Andrew Jackson:Good, Evil & The
Presidency
Should Andrew Jackson be on the Twentydollar Bill?Historians continue to debate the merits of the decisions and actions taken by
President Andrew Jackson during his two terms in office. Living between the
Revolutionary War and the Civil War, Jackson played a central role in virtually all of
the controversial issues of his time Indian removal, economic reform, states' rights,
and slavery.
Objective: Students will work in groups to create an argument for or against
celebrating the legacy of Andrew Jackson through research, writing and a
presentation to be used in a classroom debate.
Debate: The class will be divided into
2 teams, one team will be in support of
celebrating the legacy of Andrew Jackson and
the other will be against celebrating his legacy.
Each team will use the documentary film
Andrew Jackson: Good, Evil & The
Presidency (to be viewed during class), the
PBS website, textbooks and other credible
sources to help support and defend their
position in a debate.
Group Work: Students will work together using Google Drive & Google Docs via
the Google Drive app on their iPads to collaborate on their research, writing and
presentations. As a group, students must create the following:
1. Group EssayEach group must create a Google
“Document” shared with all members of the
team and Mr. Krause which explains the
groups’ stance in the debate. Each team
member is responsible for choosing and
writing 1 paragraph about Jackson’s life
which will contribute to the total group essay. Each paragraph must cover a
different aspect of Jackson’s life.
All team members will collaborate
on the introductory & concluding
paragraphs (including the thesis
statement/argument). As a guide,
each paragraph is based on a chapter of
the documentary and the corresponding
PBS website.
The final document must contain the
following paragraphs based on the number of students in a group. For
example if you have 5 students in your group the final written essay must include 7

writing all suggested paragraphs if they believe it will further support their argument.
