We have put together a shorter chatter for you but it does contain some activities that are similar to the ones that we will be doing in school this week. Discussion at home this week: This week we are going to be continuing our focus on Peace by thinking about Peace and Justice because as Martin Luther King Jr Said: "True Peace is not the absence of tension... it is the presence of justice." For this weeks reflection we are going to think about the words of educational activist Laleña Garcia who is a member of the Black Lives Matter movement. “The Civil Rights Movement, with people we know about, like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks, worked to change laws that were unfair. The Black Lives Matter Movement is made up of people who want to make sure that everyone is treated fairly, because, even though many of those laws were changed many years ago, some people are still not being treated fairly.” “There are lots of different kinds of people and one way that we’re different is the color of our skin. It’s important to make sure that all people are treated fairly. This is why we, and lots of other people all over the country and the world, are part of the Black Lives Matter Movement.” Lets all think about how we can challenge racism and discrimination wherever we find it. In the post later this week, you should receive a secondary school transition booklet that we have put together, full of worksheets to gradually work through over the coming weeks. This matches what we are doing in school. Each week on this chatter, we will let you know which page of the booklet to fill in next. It is not designed to be done all at once. You may have lots of questions about your new school and it’s important to chat to someone at home about what’s on your mind.

Learning for Monday 15th June

09:00-09:30 PE with Joe Wicks https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ 9:30-10:30 Literacy This week, we are continuing with ‘The Red Tree’. You can re-read the words and images from the book on the previous pages.

Look again at this image. It is a bit like a board game and the character is holding the dice. Design your own board game in a similar style. Perhaps it could be like snakes and ladders or something more like Ludo or Monopoly. Try to incorporate the girl from The Red Tree in the board game using your illustrations. The best way to start is to divide your page up into small squares – perhaps a 6x5 grid giving you 30 squares. Choose a start and end point. Then get designing! Where will the monster be lurking on your board game? Where will the girl be? If you land on certain squares, what will it say? Examples: -Go back 5 -Miss a turn

-Roll the dice again Then ask someone in your house to play your game with you.

1:00 Art – Look again at this picture from The Red Tree – we are going to create a collage based on this picture below. -Firstly, decide on a “strange little world” that a character could travel through, just like the girl in this picture. -Then using paints or colouring pencil or anything else arty that you have at home, create different patterns of colour on a piece of paper, just like the example to the right.

-With your chosen strange little world in your head, start drawing on top of your colour patterned page using a pen – draw buildings and other objects. --Make sure these are different sizes so that they can be layered later. Cut them out like this below.

Then decide how to layer your images on top of the other to create your scene like the picture below.

writing a diary entry based on one of the images in The Red Tree. I am going to use this image of the seedling growing as an example, but you can use any one of the images from the book. First of all, create a mindmap of things that the girl might be thinking and wondering when she is in your chosen picture. For example:

There are two ways of using commas in the clip. 1 Commas for clauses e.g. As I entered the room, I caught a glimpse of something red on the floor. 2 Commas for parenthesis e.g. The seedling, which was tiny and delicate, swayed gently as I walked towards it.

Using your chosen picture as your stimulus, practise writing both types of comma sentences. Try to get four examples for each one. We can then use these sentences when you write your diary next week. Remember to write these sentences using the pronoun I –this will ensure that the sentences will work in a diary format.

1:00 Planting. This week, you should have received a sunflower seed in the post, delivered to your home. It should be in the pack along with your secondary transition booklet. Just like the children in school, we would like you to plant the seed, nurture it and watch it grow, as a symbol of hope and renewal during this time. Other tasks:

- Record the instructions for planting the seed in your exercise book. - Keep a record of its growth each day. - Make an estimate for how tall you think it will have grown by the end of the week and the end of the month.

Transition Activity: You should have received a transition booklet in the post. Design the front cover of the booklet – use the blank page on the front of the booklet for this. Ensure it has the title: Secondary Transition and your name. Decorate as brightly as you like and include lots of pictures and patterns. Complete page 1 of the booklet. Chat about your thoughts about secondary school with your family. It’s going to be an exciting change to go to a new school!

As an extra challenge, add an extra illustration to your diary page – this could be a picture that the character has drawn that matches what is written in the diary.
