RESUME Andrew Christie is the founding Chair of Intellectual Property in the University of Melbourne Law School. He has Bachelors degrees in Science and in Laws from the University of Melbourne, an LLM with distinction from the University of London, and a prize-winning PhD from the University of Cambridge. He is an academic and professional lawyer who specialises in intellectual property law, and has particular expertise in the application of copyright, patent and trade mark law to the digital environment.

Admitted to legal practice in Australia and the United Kingdom, Prof. Christie worked for many years in the intellectual property departments of law firms in Melbourne and London. He has also worked as a Research Associate with the corporate strategy consultants Boston Consulting Group, and as a Consultant (Special Counsel) to a specialist Australian firm of intellectual property lawyers, patent and trade marks attorneys. He is a trained arbitrator and mediator, and is an active panelist of leading ADR centres in Geneva, Sydney, Hong Kong, Paris and Shenzen.

Prof. Christie has received national and international recognition for his excellence in teaching. He has held visiting teaching appointments in intellectual property law at a number of overseas universities, including the University of Cambridge, Duke University, the University of Toronto, and the National University of Singapore.

Prof. Christie is an internationally renowned scholar and researcher of intellectual property law. His academic career commenced in 1989, when he was elected the inaugural Herchel Smith Research Fellow in the Law of Intellectual Property at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He was one of two Australians, selected from across all academic, professional and performing arts disciplines, to be appointed a Fulbright Senior Scholar for the academic year 2000/01, a position he held at Duke University School of Law. From 2002-2008, Prof. Christie was the founding Director of the Intellectual Property Research Institute of Australia (IPRIA), a national centre for multi-disciplinary research in the law, economics and management of intellectual property, based at the University of Melbourne. He has authored more than 100 publications, and delivered by invitation more than 100 public addresses in 20 countries, across all areas of intellectual property law. His excellence in research is demonstrated by the fact he has been the recipient of competitive, peer-reviewed, research grants totalling $2 million, and instrumental in winning research funding from other sources in excess of $11 million.

In July 2005 Prof. Christie was identified by the leading international magazine Managing Intellectual Property as one of the world’s 50 most influential people in intellectual property.
