foundation piles,
weighing around 11,000t, These were also fabricated in Ingleside, Texas.
SUBSEA CONTRACTS
The subsea part of the project went to Subsea 7 and Vetco Gray.
Subsea 7 won the $270m contract for the 10km tieback of three subsea drill centres to the CPT. The work included
fabrication and installation of the steel pipelines, flowline jumpers, connectors and umbilicals, as well as installation
of the subsea manifolds.
"The compliant piled tower's bottom section consisted of 12 foundation piles,
weighing around 11,000t."
The steel flowlines were fabricated at the spoolbase in Luanda and the installation work was assigned to the pipelay
vessel Skandi Navica.
Vetco Gray carried out the three-year, $125m contract for of 22 horizontal subsea trees, six manifolds, and the fully
integrated subsea and surface control systems. The 80t subsea manifolds (three production and three water injection)
were built at Lobito, Angola, for Vetco.
THE DRILLING RIG
The $120m engineering, procurement and construction operations and maintenance of the platform drilling rig was
won by KCA/Deutag and National Oilwell Varco.
CPT's integrated platform is capable of drilling to 30,000ft. It uses AC variable frequency drives. It is fitted with a
mechanical pipehandling system installed in its hook-load derrick. This is equipped with 4,600hp drawworks and a
top drive with 60,000lbft torque.
The rig also has three 2,200hp mud pumps rated to 7,500psi with a total mud volume of 4,625bbl.
The CPT's topside modules were lifted by Heerema's semi-submerisble crane vessel Thialf over a five-week period.
When the 10,470t north module was installed, it represented Heerema's largest installation using the Thialf's
anchorless dynamic positioning system. The vessel's dual crane capacity provides for tandem lifts of up to 14,200t.

Block17
Discovered1997
Water depths1,200m to 1,500m
LaunchLate 2006
Dalia was discovered in 1997, 135km offshore in water depths of between 1,200m and 1,500m. The launch of Dalia,
which came onstream in late 2006, was a significant step in the development of block 17, where 15 earlier discoveries
have been made. It followed the development of nearby Girassol, brought onstream in late 2001, and Jasmim, a
Girassol satellite.
By repeating Girassol, but on a much larger scale and under even more extreme conditions, Dalia boosts production
on this golden block to around 500,000bpd. In total, the development of the Dalia project represents an estimated
investment of over $4bn.
The production in December 2006 was over 200,000bpd. It is expected to increase to 240,000bpd. The proved and
probable reserves are around one billion barrels.
The concessionaire of block 17 is Sonangol. TotalFinaElf has a 40% interest in block 17 along with Esso Exploration
Angola (block 17) Ltd (20%), BP Exploration (Angola) Ltd (16.67%), Statoil Angola block 17 AS (13.33%) and
Norsk Hydro (10%).
Dalia field development
The Dalia development plan calls for production from the field's three main reservoirs, as well as the adjacent Camelia
reservoir.
"Production at Dalia is expected to increase to 240,000bpd."
These were formed more than 25 million years ago by the accumulation of sediment at the mouth of the Congo River.
The reservoirs lie not very far (about 800m) below the seabed, forming reservoirs that contain a viscous (between 21°
and 23° API) oil at relatively low temperatures of between 45°C and 50°C.
Associated gas is not be flared but reinjected, thus contributing to maintaining the pressure of the field.
Together with the other block 17 partners, the group has designed one of the largest deep-offshore developments
anywhere in the world. This is based on a subsea production system of 67 wells - 34 production wells, 30 water
injection wells and three gas injection wells - with an option to extend to 71 bringing additional reserves. Further, by
2006, the number of wells increased to 71 and the field had 37 production wells and 31 water injection wells while the
number of gas injections remained same.
These have been drilled with two rigs, Pride Africa and Pride Angola, in tandem for the initial 18 months of the
campaign, which requires a toal of 2,500 days.
Dalia production
Plans envisaged 21 of the 67 wells on-stream by first oil, including 5.5in and 7in completions, seven smart
completions and horizontal drains extending for an average of 1,100m.
"One aspect is the large-scale use of horizontal Christmas trees designed to
allow wells to be drilled through them."
The wells are highly deviated, for example, they are almost horizontal in the reservoirs. One major aspect of the well
programme is the large-scale use of horizontal Christmas trees designed to allow wells to be drilled through them.
The wells are tied into nine manifolds feeding 40km of 12in production lines in four production loops; eight flexible
risers using Integrated Production Bundle technology.
These take the fluid up to the surface facilities; four 35km of 12in water injection lines and risers as well as two 10km
of 12in for the gas. There will also be 75km of umbilicals.
Dalia FPSO
The FPSO vessel for Dalia constitutes a second pole of production on Block 17. Capable of processing 240,000bpd,
the Dalia FPSO has a storage capacity of two million barrels of oil.
The FPSO vessel, built in South Korea, has a hull dimension of 300m in length, 60m in breadth and stands 32m high.
On top of this is 29,400t of topsides, including I-tubes.
It has a water injection capacity of 405,000bpd, water treatment capacity of 265,000bpd and gas compression capacity
of 8mscf per day. The total installed power capacity is 66MW.
The living quarters can accommodate up to 120 people and up to 190 during shut-downs. The structure has a design
working life of 20 years.
The launch of Dalia is a key step in the development of block 17, offshore Angola.

The Gimboa field lies in block 4/05, approximately 85km off the Angola coast, in 700m (2,296ft) of water. The field
is operated by Sonangol on behalf of Norsk Hydro, ACR (Angola Consulting Resources) and SOMOIL (Sociedade
Petrolefira Angolana). Recoverable reserves have been put at 50 million barels of oil equivalent.
The Gimboa project is based on three production and four water injection subsea wells, which are clustered around a
central manifold. This is tied back to a floating production, storage and offloading unit (FPSO).
Technip was awarded the contract, worth approximately $70m, for the engineering, procurement, fabrication, testing,
installation and pre-commissioning of one production flowline, one water injection flexible flowline, one gas lift
flexible pipe, one service umbilical, an associated flexible risers system and flexible well jumpers.
The engineering was carried out with the assistance of its operations and engineering centre in Luanda, while the
company's umbilical plant, Angoflex, manufactured the umbilical and provided logistic support.
The flexible lines were manufactured by Flexi France in Le Trait (France). This contract also included the installation
of other subsea equipment, provided by Sonangol P&P. Offshore operations were performed using a dynamically
positioned vessel in 2008.
Gimboa field came online in April 2009.
Gimboa field FPSO
"The field is operated by Sonangol on behalf of Norsk Hydro, ACR (Angola
Consulting Resources) and SOMOIL (Sociedade Petrolefira Angolana)."
The contract to provide and manage the FPSO was awarded to Saipem in a six-year $570m contract with a five-year
extension option. Delivery to the Gimboa field was concluded in 2008.
Saipem converted the oil tanker T/T Magdelaine into the FPSO Gimboa. The FPSO has 1.8 million barrels of oil
storage and a production capacity of 60,000bpd.
The tanker was built by IHI in Kure, Japan, in 1977, and was converted in Dubai DryDocks. The hull has an overall
length of 337m, a 54.5m breadth and a 27m moulded depth.
Its loaded draught is 21m and it has a deadweight of 273,777t. It is powered by steam turbine boilers with an output of
87,000kg/hr which gives the vessel a transit speed of 10kt (14kt before conversion). Power is from two steam turbine-
driven generators with an output of 14MW each.
The FPSO Gimboa has 100 berths and an operating crew of 50. The mooring is carried out by a 12-leg spread system
consisting of polyester / chain anchored by suction piles.
Gimboa field contractors
Saipem subcontracted the fabrication company Lamprell to build six topside process modules in a $30.3m deal. In
addition to the main contract, this included an option for the fabrication of the piperack worth another $8.7m.
"The Gimboa field lies in block 4/05, approximately 85km off the Angola
coast, in 700m (2,296ft) of water."
These modules are for lift and flash gas compression, high and low-pressure separation, plus a chemical injection skid,
a processing manifold and an equipment room.
VWS Westgarth supplied the sulphate removal package. Its scope consists of a water injection plant in a single lift
module arrangement comprising of: seawater coarse strainers, a chlorination unit, dual media fine filtration, guard
cartridge filters, HP feed pumps, a sulphate removal membrane system, a fresh water membrane system, a vacuum
deaerator, water injection pumps, a chemical cleaning system, chemical dosing systems, control valves and
instrumentation, fresh water distribution systems, module lighting, fire and gas detection and fire-fighting systems.
Processing facilities at the west African, Angola field
The processing facilities give the FPSO a maximum production of 60,000bpd of oil and 60,000bpd of water.
Maximum gas production is 36.8 million cubic feet a day.
There is a low and high-pressure ignition-type continuous gas flare of 1.49 million cubic metres a day but that can be
raised to a maximum of 87 3.14 million cubic metres a day in an emergency.
The gas compression facilities are rated at 20 million scfd. The tanker can store 1,800,000 barrels of crude in the
tanks. There are also slop tanks able to hold 108,000 barrels.

Girassol is located about 210km north-northwest of Luanda, Angola. It lies in 1,350m of water and has been
developed using a subsea facility tied back to an FPSO.
Girassol base-case reserves are around 630 million barrels (bbls) of 32° API crude oil. The field came on-stream in
December 2001.
TotalFinaElf E&P Angola is the operator of the $2.8bn project, with a 40% interest. Its partners are Esso Exploration
Angola (20% interest), BP (16.7%), Statoil (13.3%) and Norsk Hydro (10%).
Subsea exploration and production system
The subsea production system consists of 39 wells, including 23 producers.
In January 2011, FMC Technologies was awarded an $80m contract to provide subsea production system for the
GirRI (Girassol Resources Initiative) project.
FMC will suplly three subsea production trees, six wellheads and various flowbase and jumper systems under an
option three agreement.
Hull of the floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit
"Girassol base-case reserves are around 630 million barrels (bbls) of 32° API
crude oil. The field came on-stream in December 2001."
The bare hull was built in the Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) shipyard in Korea and moved out of dry dock in July
1999. It can store two million barrels of crude oil and support processes with a capacity of 200,000b/d.
It has an overall length of 300m, a moulded breadth of 59.5m, a moulded depth of 30.5m and a design draught of
22.77m. The design life of the hull is 20 years without dry docking.
Deadweight is 343,000t which includes 98% of cargo capacity and 50% of slop tanks.
The hull features a double-sided construction with 12 ballast wing tanks measuring 7m wide, as well as two fore-peak
and two aft-peak ballast tanks. In total, it has 12 cargo tanks.
Topsides and accomodation
The main contractor, MAR Profundo Girassol - a joint venture between ETPM and Buoygues - was originally
subcontracted to build the integrated deck at Fos-sur-Mer in France.
It subsequently re-awarded the contract to Hyundai. This deck is 180m long by 60m wide. It weighs approximately
20,000t.
It contains living quarters, oil treatment facilities, storage, metering and offloading, gas treatment and reinjection
facilities.
The process deck is located 7m above the deck of the hull. It contains facilities for produced water treatment at a flow
rate of 180,000BPD as well as facilities for three million m³/day gas lift, eight million m³/d gas compression at 285
bars and gas dehydration.
The living quarters unit is located at the aft end of the hull and is designed to accommodate 140 people in 80 cabins.
Mooring, risers and umbilicals of the west African FPSO
The FPSO was towed from Korea to Girassol, where the risers and umbilicals were installed and connected ready for
commissioning and first oil.
"TotalFinaElf E&P Angola is the operator of the $2.8bn project, with a 40%
interest. Its partners are Esso Exploration Angola (20% interest), BP (16.7%),
Statoil (13.3%) and Norsk Hydro (10%)."
The FPSO is spread-moored with 16 lines, four at each corner. The anchor lines are a composite assembly of chains
and cables connected to 16 suction anchors.
The east side of the FPSO has been designed to receive the umbilicals and risers from three riser towers. Each of the
riser towers is connected to the FPSO by a riser, each of which is 1.5m in diameter and 1,250m long, said to be
proportionately equivalent to a 1m length of piano wire.
Floats 40m high and 8m in diameter are attached to the tops of the risers, along with flexible pipelines to carry the oil
up into the FPSO. Each riser tower consists of 12 tubes arranged around a thick central pipe that acts as a backbone,
and the whole assembly is sheathed in epoxy insulating material.
The riser towers were built by UK-based engineering company Acergy in Sonamet, Angola.
In addition, ten umbilicals are connected to the base of the riser towers. The west side of the FPSO is designed to
receive further risers and umbilicals if needed.
Offloading
The FPSO is designed for two offloading systems, one for normal operation with a buoy and one as back-up
offloading, in tandem.
Both systems are located at the bow of the FPSO.
The main offloading system includes a loading buoy, located approximately one mile away from the bow of the
FPSO. This can accommodate tankers from 80,000 to 400,000DWT, with a nominal offloading rate of 6,000m³/h
through two rigid steel catenary 16in lines.
The tandem offloading is a conventional system with a mooring hawser assembly and handling system, and an
offloading hose and its handling system. It is designed to accommodate tankers up to 200,000DWT at a nominal
offloading rate of 8000m³/hour.
The field came on-stream in 2001. The average production from Girassol is about 240,000 bpd.
Main offloading system at Girassol has a nominal offloading rate of 6,000m³/h.
Girassol FPSO has a storage capacity of two million barrels of crude oil.

Water depth1,200m to 1,500m
FieldsFive: Platina, Plutonio, Galio, Paladio, Cromio, Cobalto
ReservesAbout 750 million barrels
PartnersBP Angola and Sonangol Sinopec International
Field area5,000 sq km
The Greater Plutonio accumulation lies in 1,200m to 1,500m of water, 160km northwest of Luanda in the Block 18
concession. It consists of five distinct fields; Galio, Cromio, Paladio, Plutonio and Cobalto. It was discovered in 1999-
2001 and is the first BP-operated asset in Angola. It has total estimated reserves of about 750 million barrels, making
it one of the biggest off Angola’s coast.
In 1999, BP drilled the Platina (in the west of the block) and Plutonio wells using the deepwater drillship Pride
Angola, and followed these in 2000 with Galio, Paladio, Cromio and Cobalto. They are all located within 20km of
each other.
Later discoveries included the Cesio and Chumbo fields, slightly further to the south and west. It is likely that Cesio
and Chimba will be developed with Platina. These fields hold up to 300 million barrels of recoverable oil between
them and are due to come on stream between 2008 and 2010.
The Greater Plutonio development was approved in early 2004. Originally, BP Angola and Shell Exploration and
Production Angola BV hold Block 18's exploration permit under a production-sharing contract with Angola's state-
owned oil company, Sociedade Nacional de Combustveis de Angola (Sonangol). Now, while BP still has a 50%
interest in the block, which was acquired by Amoco in 1996 prior to its merger with BP, the other 50% is held by
Sonangol Sinopec International, a joint venture between the Chinese and the Angolan state oil companies, which
bought out Shell’s interest.
The focus for the exploration campaign has been the northern part of the block, adjacent to neighbouring Block 17. It
resulted in eight successes from eight exploration wells drilled.
DEVELOPMENT
Development of Greater Plutonio, which has cost an estimated $1,000m, presented a number of challenges. The fields
are spread over a wide area (35km from Platina to Cobalto) with water depth varying from 1,200m to 1,500m. In
addition, the group of fields involves reservoirs at different stratigraphic levels.
The joint development uses 43 subsea wells – 20 producers, 20 water injectors and three gas injectors – tied back to a
single spread moored FPSO facility to process produced fluids and export crude.
The heart of the subsea system is the longest single riser tower system of its kind in the world. At about 1,250m, it
connects the FPSO to a network of subsea flowline and control systems that include 150km of flowlines, nine
manifolds and 110km of instrument and control umbilicals.
"The fields are spread over a wide area (35km from Platina to Cobalto) with
water depth varying from 1,200m to 1,500m."
The 310m-long, "all-electric" FPSO has an oil storage capacity of 1.77 million barrels, oil processing capacity of up to
240,000 barrels of oil per day, produced and treated water injection rate of 450,000 barrels per day, and gas handling
capacity of up to 400 million standard cubic feet per day. It is held in position by 12 mooring lines connected to
anchor piles on the seabed.
With a 3½-year development timeline, production started on 1 October 2007 and is expected to reach 250,000 barrels
of low-sulphur medium gravity crude per day. Capital expenditure for the development has been estimated at $4
billion over the life of the fields.
The project features some innovative and novel technologies being applied such as a distributed temperature sensing
system linked to downhole flow control of water injection, subsea multiphase metering and running trees on wires.
CONTRACTORS
BP awarded FMC Kongsberg Subsea a $270 million contract to supply subsea systems and related services. The FMC
unit's scope of supply for the entire project included 45 subsea trees and associated structures, manifolds and
production control systems, as well as connection systems for flowlines and umbilicals.
In 2005, BP signed a further $80 million contract with FMC Kongsberg for the supply of subsea systems covering
installation services and local Angolan supply. FMC Technologies also supplied technical services related to
installation and start-up.
"BP also awarded a $730 million field development contract to a consortium
of Stolt Offshore and Technip."
BP also awarded a $730 million field development contract to a consortium of Stolt Offshore and Technip. The
contract covered engineering, procurement, fabrication and installation of risers, umbilicals and flowlines to serve all
the fields. Stolt Offshore led the consortium, installing 75km of 12in insulated production, gas injection, and service
flowlines and 103km of umbilicals. The consortium also installed 12 FPSO mooring lines, the production manifolds
and a single riser tower to hook up the FPSO.
Kellogg Brown & Root oversaw the engineering, procurement, construction and management, and Hyundai Heavy
Industries fabricated the FPSO hull and topside equipment, at an estimated cost of $650m. Emerson was awarded $9
million for automation of offshore oil production.
WellDynamics and BP signed a multi-well contract for the provision of SmartWell downhole flow control and
ancillary completion equipment to manage water injection. The project required equal numbers of oil production wells
and water injection wells. The water injection wells provide reservoir pressure support and sweep efficiency to ensure
optimal reserve recovery. An additional three gas injection wells are used for reservoir pressure support and to dispose
of associated gas production.
Other contracts for the development included Transocean for drilling contract services.
The Greater Plutonio accumulation lies in 1,200m to 1,500m of water. Its development involves the use
of subsea wells tied back to a single spread moored FPSO facility.
The deepwater drillship Pride Angola was used to drill the discovery wells.

Kizomba field lies in Block 15, offshore of Angola, marking one of the first tranches of deepwater acreage offered by
the Angolan Government. The development consortium is operated by ExxonMobil's subsidiary Esso Exploration
Angola, which has a 40% stake in the field.
The partners also include Agip Angola (with a 20% share), BP Exploration (with a 26.67% share) and Statoil (with a
13.33% share). Sonangol, the Angolan state oil company, is the concessionaire.
Block 15 was allotted to ExxonMobil in 1994, with first production commencing in 2003 from the Xikomba field.
Productions from Kizomba A, Kizomba B and Kizomba C began in 2004, 2005 and 2008 respectively.
The first production from Phase I of the Kizomba satellites project was achieved in July 2012.
Discovery of the Kizomba field
"In 2008 ExxonMobil launched phase one of the Kizomba satellite project,
which included the development of two satellite discoveries, Clochas and
Mavacola."
More than 2,500 square kilometres of high-quality 3D seismic data was acquired by the joint-venture partners. This
was followed during 1997-99 by the first wildcat drilling programme to take place in 1,000-1,400m of water, which
resulted in six discoveries. Four of the discoveries (Hungo, Chocalho, Kissanje and Dikanza) announced in 1998
make up the giant Kizomba field complex.
The reservoirs are from the middle to lower Miocene age. They consist of turbiditie debris flows deposited along the
upper / mid slope. The structural trap configuration is controlled by early-Aptian salt movement, as well as lateral
channel seals. The wells penetrated multiple high-quality reservoirs, giving an oil column exceeding 1,000m.
Kizomba has recoverable reserves approaching two billion oil-equivalent barrels. Other nearby fields are also planned
to be tied into the Kizombo infrastructure. In 1999, the Chocalho and Xikomba fields were discovered or reappraised.
In July 2000, Esso Exploration Angola discovered another oilfield named Mondo, 370km west of Luanda. The
discovery well drilled in 740m of water and encountered an oil-bearing interval, which flowed at a test rate of
4,200bpd. The well was drilled in 2,400ft of water, down to a total depth of 8,200ft.
Kizomba A deepwater development
In 2001, Esso Exploration Angola started construction on the Kizomba A deepwater development.
Related project
TEN Development Project, Deepwater Tano License, Ghana
The TEN development project includes the collective development of three hydrocarbon accumulations -
Tweneboa, Enyenra (formerly, Owo) and Ntomme.
Kizomba A is expected to recover approximately one billion barrels of oil from the Hungo and Chocalho fields at a
target production rate of 250,000bpd. The project first began producing oil in August 2004 at a rate of more than
130,000bpd.
The field is operated by a combination of an ABB-designed 58,000t dry tree TLP and subsea completions, tied back to
the Kizomba A FPSO. The dry tree unit is based on ABB's ETLP design.
The FPSO was built at a cost of more than $800m by Hyundai Heavy Industries, and the target production is
estimated to require a $3.2bn investment. By the end of 2008, Kizomba A had 29 production wells and one
development well.
In June 2002 Esso began construction of the Xikomba deepwater development, also on block 15. First oil from the
Xikomba field was produced in late 2003, making it the first oil production on Esso-operated block 15. Production is
enabled through FPSO Xikomba, which was converted from the VLCC tanker Mosocean. In May 2011, ExxonMobil
announced that production at the Xikomba field will cease as reserves have depleted. About 100 million barrels of oil
have been recovered from the field.
FPSO Xikomba is planned to be upgraded and relocated to Eni's block 15/06, under an agreement with SBM
Offshore. The agreement was finalised in December 2011.
The refurbishment and upgrade contract for the Xikomba FPSO was awarded to Keppel Shipyard in April 2012. The
project is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2013.

Ofon Field, Oil and Gas Field, Nigeria
Ofon Field is an oil and natural gas field located in the Oil Mining Lease (OML) 102, about 65km offshore in
the south-eastern coast of Nigeria.
In early 2003 Esso started construction of the $3bn Kizomba B project, which is also expected to recover nearly one
billion barrels of oil, also at a target production rate of 250,000bpd. First oil for Kizomba B was reached in July 2005.
Kizomba B has developed the Kissanje and Dikanza discoveries in water depths of 3,300ft to 3,400ft. The project
includes a combination of a surface wellhead platform and subsea wells tied back to an FPSO vessel.
The design for Kizomba B essentially duplicates Kizomba A, therefore reducing costs and cycle time.
ExxonMobil earmarked $750m for the FPSO unit, which has a storage capacity of 2.2 million barrels of oil. The unit
measures 285m by 63m and stands 32m tall with a weight of 81,000t and accommodation for 100 personnel. By the
end of 2008 Kizomba B had 22 production wells.
Kizomba C details - Mondo, Saxi and Batuque oil fields
The third phase, Kizomba C, is designed to develop 600 million barrels of oil from the Mondo, Saxi and Batuque
fields in approximately 2,400ft of water.
Related project
Sanha / Bomboco Development, Angola
The Sanha development lies in Block 0, offshore Cabinda in West Africa, in 75m to 200m of water. The $1.4
billion condensate project is based on a number of fields.
Located 145km off the coast of Angola, the Mondo field started producing oil in January 2008, while the other two
fields, Saxi and Batuque, started production in August 2008.
Saxi and Batuque started production in August 2008, and between them are expected to contribute another 100,000
bpd.
The Kizomba C development features two FPSO vessels and 36 subsea wells, making it the largest subsea
development operated by ExxonMobil affiliates worldwide.
Nearly $1.5bn was spent on local goods and services for Kizomba C, including contracts for in-country fabrication,
logistics support, training and development of Angolan personnel.
According to ExxonMobil, suppliers played an instrumental role in the implementation of the project by providing
subsea manifolds, helidecks, laydown modules, umbilicals, anchor piles and specialised turret components, which
were successfully fabricated in Angola. The fabrication of the turret components was the first of its kind in Angola.
ExxonMobil's Kizomba satellite project
In 2008 ExxonMobil launched phase one of the Kizomba satellites project, which includes the development of two
satellite discoveries, Clochas and Mavacola. The two fields, which are estimated to contain 250 million barrels of oil,
are being developed as a tie back to Kizomba A and B production facilities.
Under the project, a total of 18 production wells will be drilled and tied-back to the existing Kizomba A and B FPSO
vessels. The first phase is expected to achieve a peak production rate of 100,000 barrels a day. The second phase of
the project will include development of neighbouring discoveries.
Contractors with roles in Angola's offshore oil field project
Esso Exploration Angola awarded the contract to tie back the Clochas and Mavacola fields to Saipem in July 2009.
Saipem was responsible for engineering, fabrication and installation of the subsea equipment, including umbilicals,
risers and pipelines.
"The partners also include Agip Angola (with a 20% share), BP Exploration
(with a 26.67% share) and Statoil (with a 13.33% share)."
In August 2009 Oceaneering International was awarded the contract for supplying 34km of electro-hydraulic steel
tube control umbilicals and 15km of hardwired communication link (HCL) umbilicals. The umbilicals will be used for
transmitting fluids, chemicals and power from the Clochas and Mavacola fields.
The contract for the design, procurement logistics and providing the support services for the Kizomba satellites
project was awarded to AMEC in September 2009. The company will execute the project in conjunction with Paragon
Angola, AMEC's joint venture with Prodiaman in Luanda.
To provide subsea production equipment for the project, Esso Exploration Angola selected GE Oil & Gas on 8
September 2009. According to the terms of the contract, GE was required to provide a range of topside and subsea
equipment including subsea trees, deepwater tree connectors, jumpers, manifolds, controls equipment, umbilical
termination assemblies, subsea distribution units and flying leads. Equipment is installed at the FPSOs of Kizomba A
and B fields. A large proportion of the equipment was produced and assembled in the Angola manufacturing and
service facility of GE.
In December 2009, GE awarded a subcontract to Neptune Deeptech for supplying five subsea tree frames. GE also
awarded SPT Group a subcontract to supply a subsea control system training simulator in March 2010.
Oliver Valves was awarded a £2m contract in June 2010 to supply subsea and topside valves for the satellite project.
Kizomba is in block 15, with some of the first trenches offered by the Angolan Government.

Proven and Probable Reserves370 million barrels
The Rosa field lies in block 17, 135km off the coast of Angola in water depths of 1,350m. It was discovered in
January 1998 and came onstream in June 2007. The field is operated by Total E&P Angola with 40% interest, with
Sonangol being the block 17 concessionaire.
Other partners are Esso Exploration Angola (block 17) Limited (20%), BP Exploration (Angola) Ltd. (16.67%),
Statoil Angola Block 17 AS (13.33%) and Norsk Hydro Dezassete (10%). Rosa, with proven and probable reserves
amounting 370 million barrels will maintain the FPSO's production plateau at 250,000 barrels per day (bpd) until early
in the next decade.
"The Rosa field lies in block 17, 135km off the coast of Angola in water
depths of 1,350m."
Block 17 is composed of four major zones: Girassol and Dalia, both in production; Pazflor is in the bidding process
before sanction and CLOV, a fourth major production area based on the Cravo, Lirio, Violeta and Orquidea
discoveries, whose development is currently being studied. Future production from these fields will come in addition
to the 500,000bpd that are currently pumped from Girassol and Dalia structures on the block 17.
ROSA DEVELOPMENT
Rosa is located 15km away from the Girassol Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel and uses this
facility as a development hub. This makes it the first deepwater field of this size to be tied back to such remote
installation and in such water depths. The development will comprise 25 wells, including 11 for water injection and 14
producers, which will be tied into four manifolds.
The subsea installation consists of 64km of insulated production flowlines (pipe in pipe) and of 40km of water
injection lines linking Rosa to the Girassol FPSO. An innovative riser tower docked nearby the FPSO takes the fluid
over 1,200m from the sea floor up to the surface.
The project was sanctioned in mid-2004 and the drilling programme commenced in December 2005. It is expected to
run until 2008. The work was carried out using the ultra deepwater drillship Saipem 10,000, however from July 2007,
this was assisted by the Pride Angola. Rosa will be produced from three sand channels, Rosa D, Rosa D west and
Rosa E.
SUBSEA PRODUCTION SYSTEM
The main work for the Subsea Production System (SPS) was awarded to FMC in a EPC (Engineering, Procurement
and Construction) contract. The scope of work included 13 production trees rated to 5,000psi and ten injection trees.
The christmas trees and wellhead guide bases were installed using the drilling rig as the wells were being drilled,
while the manifolds were installed by Saipem using its Saipem FDS DP monohull crane and pipelay vessel.
"Rosa will maintain the FPSO's production plateau at 250,000 barrels per day
(bpd)."
FMC's contract also included the flowlines and umbilical connection systems. There are two loops, each having two
production manifolds. One loop for reservoir D and the other is for D west.
There is also a multiplexed electro hydraulic production control system and an acoustic monitoring system. FMC
subcontracted Roxar for the multiphase flow meter on each well to monitor the flowrates.
In order to receive the Rosa production, 5,600t of structure and equipment was installed on the FPSO. During the
whole period, the treatment of the Girassol oil continued and only some scheduled production shutdowns were
required.
With Rosa onstream, all of the produced water from the Girassol, Jasmim and Rosa fields will be reinjected in the
reservoirs, thus resulting in produced water not being discharged to the sea. In addition, Total is reducing greenhouse
gas emissions by using an innovative process that inerts and recovers gaseous effluent from the FPSO tanks.

purpose-built FPSO located 30 miles offshore Malongo Terminal.
Combined production from Sanha and the nearby Bomboco field is expected to reach its average annual peak of
100,000b/d of oil, condensate and LPG by 2007.
Chevron Texaco's Angolan affiliate, Cabinda Gulf Oil Company (Cabgoc - 39.2%), operates the block on behalf of its
partners, including Sonangol (41%), Total (10%), and ENI (9.8%). Cabgoc and Sonasing (a joint venture between
Sonangol and SBM) are to share in the operations of the Sanha LPG FPSO. The Sanha will receive LPG for
processing into butane and propane from two adjacent platforms, Sanha PCP and F-GP, before offloading to shuttle
tankers.
DEVELOPMENT
Block 0 consists of three areas. Area A has 16 developed fields grouped into three complexes: Malongo, Kambala /
Livuite and Takula. Gas injection has been introduced at Malongo where NGLs are stripped out on the FGIP
compression platform on Malongo West.
Area B includes the Kokongo field based on two platforms, one of which, East Kokongo, is included in the Sanha
condensate development. This large processing platform forms a transportation hub for all Areas B and C fields.
Area C includes the North N'Dola and South Sanha facilities. North N'Dola's platform is a 16 well-slot facility in 80m
of water with a 20,000b/d processing capacity. Crude is exported to East Kokongo while excess gas piped to a flare
tower on the 16-slot 40,000b/d South Sanha installation, a 5,460t topsides sitting on a 1,500t jacket.
The Sanha condensate project is based on a platform complex in the central Sanha field consisting of a remote flare
jacket and process compression installation (PCP), a drilling production platform and a living quarters platform all
bridge-linked together. A cryogenic LPG plant on the PCP feeds into the Sanha LPG FPSO located 5km northeast.
Any dry residue is compressed and reinjected into the Sanha gas cap.
The new wellhead platform on Bomboco field came onstream in 2005, exporting to East Kokongo.

DiscoveryTombua field – 1997 Landana field - 2001
First ProductionSeptember 2009
Investment$3.8bn
The Tombua-Landana project covers the development of the Tombua and Landana fields, which are situated 80km
offshore Angola in West Africa. The project lies at a water depth of 1,200ft in the eastern section of block 14.
Chevron is the operator of the field with a 31% interest. Partners include Sonangol (20%), Eni (20%), Total (20%) and
Galp Energia (9%).
The field came onstream in September 2009 and was developed with an investment of $3.8bn.
Tombua-Landana discoveries
The Tombua field was discovered in 1997 by the Tombua-1 well. The Landana field was discovered in 2001 by the
14-6X / 6XST-1 well.
The Tombua-Landana reservoirs are of the Lower Miocene CN3 age and are made of high-quality sands deposited in
a series of structural and stratigraphic traps. The fields are estimated to contain recoverable resources of 350 million
barrels.
Development of the Tombua and Landana fields
"Chevron is the operator of the Tombua-Landana field with a 31% interest."
In June 2006, first oil was achieved from the Landana North-1 subsea well, which was connected to the Benguela
Belize-Lobito Tomboco (BBLT) compliant piled tower (CPT). The well was drilled to gather reservoir information
and plan the development of the fields.
A total of 11 reservoirs are to be developed as part of the project. Most of these reservoirs are at their bubble points,
therefore, pressure maintenance is essential to ensure maximum recovery.
The project received government approval in November 2006 and in 2007, pre-drilling activities at the fields began. A
total of 46 wells were drilled and tied-back to the Tombua Landana CPT. A tender-assisted drilling (TAD) rig is
moored near the production platform to carry out drilling operations.
The project was designed to ensure zero gas flaring and zero discharge of produced water. The produced natural gas is
processed and stored in an existing reservoir on block O until the Angola Liquefied Natural Gas project being built in
Soyo is ready. The produced water is recycled and reinjected into the reservoirs.
Tombua Landana platform
The Tombua-Landana platform weighs 76,000t and includes an integrated deck with production facilities. The
platform is 1,554ft high and supported by a 56,400t four-legged CPT. The CPT is one of the world's biggest man-
made structures and is fixed onto the seafloor by 12 foundation piles.
An accommodation facility for 120 people is also part of the platform. The platform has 38 well slots and has a
capacity of 130,000bpd of oil and 210MMcf per day of gas. It has a water-injection capacity of 310,000bpd.
Subsea system and pipeline
The subsea system for the Tombua-Landana fields comprises two subsea manifolds. One manifold is a subsea
collection centre for production and the second is for water injection.
"KBR provided the front end engineering services."
Two export pipelines were installed to export of gas and oil from the fields.
The gas export pipeline is 31km long and 14in in diameter. It is connected to the BBLT gas export pipeline through a
subsea piggable wye in 570ft of water.
The oil export pipeline is 26km long and has a diameter of 18in. It is connected to the BBLT oil export pipeline
through a subsea piggable wye in 380ft of water.
Contracts for the Tombua-Landana fields
KBR provided the front end engineering services for the Tombua-Landana project. The front end engineering design
and project management services for the CPT were provided by Mustang Engineering.
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) was awarded a $1.27bn contract for building the platform.
DSME subcontracted Gulf Marine Fabricators for fabrication of the top and bottom sections of the CPT.
Heerema Fabrication Group was responsible for the fabrication of the base structure and foundation piles of the CPT.
The foundation piles are the longest ever to be installed in the world, measuring 624ft.
The accommodation facility of the platform was manufactured by Delta Engineering.
Sonamet was responsible for the manufacture and supply of the platform's drilling template.
"A total of 11 reservoirs are to be developed as part of the Tombua-Landana
project."
InterMoor was awarded the contract for providing a mobile offshore drilling unit to pre-drill the platform wells. The
company also supplied eight preset mooring anchors for the TAD rig and a 60ft suction follower.
Seadrill was contracted to supply the TAD rig in August 2006. Gusto MSC supplied telescopic gangways for the CPT.
Fairstar Heavy Transport transported the topside modules of the platform. Fairstar used its heavy transport ship Fjord
to transport the modules from South Korea to Angola.
In September 2006, Subsea 7 was contracted for the supply and installation of tie-back facilities including manifolds,
flowlines, jumpers and umbilicals.
Vetco Gray supplied subsea equipment for the project, which included a tree system, manifolds, and well jumpers and
production control systems.
Acergy West Africa installed the oil and gas export pipeline.
The Tombua-Landana compliant piled tower is one of the largest offshore structures built.

Water Depths 4,850 feet (1,480m)
Discovery1999
ExxonMobil's Xikomba deepwater development in Angola, West Africa, is located in the north-west corner of Block
15, approximately 230 miles (370km) north-west of Luanda in water depths of up to 4,850ft (1,480m). The field was
discovered in 1999. Recoverable reserves have been put at around 100 million barrels of oil equivalent.
Xikomba's development is divided into two parts - Xikomba A and B. First oil from Xikomba A was achieved in
2004, with a production plateau of around 80,000 barrels a day. First oil from Xikomba B was achieved in 2005.
In addition to Esso (operator, 40%), other participants in Block 15 are BP Exploration (Angola) (26.67%), Agip
Angola Exploration (20%) and Statoil Angola (13.33%). Sonangol is the concessionaire.
Xikomba is a light, low-sulphur crude. Crude characteristics are:
API: 34.7°
SG: 0.8514
Sulphur: 0.39mass%
Pour point: 3°C
TAN: 0.16mg KOH/g
Nickel: 12.0wppm
Vanadium: 5.0wppm
Viscosity (50°C): 4.71cSt
In May 2011, ExxonMobil announced that production at the field will cease, as the reserves have depleted. A peak
production of 90,000 barrels a day has been achieved at the field. Exxon is currently in the process of
decommissioning the field.
Construction and development of the West African oil field
"ExxonMobil's Xikomba deepwater development in Angola, West Africa, is
located in the north-west corner of Block 15."
Xikomba has been developed by subsea wells tied back to a combined floating production and storage ship. FPSO
Xikomba has deadweight of 257,000dwt and a storage capacity of 1,700bbl. The FPSO is owned by Sonasing, a joint
venture between SBM and Sonangol. It is based on the conversion of the former VLCC tanker Mosocean.
The oil is stored in twelve crude oil tanks, although the vessel also has two slop tanks for the cleaned produced water,
as well as three water ballast tanks. Crude is transferred every three to four days to a shuttle tanker approaching the
FPSO from the stern, where the two vessels are connected by floating hose.
FPSO Xikomba's accommodation facilities can house 85 people in one and two bed cabins. The facilities also contain
the central control and radio rooms.
With the end of operations at the field, FPSO Xikomba is planned to be upgraded and relocated to Eni's block 15/06.
Nine-well subsea development at Angola's Xikomba field
Xikomba is a nine-well subsea development - four production wells, four water injection wells and a gas injection
well. The subsea facilities are connected to the surface by two 10in production risers. There are also two 8in water
injection risers, an 8in gas injection riser and three umbilicals.
These enter the FPSO at the swivel stack in the bow. The swivel stack consists of a 6in gas injection, HP utility,
electric, LP utility, 6in pigging and 10in water injection swivels. There are also two 12-production lines and two 12in
test lines.
In total, the processing facilities have a capacity of 20 million ft³/d, a water injection capacity of 90bbl/d and a gas
injection capacity of 95 million ft³/d.
Topside processing modules linked to ExxonMobil's deepwater oil development
The topsides consist of 16 main modules varying in weight from 170t to 1,100t, all of which were fabricated in the
UAE. These include the HP separator (module 1) and the low pressure and electrostatic treater (module 2).
"In May 2011, ExxonMobil announced that production at the field will cease,
as the reserves have depleted."
Module 4 is the gas injection / gas lift facilities and the gas is dehydrated in module 6. The water is treated in module
9 and then pumped out at high pressure by two dual fuel turbine driven water pumps on module 10, before being
routed through the swivel path to the water injection wells.
Module 11 has the heating cooling and electricity services. The heating uses steam from the vessel's boilers. Cooling
is by seawater.
Other services are the chemical storage (module 14), flare scrubbers (module 16) and methanol storage and pumping
equipment (module 19). Module 4 contains the test separator.
Xikomba FPSO is a conversion of the former VLCC tanker Mosocean.
Xikomba FPSO has been developed by subsea wells.
Subsea facilities are connected to the surface by two 10in production risers.
FPSO Xikomba has a deadweight of 257,000dwt and a storage capacity of 1,700bbl.
