Pastor’s Ponderings I am reading an interesting book

called Searching for Sunday by

Rachel Held Evans. As the

church has changed and is

continuing to change, we find ourselves

wondering what the coming generations will

expect from us. Searching for Sunday is written

by a millennial who, like millions of her peers,

didn’t want to go to church anymore. What she

perceived as a church full of hypocrisy, politics,

gargantuan building budgets, and scandals

seemed so far removed from Jesus. Yet, despite

her cynicism and misgivings, something kept

drawing her back to Church. And so she set out

on a journey to understand Church and to find

her place in it. Her search process reveals the

heart of a generation that many of us seek to

understand. If you have the time, read this

book. I'd love to know your thoughts.

We are well into the heat of our south

Louisiana summer and while we want to shut

ourselves in, our work continues. The next big

thing on our calendar is the Back to School

party on July 29 from 10 A.M.-1 P.M. Please

mark your calendars. Bring your children,

grandchildren and neighbors. We'll grill

hotdogs and hamburgers and we'll have the

water slides that are so loved by our children.

Then, on August 5, the Presbyterian Women

will be hosting a conference for the women of

southwest Louisiana at St. Andrew. This event

usually involves a luncheon, workshops and

worship with communion. We'll be providing

more details as they become available.

Anita, our church secretary will be having

surgery and will be out of the office most of

July. I will be in and out and will check emails

and the phone, but if there is something that

needs immediate attention, please call my cell

794-6197.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL CELEBRATION

Our annual Back-to-School

Party will be Saturday, July

29, from 10 AM-1 PM. We'll have water

slides for the young ones, grilled burgers,

and hotdogs. A tent will be set up for shade,

and of course our older folks will have the

A/C in the fellowship hall! Come & bring

your families and

friends.

enjamin LaBuff, our pianist for the past

few months, will be leaving for the

University of Southern California’s

(USC) Thornton School of Music in the

early part of August. His last day with St.

Andrew will be July 30th.

While living in the residential dorm on the

USC campus, Benjamin will be 2 miles from

downtown Los Angeles. A recipient of

numerous musical awards in Louisiana, both at

the district and state level, his degree emphasis

at USC will be on Popular Music.

Outstanding in both music and football

while at Kinder High School, Benjamin has

chosen a musical path for his college career.

All of us at St. Andrew wish him the best,

and hope that he will return to see us from time

to time. Our keyboards will always be open to

his visiting and playing. Thank you, Benjamin!!

And, thanks to his parents, Tee and Terry, for

allowing the time he spent with us.

1001 New Worshiping Communities

(Excerpts from https://www.presbyterianmission.org/story/okra-abbey-cultivating-community-new-orleans-

pigeon-town-neighborhood/ and https://www.presbyterianmission.org/ministries/1001-2/)

What is this initiative all about?

1001 new worshiping communities is a movement happening in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Across

the PC (USA), God is raising up leaders in churches and presbyteries who are creating new worshiping

communities. They are taking on new and varied forms of church for our changing culture. Primarily they are

seeking to make and form new disciples of Jesus Christ, to change and transform the world.

In June 2012, the 220th General Assembly declared a commitment to a church wide movement that

results in the creation of 1,001 worshiping communities over the next 10 years. At a grassroots level, hundreds

of diverse new worshiping communities have already formed across the nation. The Presbyterian Mission

Agency is coming alongside to fan the flames of this movement, to inspire and equip the wider church to

participate in the creation of 1,001 new worshiping communities in the next 10 years.

Why is Presbytery doing this? Why is it necessary?

New worshiping communities will help the PC (USA) make the shift from an inward-focused, membership-

maintenance model of church to a more outward, creative, and disciple-making expression of church.

One New Worshipping Community is Okra Abbey, located in the Pigeon Town neighborhood of New Orleans.

Layne and Crawford Brubaker, together with a ministry colleague, Vincent Grossi, are more than just blooming

where they’re planted—they’re cultivating community by growing not only vegetables, but also by nurturing

faith and trust among their diverse neighbors.

We started in September by offering one meal on Wednesdays at noon called “Grace & Greens,” said Crawford

Brubaker. “Sometimes up to 20 people come from a 6-block radius from around the garden.”

The Okra Abbey sees itself as an “urban abbey,” unlike more conventional abbeys that are set far apart from the

people.

“But still in abbeys, you picture the monks doing work all day, and their work is part of their worship,”

Crawford Brubaker said. “So when people ask us, ‘When do you guys have worship,’ we say every day—when

we’re moving the dirt in wheelbarrows and when we’re planting the seeds and picking the weeds, this is all

worship, as we start our day with prayer and we end our day with prayer.”

Page 4: And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you ...€¦ · Presbyterian Women (PW) is an independent organization within the Presbyterian Church ... strong commitment to

“We chose to call it Okra Abbey because okra is a beloved vegetable in New Orleans,” he continued. “It serves

as the base of gumbo and thus in the title of our worshiping community is a nod to the particularities of our

context. If we were in Nebraska, we’d probably be ‘Corn Cloister.’”
