Andrzej Kuhn was born inPoland in 1929 and experiencedan extremely turbulent child-hood. After the Soviet invasionin 1940 Kuhn and his sister wereseparated from their parentsand spent the following years in Kazakhstan and refugee campsacross the Middle East.

In 1947 Kuhn arrived in Englandand, after six years working as alabourer, won a scholarship toChelsea School of Art. He dis-covered his own artistic voicevery quickly and, against the fashion for representation, beganto express his ideas in much thesame way as he does to this day.Flat, mythical scenes, in a richpalette of colours and subtle textures, are always peopled by

strange and wonderful charac-ters; weary travellers, angels,benevolent moons, lions, lovers,fishermen and musicians. ForKuhn, these are real people, realevents, their images arriving, fullyformed, in his imagination pulledfrom the reservoir of human experience.
