History of the Anemometer

• In 1450, Leon Battista Alberti developed the first anemometer

• Leonardo DaVinci helped contribute to the design of anemometer– His design was supposed to make it easier to

measure wind force.• Anemometer comes from the Greek word

“anemos”, which means wind.

Cup Anemometer

This anemometer is very simple. It only has four hemispherical cups that are on four different arms. The turning of the cups are proportionally the same to the wind speed. To find the wind speed, count the number of turns of the cups over a period of time. This anemometer was designed by Thomas Romney Robinson. (Used in Twister and The Wizard Of Oz.)

Windmill Anemometer

The windmill anemometer looks like and actual windmill, hence the name. The panels are vertical so it can follow the wind as it picks up speed or goes slowly.

Laser Doppler Anemometer

The Laser Doppler Anemometer is a very high-tech anemometer, so it is usually more accurate. A beam of light is shot from the laser inside the anemometer. Although the beam is divided and only one goes out and the air particles caught in the beam are reflected back into the anemometer where it’s measured.

What Is It Used For And How Does It Work?

• The anemometer is used to measure wind speed.

• It all depends on what kind of anemometer you use. The most common one is the cup anemometer and with that the cups catch the wind and depending on how fast the axel is spinning it helps measure the wind speed.

What Does It Look Like?

Cup Anemometer- There is a main rod with four arms coming off of it and each of the arms have a cup that catches the wind to measure the wind speed.

Windmill Anemometer- Well, it looks a rocket with a windmill at the end and the windmill part spins with the wind to measure the wind speed.

Laser Doppler Anemometer- Please enjoy the picture on the next slide because it is too hard to explain so you can just look at it with your own eyes.
